” I received this via email & wanted to share. This is horrific, why are these Countries being allowed to kill these animals in this way?? I can’t give a lot but £1 is better than nothing & a lot of £1 will add up & hopefully get this advert on the TV; to stop this heinous illegal type of slaughtering!                 Change his fate. Help expose live export sledgehammering on tv.

Sold. Exported & SLEDGE-HAMMERED TO DEATH

It’s been 6 days since we exposed the brutal reality of live export to Vietnam: terrified animals having their skulls smashed with sledgehammers.

Still, the trade continues.

That means young calves like him will grow up to risk the very same horror: sledgehammered to death in a filthy slaughterhouse. The ‘lucky ones’ die quickly. The unlucky ones feel everything — blow after agonising blow.

(VERY GRAPHIC… VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED; AT THE END OF THIS PAGE  – Watch a video TAKEN ON-BOARD AN EXPORT SHIP BY A VET, after it was uploaded she lost her job!!!!).

These animals’ harrowing stories are sending shockwaves around the world. Our investigation made headlines in 34 countries. Our Prime Minister expressed his ‘shock’ and ‘disgust’. But it wasn’t followed by any meaningful action.

10 days out from an election and the last thing political leaders want is for their complicity in animal abuse to be thrown into the spotlight. With your help, that’s exactly what we’re about to do.

We urgently need to send a message to decision-makers that their promises and platitudes aren’t good enough. That for every animal who suffers for this industry, for every day a terrified steer is at risk of brutal sledgehammering — we will keep fighting for them.

Please help us disrupt the election campaign with an emergency broadcast for animals.

We have just 48 hours to secure pre-election air time. Can you help us reach our goal? We don’t just have our sights set on TV — with your help we will target politicians when they read their news online, too.

For too long the odds have been stacked against animals, but right now we have a rare opportunity to hit the live export industry where it hurts. Help us seize it.

Even a small donation today can make a difference.

In whatever way you choose to help animals, thank you.

It’s not the first time Animals Australia investigators have exposed the horrific practice of sledgehammering animals to death in the live export trade. After 12 months, terrified animals are still having their skulls smashed on a nightly basis. Nothing Barnaby Joyce (the Agriculture Minister) has done to date will stop this horror continuing.

Australia’s Federal Agriculture Minister, Barnaby Joyce, has known for YEARS about sledgehammering in Vietnam. In that time, his Department has green-lit shiploads of animals to the region. In light of Animals Australia’s recent investigation exposing brutal sledgehammering yet again in Vietnam, he still refuses to suspend trade — putting more animals at risk of horrific cruelty. THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION IS FAILING EUROPEAN ANIMALS

Comments Off on THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION IS FAILING EUROPEAN ANIMALS

When meat is imported into the European Union the law stipulates that the animal must have been slaughtered in line with EU legislation.

However, when EU animals are exported, the same rules are not afforded to them and instead they can face brutal treatment and long drawn out slaughter.

Every year three million European animals are sent on long, stressful journeys to be fattened or slaughtered outside the EU. A vast number of these go to the Middle East where Compassion’s recent investigation, in partnership with Animals Australia, has uncovered immeasurable suffering.

Please take a moment to watch the film and slideshow below to find out more about this deplorable trade. Be warned; some of the film is distressing to watch, but it’s essential concerned citizens find out where European animals are ending their journeys.

Take action against the EU’s cruel live animal export trade

Please take a moment to watch and share our investigation. Warning: Due to its upsetting nature, you may need to verify that you are over 18 to watch the film.

When European farm animals are exported to non-EU countries every shred of protection they once received in their place of birth is rendered meaningless.

After enduring long, exhausting journeys by land and sea they may face terrifying ordeals at slaughter.

Animals are dragged by their limbs, bound up with ropes, pinned down by groups of men, beaten with metal rods, suspended upside down for extended periods of time, and eventually slaughtered in unacceptable ways that leave them conscious for many minutes after having their throats cut.

The European Commission has the power to take steps to stop this, but as each day passes without action more and more animals continue to suffer.

  • The European Commission must work towards ending the live export trade and if necessary replacing it with a trade in meat.
  • While a trade in exporting live animals continues, the European Commission must implement a scheme that will guarantee exported animals are treated in ways that prevent the worst of the suffering.
  • The European Commission must provide practical support to countries that import live animals from the EU in order that they can improve transport, handling and slaughter methods. This will not only improve the welfare of EU animals but also of any other animals slaughtered in those countries.

Please take action today. Email the Commission and call for an end to this suffering.

Graphic Videos: Yet More Egypt Cruelty Footage Emerges

Comments Off on Graphic Videos: Yet More Egypt Cruelty Footage Emerges

“OMG…This has got to be at the top of the pile when it comes to cruelty in abattoirs,  This is torture for animals in a living hell; at its worst. I can’t believe this is still being allowed to happen. The only way we can help to stop this is by sharing, making the public aware of the atrocities going on. We must get people signing the Animals Australia Ban on Live Export petition! Help the Australian people understand what is happening & that some in their government are happy for it to continue.

“Voting happens in September, people need to know the truth, the full horror of the export trade; before they cast they vote. We have to rise up, voice our disgust & demand better welfare for these animals; if we don’t who will? This Torture can not be allowed to carry on..PERIOD!! So please share, cross-post etc. If you get an error message when clicking on my link, don’t worry, it’s not spam, it is an error, Facebook have been informed of it! “

“I’m describing the video so that you really are aware of what you’re about to see, should you choose to press play. The first video is horrific, the steers are put in a machine that turns them upside down, then their throats are slit. As they tumble out of the contraption, they stand, their sliced throats flap around as they look for escape! But the second video is the worst. Jacob, a lone steer is repeatedly stabbed with a knife into his eyes, his tendons are slashed repeatedly until he goes down…then his final minutes of torture end with his throat once again being repeatedly slashed. How the fuck is this possible; do their lives really mean so little, that their owners & governments are prepared to stand by; & do nothing??

Further shocking evidence has surfaced of Australian cattle being abused in an Egyptian abattoir.

The footage reveals conscious animals walking around with gaping throat cuts in an Egyptian abattoir that has been hailed by industry as ‘state-of-the-art’.

Once more, this reinforces the cruel nature of un-stunned slaughter. Yet inconceivably, Labor, the Coalition and the live export industry have all rejected calls for mandatory stunning of animals in the live trade.

Just over a week ago, evidence provided by Animals Australia of cruelty to Australian cattle in Egypt sparked a government investigation. This latest evidence was brought to Animals Australia’s attention this week and immediately provided to the Department of Agriculture.

Once again, the industry’s mantra of needing to stay in a market to improve welfare has been exposed for what it is: PR spin designed to maintain producer and government support.

Sadly, farmers have again been deceived by the very industry bodies that purport to represent them. They are being told that their animals are well cared for overseas, only to consistently find out otherwise.

The sky won’t fall in if live export ends. Most Australian farmers don’t live export and those who do can be assisted to transition away from the trade — a move that would be better for them and better for animals.

Shocking live export cruelty in Egypt – Sokhna Viewer Discretion Advised

Published on 6 May 2013

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.BanLiveExport.com/egypt

Animals Australia’s latest live export investigation revealed terrified animals making desperate efforts to escape after having their throats cut open; others with eyes stabbed; leg tendons slashed; and being butchered while still alive… This is the nightmare endured by animals who were exported live from Australia to Egypt.

Shocking live export cruelty in Egypt – Ismailia Viewer Discretion Strongly Advised

Published on 6 May 2013

Shocking cruelty captured in Egypt’s Ismailia abattoir shows an injured Australian steer stabbed in the eyes, and disabled by having his leg tendons slashed.

HELP END THIS CRUELTY:http://www.BanLiveExport.com/egypt

“The following are “excerpts” from an article in the Tasmanian Times. Please read & do what is necessary to get this torture stopped.”

Iin the House of Representatives, Independent Member for Denison Andrew Wilkie courageously stood up in Parliament with this picture of ‘Jacob’ and demanded some answers from Prime Minister Gillard, who could only reiterate that the government’s system is ‘working’. Andrew’s questioning of the government can be seen here, as well as the totally predictable and fatuous response of the Prime Minister claiming that this evil, disgraceful trade in wretched animal misery and suffering has a ‘social licence’.

The Steer is named Jacob; he is the victim in the second video above

Some things are so obscene, and so depraved, that nothing can ever justify them, and the live animal export trade is absolutely one of those things.

Be careful what you wish for when you cast your vote at the September Federal election. A vote for the coalition will see even more support for the gross animal abuse seen throughout Animals Australia’s 19 investigations. Tony Abbott says ‘one of his first jobs will be to apologise to the Indonesians for the ‘catastrophic’ ban on the cattle trade’ there following the exposure of similar torture of our cattle shown on the ‘Four Corners’ program’A Bloody Business’  in May 2011. In this, the Gillard government and the Abbott coalition are as one.

Will Abbott and his sycophants also want to apologise to Egypt? Bahrain? Kuwait? Pakistan? Malaysia? And all the other countries to which Australia happily sends millions of innocent, gentle animals to be so heinously abused? Tony Abbott wants to make the all-but-meaningless ESCAS ‘more exporter friendly’, if that is indeed possible.

Jacob, the Australian bull filmed at an Egyptian slaughterhouse last month, spent his last horrific many minutes of life having his eyes stabbed and his leg tendons slashed. He had been forced into an appallingly cruel slaughter box, from which, in panic, he escaped, trying to run on three legs because one was already broken. His throat had been slashed and he ran with his head almost hanging off. Jacob was a gentle, Western Australian Brahman bull, who had done nothing wrong. He spent weeks on a Third World live export ship on his way to Egypt before facing this ultimate horror and depravity.

The evidence of the abuse first came from a courageous Egyptian veterinarian, Dr Abdelwahab, a man with seven years experience in Egyptian abattoirs. He expressed to Animals Australia that animal cruelty in Egypt is rife and that neither abattoir management nor on-site veterinarians intervene to stop cruel treatment. He said ‘this action happened yesterday, today, and it will happen tomorrow’. He described the facilities, claimed to be ‘state of the art’ by the Australian government and exporters, detailing the slaughterbox used there which turns the terrified animals upside down, often crushing their ribs and pelvises in the process.

So please demand that your current Federal MPs and Senators do whatever it takes to bring down this trade. But also take it up with coalition candidates as well, because their agenda is to EXPAND this morally bankrupt industry. Don’t be fooled by the argument that if Australia withdraws from the trade the animal abuse will be even worse, because if millions of Australian animals are nor put on the rotten old ships, that is millions of animals saved – and that many less animals subjected to this horriific and systemic torture. No other countries can supply the volume of animals Australia does.

Don’t buy the argument that the ‘cattle in the north are starving;’ either. If these people have bred thousands of animals for this trade which is going nowhere if the Australian people are heard by their government, then they are obligated to feed and care for them. If they don’t, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as anyone else would be. Their failure to respond to market forces is their fault and no-one else’s, and there is no more subsidised and privileged sector in the community than the ever-complaining farmers.

Most importantly, make your vote count.Suzanne Cass. http://www.liveexportshame.comhttp://www.stoptac.org Stop Tasmanian Animal Cruelty PO Box 252 BRIDGEWATER TAS 7030http://www.stoptac.org http://www.liveexportshame.comWatch The Debate: Andrew Wilkie Questions The Prime Minister On Live Export

Toodyay Hunter Could Face Prison: RSPCA Ask Public For Help

Comments Off on Toodyay Hunter Could Face Prison: RSPCA Ask Public For Help

A CRUEL and callous hunter who shot a kangaroo with a high-powered bow near Toodyay could serve up to a year in prison.

The RSPCA condemned the act of animal cruelty – the third major incident in the past two weeks.

Despite attempts to save it, the kangaroo had to be put down.

The RSPCA is calling for the public’s help to catch the person responsible for the kangaroo attack.

Spokesman Tim Mayne said the crime was punishable by hefty penalties.

Any person convicted of animal cruelty could face a fine of up to $50,000 or five years’ jail, he said.

“The message is that if you inflict injuries or any form of cruelty on defenceless animals and we catch you, then we will enforce the full extent of the law and you will be punished,” he said.

The kangaroo’s death was the third major cruelty incident in as many weeks.

A horse was wounded with a shotgun on April 24 at Anketell, south of Perth, and a dog was shot with an arrow in Kununurra, in the Far North, last Friday.

Veterinarians removed 23 pellets from the horse’s body – from its head through to its rib cage.

It is still undergoing treatment and there are concerns it may lose its right eye.

Police are investigating both incidents.

“The fact that RSPCA has had three reports of three separate animals shot with weapons is appalling,” RSPCA CEO David van Ooran said.

He said under the Animal Welfare Act 2002, penalties of up to a $50,000 fine and five year’ imprisonment apply.

The unlawful killing of native animals is also an offence under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950, which carries a penalty of $4,000 for protected fauna and up to $10,000 in the case of rare or specially protected species. In addition to these provisions, separate charges can be laid by police.

Anyone witnessing animal cruelty can call the RSPCA hotline on 1300 278 3589.

Sheep & Cattle Still Suffer As Live Export Breaches Continue In Kuwait

Comments Off on Sheep & Cattle Still Suffer As Live Export Breaches Continue In Kuwait

An Animals Australia investigation has again found Australian sheep being illegally sold in a cruel livestock market in Kuwait, despite Animals Australia first notifying Australian authorities of breaches at this market some five months ago.

Under the new live export rules, exporters must ensure that animals remain within approved supply chains. New evidence from Animals Australia has revealed that months after our initial complaint, Australian sheep have continued to be sold and brutally slaughtered at the notorious Al Rai livestock market, in Kuwait. Animals at this marketplace are known to have their legs bound together, be stuffed into car bootsdragged over concrete slabs, and have their throats cut while fully conscious.

This footage taken in August 2012 sparked Animals Australia’s original complaint to the Department of Agriculture.

Warning Very Graphic Video

In January 2013, an investigator returned to the Al Rai market and found even more Australian sheep being offered for sale by at least 11 separate merchants.

Many admitted knowing that they shouldn’t have Australian sheep and ear tags had been ripped out or removed despite the fact that Australian sheep are clearly distinguishable from local sheep in the region. All of the merchants at the market offered slaughter onsite as an ‘after sales’ service.

The Al Rai market in Kuwait City is notorious for cruelty. Animals Australia has conducted a number of investigations there, each time documenting the brutal handling, transport and slaughter of Australian sheep. Preventing Australian sheep from being sold in such circumstances was a cornerstone of why the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System was implemented. Yet nearly one year after ESCAS came into effect in Kuwait, rules continue to be breached and animals continue to suffer.

Al Rai market was already the obvious place in the Middle East for exporters to monitor – the fact they have not done so, even after breaches were discovered, shows how little they care and their willingness to thumb their nose at government regulations. If exporters are not prepared to follow the rules they should have their export licence removed.

Please send an urgent message to your Federal MP to express your opposition to this cruel trade and demand that, while it continues, tough sanctions must be placed on exporters who fail to adhere to the rules.

Live export cruelty continues

Sadly Australia is one of the biggest exporters of live animals for slaughter. In 2011 Australia exported around 700,000  cattle predominantly to Indonesia, and around 2.5 million sheep mainly to  the Middle East.

WSPA Australia works actively on this issue of live exports, and the campaign is called ‘Humane Chain’.

During the journey animals can experience stress, heat exhaustion and extreme temperatures. Many don’t eat, are injured or suffer from disease. Despite efforts made by both the Australian Government and the live export industry to regulate the export process, tens of thousands of animals continue to die every year while being exported.

Almost half of all deaths on board sheep vessels are due to starvation because some sheep are not able to identify the unfamiliar pellets they’re given as food.

For every animal that dies, many more suffer further cruelty

Moving to the alternatives to live animal export will not only help animals, it’s also better for our economy

There are alternatives to live animal export that will benefit farmers, jobs, our economy and the animals.

According to an independent assessment (S G Heilbron, 2000) live animal export costs Australia $1.5 billion in lost GDP, $270 million in lost household income and around 10,500 lost jobs.

WSPA funded researched in 2012 that shows that northern cattle farmers could increase their income by 245% if they had access to an abattoir. It would also add $200 million to the regional economy each year and create 1300 jobs. Read the research here.

WSPA funded research in 2010 that shows a sheep processed in Australia is worth 20% more to the economy that one exported live. Read the research here.

WSPA Live Sheep Exports It’s Just so Cruel

This video shows evidence collected during WSPA’s recent investigation into the mistreatment of Australian sheep. Investigators have documented cruelty throughout the live export supply chain, from transportation on ships, through to holding yards and abattoirs in the Middle East. You can take action to help end this cruel trade by visiting http://www.humanechain.org

Petition for any Country:http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/841/664/709/

You can watch a short video that explains the benefits of moving away from live exports and the next steps we should take here.

Halal certified chilled meat products from Australia are accepted both in the Middle East and in Indonesia. There’s no excuse to continue the live animal export trade.

Australians want an end to live animal export

Three quarters (74%), or 12.4 million, of Australians claim that they are more likely to vote for a political candidate who promises to end live animal export, according to a Longeran Poll from May 2012.

Those animals that survive the journey arrive on foreign soil where they are no longer under Australian protection. Few  countries to which Australia sends animals for slaughter have equivalent animal welfare protection laws. Many animals will be slaughtered fully conscious.

Horrific Cruelty Towards Babies: The Unwanted Male Dairy Calves

Comments Off on Horrific Cruelty Towards Babies: The Unwanted Male Dairy Calves

“This is an update on a post I did several months ago; however this contains more information. So please read the information at the links, sign the petitions & watch a new video recorded February 2013 by Animals Australia!!”

“Don’t you find it appalling that we force animals into pregnancy, then steal their babies & if that wasn’t bad enough, we then steal their babies milk! FFS people…please…I know I’ve written a lot; but only because I feel so strongly on the this subject. These animals have very little rights, or protection from harm…yes there are rules in place…but there all just about broken; as we have seen so many times before on undercover videos. Ok, these are just animals to some, but that doesn’t, nor shouldn’t put them beneath us, nor give us the right to treat them in such appalling ways, should it??

These young, vulnerable animals suffered not only because of illegal cruelty — but, crucially, because they were not wanted by the commercial dairy industryHundreds of thousands of Australian bobby calves are slaughtered each year as waste products of the dairy industry. The terrible treatment at this abattoir is not the first, nor will it be the last time that calves will be thrown, dragged and abused.

Their inability as babies to comprehend what is required of them, whether during loading for transport or up the races of slaughterhouses, requires them to be treated with compassion and patiencetwo human traits rarely witnessed when it comes to dealing with unwanted and ‘worthless’ animals.

Hidden Cameras – The Unwanted Dairy calf Investigation – Does not show slaughter!

(What you probably knew, but didn’t want to see; is a better title)

Published on 1 Feb 2013

Using hidden cameras, this investigation into the fate of unwanted dairy calves (bobby calves) in Australia reveals what the dairy industry doesn’t want you to see. LIKE & SHARE this video to help expose this. For tips on going dairy-free visit http://AnimalsAustralia.org/dairy-inv…

Young calves pushed, shocked with electric prods, hit and dragged up a metal ramp to be slaughtered… Some, too weak to stand, are thrown into the slaughter chute.

This shocking footage, provided to Animals Australia, was taken at an abattoir in Northern Victoria.

Upon receiving the footage, Animals Australia lodged a formal complaint with the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) for breaches of Victorian animal cruelty laws and the illegal use of an electric prod on a calf. A formal complaint was also lodged with PrimeSafe for breaches of the Australian Standards governing welfare at abattoirs; PrimeSafe ordered the practices cease immediately. Investigations have now concluded — incredibly, no charges have been laid.

Instead, the abattoir owners and several workers were issued with formal warnings by DPI. “Formal warnings for beating, shocking & brutally abusing babies…does that seem right or fair? Those heartless bastards should have been EXPOSED to all & at the very least; then BEEN FINED & DISMISSED!”

This exposure of abattoir cruelty, the latest in a string over the past 15 months, further demonstrates the urgent need for constant monitoring by Government veterinary officers and CCTV in all abattoirs.

“OK…this is my rant! Don’t we kill enough animals? slaughtered in appalling ways, just to satisfy the human hunger for all things meat?? Please…these are babies, yet they are thrown around, stunned, hit, poked, prodded etc. from the day they are born. This is 2013; we don’t need to be eating baby calves to maintain a healthy diet, any more than we need to be stealing their milk…it’s all just a preference!”

“For the cow’s, nature normally decides the sex of an animal, but there is such a thing as specific “sexed semen” in the farming industry. It’s mainly only used on heifers for their first born, after that, it isn’t so predictable. So “sexed semen” isn’t widely used. A dairy cow is impregnated every year, so she continues to produce a steady supply of milk for humans to drink. This is usually done through artificial insemination which will give a 50/50 chance as to the sex of the calf. Most cows in the regular dairy industry are also given growth hormones, causing their udders to become unnaturally big and heavy, resulting in frequent infections. The Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH) also increases birth defects in calves.

Female cows have the same gestation period as women, 9 months! When the calf is born, it is normal dairy practice to remove the calf. Generally, the female calves are reared to join the milking herd but for male calves, it’s a very different story! The average modern dairy cow will produce about 100 pounds of milk per day, which is 10 times more than it would naturally produce. Normally cows can live an average of 25 years. Dairy cows are slaughtered and made into ground beef after about 3-4 years.

For the poor males calves born, a small percentage can either be reared for beef, if suitable, or sold for veal. After being removed from their mothers, veal calves are loaded onto trucks and often sold at auctions. These small and fragile calves are often treated very roughly. If they are unable to walk, they will be dragged by their legs or ears (as seen in the video)

For the places that still use veal crates, the calves are confined in crates measuring about two feet wide. To make their meat more “tender”, their movements are restrained by chains around their necks. To give a white colour to their meat, the calves are fed an all-liquid milk-substitute, purposely deficient in iron and fibre  After about 16 weeks, these poor calves are slaughtered and their meat is sold labelled as “white” veal. They don’t even get to taste their mothers milk, let alone be with their mothers!”

“Bob” veal comes from calves who are slaughtered when they are only a few hours or days old! SORRY….that just isn’t right…in fact, it makes us no better than our earlier neanderthal man, who would eat any meat, just to stay alive! WTF are we doing, eating baby calves…isn’t the meat from a cow good enough???

There is no getting away from the fact that humans developed this heinous life for young calves, purely so that their meat would taste nice to a certain clientele ! How f-ing wrong is that??? Doing so makes us no better than the people in Asia that eat puppies, dogs or cats! How many of you have signed numerous petitions to put an end to the cruel torture & eating of puppies, dogs or cats?? Some regions of china, beat the animal before it is slaughtered, because those eating it believe it makes the meat taste better.! Well what the hell are we doing??? putting babies into small crates to restrict their growth; so their meat tastes nicer!!! We are no f-ing better then them, we cause baby calves pain by putting them into crates with chains around their necks, not letting them move, feeding them poor diets etc. TELL ME…WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE???”

“Sadly, I’m more than aware, that where no other viable options exist, some farmers have no choice but to cull their bull calves, i.e. shoot them shortly after birth!! Perhaps this is the better end, than being dragged from their mothers, forced into trailers, degraded at sale rings…starved in veal crates, then violently tossed onto a slaughter belt & probably concious whilst their throats are cut!

“Female cows are in the dairy business for one reason only, for humans to steal their milk! Milk they produce because they are continually kept pregnant, because being pregnant means their body gets ready to produce milk for their babies, just like women; which is why female cow’s have their babies then are made pregnant again!  Artificial insemination especially in intensive dairy farming, cows are genetically engineered and fed growth hormones to force them to produce more milk.”

All female animals produce milk just like humans do, for their babies…unless your born a male calf…males don’t don’t get to have their mothers milk or be nurtured & feel safe; because they were sadly born MALE & not wanted by the commercial dairy industry.

“YOU CAN HELP BY SIMPLY NOT EATING VEAL or drinking their milk…Wouldn’t you feel a lot happier knowing you were not contributing to this?? I don’t eat any meat & only have Soya as my dairy substitute; even if I wasn’t vegetarian I still couldn’t stomach the thought of eating any baby animal;especially after seeing how they are treated!

“These babies, including, pigs, cows, chickens, lambs, foals & often other animals around the world, are seen in the farming industry as cattle, livestock or property…therefore allowed to be killed & abused dreadfully, as is being seen! Why are we letting this happen??

What You Never Knew About Dairy

Uploaded on 24 Jan 2011

The treatment of bobby calves has been a long-held secret of the dairy industry. For the sake of milk products, the Australian dairy industry discards some 700,000 unwanted week-old calves as ‘waste products’ every year. You can help these vulnerable animals at http://www.animalsaustralia.org

“Of course there are those that don’t want the public to see how animals are treated or slaughtered on farms etc. So they are trying to introduce Ag-Gag bills…WHY?? If a farm has nothing to hide; why be so paranoid? We need these people to go into places the public are not allowed, so they can document all stages of cattle processing etc. Personally I think all places were animals are reared or slaughtered should have CCTV made available to 3rd parties at any time. For workers who, for want of a better word “enjoy causing & inflicting pain on another living being” farms & slaughter houses are perfect for them to carry on their diabolical & heinous rituals of hurting animals! Without undercover films or CCTV…how the hell are we going to know how the animals are kept & handled??”

Dangerous bills in five states would criminalize whistle-blowing on factory farms, chilling the ability of the American public to confront animal cruelty, unsafe working conditions, and environmental problems. See if your state has such a bill pending. Then learn more about these troublesome pieces of legislation in the link below.

In 2013, these states have introduced anti-whistle-blower bills:

If You Have To Eat Veal – Please Buy British veal

By rearing these calves for British veal, we believe they are given a life worth living. The calves are reared in groups and must be provided with bedding which gives them a comfortable floor surface. Young calves are supplied double the amount of fibrous food compared with EU requirements, and older calves have greater space allowance than stipulated in EU law.

And, last but not least, these calves have not endured long distance transport to reach the rearing units.

And finally, if it doesn’t specify on the menu that the veal is British, assume that it isn’t  Retailers, restaurants, butchers and deli’s should be proud to offer this higher welfare alternative.

Maternal Deprivation – A HSUS guide to the welfare of veal animals

The routine early separation of cows and their calves in the dairy and veal industries is distressing for both.

Hudson and Mullord foundthat 5-min contact with a calf immediately post partum is sufficient for the formation of a strong, specific maternal bond with that calf.

Calves separated from their dams at birth, as observed by Lidfors, were less active and vocalized and licked themselves more than calves remaining with their mothers. Marchant-Forde et al. reported that calves separated from their dams 24 hours after birth recognized and responded to recordings of their dams’ calls 24 hours after separation, with the cows’ vocalizations eliciting cardiac and behavioural responses in their calves.

In its 1995 Report on the Welfare of Calves, the SVC concluded: “The best conditions for rearing young calves involve leaving the calf with the mother in a circumstance where the calf can suckle and can subsequently graze and interact with other calves.” Newborn calves have no antibodies against infections and are entirely dependent on immunoglobulin in mother’s milk for immunological protection.

Colostrum, the milk dams produce during the first few days after calving, is especially high in immunoglobulinAdequate intake of colostrum is critical for the future health of the calf, as those with low concentrations of absorbed immunoglobulin are more susceptible to diarrhoea.

The routine practice of removing newborn calves from their dams within a few hours of birth may jeopardize this important transfer of immunoglobulin.  Although colostrum is collected from recently calved cows, in top dairy-producing states such as California, it is often sold to facilities specializing in raising female calves for the dairy industry,as their long-term health is considered to be of greater value than that of male calves reared for veal.

Surveys of U.S. veal farms confirm that many calves do not receive adequate colostrum.

What about veal crates?

“Confining calves to crates prevents them from performing all of their natural social and psychological behaviours, purposely prevents healthy growth and development. At the end of their short lives, many calves are not able to walk properly to slaughter, due to the under-development of their leg muscles.

“Humans do this on purpose so that their meat tastes better…FFS….this makes us no better than the people in parts of China, that beat dogs to death; under the impression it makes their meat taste better!! Well, we might not intentionally beat the animal to “make it taste better” but we keep it confined in crate so it doesn’t grown normally!! Not that much difference is there??”

“Crated calves are fed a poor substitute as opposed to their mothers milk; which actually causes them to become anaemic, which creates the very pale meat; the seller wants & the buyers need…it disgusting!”

While some animal advocates work to ban the use of veal crates, the slaughter of any animal for food is antithetical to animal rights, regardless of how much room the animals have when they are alive.

Veal crates have been banned in the UK since 1990, however veal is still produced in the UK under certain requirements, for example, calves must be able to turn around, they must be fed a diet containing some iron and they may not be kept in individual stalls or pens after the age of eight weeks. As of 2006, similar requirements will be law in the European Union; at present they are only applicable for holdings that have been newly built or rebuilt as of January of 1998.

Here’s a quick look at some of the HSUS’s work to free calves from crates.

State Laws

The HSUS has helped pass laws to ban veal crates in several states, including Arizona,CaliforniaColoradoMaineMichigan, and Ohio.

Investigations

Our undercover investigation of a “bob veal” slaughter plant shined a bright light onto the abuses that male dairy calves can endure.

Corporations

After working with The HSUS, retailers such as Wolfgang Puck no longer serve veal from calves confined in crates. Strauss Veal, the largest U.S. veal producer, and Marcho Farms, have both converted their veal operations to crate-free housing.

Individuals

The HSUS offers materials that make it easier for consumers to avoid supporting veal cratesand that’s one of the ways you can help! Some include our guide to meat and dairy labels, our list of dairy-free and delicious products, and dozens of delicious, humane recipes.

A brief guide to labels and animal welfare

The Humane Society of the United States

An abundance of labels on meat and dairy products make such claims as “grass fed,” “cage free” and “natural.” What exactly do these labels mean, especially in terms of animal welfare?

Some of the claims represent better conditions for animals than those suffered by the billions who are raised on standard factory farms, while others don’t relate to the animals’ welfare at all. So, how meaningful are these labels?

The following are the most common labels, decoded:-take a look so you know what your buying:- http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/confinement_farm/facts/meat_dairy_labels.html

“Eastleigh Farm says goodbye to Framingham herd matriarch”

FRAMINGHAM

As dairy owner Doug Stephan’s first milk cow, Peaches was Eastleigh Farm’s grande dame. With a beautifully coiffed top-knot crown and way of communicating with farmhands, the brown Jersey girl commanded respect.

“She’s always been extraordinarily regal,” farm worker Georgette Jowdy said.

As the 22-year-old bovine laid her tired legs on a bed of hay Friday morning, her large brown eyes showed that she seemed to know her reign as matriarch was over.

Stephan planned to put Peaches down Friday afternoon, 10 years after retiring her to his home pasture on Grove Street, around the corner from Eastleigh on Edmands Road.

Stephan choked back tears as he sat beside his beloved cow in the barn beside his house, talking about her seemingly psychic abilities, the seven calves she delivered and how she got her name from the vocalist duo Peaches & Herb.

He planned to bury Peaches near his late father’s ashes in the yard, and near a plaque for farm manager Edgar Pless, who died last summer.

“It’s a tough day,” said Jowdy, Pless’ wife, who raises the farm’s calves and had a close bond with Peaches after working there for 14 years. “It’s especially tough for Doug.”

As Peaches put her head on his lap, Stephan recalled bringing the cow and her cousin, Cream, to live at Eastleigh when they were four- or five-day-old heifers.

Cream later died, and the “extraordinarily sharp” Peaches went on to rule the herd. “She was always the boss cow,” Stephan said. “She would show up, get unloaded off the trailer and everyone would clear the way. She was in charge,” Jowdy said.

“She has an aura about her,” Stephan said. “I mean there’s a little crown.” Eastleigh retires its cows instead of slaughtering them after their milking years. It lets them graze in the home pasture, or gives them away to be “lawnmowers,” Jowdy said.

They give their whole life to give us food,” she said. Strong-willed Peaches lived a long life for a cow and couldn’t stand up at the end, Jowdy said. “They get arthritis, like we do,” she said. “They get bone loss, they get muscle loss.” Peaches, she said, “gave milk for a long, long time and babies – a lot of babies.”

A lineage chart in the barn shows that Peaches delivered Patches, Elsie, Beth, Herbie, Plum, Samantha and Beulah. Apricot, Emma and Elke joined the family tree as future generations. They are among the hundreds of cows that Stephan raises.

Resting in her stall before the veterinarian arrived, Peaches enjoyed lots of snacks in addition to her grain: whole wheat bread, croissant and, a special treat, doughnuts.

“We’re indulging her a lot,” Jowdy said. Jowdy said she was comforted by the fact that Peaches would be joining her late husband. “I like to believe because it’s comforting that he’s there waiting for her,” she said.

“Why can’t all farmers have the compassion & love for their animals as the above man does?  I really take my hat off to this farmer for his loyalty & love of his animals. He appreciates that they give their milk & their babies; in return they get to be cow’s, retired & munching on grass!”

Reston Zoo: Director Pleads Guilty to Animal Cruelty After Drowning Wallaby

Comments Off on Reston Zoo: Director Pleads Guilty to Animal Cruelty After Drowning Wallaby

The former director of the Reston Zoo has pleaded guiltyto one charge of animal cruelty after she drowned an injured wallaby early last year, the Post reports:

Meghan Mogensen, 27, of Silver Spring, was sentenced to one month in jail and is barred from making decisions about the care or euthanasia of any animal if she serves as an animal caretaker or manager of a zoo or sanctuary. “WTF…she drowned a living creature, this sentence is pathetic, at the very least she should have been banned from being around animals for a minimum of 10 years. I wonder if someone else had done it; would they receive the same sentence?? Don’t forget her daddy owns the park’ perhaps they thought her father shouldn’t have had to deal with the stress of sacking his precious daughter!”

Under the terms of the deal, a second charge for possession of an animal euthanasia drug without a license was dropped. “One month in jail for an animal she killed… I just don’t get all these deals etc. Were talking about animal killers or abusers, some heinous sadistic killers, yet they seem able to get deals, why??? They get more deals on their prison terms & conditions, than decent animal lovers, get on their pet insurance…it’s crazy & a slap in the face at animal advocates!”

Mogensen had already been found guilty a court last year, but she appealed those verdicts. Last Friday she apparently changed her mind and opted to plead guilty. “So she is allowed to swap her mind as & when it suits? Then just decided that, actually she did kill the Koala by drowning it…makes me bloody furious. All this swapping  around should be considered into the trial, for wasting’s every ones time & money etc.!!”

Mogensen drowned the wallaby after it had been injured in its cage. While she originally claimed that she had euthanized it by injecting it with drugs, tipsters at the zoo told investigators that they suspected that she had drowned it in a five-gallon bucket instead.

At her trial last September, a former curator at the zoo testified that other animals had been killed in similarly brutal ways: in one case, chickens were fed to pythons. A year prior a researcher at the National Zoo was found guilty of trying to poison stray cats.

Mogensen’s father owns the 30-acre zoo, which is closed for the winter but is scheduled to reopen in March.

This is Nature‘s Child. She was a track winner, winning tens of thousands of dollars for her owners.

Investigators from the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) found where she had ended up – alone and unwanted at a knackery just 20 minutes away from Flemington, Australia‘s most famous racetrack.

Her final moments are both shocking and heartbreaking.

WARNING:Viewer discretion advised; this clip is not easy to watch.

The story of Nature’s Child – hidden horror at Laverton Knackery from Animals Australia on Vimeo.

Nature’s Child is shot in the head in front of her equine companion who had fearfully rushed into the ‘killing box’ behind his friend. While still alive, she is dragged by a tractor to the slaughter-room floor, and has her throat slit and tail cut off. In a nearby paddock a stallion is also shot in the head. Still alive, he is dragged by tractor 60 metres across gravel and concrete to the slaughter-room where he is shot again.

It is not just the killing methods that should force the closure of this knackery in VictoriaOther serious problems investigators observed included: horses being beaten; being transported while injured; sick and injured horses being left untreated; and the body of one dead horse left lying in the holding yard while others stood around him.

It is clear that these men cannot be trusted to handle animals. Show you care for horses by urging authorities to shut this place down.

Nature’s Child deserved more than this

There was no happy retirement for race-winning thoroughbred Nature’s Child. Her last moments were spent in fear and terror at Laverton Knackery. No horse deserves to die this way. Help save other animals from the same fate by taking action today.

VERY GRAPHIC VIDEO: Sheep Farmer Calls For Pakistan Boycott

Comments Off on VERY GRAPHIC VIDEO: Sheep Farmer Calls For Pakistan Boycott

“The barbaric F-ing pigs, they could at least have used sharp knives…Jesus Christ, I was willing them to get in & pull out the live ones, which they did, I thought yes, they are merciful…but then they proceeded to hack at their necks again with a blunt blade. This is just not good enough, imagine if the UK or US did anything like this, there would be bloody uproar! The time has come for animals raised on certain land, should be slaughtered on that land, pre-packed or frozen…then shipped off…I see no other way around it, that will stop the animals from suffering. If the way they where killing those animals was Kosher or halal, then its the most gruesome form of slaughter ever & shouldn’t be allowed…tradition or not.”

“If the book said all new-born baby boys should be slaughtered at age 12 months, do you think they would still be doing it, because it’s one of their so-called religions?? No I doubt it, well not without hassle from every other Country in the land! Why would any god want the blood of animals to appease them? It’s sickening & needs to bloody stop…you don’t even have to be animal lover to be disgusted with the way the sheep were disposed of. I can for-see some horrific plague or disease coming their way very soon, from the dumped carcasses. I wonder how many poor people,  actually thought about or actually  jumped in the ditch to pull out a carcass to feed themselves? Just thinking out load, sorry”

Pakistan should be permanently boycotted as a market for Australian live exports, a West Australian sheep farmer says.

Sheep awaiting a cull in Pakistan

Bob Ilffa, from the Wheatbelt town of Newdegate, made the comment as the industry braced for an ABC Four Corners program on the recent inhumane slaughter of about 22,000 Australian sheep in Pakistan on health concerns.

The sheep were in limbo for over a month after they were rejected in Bahrain, but further health fears in Pakistan led to them being brutally killed – in some cases buried alive – in two stages.

The culls came after repeated proof by independent veterinarians that the sheep were healthy.

The Fremantle-based exporter Wellard expressed shock when the second cull was ordered on October 20, despite promises from local authorities a day earlier that the remaining sheep would be slaughtered humanely.

The pledge came after the company agreed to drop a court injunction seeking to overturn the government-ordered cull.

Wellard immediately suspended exports to Pakistan, which had only ever been considered a contingent market.

Sheepmeat Council of Australia said it was an isolated, unusual turn of events that led to a totally unacceptable outcome.

But Mr Iffla went a step further, saying he would never send sheep to Pakistan again.

“There’s no way my sheep will ever be going to Pakistan,” he told AAP on Monday.

Mr Iffla said he was in agreement with animal liberationists in calling for the Pakistan market to be snubbed, but did not believe an end to live exports elsewhere was feasible, given the need among many nations to secure protein via imports.

He said he was extremely disappointed with the way the sheep had been killed, especially considering a modern abattoir was readily accessible.

Instead, the animals were clubbed and had their throats roughly slashed in a dusty feedlots.

Pakistan has done the wrong thing by the industry,” Mr Iffla said.

“It’s absolutely appalling behaviour by the Pakistanis, who I don’t believe we can continue to deal with (the country) because it’s just going to wreck the whole live animal trade.”

Mr Iffla said his sheep were currently breeding so another wave of lambs was on the way, but after that, he would rethink his business, producing less meat or even focusing on agriculture. “I don’t know where we’re going,” he said.

“I’m certainly thinking of changing my program to some degree because if we can’t make the profit out of live sheep in the manner that we have been, we’re going to have to diversify into other areas.”

The Queensland Greens reiterated calls to ban live exports, saying it was not within Australia’s power to control what happened to livestock once they were outside the country.

Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon wants the federal government to end the trade through the Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill 2012, but that appears destined to fail in the Senate.

Labor senator Glenn Sterle last month said the Greens were suggesting that with abattoirs back in the north and a boxed meat market in place, everything would be “tickety-boo”.

Mr Iffla also said Australia should stop providing aid to Pakistan because of the cull.

See the truth behind the biggest live export tragedy in history. PAKISTAN 2012. As seen on Four Corners.

Live animal export is an inherently cruel trade, which is why it is opposed by every animal protection organisation throughout the world. It continues for one reason only: profit. What might happen, if exported animals were deemed ‘unfit’ for human consumption and lost all of their economic value? It happened recently in Pakistan. The reality will shock you.

It happened in Pakistan. The reality will shock you.

STAND UP TO LIVE EXPORT CRUELTY

Today, every MP in Australia needs to hear one important message: The actions of the world’s largest live exporter, Wellard, have contributed to Australia’s worst live export disaster. They must be held to account and lose their export licence.

How did it happen? When a shipload of 21,000 sheep was rejected by Bahrain, Wellard had no legitimate contingency plan (despite this being a requirement of their export permit). They considered two options: 1. Kill the animals at sea and dump their bodies overboard; 2. Pakistan — a country that didn’t even have government approval to take sheep when the ship left Australia.

To avoid another disaster at sea, the Australian government fast tracked Pakistan’s approval to receive the sheep. But there was a glaring omission in this plan. Wellard failed to ensure that the Pakistan Government were willing to import a shipment that had been rejected by Bahrain over disease concerns.

Whether the animals were healthy or not became irrelevant — the Pakistan Government felt they had been deliberately deceived. Local authorities ordered the animals be culled, and Wellard lost complete control. Deemed ‘unfit’ for human consumption, and without economic value…

These animals were treated like worthless rubbish. Animals were dragged, beaten, their throats were sawn at with blunt knives before they were thrown into mass graves — some still alive hours later.

The Australian government has admitted that it’s beyond their control to prevent another ‘Pakistan’. MOUs with importing countries, to prevent shipments being rejected, have failed. Regulations to prevent cruelty on the scale seen in Indonesia last year, have failed.

What is profitable has never been the defining argument between right and wrong in any civilised society. It is offensive to the majority of caring people that profit continues to be used as justification for a trade that has been responsible for such suffering and cruelty.

Please urgently call on your federal MP and the Minister for Agriculture (Joe Ludwig) to ensure that Wellard loses their export licence for their role in this disaster. Importantly, please also remind your MP that you will not vote for a party that supports live exports.
