TWO men and three teenagers are to go on trial accused of animal cruelty after cats were set on by lurcher dogs in Workington.

Daniel James Porter, 18, of Eskdale Cresent and Jamie Atkinson, 19, of Minster Close, along with a 17-year-old and two 15-year-old boys, have been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal under the Animal Welfare Act.

They pleaded not guilty to the alleged offence at West Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Workington FRI and were bailed on condition they do not have custody or control of a dog or cat in a public place ahead of the full case being heard.

Police joined forces and the RSPCA investigated after a number of cats were attacked and at least one killed by lurchers in the Workington area in June.
