MOON LAKE, Fla. – As a dog owner and adopter, Lori King couldn’t fathom the idea that someone could kill innocent puppies.
And yet that’s what happened to four tiny pit bulls, just a few weeks old.
King called thePasco County sheriff’s office after finding out that the dogs had been buried in a shallow grave along Catalona Avenue in Moon Lake Estates. Her boyfriend’s son, Martin Smith, owned the dogs. Deputies said his friend,David Thompson, carried out the killings.
Investigators accused Thompson, 21, of beating the puppies with a shovel until they were dead.
Thompson was charged with animal cruelty and taken to the Land O’ Lakes jail. Deputies said Smith helped bury the dogs, and admitted they were killed because he couldn’t afford to keep them anymore. “
“I asked them to dig them up and make sure they weren’t still alive, I was so upset,” said King. “I would have done anything. It did not have to happen. It’s just terrible,” she said.
Animals are a way of life for many residents in Moon Lake. Many wondered why the owner didn’t contact somebody or some group for help.
“Plenty of shelters around here,” said William Davidson, who owns multiple dogs and cats. “They even got the dog pound running around here once a day and picking up little stray dogs,” Davidson said.
“I think it’s disgusting,” said Robyn Romero, whose family owns several animals. “How could you do that to an innocent little breathing creature? I just can’t imagine,” she said.
Deputies didn’t charge Smith, even though he admitted to burying the dead dogs in the dirt. The state attorney’s office will review the case and decide if additional charges should be filed.
Thompson was held on $5,000 bond. “Whoppee fxxxxxg do, stop wasting time & money with all this bail & bond bullshit, just throw their sick backsides into jail; until we come up with another way of confining these animal killers, so that they too…suffer!!!”

On Thursday, a grievously wounded dog was discovered alongside a roadway in Monee, Ill., and on Friday night, she gave birth to five puppies.

The dog, named ”Petunia,” is now the responsibility of the rescue organization, It’s a Pittie Rescue, and she is receiving veterinary treatment from the Animal Wellness Center, whose staff stayed with her through the night to ensure that her delivery went smoothly.

Since Petunia’s story was first published, well wishes have been pouring in from across the nation.
Petunia has extensive burns across much of her body. Though no one is certain what happened to her, it appears that she was intentionally set on fire.
Fortunately, she was discovered and rescued, literally in the nick of time.

The male pit bullpuppy found in Yonkers was unable to recover from excessive wounds and blood loss, and had to be euthanized.
Local veterinarians were unable to save a 9-month-old pit bull puppy that sufferedmassive wounds and blood loss after likely being used as a ‘bait dog’ to train other dogs to fight.
The SPCA of Westchester’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Division was contacted by the Yonkers Animal Shelterwho got a call about a severely injured dog found on a walkway between Somerville Road and Edwards Place in Yonkers. The puppy was taken a local animal hospital.
‘At the time, his breathing was extremely laboured ’ said Ernest Lungaro, director of the SPCA’s HLE Division. ‘The veterinarian who examined him reported that the pit bull had severe multiple bite wounds and abrasions about his face, muzzle and head. He was extremely emaciated and neglected and was mostly likely used as a bait dog in a fighting ring.
The veterinarian also noted the animal had old scars from previous attacks.’
The puppy was put to sleep Thursday, since veterinarians determined he was unable to recover from such severe injuries.
Puppies, weak or older dogs and females who can’t breed are often used as ‘bait dogs’ and are usually tied up and/or have their teeth removed so they are rendered defenceless-according to the Briarcliff based SPCA of Westchester, a no-kill non-profit animal shelter, hospital and animal cruelty law enforcement organization.
‘Although dog fighting is acrime in New York State, we are constantly on the lookout for clandestine groups who fight the animals inWestchester County,’ said Lungaro.
The SPCA’s HLE Division is asking that anyone with information on this puppy or information on dog fighting in their area to make a confidential call to the number below.

So many people may not like them, but do they really have to set a dog on fire to prove their dislike?

It’s absolutely sickening; especially awful when the Pitbull is a pregnant female!
Not only was the dog set on fire, but afterward was hit by a car.
This maddening sense of abuse happened right in the south Chicago suburbs on Tuesday. That was when “It’s a Pittie” (IAP) Pitbull Rescue inMonee, Illinoiswere called in. Before IAP was contacted, another animal shelter had her. She required immediate medical assistance so IAP had to wait 24 hours for the dog’s release.
The poor mother-to-be had burns over 25% of her body. Due to the car accident, Petunia, as the dog is being referred to, also has internal injuries.

Why someone would have the audacity to do this in the first place is awful, but considering that the female dog’s milk has come in, it is extremely horrifying because she is likely to give birth in just about a week.
The person that carried forth the abuse will most likely never be discovered. This is very unfortunate indeed! No animal or human deserves treatment like Petunia received.
Culprits like whoever committed the abuse on Petunia make sure that they remain free from indictment. They do so by removing any identification that the dog may wear and fail to have them microchipped because to the abuser, the dog is ‘dispensable!’
No mother is ever dispensable but Petunia may be too weak to care for her coming litter which is yet another concern. She is receiving hydro-therapy treatments but needs constant care so that her burnt flesh does not get infected as that could prove life threatening.
So what if you do not likePitbulls? Is that any reason whatsoever for someone to hurt them to this degree?
Shelters and rescues are filled with them. Perhaps the shelters and rescues should take in the individuals that abuse the dogs and cause them such utter pain; locking them away from harming yet another defenceless animal. It is because of those individuals that Pitbulls act the way that they do. “Yes, totally agree with locking the MF’s up & causing them intense pain!”
We need better laws. Not just laws that stipulate that Pitbulls are not allowed to live in certain areas, but laws that protect Pitbulls and other animals that are on the “hit list” from being treated with such utter disdain. Maybe if we began with the root cause, the dogs themselves would not have such a pathetic reputation and be treated to mortifyingly.
It really and truly is hard to believe that this poor dog has to go through all of this.
Dog lovers everywhere apologize for those that should know better but obviously do not!

Two witnesses told a Columbia/Boone County Animal Control agent that William D.

Smith beat the dog with a wooden 2-by-2 board March 8 at his home in Colonial Village Trailer Court, 2904 Range Line St., No. 76. The dog was found comatose in a puddle of blood and lung fluidswhen Animal Control officials arrived, according to court documents.
“The dog was gurgling and moaning in pain,” Molly Aust, Animal Control supervisor, wrote in the document.
Animal Control officials today could not confirm the dog’s age or who owned the dog, nor could they verify a motive for the incident. Smithdoes not have a previous history with Animal Control.
The dog’s head was distorted from swelling and abrasions that appeared to be a result of the beating, according to court documents.
“A flower pot with a considerable amount of blood was also present,” Aust wrote.
The board and flower pot were collected as evidence, and the dog was removed from the scene and euthanized.
An autopsy revealed injuries to the dog’s head, face, left forelimb and right hind limb. Other injuries included puncture wounds, a crushed frontal bone with a frontal lobe contusion and haemorrhaging.
A warrant for Smith’s arrest was issued Friday on suspicion of felony animal abuse, and Columbia police arrested him later that day.
The charge specifically alleges “torture and/or mutilation while animal was alive.” Smithremained in theBoone County Jail today with a $25,000 cash-only bond.
Panda Paws Rescue founder Amanda Giese obtained as much information as she could and then contacted authorities in Fontana, California who came to the aid of the puppies and her mother.
A 24-year-old woman posted an ad offering for sale 3-day-old pit bull puppies.
When Panda Paws found out about it they were horrified. Although located in a different state, the rescue didn’t hesitate to help. Knowing the puppies lives were at risk Giese worked to obtain proof of what was happening. As soon as she had confirmation that the ad was real, she contacted the Fontana Police Department for help.
Officer Jamie Simmons with the Fontana Police Department went into immediate action. Officer Simmons removed six puppies and their mother from the woman’s custody by Tuesday night. Officer Simmons placed the puppies and mother in medical care with a local veterinary clinic.
A seventh puppy was sold on Monday, and its location is unknown.
The puppies and mother are currently in foster care once they are able to be safely transported they will be taken to Panda Paws Rescue in Vancouver, Washington. Wings of Rescue will be helping to fly the dogs to Washington. The puppies will be available for adoption once they are over 8 weeks old, vaccinated, microchipped and altered.
The woman who was selling the puppies is facing numerous charges. The investigation is ongoing and more details about the rescue are not yet released.
“WTF…why?? Why would you do this to a dog, unless for the reason given below; but if that’s the case why wasn’t the dog covered in bite marks. However she ended up there, someone put her there & somebody knows who did it…please…ease your conscience & tell the police or ring the shelter if you know anything!! Next time it might just be a dog covered in bite marks, ultimately dead! The person who did this is a psychopath…if he can do that to a dog, what else will he turn his hand to?”
The female white pit bull terrier now named Tiffany was found Saturday with duct tape completely covering her eyes. Her caretakers think that she had been hog tied and used as a bait dog.

Currently in the San Bernardino Shelter, Tiffany needs to be rescued immediately or she will be euthanized.
Bait dogs are the most heartbreaking victims of dog fighting. Any dog could be unlucky enough to be rendered helpless by being tied up and then thrown into a fighting ring with a dog trained to kill.

“WTF…they didn’t have a reasonable answer for the deaths! There is no answer in the world to excuse not feeding dogs to the point they starve to death. This pair need to do some jail time, as well as being banned from any pets for life. DIBOLL, TX (KTRE) -Not knowing that there was a warrant out for his arrest, the second suspect in an animal cruelty case that resulted in the deaths of three dogs and a pet rat walked into the Diboll Police Department Wednesday afternoon and was immediately taken into custody.
Greghollon Oliver, 27, of Huntington, was arrested and charged with state-jail felony animal cruelty charge. As of 4:55 p.m. Wednesday, Oliver still hadn’t been booked into the Angelina County Jail.

The first suspect in the case, Samantha Lovejoy, 20, of Huntington, was arrested on Jan. 31 and also charged with state-jail felony animal cruelty. She posted a bond of $3,500 and was released on Feb. 1.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained Tuesday morning, Donna Brown, the Diboll animal control officer, and a Diboll Police officer responded to a trailer located in the 900 block of Denman in reference to an animal cruelty call. The complainant told Brown that a black pit bull mix dog had knocked out a window screen and was hanging outside the trailer.

When she approached the trailer, Brown “could smell the odor of death and decay coming from the residence,” according Sgt. Norman Williams of the Diboll Police Department. Cries of other animals could be heard coming from the home.
Brown entered the trailer and found a dead pet rat in its tank with no food or water. In addition, she found two dead black pit mix dogs in a bedroom. According to the affidavit, it looked like the dogs had starved to death. Diboll PD detectives said the dogs had been dead for weeks.
Another dog, a red pit bull mix, was lying on one of the dogs, and at first, Brown thought it was dead, too. When she checked its vital signs, she found that it was still alive. Animal control authorities wound up euthanizing the red pit bull because it was severely under weight and on the verge of dying.
“There was another one that had to be euthanized; they don’t know how it was still alive,” Williams said.
While searching the rest of the trailer, Brown found the dog that was the cause of the original call. She also found a red Doxie mix and two kittens.
“The black pit mix and the red Doxie mix both appeared to have a good weight and to be in fair health,” the affidavit stated. “The kittens both appeared to be in the beginning stages of starvation.”
Williams said interviews with neighbors helped authorities track downLovejoy. Further investigation revealed that Oliver also resides at Lovejoy’s Diboll home. Oliver, who is listed as a defendant in the arrest affidavit, has prior arrests in Angelina County.
“They didn’t have a good answer for it – not a reasonable answer for it, anyway,” Williams said.
“A precious baby, yet another pit bull puppy used & abused, tragically at the hands of humans…who else!! Some may well say, well this was just another dog, found abused, who found a home. But remember all dogs rescued are special; their hearts all heal in their own unique ways. If I had been abused as this pup had, I wouldn’t be so quick to forgive…but that’s the difference between us & dogs or any animal…show them love & they will readily love back unconditionally. Yes some dogs do take longer than others to heal, but rarely are there any, not willing to love; putting their hardships, behind them & always being there for you. Some dogs are just special, they have an amazing ability to make the shittiest day, be forgotten with one sweet lick…they make you laugh when you only feel like crying. This really touched my heart, & pricked my eyes with tears; this made me feel so grateful to have my 3 dogs, whom without, my life would be empty! I think anyone who has never loved a dog is missing; out on one of Gods sweetest, kindest most loyal of creatures…any ones best friend, a dog!”

Molly the pit bull experienced the very worst and the very best of humankind during her very short life. Molly was brutalized as a bait dog and then left tied to a pole in the basement of an abandoned Baltimore house at six months old.
She was found by a workman, rescued, then adopted into a loving home.
Molly flourished in her new home and became attached to her dog siblings and her humans. For three months she knew happiness, comfort, companionship and love. Then a sudden and catastrophic health event ended her life.

“WTF…WHY ARE ANIMAL ABUSERS BEING LET OFF SO LIGHTLY?? This man pleaded no contest to drug and multiple animal cruelty charges while his wife continues to face trial for chaining their malnourished pit bulls in their own filth…Deputies saw a very skinny brown pit bill dog tied to a large chain barking at me,” one deputy wrote in his report. Then observed a very skinny black pit bull dog lying on its side, and it appeared to be dead…I observed the black dog lift its head and look at me though due to the dog being so skinny from lack of food, the dog could not stand up.”
Bothdogs were “malnourished to the point of starvation”, according to an arrest report, with access to “old nasty water” and no food. Both dogs were tied to heavy chains and were surrounded by flies.
YET a Judge gave him probation…where is the justice??”
John Oswald, 30, pleaded no contest on Tuesday to two counts causing death, pain or suffering to animals and one count unlawful confinement or abandonment of animals. His arrest came after Escambia County sheriff’s deputies found two pit bulls sitting in their own filth, shackled with heavy chains and with bugs crawling all over them behind his home on U.S. 29.
The same day, another deputy shot and killed a dog, an arrest report says, and neighbors said the aggressive pit bull belonged to the Oswalds.
Oswaldalso pleaded no contest Tuesday to a marijuana charge, as investigators found marijuana growing in his backyard, according to his arrest report.
State Attorney Bill Eddins said his office had asked that Oswald serve 11 months and 15 days in the Escambia County Jail as a stipulation of his probation.
But Circuit Judge Gary Bergosh, who withheld adjudication on all charges, felt that Oswald only needed to be placed on probation for three years, according to court records.
“It’s our policy to take a very firm position in these animal cruelty cases, particularly where the extent of cruelty is this significant,” Eddins said, explaining that prosecutors would have accepted a plea where no jail time would be served.
“There was more than oneanimal involved, and there were other charges as well involving the marijuana.” “So WTF was this animal abusers let off for?? what does that say to other would-be animal abusers?? This is so wrong…it stinks…this is not taking a firm position against animal abusers…it’s letting them get off Scott free…this is a down right in-justice. Judge Gary Bergosh needs to booted off the judicial system!!”

This is the second time this week that Bergosh has gone below the sentences asked for by prosecutors. The other case involved 27-year-old Michael Davis, who was convicted of manslaughter late last year in the shooting death of 16-year-old Alonzo Knight Jr.“I would suggest this Bergosh buggers off out of the Judicial system then, as he obviously does not uphold the same values as normal people; who view these as heinous crimes”
On Tuesday, prosecutors asked for Davis to be sentenced to 30 years in prison, the maximum recommended by the state Department of Corrections. Instead, Bergosh handed down a six-year prison sentence, infuriating Knight’s family. “I am not surprised…this is disgraceful, a boys life only warrants 6 years from the offender
The minimum recommended sentence for the manslaughter charge is 10 years.
Prosecutors said they will appeal that sentence.
The case against John Oswald’s wife, 34-year-old Amanda Oswald, is still pending. She is set to appear in court today, and Eddins said prosecutors will be asking for a continuance so they can talk to John Oswald and get more information about the case.
