Circus Owners Get Show Cause Notices

Comments Off on Circus Owners Get Show Cause Notices

MARGAO: After an inspection of the animals at the Moonlight circus that haven’t been fed properly since March 1, show cause notices were issued to the owners of the circus prior to cancellation of their performing animal registration with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and cancellation of the registration of the circus by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).

This was in pursuant to complaints filed by Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA), Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre (WRCC) and the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO).

After the crime branch arrested the circus owner and five other persons on charges of human trafficking and rape, the animals at the circus were left to starve and were recently shifted to Kudal in Maharashtra.

Puja Mitra, campaign manager, FIAPO, who first took up the issue with the Goa forest department about the welfare of the elephants at the circus site along with the other animals has appealed to the government to set up an animal rescue centre in Goa.

Mitra, who is based in Goa, added that with the creation of rescue centres, the elephants rescued from circuses can live the remainder of their life in natural surroundings without being forced to perform. “While it is cruel for any animal to be used in performance, it is even more so, in the case of the elephant,” added Mitra.

During the inspection of the circus that has four elephants, the AWBI team noted that the animals were also being subjected to cruelty using spiked foot belt to restrict their movement which are banned. Dr R M Kharb, chairman of the AWBI, pointed out that this is in violation of Section 11(1) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and that transportation rules had also been violated.

Kharb also requested that ‘immediate’ steps be taken to ask the Maharashtra wildlife department to move the wild animals especially the elephants from the Moonlight circus to safe shelters and a final decision about their rehabilitation be taken in due course.

“The effort now should be to remove the animals to safe holdings immediately while the formalities and paper work can continue, otherwise the animals are liable to disappear to unknown places,” said Suparna Ganguly, co-founder trustee of CUPA.

“PLEASE SIGN THESE 2 Pre-Written PETITIONS…The Chinese Government & relevant departments must show it’s people & the world, that they do not & will not, condone such random acts of horrific, sadistic killings to innocent beings; by their police force in full view of the public & children!! Those responsible should be made to pay for their sadistic torture!”

Justice For Pet Dog, Brutally Killed By Police, Langzhong, China!!

Please Help To Get Justice For Dog Beaten To Death By Police

On 4th March 2014, police in Langzhong City, Sichuan, China, brutally killed a pet dog belonging to a homeless man. The killing was done during the day near a primary school for no reason at all and is totally unacceptable.

The dog was still chained when the police forcefully removed it from it’s owner who could do nothing but watch while his companion was beaten to death with sticks and shovels in front of him.

The police later issued a statement defending their actions, saying that the dog’s presence might have posed a threat to human safety but this just shows the ignorance and cruelty involved in their actions and shows the world how unfeeling they are.

The people in charge in the relevant departments of the government now need to show the world that they condemn this killing, along with Chinese citizens and people around the world, by implementing the Small Animal Protection Law.

Groups on Weibo are condemning the killing and petitions have been started.

Help Chinese activists and animal lovers get protection for their animals.
Thank you

Petition 2 to sign By Together for Animals in China (TACN)

Demand justice over police killing the dog of a homeless man in Langzhong. Demand animal cruelty laws in China and stop people from committing further atrocities against the innocent and vulnerable.

Homeless man’s dog beaten to death by police!

Letter of strong protest against the horrific acts of police officials who are supposed to protect our society from violence.

We were horrified by what happened on March 4th, on the busy streets of Langzhong, in broad daylight. A stray dog, the gentle friend and companion of a homeless man, was seized by police and brutally beaten to death with a shovel and a metal pole in front of the owner of the dog, the homeless man, and a crowed of pedestrians.

This horrific violence took place near a primary school, where children could easily see what was happening.

Two of the most vulnerable individuals in our society, the innocent animal and the helpless man, were dealt some of the most violent and degrading treatment imaginable by the very people who are supposed to be protecting society from violence.

No thought was spared for the psychological impact of this terrifying, bloody act on the adults and children who witnessed it. Nor did it occur to the police that this gruesome death was inflicted in broad daylight in the vicinity of a primary school.

How have the people appointed to protect the innocent and vulnerable become so debased? Our police officials, who should be a source of pride to us, are behaving like monsters.

We, the undersigned, ask that the police be legally forbidden from committing further atrocities against the innocent and vulnerable. We would like our children to grow up in a society where they can feel confident that the police will protect people and animals; where the police are known for their kindness and bravery instead of their violence and sadism; where they behave with honour instead of depravity.—

More detailed information and the latest updates of this incident will be posted both on the TACN facebook page (www.facebook.com/togetherforanimalsinchina) and website (tacn.org). Please be sure to follow us on facebook for the updates.

Death threats for star Cheltenham jockey in row over dead horses

Comments Off on Death threats for star Cheltenham jockey in row over dead horses

“I have always disagreed with horse racing because most of the horses are usually too young to compete”

By JOHN STEVENS

Ruby Walsh attacked on Twitter for comments describing animals as replaceable

  • Ruby Walsh created controversy when he said animals are replaceable after Our Conor suffered fatal fall at Cheltenham on first day
  • One tweet: ‘Ruby Walsh I hope you get your skull crushed by one of the horses you’re so heartlessly flippant about…’
  • On Wednesday, Mail reported how Walsh, who has twice won the Grand National, said there is a difference between death of a human and a horse

A star jockey has received death threats after he played down the death of a horse during a race.

Star jockey Ruby Walsh (above) has received death threats after he played down the death of a horse during a race. Above, Walsh on Faugheen celebrates victory in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle during Ladies Day at Cheltenham on Wednesday

Animal rights campaigners have accused the 34-year-old Irishman of being callous, while others have bombarded him with threats.

One tweeted: ‘Ruby Walsh I hope you get your skull crushed by one of the horses you’re so heartlessly flippant about. Animals should not die for sport.’

Another added: ‘Shame more jockeys aren’t killed instead of beautiful horses!!!!!! All jockeys are complete c**ts!! No horse is replaceable!’

Ruby Walsh created controversy when he said that animals are replaceable after Our Conor suffered a fatal fall at Cheltenham on the first day of racing. Above, Our Conor (right) ridden by jockey Daniel Mullins

While another wrote: ‘@Ruby Walsh Don’t worry if you die in a race, there’ll be someone to replace you too.’

On Wednesday, the Mail reported how Ruby Walsh, who has twice won the Grand National, said that there is a difference between the death of a human and a horse.

He said: ‘It’s sad, but horses are animals, outside your back door. Humans are humans. They are inside your back door.

‘You can replace a horse. You can’t replace a human being. That’s my feeling on it.’

Dene Stansall of campaign group Animal Aid told the Mail: ‘He has shown callousness for the animals that have earned him a good living.

‘It’s completely disrespectful. To treat the death of a horse in such a way shows that they are merely machines for people to make money.

‘Ruby Walsh is the leading jockey at Cheltenham and wants to support the event as much as he can, but you cannot disregard the lives of horses just because they are not humans.

‘We would expect more from him. This shows he has got little empathy for a horse that really suffered before it died.’

‘Lacking respect’: Ruby Walsh, seen after taking a record sixth Mares’ Hurdle title at the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday, has been attacked by animal rights activists

Ingrid Newkirk, founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), said: ‘Walsh’s comments expose the true emotion behind horseracing: greed. They are deeply offensive to anyone who has ever loved and lost a horse or other beloved animal companion.

‘Unlike Walsh, horses are not unfeeling but experience joy, anxiety, fear and affection, just as human beings do.’

Mr Walsh last night declined to comment on the threats against him. He told the Mail: ‘I didn’t even know about it.’ Dozens of messages criticising Walsh have been sent directly to his Twitter account.

One user, with the profile name Amy, wrote: ‘Do you hate horses because you are so short and this makes you angry?’

Another posted: ‘YOUR (sic) AN IDIOT!! ‘A horse can be replaced’ really??? So can jockeys so I hope you fall off a horse & get trampled!’

Since the furore, Mr Walsh’s father, trainer Ted Walsh, has compared Britain’s attitude on the issue to that in Ireland.

He said of the UK: ‘It’s a funny country. They can remember the names of horses that got blown up by the bombs in London but not the names of the people riding them.’

The British Horse racing Association has stressed that the welfare of horses is ‘paramount’ at races such as Cheltenham. “So I have to ask….why are they racing horses on flat or over jumps when the horses are not mentally & physically ready for such a task>”

A spokesman said: ‘Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse.

‘In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team.” I.E put them to sleep, because they can be fixed but wouldn’t be worth any money to the owners or syndicate if they are not bring the money home;plenty more being bred for this very reason!!!”

‘Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

‘If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

‘British Racing is open and transparent about the risks involved in the sport – the BHA Veterinary team monitors injury rates at every licensed racecourse. Over the last 15 years, the equine fatality rate has fallen by one third to 0.2 per cent of all runners. “OK, then go look at the Animal Aids ” Race Horse Death”? That will tell you exactly where, when & who was the jockey….I don’t know of any other site where I could get that information from!! http://www.horsedeathwatch.com/

‘Despite the best efforts of all involved, as with participation in any sport involving speed and athleticism, there remains an inherent risk of injury.’

STOP PRESS: REPORTS OF THIRD HORSE DEAD AT CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL

Posted 12 March 2014

A four-year-old horse, inexperienced over the jumps and ridden by a young, inexperienced jockey, became the second victim of the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. Akdam broke a foreleg racing in the 16.40 Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. On the Festival’s opening day (Tuesday), Our Conor suffered what turned out to be fatal spinal injuries in the Champion Hurdle race.Akdam was running in a hotly contested, crowded race, featuring 24 horses. His ‘conditional’ jockey, Josh Hamer, was up against leading riders including, AP McCoy, Tom Scudamore and Ruby Walsh.Akdam had been entered into 20 previous races, 11 of them hurdle events, the others on the flat or all-weather courses. In fact, he was bred to race on the flat but ended up at a very young age being put over jumps.Says Dene Stansall, Horseracing Consultant, Animal Aid:

‘Akdam died in a race that was rough messy and hazardous. No doubt racing’s apologists will offer yet another unconvincing excuse for why this horse suffered this violent end.

Animal Aid’s recent report points to Cheltenham as being the course on which more horses die than any other in the country. Akdam’s brutal end brings to 50 the number who have perished at the Gloucestershire course since Animal Aid launched the online Deathwatch database in March 2007.’

Stop press: It is reported this evening (Wednesday) that the Festival has claimed a third victim. Five-year-old Stack The Deck was destroyed after fracturing a knee in the 17.15 Champion Bumper.News Link:http://www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/NEWS/news_horse/ALL/3066//

National TV ad campaign seeks backing for anti-soring bill

Comments Off on National TV ad campaign seeks backing for anti-soring bill

“In my opinion the only real way to outlaw this cruel sadistic practice; is not to have shows like the ‘Big Lick. After all, it’s the prize money most are after, do they really care about the horrific injuries & burns, they inflict on the horses?”

Urge Congress to End Horse Soring

Published on 17 Mar 2014

New TV ad campaign by The Humane Society of the United States calls on federal lawmakers to support H.R. 1518/S. 1406, the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act.

A national television advertising campaign backed by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the latest strategy in promoting a federal bill aimed at toughening regulations and penalties around the illegal practice of soring horses.

The advertisement is pushing for the passage of the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, H.R. 1518/S. 1406.

It urges viewers to call their federal lawmakers and ask them to pass the bill.

It began airing in Kentucky on Sunday, urging viewers to call Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul and ask them to support the PAST Act.

The ad campaign would expand to other media markets around the country in the coming weeks, the HSUS said.

The commercial is the latest effort by the HSUS to urge Congress to pass the bill against soring – the illegal practice of inflicting pain to horses’ legs and feet to force them to perform an exaggerated high-stepping gait known as the Big Lick.

The Senate bill has been introduced by their Republican colleague, Kelly Ayotte, of New Hampshire, and it has 51 cosponsors. The House bill has 268 cosponsors.

The bill will fortify an existing federal law, the Horse Protection Act, which was passed in 1970 to eliminate the abuse of Tennessee walking horses and other similar breeds.

The HSUS says the bill is so weak that cheating and violations have been rampant for decades. The PAST Act would end the failed industry self-policing system; ban the show-ring use of chains, stacks, and excessively heavy shoes (devices that used in the soring process); and increase penalties for violators.

Kentucky is the heart of horse country in the US, and Senators McConnell and Paul should support this critical legislation to protect horses from the cruelty of soring,” said Pam Rogers, Kentucky state director for the HSUS.

“No other breeds are subjected to this kind of intentional form of torture, and it is a disgrace that it exists anywhere.

“Only an upgrade of the federal law will put an end to the horrible horse abuse that still plagues the ‘Big Lick’ show world.”

The PAST Act is endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association (and every other state veterinary medical association), the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the American Horse Council, along with a host of other national animal protection, veterinary, and horse industry organizations.

In 2011, an HSUS investigation into Tennessee walking horse trainer Jackie McConnell’s stable in Collierville, Tennessee, revealed shocking cruelty to horses to a national audience, which led to the introduction of the PAST Act.

The investigator recorded horses being whipped, kicked, shocked in the face and intentionally burned with caustic chemicals. The new commercial shows footage from this investigation.

Amid Complaints of Animal Neglect, ‘Worst Zoo in the World’ Closes Its Doors in Croatia

Comments Off on Amid Complaints of Animal Neglect, ‘Worst Zoo in the World’ Closes Its Doors in Croatia

“As a member Country of the EU ( Croatia joined only last July 2013 ) I have to ask why this filthy, decaying & pitiful excuse of a zoo; has been allowed to have its doors open for so long???”

Split, Croatia’s second largest city, is situated on the Adriatic coastline and is one of the country’s most popular vacation destinations thanks to its location and historic monuments, some of which date back to the Roman times.

While tourists have often been satisfied with their visit to Split, one particular attraction – the Split Zoo – has left many visitors disturbed.

A number of low-level reviews have been left about the unaccredited zoo on TripAdvisor, with one visitor stating, “This is by far the worst zoo I have ever seenThe bears had … feces everywhere … and the food being given to the animals looked like it was completely rotten … Someone please shut this place down and send the animals somewhere else!!!”

Another reviewer reported, “The zoo in Split is located at the very top of the Marjan Hill and can be reached by foot from the old town in about 20 – 30 minutes. Unfortunately, on the top of the hill, you will find a very sad place and tears may easily wet your eyes.”

TripAdvisor

For years, animal protection groups in Croatia have been trying their best to shut this zoo down, deemed the “worst zoo in the world” by tourists for its poor care of animals and small, dirty enclosures.

Non-profit advocacy group Animal Friends Croatia sent a letter to Split’s city authorities urging them to close the zoo in both 2005 and 2012, calling it a “genuine animal torture space” in their 2005 letter.

After years of pressure and a recent exposé and call to action in the national newspaperJutarnji List, the zoo has finally decided to close its doors.

Exotic species should be moved elsewhere, and Marjan establish a reserve of domestic animals.

Split Zoo in Split for years was known only by the poor: astounded tourists to sites of Split, the garden is described as the worst memory of your vacation, and local activists persistently struggle to re-zoned area.

Recently all shocked by the news that Tiger Demetrius limp, and that nothing is being done to address the situation. In addition, they say that all they were in the garden, animals makes strange noises. After some time, the problem with the big cat’s paw is resolved, but strangely voting left. Combined with the generally depressed impression in the garden, say activists, tiger voting sounds really painful.

Split is better not to have any zoo than this which violate all the rules, and the animals are kept in really awful conditions – says Srdjan Marinić, president of the Society “Marjan”, which this week sent a request to the Veterinary Inspection to monitor the keeping of animals and health conditions in the zoo … Read the full article at: http://www.jutarnji.hr/1168994 (Vojko Basic / Getty)

GRAPHIC MEDIA: MFA Investigation Inside Canada’s Cruel Turkey Industry

Comments Off on GRAPHIC MEDIA: MFA Investigation Inside Canada’s Cruel Turkey Industry

HELP END THE TORTURE OF TURKEYS  (Please sign petition below)

Unfortunately, the lives of turkeys on factory farms are short, brutal and filled with fear, violence and prolonged suffering.

While wild turkeys are sleek, agile and able to fly, commercial turkeys have been selectively bred to grow so large, so quickly, that many of them suffer from painful bone defects, hip joint lesions, crippling foot and leg deformities, and fatal heart attacks.

This genetic manipulation creates birds who are so large they cannot even reproduce naturally, rendering artificial semen collection and insemination the sole means of turkey reproduction at breeding facilities like this one.

Even though domestic turkeys have been genetically manipulated for enormous growth, these birds still retain their gentle, inquisitive, and social natures.

Turkeys are “sentient vertebrates and all the available evidence shows that they have a very similar range of feelings as mammalian species,” Dr. Ian Duncan has stated. “Poultry can suffer by feeling pain, fear and stress.”

In fact, animal behaviourists, veterinarians, and scientists now agree that turkeys are sensitive and intelligent animals with their own unique personalities, much like the dogs and cats we all know and love.

Although cruelty and violence are standard practice for Canada’s turkey producers, caring consumers can help end the needless suffering of turkeys and other farmed animals by choosing a compassionate vegan diet.

“If you can’t go vegan or even vegetarian, at least try some Quorn Mince instead of Beef Mince to make Quorn Spaghetti Bolognese. Here are some more recipes for to try out (I use Quorn instead of meat to make just about any traditional dish)  substituting Animal Meat for Quorn…is lower in fat & better for you!! CRUELTY CRITICS

“The video … demonstrates multiple acts of extreme cruelty to animals. The acts inflicted protracted and severe pain and suffering needlessly.” Greg Burkett, DVM

“The fact that these birds were killed in this brutal fashion in full view of the Barn Supervisor suggests that this is a standard of practice at this facility and not the actions of a rogue employee.” Debi Zimmermann, DVM, PhD

“The euthanasia practices depicted in the video I saw were inhumane; they did not result in immediate unconsciousness. It is not appropriate to kick, punch, or swing birds. This is gratuitous cruelty.”  Ian Duncan, PhD, Canada’s leading expert on poultry welfare ________________________________________________________________________ “The euthanasia methods were clearly not acceptable and the industry needs to develop better methods. • Footage shows dozens of puppies and kittens taken from mothers and killed
  • They can be heard screaming in terror as they are restrained by researchers
  • They are later killed and dissected, before bodies are dumped in bin as waste
  • One employee can be heard saying ‘That’s you done, you can go in our bin’
  • Animals are as young as four-weeks-old – and their mothers are also killed
  • Video filmed by investigator working undercover at facility for eight months

  • Lab owned by pharmaceutical giant Merck Sharp & Dohme
  • MSD says it did not break any laws and adheres to animal testing regulation

A horrific video has emerged showing puppies and kittens panicking as they wait to be dissected at an animal testing laboratory.

The footage was filmed as part of an undercover investigation by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) at the government-licensed centre.

It shows the animals – some as young as four-weeks-old – screaming, crying and whimpering as they are taken from their mothers and killed.

The video was taken by an investigator, known as ‘Susie’, who worked at the laboratory for eight months until December last year, according to the Sunday Express.

It shows puppies and kittens shrieking in terror as they are restrained by researchers – just seconds before they are given a lethal injection and cut up for examination.

Meanwhile, a black puppy can be heard screaming and thrashing around as two researchers prepare to take its blood at the centre, which is owned by US pharmaceutrical giant Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD).

And a young canine yelps loudly as a female employee struggles to find a suitable vein in his leg in which to inject him.

Oh dear. What a fuss, what a fuss,’ the woman can be heard saying. ‘Perhaps your leg was a bit sore. Was it from all those bleeds? Oh dear, oh dear.’

The employee eventually administers the lethal dose after trying the puppy’s other leg – before commenting: ‘That’s gotcha.’

Family: Many of the animals are born at the laboratory for the sole purpose of being dissected for examination at just a few weeks old – with their healthy mothers (including this dog, above) often killed just hours later Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2571532/Video-shows-distress-puppies-kittens-waiting-dissected-animal-testing-laboratory.html#ixzz2wSICAorm Follow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook

She then adds: ‘Put up a bit of a fight, didn’t you, yeah?’ The footage also shows scenes of puppies and kittens lying on operating tables as employees insert needles and cutting equipment into their bodies. In one particularly horrific scene, a researcher lifts a motionless puppy onto a table, saying: ‘Yes, this is where it gets messy. Right, OK. Come on then little fella.

Waiting to die: A staggering 92 puppies, 10 female dogs and at least 15 kittens were killed during the project

‘Let’s make sure you have departed before we start getting our bits and pieces.

‘A staggering 92 puppies, 10 adult female dogs and at least 15 kittens were killed during the investigation at the centre, according to BUAV.

However, the undercover investigator managed to rescue two adult dogs, Bonnie and Billie, and a five-month-old puppy, Oliver, during the project – while two others were rehomed.

Many of the animals are believed to have been born at the laboratory for the sole purpose of being dissected for examination at a young age – with their healthy mothers often killed just hours later.

Others had reportedly been imported into the UK from overseas breeding farms at only a few weeks old – causing them to suffer from ulcers, high temperatures and weight loss.

During the eight-month period, the facility also dissected a number of rabbits and chickens, according to BUAV.

Today, Michelle Thew, chief executive of BUAV, said the union had released the video in a bid to add transparency to the public debate about animal testing.

Action: Home Office minister, Norman Baker (above), is believed to have called for a full report into the laboratory’s activities

‘This is a secret the research industry would never want to be released into the public domain,’ she said.

‘Millions of families throughout the UK who share their homes and lives with cats and dogs will be appalled by these revelations.

‘It is unacceptable, not only that these animals are suffering and dying in this way, but that many of them could have been released into loving homes instead of being killed and discarded for convenience sake.’

She added that thousands of dogs and hundreds of cats are used in research every year in UK, despite widespread concern about their use.

Meanwhile, Home Office minister, Norman Baker, told the Sunday Express his department had carried out ‘a number’ of inspections at the  facility over the past year – but added that he has now called for a full report into the centre’s activities.

MSD told MailOnline that it ‘adheres to all regulatory standards of testing and development of vaccines’.

It added that it is obliged by law to test certain drugs on animals, including vaccines for kennel cough, parvovirus and feline calicivirus.

A spokesman said: ‘Animal well-being is core to our mission. All MSD animal health research is performed by qualified, trained personnel.

‘Our facilities are in full compliance with all laws and regulations, and procedures and facilities are regularly reviewed and inspected by relevant regulatory authorities.’
