Pregnant dog burned alive, gets help from local animal rescue group

Comments Off on Pregnant dog burned alive, gets help from local animal rescue group

"OMG...this is beyond sickening, I can't see the dog walking willingly into fire, so she was either burnt or doused in some type of chemical; on purpose. I pray they catch the scum that did this & will keep her in my prayers, in the hopes that all her pups make it & she finds a forever loving home!"

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A pregnant dog that was severely burned is doing much better after being taken in by a local animal rescue group.

“Someone did something unkind to this very sweet dog,” says Donna Casamento with Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

Pregnant dog burnt is carrying puppies

It’s something so unkind, it’s horrific to view.  Nina, a terrier mix, has second to third degree burns on her chest, all the way down to her legs.

“It’s been a very very sad situation. We weren’t sure when we first got her how the burns happened,” said Casamento.

But Donna thinks Nina’s burns may have been intentional. And what makes this worse, she’s pregnant.

“Whether she walked into a fire on the ground, like a fire pit or was pushed into a fire pit. Dogs don’t walk into those kind of situations,” she said.”

Now the race is on to save the unborn dogs while Nina recovers. “It’s somewhat difficult for us to tell exactly if the puppies are still alive yet,” Casamento said.

Nina was brought up yesterday from Miami-Dade rescue.  Veterinarians here are taking care of her around the clock. “Every couple of hours, she’s getting this applied to her and then several baths throughout the day,” said Donna. “We’re giving her pain medication about every three or four hours at this point.”

The hope is eventually to find her and her babies, a loving home. “In spite what she’s been through, all she wants to do is sit with her head in our lap and get love. This is a great dog,” she said.

Vets say once Nina becomes comfortable, they’ll be able to perform an ultrasound to see if the puppies are alive. They’re asking the community to help with donations for Nina’s care. Find out how you can help at their website, http://www.bdrr.org/ .

Miami-Dade animal rescue is investigating the case.

Slightly Graphic video; Animals Asia: Anger and sorrow as 13 more bears die in Halong

Comments Off on Slightly Graphic video; Animals Asia: Anger and sorrow as 13 more bears die in Halong

“This is cruel, despicable, illegal & heartbreaking. Caught & imprisoned from cub to adult in tiny rusty cages; their world is one of pain, irritation, infection, teeth pulling & repulsive food; literally going stir crazy!! They simply won’t know what it is like to live as a wild bear should, with fresh air, lush grass & trees etc. They can not be returned to the wild as they simply wouldn’t be able to survive; having been kept a prisoner most of their pitiful lives!. Although the video documentary is 43 minutes long, I urge you to watch it, see how Animal Asia started undercover investigation to save these sentient beings. It is hard to imagine how these beautiful bears can still be bought or caught, entrapped some wear a metal jacket around them, with a tube constantly fixed; to extract bile. But it’s not just bile, parts of the bear can also be acquired; the farmers will make money dead or alive.  Public demand warrants this abuse; even though there are now synthetic bear bile products, there is no need for these bears to live & die in a cage; in constant pain. These bears need to be rescued so please help by signing the petition at the end of this blog & share amongst your social media friends etc.”

29 January 2015

Thirteen more bears have died at Cau Trang Bear Farm in Halong Bay, Vietnam bringing the total death toll since November last year to 18.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION BELOW

It leaves Cau Trang bear bile farm – at the centre of an international campaign demanding permission to rescue the bears – with only nine remaining bears. The campaign had been backed by over 80,000 animal lovers including celebrities such as Ricky Gervais, Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Fry and Olivia Newton-John.

In the two months since Animals Asia inspected three farms in the vicinity of the World Heritage Site, 26 of the 49 moon bears – a protected species – are said to have died leaving just 23 alive in Halong City.

(Some scenes are graphic) Although this video is long, please watch it to understand what happens to these poor bears & how Animal Asia came about to rescue them!

“Published on 13 Sep 2012

Watch the hard-hitting, undercover documentary showing the brutality of the bear bile industry across China, which recently won a top award at the Fifth China Ya’an International Panda, Animals and Nature Film Week. The documentary was made by three independent film-makers who devoted four years to its production, visiting small and large bear bile farms, revealing “legal” farms with conditions that are clearly breaking current regulations for such farms in China.”

Having previously focussed just on Cau Trang Farm, Animals Asia is now pressing the Vietnamese government to allow it to bring all 23 remaining bears in the Halong City area to its Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in nearby Tam Dao.

The latest news has left Animals Asia staff devastated and angry that bears have been allowed to die when an offer for their rescue remains on the table.

Authorities, concerned that the bears are being slaughtered for parts for use in traditional medicine have also ordered that TV cameras cover their burial – as interest in the case continues to grow in Vietnam.

Animals Asia’s Vietnam Director Tuan Bendixsen said:

“The eyes of the country are now on Quang Ninh province and the relevant authorities to see that right course of action is taken. We cannot be sure of the exact details surrounding the bears’ deaths but we can say the farmer chose to let them die. We offered to treat the animals and the offer was rejected. It was the farmer who took the decision to let the animals die. It was a conscious choice. We can only speculate as to his motives.”

The Central Forest Protection Department (FPD) has informed Animals Asia that it is urgently requesting the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) form an investigation team.

The team, expected to include representatives from Central FPD, CITES and MARD’s Nature Conservation Department, would travel to Quang Ninh province to investigate the exact causes of death, whether the correct procedures were followed to dispose of the bodies and to ascertain how the remaining bears can be saved.

Animals Asia founder and CEO, Jill Robinson MBE, said:

“These deaths are utterly tragic and unnecessary. It’s heart breaking to learn that so many bears have spent years suffering on the farms, and have now needlessly died when there is a sanctuary ready and willing to give them the life they deserve just a few hours down the road.”

“Through the increased local coverage of the deaths of these bears, Vietnam is seeing the reality and brutality of bear bile farming. While their deaths have shone a spotlight on the industry in Vietnam, there was no need for them to die at all.”

“There have been enough delays and we’ve seen what that has achieved. The time has come to act, and act now. We are beseeching the authorities – let us save the remaining Halong Bay bears before it’s too late.”

Nearly 2,000 bears remain in cages in Vietnam being farmed for their bile for use in traditional medicine – despite the practice being made illegal. Bear bile farming technically became illegal in 1992 when Ministry of Forestry approval became necessary to keep bears. In 2002, bears came under CITES group I, making their exploitation strictly illegal. However it wasn’t until 2005 that the first species-specific regulations were enacted.

Animals Asia has rescued over 500 bears from bear bile farming as part of its work to end bear bile farming in China and Vietnam.

HELP US SAVE THE HALONG BAY BEARS

Emaciated, missing limbs, some near blind, others with open wounds, all starving – these are the animal collateral of Vietnam’s cruel bear bile industry.

Help us force the farmer who profited for years from these poor bears to hand them over to Animals Asia for urgent medical care and rehabilitation.

Sign the petition and ask the Vietnamese government to remove the bears from the farm so Animals Asia can give them the care they deserve.

Animals Asia was founded in 1998 and is devoted to ending the barbaric practice of bear bile farming and improving the welfare of animals in China and Vietnam.

The ISSUES ABOUT BEAR BILE FARMING

More than 10,000 bears – mainly moon bears, but also sun bears and brown bears – are kept on bile farms in China, and just under 2,000 in Vietnam. The bears are milked regularly for their bile, which is used in traditional medicine.

Bile is extracted using various painful, invasive techniques, all of which cause massive infection in the bears. This cruel practice continues despite the availability of a large number of effective and affordable herbal and synthetic alternatives.

Most farmed bears are kept in tiny cages. In China, the cages are sometimes so small that the bears are unable to turn around or stand on all fours. Some bears are put into cages as cubs and never released. Bears may be kept caged like this for up to 30 years. Most farmed bears are starved, dehydrated and suffer from multiple diseases and malignant tumours that ultimately kill them.

“PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO HELP SAVE THE REMAINING BEARS! “

DISGUSTING;-“Kill greyhounds, don’t rehome them” Callous advice from Irish Coursing Club 28 January 2015. The Irish Coursing Club is callously advising greyhound owners to destroy unwanted greyhounds instead of rehoming them. In a damning internal report, uncovered by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, owners are advised: “Do not give away unwanted greyhounds. It is far better to put them painlessly to sleep.”

What constitutes putting a dog “painlessly to sleep” is not specified in the document.

Entitled “A Summary of Directives, Instructions and Guidance Notes Issued by the Executive Committee of the Irish Coursing Club to Club Secretaries, Control Stewards Judges and Slippers” it conveys the contempt with which coursers regard greyhounds incapable of winning money for their owners. Dogs “that have run a number of times during the season” without success are branded “no-hopers”.

The document also reveals the use of injured greyhounds in hare coursing. In a section headed “Running Of Injured Greyhounds“, it states “As the implementation of a rule to cater for the running of injured greyhounds in order to qualify for prize money would be difficult, the Executive Committee ask that the stewards of meetings use their judgement in relation to the matter.”

The coursers’ Instructions and Guidance document leaves no doubt that both hares and greyhounds are victims of this cruel bloodsport. The time is now for the government to ban this shameful activity.

Dear Minister,

I am one of the majority who want hare coursing outlawed. Among the injuries recorded are broken legs, damaged toes and dislocated hips. Every season, hare injuries and deaths are documented.
I ask you to please act on the wishes of the majority, show compassion
and permanently revoke the licence.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

William Legget, 19, of Bedminster, Bristol, tied adult dog Balue to a bannister and punched, stamped and kicked her before turning on his puppy Nala, who he beat and threatened with a knife.

The older dog  (above) escaped serious injury but Nala suffered a broken hip, jaw, cheek and a fractured skull.

William Legget has been jailed after being caught on CCTV beating and severely injuring his husky dogs, http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/01/22/24F3A12600000578-0-image-a-3_1421952243911.jpg

District Judge Lynne Matthews jailed Legget for 17 weeks after telling him he was ‘not a decent human being’. She said she was ‘staggered’ by his cruelty and imposed a life ban on him keeping any animals, adding she ‘would not trust him with a goldfish’.

She also said the case should be reported to social services after hearing that Legget had a young child. Bristol Magistrates’ Court heard the beatings took place at Legget’s former home in Gravesend, Kent, in February last year.

Legget appears to have grabbed one of the dogs by the head or neck in this CCTV still

When he was arrested Legget told police the dogs had been ‘naughty’ and said his only fault was not knowing when to ‘stop telling them off.’ Judge Matthews said: ‘With the puppy it wasn’t a slight fracture but the bone has broken away. ‘The veterinary surgeon said that break was a result of extreme force. You applied that extreme force.’

Legget admitted three counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and two counts of failing to protect it from pain, suffering and injury.

John Stokes, defending, said his client had both emotional and behavioural problems but had a partner and a young child to look after.

The huskies abused by Legget – Nala (pictured left) suffered a broken hip and Balue (right) was also beaten

Legget was jailed for 17 weeks. Both dogs have now been re-homed.

Petition Success: Horse-Drawn Carriage Ban Introduced in New York ( if approved by city council)

Comments Off on Petition Success: Horse-Drawn Carriage Ban Introduced in New York ( if approved by city council)

Petition letter

“Thanks to everyone who signed petitions regards NYC carriage horses; with a bit of luck it will be no more!”

Target: New York Mayor, Bill de Blasio

Goal: Applaud taking action to eliminate horse-drawn carriages from New York City’s streets

Horse-drawn carriages have been a staple of the New York City tourism industry for a century. New York City’s Irish community makes up the majority of the horse-drawn carriage industry, and it has been intent on keeping its livelihood prosperous. However, animal rights activists cater to the opposing agenda, urging the New York City council to put an end to the city’s horse-drawn carriage industry. Their animal welfare concerns have been heard: Mayor Bill de Blasio will soon introduce legislation to end the horse-drawn carriage industry.

The horses of New York City that are forced to work long, grueling hours, and only given rest in small increments of time deserve fulfilling lives. They are not let out to pasture when their work in the city is complete each day. When the horses are on duty they are forced to dodge vehicles, endure excessive air pollution, and risk their lives for tourist entertainment. Every minute that a horse is on the streets of New York City it is at risk of being hit by a car. Mayor de Blasio is genuinely concerned about the welfare of these animals.

Of course, he has received significant backlash from some members of the community, as well as those who share ownership or are employed by the horse-drawn carriage industry. De Blasio has promised to assist these individuals in finding new jobs if the ban is honored.

When Mayor Bill de Blasio was vying for his current position he was heavily supported by animal rights activists. With their influence, along with a push from activists at Force Change and all over the country, Mayor de Blasio has unveiled a bill that, if approved by city council, will end the cruel horse-drawn carriage industry of New York City. De Blasio has publicly said, before and after election, that the horses’ welfare is his main concern.

Commend Mayor de Blasio for honoring his animal welfare stance by introducing this ban on horse-drawn carriages.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor de Blasio,

Before you were elected as Mayor of New York City, you took a controversial, yet necessary stance against the horse-drawn carriage industry. You have officially kept your pre- and post-election promises by introducing legislation set to end the cruel industry. I am writing to thank you for your compassion towards the carriage horses of New York City.

It is my hope that the city council favors your legislation and passes it with no hesitation. Please use the signatures that this supportive petition generates to encourage the council to show the horses compassion. You and I know that the horse-drawn carriage industry is archaic and insufficient for the needs of the working horses; it is time for the rest of the city to share this sentiment.

Thank you for fighting for the horses of New York City. Countless mayors before you did not rise to this challenge. You are a valuable asset to New York City.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

NFL Player Terrence Cody Could Face Animal Cruelty Charges

Comments Off on NFL Player Terrence Cody Could Face Animal Cruelty Charges

“I believe his dog died due to worms, & if so, in my opinion, yes this idiot is guilty of animal abuse! The majority of dog owners know that treatment for worms is a must; without worming tablets, dogs can get worms & die if not treated immediately! I can’t believe a man of this stature wouldn’t know about worms in dogs; they are a basic provision for dogs & tablets cost very little! I’m sure he had enough money to by some worming tablets, besides if the dog was under a vets practice, it’s something that they would probably have treated the dog for, or given the owner advice on how to buy tablets & treat the dog for worms; whilst under its regular checkups etc.!”

The Baltimore Ravens will cut nose tackle Terrence Cody – who has been accused of animal cruelty – right after the Super Bowl, the team announced Friday.

NFL Player Terrence Cody

Baltimore police confirmed that Cody is below investigation and could face animal cruelty charges but declined additional comment. Baltimore County state attorney Scott Shellenberger declined to supply details about the alleged incident that sparked the investigation. He mentioned his office will ascertain if criminal charges are appropriate by late next week.

The Baltimore Sun reported that the investigation stems from an incident with a dog. The Ravens did not cite a purpose in a statement announcing the decision to terminate Cody’s contract, but the team is aware of the investigation.

Cody’s agent Peter Schaffer issued a statement that mentioned his client’s dog died due to worms. “There was no animal cruelty,” Schaffer mentioned. “If this affects at all my client’s ability to get a job, I am going to do every thing in my legal energy to guard his rights.”

Cody, 26, was scheduled to turn out to be an unrestricted free of charge agent on March ten, when his one-year, $730,000 contract expires.

The Ravens had high hopes for Cody, who was drafted in the second round of the 2010 out of Alabama. But he has struggled with weight challenges, conditioning problems and injuries in the course of his five-season NFL profession. Cody, who underwent hip surgery after the 2013 season, played in just 1 game this season.

His very best season was 2011, when he started in all of the Ravens’ 16 games and created 34 tackles. He had 87 tackles and two pass deflections in his five seasons with Baltimore.

“Animal abuse of any type is unacceptable,” mentioned Tina Regester, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “We are pleased the police and the Ravens are treating this as a really serious matter.”

TACOMA, Wash. — Police say a 32-year-old Tacoma man became so enraged during an argument with his girlfriend that he killed his dog.

Nicholas James Tresness is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly kicking his pet Chihuahua so hard that the dog died, according to Loretta Cool with the Tacoma Police Department.

Stanley my little Chihuahua

This is not the dog killed, this is my little chihuahua Stanley ( just to show how big this breed is)

Tressness, who lives with his mom in the 8400 block of South Ainsworth Avenue, got into an argument with his girlfriend on the phone at about 6 p.m. on Friday. When he hung up the phone, he was so angry that he kicked a highchair and broke a coffee cup, according to Cool.

Tressness stormed into his room, and his pet Chihuahua, Duke, followed him. Cool said Tressness then kicked Duke hard enough to kill the dog.

When police arrived at the house, Tressness allegedly told the officers he has an anger problem and he didn’t mean to kill the dog. He was arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail for investigation of several charges, including animal cruelty.

Puppies dumped in a box outside San Antonio ACS, investigators need help

Comments Off on Puppies dumped in a box outside San Antonio ACS, investigators need help

“Somebody must know who these puppies belong to, imagine if they had died from the cold; could you live with that on your conscience? If they have done it once, they will do it again…please help find those born without a heart & make them pay! Everybody knows there are charity’s that will take your dogs if you can’t care for them. To simply leave them in a box outside a shelter isn’t good enough, they could have died due to weather conditions; it’s just a cowardly way out, for someone who doesn’t give a SxxT about living sentient beings…& it makes me so fxxxxxg mad!!

SAN ANTONIO, TexasAnimal cruelty investigators are asking for the public’s help to find the person responsible for dumping puppies outside Animal Care Services.

Friday morning, a veterinary technician discovered the puppies in a cardboard box with a plastic bag tied around it. ACS named them the seven dwarfs after the Snow White fairytale.

“Leaving them outside, unattended, and nobody is around. And the weather conditions are bad where they could potentially die,” said Audra Houghton, ACS field operation supervisor.

ACS asks anyone who has information about the person who left the animals to contact the organization at (210) 207-4PET (4738).(Photo: KENS 5)

In 2014, ACS issued more than 5,000 citations for animal cruelty and sent 42 cases to the district attorney‘s office. Animal cruelty investigators said San Antonio can do better. They said it comes down to public education.

“That’s probably what the biggest issue is. We have owners who can’t necessarily afford to care for their pets and don’t think they can afford to. Those are all things that can be remedied. So our officers try very hard to educate the public,” said Houghton

Abandoning animals is considered a misdemeanor with a four thousand dollar fine and up to a year in jail. The puppies appear to be two-month old Spaniel blends. ACS says the puppies are not old enough to be adopted yet. ACS asks anyone who has information about the person who left the animals to contact the organization at (210) 207-4PET (4738).

Dog ‘tortured’ in Limerick given new home in the UK

Comments Off on Dog ‘tortured’ in Limerick given new home in the UK

“There are some evil sadistic people on this planet, that should not be able to breathe the same air as decent folk. I certainly hope they are found & get what they deserve!”

By Donal O’Regan Published 23/01/2015

A PUPPY ‘tortured’ in Limerick has found a new home in England.

The public have raised over €3,400 for George, a five-month-old Terrier, to pay for veterinary operations. He was rescued by Limerick Animal Welfare (LAW) after being thrown over a wall in Southill.

George had a broken pelvis, an untreated eye injury, both hips broken, ear tips cut off, burns to his stomach and his whiskers singed off.

LAW’s Kilfinane sanctuary manager, Marie Quirke said he had been “tortured so badly that he is terrified of people.” In the past three weeks he has been nursed back to health by LAW staff.

“George came home on Saturday from Noah Veterinary Clinic in Baldoyle where orthopaedic surgeon Billy McCartney performed an operation on both his hips to stabilise them using pins. He will need to be on strictly confined rest for four weeks to allow the healing process to work. He is on antibiotics and pain relief. Little George will need to have check-ups with John O’Dwyer, a vet in Henry Street to make sure everything is going well,” said Marie, who wished to thank Mr McCartney, all at Noah, Mr O’Dwyer and everyone who contributed to George’s veterinary care fund on their Facebook page.

“Any money over and above the cost of George’s treatment will go towards two other dogs in our care who also need expensive operations to injuries sustained in road traffic accidents,” said Marie.

After a terrible start to life for George is going to live in the lap of luxury for the rest of his days in England.

Animal lover, Coral Plunkett, got in touch with LAW.

“Having read the cruelty this little man suffered and the battle to recover which faced him I didn’t think twice. I contacted LAW and offered him a home with Matt, Connie and Hannah, also adopted from LAW.

“After speaking with Marie there was no hesitation on my part in naming him George, after St George. Unfortunately George is one of many, you could say he is one of the lucky ones.

The work undertaken by LAW is just amazing and they are totally reliant on the generosity of people, so to have raised over €3,000 for George is just fantastic. Offering your heart and your home to a rescue animal is one of the best investments you will ever make, it will be repaid with love, loyalty and commitment,” said Coral.
