“I am appalled, sickend & saddened that someone could do this to such a tiny 3 month old dog. What kind of sick psycho, capable of doing such an evil thing, can manage to walk amongst us; undetected?? This poor little puppy couldn’t hurt a fly it’s so small. The bloody Empire Damansara should be willing to hand over CCTV of the car park where the dog was found! In fact, you would think they would find this such an atrocity that they would be offering any help they can; but they don’t seem to give a rats ass about it! In the same week that news about a female dog nursing its puppies was found shot dead in Muar, Johor, in Damansara Perdana, a puppy with its legs broken and mouth taped was found in the Empire Damansara parking lot.

Luckily, the puppy was rescued by the hands of an animal lover, who posted details about the condition of the three-month-old frail animal found on June 22.

The user named Vicky Liew relayed on her Facebook how she and her friend came to find the puppy that was left in a paper bag.

The rescuers only discovered later on the puppy, a good Pomeranian breed, had lost its legs when taking it to the vet.

“This poor dog had been abused because both front legs were purposely broken by inhuman people!! Stay strong puppy!!!,” Vicky wrote.

How could anyone do this??

She then tried to hunt down the culprits who abused the puppy by reporting to the management in hopes they were able to track them down through the CCTV footage, however she reported that Empire Damansara was not being cooperative on the matter.

This is just heartbreaking!

“Write on Empire Damansara page to urge them to cooperate so the people who are working on this case can lodge a report to the Department Of Veterinary Services. Keep it viral and keep it going,” she urged the public after sharing it on Dog Lovers of Malaysia group.

The latest updates on the rescued puppy, now named Summer, is living in a new home with loving owner Sim Kian Theng, and shows that the animal had been discharged from the hospital and is recovering well.

“She will be healing soon! I need strong mentality!!! I committed 24hrs care for her!!!,” wrote Sim.

Kudos to good Samaritans like Sim and Vicky, however thus far, no updates have been shared regarding the Empire Damansara management lodging a report against animal abusers, nor statement of them taking action on the case, as well as increasing security in their parking lots with adequate CCTV footage, despite the complaints by netizens and fellow residents.

Last year, the Malaysian government passed the Animal Welfare Act 2015 – a new comprehensive Act with fines 100 times heavier for animal abuse cases. Offenders now face a minimum fine of RM20,000 and possible jail time.

Personal: I’m Back But Only For A short While

Hi All

Firstly, may I just say thank you to those who sent get well wishes etc. I really appreciate your kind words & prayers. 

Well, the prayers worked, it’s been several weeks since I had this first part of spinal surgery & I’m pleased to say it went as well as could be expected, as has my recovery! I’m feeling stronger, which means I am now able to get to my desktop computer; to communicate with you guys!

However, this is only the first of possibly several surgery’s, which obviously means no posts again; whilst in hospital & at home recovering. Yes I have a laptop & iPad, but my wireless internet range is pants, it won’t reach my bedroom; so I can’t post anything until I am able to get to my desktop computer, sorry!

But, for now, until I go back into hospital & pain allowing, I think I could manage a couple of posts a day; but like I said pain allowing, so don’t hold me to that..lol

Once again, thanks to everybody who sent well wishes, I will let you know when I go back into hospital; that way you will know the reason why there are no posts.

R.I.P: In Memoriam: Dr. Mel Richardson

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a dear friend of the animals and of ALDF.  Dr. Mel Richardson, affectionately known as Dr. Mel to his friends and colleagues, passed away on January 2 at the age of 63.

With more than 40 years of veterinary experience, Dr. Mel was a tireless advocate for captive wild animals.

I first met Mel at an elephant summit at the Performing Animal Welfare Society sanctuary about four years ago. I was immediately charmed by his laid-back demeanor, his sense of humour, his discernable kindness, and, of course, his Georgian accent. Dr. Mel quickly became an important part of ALDF’s work on behalf of captive wildlife. He was the expert witness in our lawsuit against the City of Seattle concerning the inhumane captivity of elephants at the Woodland Park Zoo, where Mel was once a zookeeper.

Dr. Mel was the veterinarian in charge of transporting Ben the bear from a tiny, barren concrete cage to a spacious, naturalistic enclosure at the PAWS sanctuary after a lawsuit filed by ALDF and PETA freed Ben from the roadside zoo in North Carolina that held him captive.

Most recently, Mel wrote a comment letter on behalf of ALDF concerning the cruel captivity of two elephants at the Niabi Zoo in Illinois, who were ultimately transferred to better conditions (albeit, at another zoo).

He was also a regular consultant for us on all sorts captive wildlife cases, and the phrase “Let’s call Dr. Mel and ask him” was uttered frequently at our litigation meetings. These are just a few examples of Mel’s work, and he did much more for many other organizations. His primary allegiance was to the animals and he was happy to help anyone at any time.

We will miss Dr. Mel greatly, not only as a colleague and a consultant, but as a friend. He died too soon, but he left a wonderful legacy that will continue to inspire us to fight for freedom for animals.

Video: Schoep Passes Away

“Sorry, I’ve been away for several days due to ongoing health problems! I did posts as & when I could, but could never finish them in their entirety, due to pain!! So many posts are not in the date order they should be, & it’s going to get worse, before it get’s better, hence several posts at once! For new followers, please bear with me, I’m waiting on having a morphine pump fitted, to ease my pain; which should enable me to post daily again…fingers crossed!! So please excuse any mistakes, pain affects my ability to notice errors, due to lack of concentration etc.!!”

“It was with great sadness that I came back, to find out Schoep had passed away; even though I didn’t know them personally, his passing, broke my heart! He was indeed a special dog with my kind of very special owner, prepared to do anything to help ease his best friends pain. I followed his story when I first saw a video of John in the water with Schoep; floating, asleep in Johns arms! I hope John finds peace in the knowledge that Schoep’s legacy can help many more dogs & that Schoep is now at peace; due to Johns special care! R.I.P dear Schoep, you will surely be missed by many. But now you can run, free from pain, through the tall grass, jump fallen trees & swim in crystal clear waters; just over Rainbow Bridge”!

Only a month ago we celebrated Schoep’s twentieth birthday. Sadly on Wednesday Schoep passed away.

Schoep became an internet sensation when a picture of his owner soothing his arthritis in a lake went viral.

Over 187,000 people follow Schoep and John on their Facebook page, captivated by the love the two had for each other.

On Thursday John posted “I Breathe But I Can’t Catch My Breath…Schoep passed yesterday.”

Schoep and John’s story has had a significant impact on many. When the picture and their story went viral donations started pouring in from all over the world.

More than enough money came in to give Schoep the best possible care for his arthritis.

John and Schoep’s veterinarian, Erik Haukass, decided to use the rest of the money to help others. They created Schoep’s Legacy Foundation.

The foundation’s goal is to help low-income families care for their animals. To date the foundation has raised over $25,000.

“It could help another 30 or 40 Schoeps,” said Haukass.

The world is mourning with a man who lost his dog Wednesday.

John Unger and his elderly dog, Schoep, became Internet celebrities last summer because of Bayfield, Wis., photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson’s photograph of the pair in the waters of Lake Superior. Unger took Schoep into the lake regularly to ease the discomfort of the dog’s arthritis.

People from Texas to Japan to Slovakia gave money to help pay Schoep’s veterinary bills, medications and laser treatments.
It gave the faithful companions another year together.
Schoep turned 20 on June 15. He died 26 days later. On Thursday, a photo of a paw print in the sand was posted on the Official Fan Page of Schoep and John on Facebook.

Rescuers Stop Traffic to Save Stray Dog | Life With Dogs.

Rescuers risked their life in heavy traffic last Sunday night to save the life of a stray German shepherd.

Chris Jenkins of Bandade Animal Rescue was one of the people that spotted the German shepherd on a busy toll road in Houston, Texas. Jenkins got some help from a Good Samaritan that stopped to help her corral the dog, stop traffic and bring the dog to safety.

Once is the safety of Jenkins car Jenkins realized that the dog had a badly infected hind leg. Once taken to the veterinarian the leg would have to be amputated due to the severe infection. The dog has been named Mills and is doing well after her surgery. She is estimated to be two-years-old and once she is fully recovered and spayed she will be ready for adoption.

I have a Yorkshire Terrier who had to have both eyes removed within 1 month of each other. We took him to the vets numerous times, saying he just didn’t seem right; as an owner who loves their dog, one knows if & when something is wrong!! However, the vet kept telling us he just had infections, which he was treated for.

Two years ago on Christmas Eve, we knew something was seriously wrong with Harry; so we rushed him to the vet. His retina had detached & the pressure in his eye was so high, he must have felt like his head was about to burst. He went straight into theatre, there was nothing they could do, other than to  remove the eye then & there.

They told us his other eye had glaucoma & may have to come out as the retina could detach in that one also. After a month of seeing him refuse food & just wanting to sit somewhere quiet, we couldn’t bear to see him go through so much pain again, so we told the vets to take his remaining eye out also. We learnt that the pressure in that eye was triple what it should have been, so we made the right move!

Having had both eyes out, Harry is virtually no different. As long as we don’t move furniture around, he knows where he is going & will often run from one room to the other…which amazes me!!  Most people don’t even notice he has no eyes.”

State Troopers Go Out Of Their Way To Find Missing Dog After Tragic Accident

Molly was in a tragic car accident with her owner John Philippi late Thursday night.

Sadly Philippi lost his life in the accident but Molly survived, though initially authorities had no idea she had been in the accident. When state troopers discovered the man’s dog was missing they went above and beyond to find the German shepherd.

Philippi, a 45-year-old Minnesota truck driver, was driving his truck with Molly by his side late Thursday night. Suddenly, his truck tipped on Interstate 94 in Wisconsin and then was hit by another semi. Philippi was ejected from his truck and died.

When State Patrol officers arrived on the scene of the accident they had no idea that Molly had been involved, she was nowhere to be seen. When they contacted Philippi’s family members about the accident one of his nephews asked about Molly.

A notice went out to all law enforcement officers in the area to be on the lookout for Molly. One state trooper even went door-to-door at nearby homes to ask if anyone had seen her.

“We wanted to find that dog,” said State Patrol Lt. Jeff Lorentz. “We didn’t want it hit by another vehicle.”

Friday morning the State Patrol office received a tip, someone had seen a German shepherd near an exit. The area was searched but Molly wasn’t found.  State Patrol officers did not give up though. Later that day, trooper John Vernon started walking the interstate in the area of the crash with some volunteers when he spotted paw prints in the snow near the crash site.

Vernon followed the tracks and found Molly underneath a pine tree trying to stay warm. Vernon called out Molly’s name and the dog walked right to him.

Molly had a 6-inch gash on her leg and she let out a yelp when Vernon touched it.  Molly is now staying with Philippi’s relatives while she recovers from her leg wound. Once Molly is healed the family will decide who she will stay with permanently.

The family is incredibly thankful to the extra efforts of the State Patrol officers, especially Vernon.  Even the State Patrol office recognizes the extra effort Vernon, who has an affinity for dogs, put into the search.

“I don’t think anybody showed more determination than trooper John Vernon,” said Lorentz.

Personal: Just A Quick Note About Future Posts

Hi folks

“Me, again, sorry, but I just had a brainwave; or in my case, more of a ripple…lol”

“As you know, due to my present circumstances (if you read the last personal post) my time online is precious, due to increasing pain! This is because the strength of oral morphine I take, is decreasing weekly; to prepare my body for an operation to have a morphine pump fitted (Which better bloody work after all this!!!) Obviously the extra pain, is stopping me from being able to get to my main PC, to post stories!”

“I am more than aware of how far behind I am, with recent news articles & stories; many are backed up on my pc just waiting for me to post! All of which makes me very frustrated. But I think there is a way I could post a little more; that is if I stop editing stories like I do!!!”

“Yes, I am guilty of wanting to make posts look more interesting & appealing on the eye. I like highlighting the best bits, as some people don’t want to, or don’t have time to read the full article; I often skim over stories when I don’t have time to read the full post. But I also like to use colours to highlight names, I use pictures & image galleries. I like researching more about the stories; so I can include any relevant petitions etc.

“I see nothing wrong with how I edit the stories, however doing so, is very time-consuming, something I just don’t have right now!”

“So, I think whilst my time online is limited…I could get more done, if I just post stories “as is”, just how they are printed in their online news format, without me giving them a makeover; so to speak! Plus I will just use the basic categories too (I know, my posts contain a lot of categories…lol) I just like stories to be found easily, that’s all!”

“I’m sure by posting stories & articles without adding my extra touches…it will enable me to post a little more! Once again, my sincere apologies for the lack of news items, with some being past their due date; I can only go as fast as my body is able!! Hopefully once the surgery is done, I will have all the time in the world to edit, & do makeovers on as many stories as I like!!”

P.S. Many many thanks to all those who sent birthday wishes! I was & still am, quite touched by the kindness & thoughtfulness; of people whom I only know through a keyboard!

Plus, with a lot of sheer determination, encouragement & help from family & friends…after 6 months confined at home due to pain…I finally managed the journey to the livery yard & got to see my horses; which, of course, was the best present ever! I can’t thank those involved enough; aside from saying “I love you guys”!
