Here is the original video of her rescue. Please see the video with Fiona below this one, where she enjoys a visit from her rescuers a few days ago.

UPDATE: Wonky The Puppy Is Walking Tall After Physio Regime To Straighten Her Legs

Comments Off on UPDATE: Wonky The Puppy Is Walking Tall After Physio Regime To Straighten Her Legs

“Remember I wrote about Wonky a few days ago? Someone abandoned her because of her condition? What they didn’t know is that she had a guardian angel watching over her! Now there are no need for words, the video tells it all. I’m so thrilled that in such a short time this little girl is walking normally….God bless her & all those at the Dogs Trust who changed her life completely. She has so much love to give…whoever ends up adopting this little angel will never regret it! I hope those that abandoned her, receive the karma they so deserve…very soon!”

An 11-week-old puppy has been saved from a life of disability by physiotherapists after her front legs failed to develop.

The puppy, which was nicknamed ‘Wonky’ due to her bent forelegs, has learned to walk again after two weeks intense physiotherapy.
Her rare condition was caused by her front leg tendons not developing properly after she was separated from her mother at an early age.
The Staffordshire bull terrier cross was found wandering on the streets of Bradford after being abandoned.
Staff at the Leeds Dogs Trust straighten Juliet‘s legs 30 times a day, to strengthen her muscles.

Charlie Sheen Pays For Injured Girl’s Therapy Dog

Comments Off on Charlie Sheen Pays For Injured Girl’s Therapy Dog

“Another incredible story, relating to dogs…animals truly are our best friends!!”

Magazines and news headlines are frequently overrun with Charlie Sheen’s unsavoury escapades, but this time there’s a good reason for him to be in the media – he recently donated $10,000 so 15-year-old Teagan Marti could receive a therapy dog.

“I think he’s a very kind person for helping me and my family, and very generous,” Teagan Marti said.

In July of 2010, the Marti family drove from their home in Parkland, Florida to Extreme World in Wisconsin Dells after Teagan had seen theTerminal Velocityfree fall ride on the Travel Channel.

Charlie Sheen

“I figured that it would be safe and be fine to do. … I watched several people before her. … I saw several times that it was being done and it looked like everything was organized and done well,” said father Alex Marti.

“Except in this case, the platform went up and never reached the top, and we were waiting for it to go to the top, and they were trying to lift the net below and before – the net was still on the ground, and all of a sudden, she’s released from the bucket.  And she falls 100 feet directly to the ground.  To me, it’s just impossible to imagine that something like that could happen.”

Teagan, just moments before her tragic fall.

The then 12-year-old girl suffered injuries to her skull and pelvis, and 10 fractures in her spine.

“She was basically unconscious, not moving and laying flat on her back with blood coming out of her ears and nose,” Alex explained.  “Just a horrible, horrible scene.  At the moment she fell and I heard that loud thud, I just assumed she was dead.”

Alex, a radiologist, performed CPR on his daughter and brought her back to life.  She was hospitalized for three months, and with physical therapy, is able to walk with a walker.

Teagan’s mother Julie said they are in financial trouble because of medical bills and her recent divorce.  Their home is being foreclosed upon and their insurance is no longer covering Teagan’s physical therapy.  The idea of a therapy dog seemed to be out of the question.

“I’m in such disbelief,” Julie said.  “I was crying. … What a guy.  What a guy.”

Lucia Wilgus became friends with the Martis after learning about their daughter’s injury.  She organized fundraising, found a golden retriever puppy and arranged for training.  She sent a letter to a family friend who is Sheen’s godfather.

The dog is being trained to turn on lights, pick up objects and to just be a good companion to Teagan.  Wilgus estimated the training and related costs to be about $6,000.  Sheen said the request had a “personal vibe” since it came through his grandfather, and he decided to send extra money.

“If there’s a need for more I told them to call me,” he said.

“I like to pay it forward,” Sheen said.  “People come into your orbit for a reason.  You don’t always know what that is ahead of time, but if I ignore these requests then I don’t have any opportunity to see where these things lead us, or lead me.”

Sheen said he doesn’t like to broadcast his donations, but wanted to make this one public to inspire others to donate.

Teagan will receive the dog on her birthday in September.  She hasn’t yet picked a name out for it.

“I think they should name the dog Charlie,” Sheen said jokingly

“Lots of people talk to animals; not very many listen, apart from Audrey & Eldad Hagar!”

“They are more than just kind souls who rescues stray dogs; they are the difference between life & death for the animals they rescue. They come upon dogs, some so scared; they literally defecate with fright! Yet as soon as Eldad or Audrey lay their hands on them, the animals  instinctively know they are in safe, gentle, loving arms.”

“They started to document their rescues on video & have captured some truly  heartbreaking yet inspiring rescues of animals abused, abandoned & neglected. They have also published books about their rescues; I would urge anyone who loves animals to read their rescues stories of hope & unconditional love! The first edition was so popular they have now released a second edition that is available from the ‘Hope For Paws’ website.”

Go to their YouTube account & watch other rescues, to see what I mean…They truly are guardian angels to animals! I have the utmost respect & admiration for all they do, rescuing dogs, others may pass by! They foster all the animals they rescue & help them heal;until they find forever homes for them all!”

“Some of my favourite quotes; reminding us all, how sentient beings need the same love, support & respect as any human does! Just because they are voiceless, does not mean animals are without emotion!” If only all fellow humans could understand this concept; what a wonderful world it would be, for all!!”

We must never allow the voice of humanity within us to be silenced. It is humanity’s sympathy with all creatures that first makes us truly human.

Albert Schweitzer

Any religion not based on a respect for life is not a true religion. Until he extend his circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, man will not himself find peace.

-Albert Schweitzer

A man is truly ethical only when he obeys the compulsion to help all life he is able to assist and shrinks from injuring anything that lives.
-Albert Schweitzer

“We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.” – Albert Schweitzer

You cannot do a kindness too soon, because you never know how soon it will be too late.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.

Diesel: From Death Row to Certified Search & Rescue Dog

Comments Off on Diesel: From Death Row to Certified Search & Rescue Dog

“I love a good rescue story & this is one of the best. Had these good people not stepped in, Diesel would have been looking down from Rainbow Bridge! I wonder if whoever sent him to the pound, bought him as a family pet for very small children; then realised he was a bit too boisterous for them to handle. Whatever the story, I’m so happy this beautiful dog has found his true calling in life.”

“But it just goes to show how many decent, good dogs do get sent to death row, through no real fault of their own. Perhaps if their owners just spent a little more time picking the right breed for their family & found time to train their dogs properly, instead of just letting them find their own way; they wouldn’t end up being so misjudged. Kudos to the Missouri German Shepherd rescue group & Monroe City SAR, for giving this dog his life back!”

He was on death’s doorstep last January, one week away from being euthanized due to having been labeled an “aggressive dog” by the Missouri German Shepherd Rescue.

His name was Koda, and he was believed to be unfit to be in public.  Then Monroe City Search and Rescue stepped in and rescued the 3 year old, and nothing has been the same since.

On January 13th, Koda was picked up and brought to the home of Monroe City SAR  and within days was displaying his agility and intelligence.  He was so enthusiastic that his name was immediately changed to Diesel.  He has never looked back.  Lead K-9 Handler Rich Enochs used tennis balls as rewards and nothing could make Diesel happier.  He adjusted very quickly to life at SAR and got along well with the other dogs, so much so it was hard to believe that what they were initially told about Diesel’s behavior was true.

Monroe City K9 Search & Rescue is a Non-Profit 100% volunteer based organization dedicated to finding the missing, lost and injured.  SAR K9s are trained to find living victims that m may be trapped, injured or lost.  ”Find” is the most important word they know.

SAR dogs are trained to follow a scent in different terrain and weather conditions and to identify the victim from other scents. Their skills are sharpened through regular training sessions and by handlers with daily training at home and in the field, and their training is ongoing and time intensive.

It’s as if Diesel was born to be a SAR dog.  He has become a True SAR K9, visits with the Mentally Handicapped, is “Best Buds” with the Lead Handler’s 2yr old grandson and has become family with the other SAR K9s and,  on October 9th Diesel passed his certification testing.

He is certainly enjoying his new role and being the benefactor of the love and attention he deserves, and Monroe City Search and Rescue made all this possible by believing in him.

Three Legged Dog Helps Boy With Genetic Condition

Comments Off on Three Legged Dog Helps Boy With Genetic Condition

“What a super kid & a very big dog 🙂 I hope they will have many more happy years together. Dogs are not just pets…they are our best friend, someone to talk to, to lean on, to lay on, yes dogs are special; each one in its own unique way…they love to love, what more can I say…apart from excuse any spelling mistakes because I have my Chihuahua curled up next the keyboard on the right, & on the left my Yorkshire Terrier (who has no eyes from glaucoma) so any mistakes are not me 🙂

Seven-year-old Owen Howkins of Basingstoke, England has Schwartz-Jampel syndrome, which affects his muscles, joints and appearance.  Because of this, he is overwhelmingly shy, and doesn’t like to leave the house.  At school, he rarely talks to the other children.

“When he first started school, he became more aware of being different, and he became even more withdrawn,” said Colleen Drummond, his father’s girlfriend.

But things are different now that Owen has Haatchi, and Anatolian Shepherd.  Haatchi is different, too – he has only three legs.  He lost his left hind leg earlier this year to a train when the five-month-old pup was abandoned and tied to a set of train tracks.  He was found days later and taken care of by the UK’s Royal SPCA.  Owen’s family adopted Haatchi after reading his heart-wrenching story on Facebook.

“As soon as they met, the effect Haatchi had on Owen was incredible,” Colleen said.

She’s said Haatchi’s missing leg has sent a message to Owen, letting him know it’s ok to be different.

“Owen used to be scared of strangers, but now he wants to talk to everyone about Haatchi and wants to go out all the time to dog shows,” Colleen said.

Owen’s father, Will, said it’s as if Owen is one of his pups.

“Haatchi will come and drink out of the bath when I’m bathing Owen, and they don’t like to be apart.”

Haatchi’s training as a therapy dog has worked wonders on Owen.  Now he will work his magic when he goes to visit injured soldiers and sick children.

Update on Xena The Warrior Puppy

“WOW…what a transformation, I can’t believe how far she has come in such a short time. I donated a few dollars but honestly thought it would pay for another dog! How wrong we all were. It just show’s with the right love & attention, these throw away dogs can become the centre of someone’s family. To be loved, snuggled up to whilst watching TV, & making you laugh with their silly antics.”

“Her story has touched many people, probably because of her amazing spirit to live! Please don’t pass these dogs off as untouchables, they all have the biggest hearts & just want to share their love with someone…& ask very little in return!!”

“If you can afford to donate a few dollars, it all adds up, hopefully when the next case comes along, the fee’s will be there to literally pay for their lives. If you donate & see the transformation, it makes one feel a part of their healing, & is such a joy to behold, knowing that you helped save a life, is the best feeling in the world”

When we rescued Xena we had no idea if she would make it through the day.

We took her to the vet hoping that she may eventually pull through. We were shocked to see how quickly she responded and amazed by her will to live.

This girl’s story of survival has touched more people than we will ever know. In honor of Xena’s one month anniversary, we’d like to raise funds to help more shelter pets in need.

There are many animals in need at Dekalb County Animal Services every day. Xena is one of the lucky ones.

We hope that we can raise enough money to help/treat more animals that need our help

Faith The Pony – Our beautiful little three legged Amputee

Comments Off on Faith The Pony – Our beautiful little three legged Amputee

“WOW… 2000 posts…I’ve finally achieved something that means a lot to me. Being disabled I find it hard to do anything where I feel like I have actually done something worthwhile or made a difference. All my achievements used to be with my horses etc. & animal welfare activities. I used to love going to horse sales & doing undercover work for local area managers from World Horse Welfare. I can’t do any of the things I used to do, pain rules & dictates my life.  So I’m going to pat my self on the back & say well done….I never thought I would manage 200… so yes, I am rather chuffed with my little self.”

“So I wanted something special to mark the occasion, something that I love…yup horses…just check out this little cheeky chap. I also wanted to show this, to prove that in horse racing, when a horse falls & breaks a leg etc. they don’t have to be put down…there is no excuse to shoot them, when they can recover like Faith. There are many amputee horses with prosthetic legs, but then again, they have owners who love them as pets, not as money makers!! Enjoy!”

“And little Cookie, thrown out like trash…I will never understand how a human heart can be so cruel. Yet I am so happy places like this exist. Visit their website to see the marvellous work they do!”

Faith is doing very well and will be returning from the vets in Barcelona to the Rescue Centre this autumn 2012. With her new prosthetic leg, she will return to her soft grassed garden and her friends.

We will continue to post updates on her facebook page (Faith the Pony) and you are more than welcome to come and visit her during the open days once she has returned, to see just how wonderfully she is doing.

On Easter Saturday we received an emergency call for help after a pony was found abandoned to die on waste ground in Benijofar.
Spotted by a group of children, the pony was in a shocking state – half bald and covered in mud and faeces.
Our volunteers rushed to the scene with an officer from Benijofar police. When they arrived they found the pony lying on a pathway.
It looked as though she had simply lain down to die. She could not have survived much longer. If it had not been for the children who found her and the fast action of Benijofar Police and council calling us, we would have been dealing with a dead pony.

True Friends Are Forever: Captain Faithfully Guards His Owner’s Final Resting Place

Comments Off on True Friends Are Forever: Captain Faithfully Guards His Owner’s Final Resting Place

“Dogs never cease to amaze me, true unconditional love; to the very end!! That’s a lot more than humans give each other…which one has the biggest heart & is the most loyal? The DOGS of course!”

Ever watchful, Capitan guards the final resting place of his friend Miguel Guzman. He has loyally spent every night at the cemetery sleeping on the grave of his owner.

Argentinian Miguel Guzman brought Capitan home as a present for his son Damian. Tragically, one year later Guzman died suddenly.

Capitan ran away and his family feared him lost. Imagine their astonishment when they went to pay their respects to their husband and father and found their lost dog sitting beside Guzman’s grave.

Capitan was grieving for his companion. According to Veronica Guzman, Mr. Guzman’s widow, “The following Sunday we went to the cemetery and Damian recognized his pet. Capitan came up to us, barking and wailing, as if he were crying.

How he managed to locate Guzman is unknown. Mrs. Guzman said,”We had never taken him to the cemetery so it is a mystery how he managed to find the place”.

‘We went back the next Sunday, and he was there again. This time, he followed us home and spent a bit of time with us, but then went back to the cemetery before it started getting dark.

‘I don’t think he wanted to leave Miguel on his own at night.’

Cemetery director Hector Baccega recalls that, “he turned up here one day, all on his own, and started wandering all around the cemetery until he eventually found the tomb of his master.

‘During the day he sometimes has a walk around the cemetery, but always rushes back to the grave. And every day, at six o’clock sharp, he lies down on top of the grave stays there all night.’

The cemetery staff are so impressed with Capitan’s unending love for Mr. Guzman that they provide him with food and water and care for him.

Mr Guzman’s son Damian said: ‘I’ve tried to bring Capitan home several times, but he always comes straight back to the cemetery. I think he’s going to be there until he dies too. He’s looking after my dad.’

Lonely Old Dog Has His Final Wish Fulfilled – Here Is His Story

Comments Off on Lonely Old Dog Has His Final Wish Fulfilled – Here Is His Story

“This is a beautiful example of how humans can give compassion & empathy to a dear old dog, who only wished one thing…to be loved & feel love…towards the end, his wishes came true!…God bless the guy’s who gave Ol Boy, the love he so wanted & deserved. Gone but never forgotten x R.I.P  Ol Boy….Get your Kleenex ready!

We are posting this story in tribute to Ol Boy. His story shows us there are some truly great humans out there! We highly recommend grabbing a box of kleenex before hitting play. Thank you to Beth Zimmerman from Pets for Patriots for sharing this touching story with us.

Ol boy was born on the streets. Like many street dogs, he had a number of health problems – ticks, wasting, infections and possible cancer.

When a rescue team took Ol Boy in for treatment, they found him laying in his own filth and unable to move. His weakness, however, wasn’t an accident.

Even after treatment, Ol Boy was in a lot of discomfort and had little time left. He did, however, want to die naturally and feel the love and warmth of a home for the first time. So the rescue team granted his wish and let Ol Boy experience something he never had before – love.

Members of the team stuck by his side, giving Ol Boy the care and companionship he had longed for. He had to be given water, as he was too weak to get himself up to drink. The team stood vigil for him, along with some of the other dogs in the home.

R.I.P old boy – You may have gone, but your will never be forgotten!

By 2am, Ol Boy sat up and had a drink of water for the final time. He finally passed away peacefully at 4am.

Before he died, Ol Boy had shown a beach to his communicator. Upon his passing, the team Ol Boy worked to fulfill his final wish. Ol Boy was cremated and spread his ashes along the beach – where he could finally run free.

A big thank you to the rescue team who allowed Ol Boy the chance to experience the love and understanding that all dogs deserve, even strays.
