GEORGETOWN — It’s a case of animal cruelty that’s gaining national attention and it happened in Georgetown CountyAnimal shelter workers share one dog’s incredible tale of survival.

Beaten, bound, and left to die in the International Paper Canal.

However, thanks to some quick thinking residents who called for help, rescuers saved Dara the dog.

“It breaks my heart,” said Wendy Goude, St. Frances Animal Shelter.  “I mean it’s hard to believe that somebody or anything could help hurt and animal like this.  It’s cruel.”

Goude said she’s seen some bad cases of animal abuse, but nothing quite like this.

“This is definitely the worst case,” she said.  “We’ve seen several cases of puppies and kittens in grocery bags, we’ve seen animals that have been burned but this being bound with duct tape and thrown into a river after it’s like two attempts on its life.

Despite what people did to her Dara isn’t scared and has a sweet disposition.

However, as workers at the shelter will tell you, she’s also a fighter.

“Her name is Dara.  We named her after the Olympics swimmer because she’s a great swimmer apparently and is a survivor,” said Goude.

If cats have nine lives, Goude thinks Dara the dog has a couple as well.

“Apparently she has at least two,” she said.  “And her next one is going to be a lot better than what she had before.”

Once Dara’s better, she’ll go up for adoption.

There is a reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
