A group of animal activists staged a protest today in Beijing in a bid to stop a Chinese dog-eating festival set to occur later this month.

This must stop: A group of around 30 animal activists staged a protest today in Beijing in a bid to stop the Yulin dog meat festival

The demonstration, initiated by three animal protection groups, submitted a petition allegedly signed by over 11 million people, calling on the Chinese authorities to end the Yulin dog meat festival.

The annual festival, which takes place in south China’s Guangxi Province, sees tens of thousands of animals beaten to death, cooked and sold on the market to celebrate summer solstice.

Around 30 activists carried out the protest outside of the Yulin government office as the petition was presented to the authority by three animal charities: Humane Society International, VShine and Beijing Mothers Against Animal Cruelty.

Pictures from today’s event show animal campaigners, many of whom brought their own pet dogs, holding signs saying ‘Scumbag of China’ in English and ‘Shame on Yulin’ in Simplified Chinese.

Wendy Higgins, the Director of International Media at Humane Society International, said over 11 million signatures had been collected worldwide through the internet to demand the festival to stop.

The petition also included signatures gathered by four other international animal welfare organisations. They are RaiseURPaw in Canada as well as the Duo Duo Project, Care2 and Avaaz from the United States.

The petition has been accepted by officials from the Yulin government in Beijing, according to Ms Higgins.

Peter Li, the China Policy Expert at Humane Society International, attended the protest in Beijing today.

Mr Li told MailOnline:

‘There was a huge presence of police, but our hand-in went very peacefully. It was a great feeling to join with our Chinese partner group activists in Beijing today, there was a tremendous sense of determination to get our voices heard to the global media, and to let the world know that many people across China want the brutal Yulin dog meat festival shut down.

He added: ‘We gave a show of strength and defiance against the dog thieves and the blatant animal cruelty, to say loudly – you will not steal our best friends!

‘I hope that the authorities listen, they really should do as the strength of public upset about Yulin and the trade here in China is really growing.

‘Next stop for me is Yulin, where I have been a number of times before, for the grim task of visiting the slaughterhouses before the festival starts.’

329f258d00000578-0-image-a-62_1465547648595Sickening feast: Residents in Yulin tucked in their dinner made with dog meat during last year’s festival. Many of the animals, which were caged and beaten before being slaughtered, are thought to be stolen pets!

Xu Yufeng, founder of Beijing Mothers Against Animal Cruelty who were also present at the protest, said: ‘Yulin is a total embarrassment to China.

‘Its failure to stop mass dog slaughter and mass dog consumption shows that the local authorities are not doing their job to protect the people, especially young children.

‘We urge the Yulin authorities to stand on the right side of history and to end the “festival” in the interests of public security, food safety, social morality and China’s reputation.’

Another member of the protesters, Pan Danyang from China-based small animal protection group VShine, said:

‘This is the third year of our participation in the nation-wide campaign against the Yulin dog meat festival. ‘Since we have over the last few years helped accommodate dogs rescued from the dog meat trade, we know Yulin’s dog meat market relies on dogs from suspicious sources. ‘I hope that Yulin authorities will take actions to stop the dog trucks from going into their city so that the mass slaughter on the summer solstice day won’t happen.’

Information about the Yulin Dog Meat Festival

Here is a list of the various levels of corruption I found connected to the festival:

*STOLEN PETS

“An animal rights lawyer in Beijing said that official claims that all dogs are bred by local dog farmers is false. An Xiang said according to research there are no such farms and that all dogs are abducted from the streets.”

“It is thought most dogs are pets or strays abducted from streets. Vendors then buy them for around nine yuan (85p) and sold for 25 yuan. People who steal the dogs make the biggest profits of all, the news agency said.

*CRIMINAL LAWS ARE BROKEN

“Some of the animal thieves broke Criminal Law using weapons to threaten residents to hand over their dogs,” Li said.

*MEAT NOT PROPERLY QUARANTINED

“Another risk factor highlighted is poor food safety. Liu Lang, director of the Beijing Small Animal Veterinary Association said butchers slaughtering the dogs are at risk of rabies, while the meat is not properly quarantined or inspected, increasing the chance of food safety problems.”

“While a quarantine regulation on dogs and cats was introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture last year, meaning all cats and dogs had to be quarantined before transport, this is rarely observed, he added.”

*ILLEGAL SLAUGHTERHOUSES

“Li said there were no dog farms or slaughterhouses that safely produce dog meat: “I was told there are four major workshops that produce dog meat in the city. I visited them and found all of them had no business licences or certificates.”

*UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO PROTECT ONE GROUP BUT NOT THE OTHER

“Medical staff have been banned from attending the dog meat festival by health authorities from three local hospitals: “According to the directive issued by higher authorities, hospital staff are prohibited from having dog meat at food stalls, restaurants or hotels in Yudong and Fumian districts,” the notice read.”

*HIDING THE FACTS/TRUTH

“According to South Morning China Post, local restaurants have been ordered to cover the word, dog, on signs to appease protesters: “Food safety authorities told us to change our signboards due to the objection of certain dog lovers,” staff members reportedly said.”

*LOCAL YULIN GOVERNMENT STILL CULPABLE*IT’S UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO NOT PROTECT YOUR CITIZENS“In Yulin, local authorities have stressed that they had no hand in organizing the controversial dog fest.

(http://www.worldcrunch.com/china-2.0/china-traditional-dog-meat-recipes-v.-new-animal-rights-activism/animal-rights-animals-shark-fins-dog-pets-wildlife/c9s17554/#.VI1hztKG89l)

Conclusion: Corruption is flagrant and decimating China’s cats and dogs ruins China’s reputation, threatening their economy.

Conclusion: The YDMF is detrimental to the social and moral development of China’s citizens.

Conclusion: China needs to develop animal welfare laws and not use the YDMF to “clean-up” their stray cats and dogs.

Conclusion: Allowing the YDMF to continue, contravenes the Chinese Constitution and other laws and administrative regulations because every aspect of the YDMF is illegal and makes China look bad in the world’s eyes. There is more to this festival than China’s ability and freedom to eat cats and dogs and the  false health benefits derived from part-taking in the consumption of cat and dog meat, but the festival enables corruption to run rampant throughout China and its bordering countries, like Vietnam. It is imperative to the people of China, specifically for the prosperity of their children, for the good of their social and moral development and the benefit of good health, that the local YuLin government be encouraged to cancel the festival.

The annual YuLin Summer Solstice Dog Eating Festival takes place on June 21st, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China.

This video demonstrates the cruelty cats and dogs go through prior to the festival. Their journey to the festival is wrought with much pain and agony. Because there are no animal welfare protection laws in China, saving them from the sordid dog meat trade (DMT) is difficult. The owners of stolen pets have no recourse either because laws are not broken.

Graphic Video: Animals Are Not Ours To Abuse; Petitions To Sign

It’s simple: Animals exist for their own reasons—they don’t want to be trapped in the wild, torn away from their families, confined to cages or small tanks, beaten, neglected, abused, or killed. You can relate, right?

The only reason why people eat, wear, confine, and kill animals is because animals can’t fight back. Industries that exploit animals may not listen to the voices of the animals who are crying out for help, but they will listen to yours!

Viewer Discretion Advised

Whether it’s making sure always to adopt animals from shelters instead of buying from a breeder or a pet store, telling local stores to ditch glue traps, speaking out against dissection or cruel events like “donkey basketball” at school, reporting chained dogs or dogfighting in the local neighborhood, or volunteering at a local animal shelter, we all can make simple decisions that help animals every single day.

For All Dog Owners: China Refuses To Halt Production Of Chicken Jerky Dog Treats

Comments Off on For All Dog Owners: China Refuses To Halt Production Of Chicken Jerky Dog Treats

“Sorry this is late, I’m still playing catch up from being in hospital”

As pet owners prepare to stuff stockings and buy holiday treats for their beloved dogs, it is important to remember the potential risks in some dog treats.

All the over nation there have been reports of dogs getting sick and even dying from chicken jerky dog treats, many of which are made in China.

Now the Chinese government has finally responded and says it will not halt production of these treats.

Since 2007, the FDA has become aware of an increasing number of illnesses due to jerky pet treats, mostly chicken jerky. The FDA issued a report in September in which they stated, “Over the past 18 months the reports have contained information on 360 canine deaths and one feline death.”

The FDA has been investigating the issue and has yet to find a definitive cause. The majority of dog treats are made in China, and the amount imported from China to North America in the last decade has increased immensely.

Rachel Chambers of Morgan Hill, California lost her dog Cali in May because of chicken treats. “It’s been sad and hard on our family, but I think what’s been harder is to understand why almost seven months later there’s more dead dogs and nothing has changed,” Chambers said.

Rachael Chamber’s dog Cali

Bay Area Congressman Jerry McNeary reached out to the Chinese government in a letter asking them to “consider halting production of these chicken jerky treats until the FDA can determine whether or not the products contained tainted material.”

The Chinese government wrote back and stated they would not halt production. The Chinese government faulted the FDA for putting an advisory alert on its website even though the exact cause of deaths has not been found. “From the perspective of the Chinese side, there might be something wrong with the FDA’s investigation guidance,” wrote the Chinese government.

Dr. Jaspal Harika, who performed the necropsy on Cali, doesn’t agree with the Chinese government’s claim that the FDA is in the wrong. “They really know what they do. They’re one of the top scientists and research workers,” Harika said. While production of these treats has not been halted, the FDA reminds pet owners that jerky pet treats are not necessary for your pet.

“For your pet’s safety, please be cautious!!”

500 Chinese Cats Saved From The Cooking Pot

Comments Off on 500 Chinese Cats Saved From The Cooking Pot

“This truly was a lucky day, had the police not stopped the truck, the cats wouldn’t have made it! Of course the animal lovers who came to their rescue & bought them, probably out of their own pockets…Kudos to these guys. I just hope they can find loving homes for them all, or at least a decent shelter until they can be adopted. Animal lovers are rising up around the world…we are being heard & we can make a difference. There are a few of the many petitions at the end of this post, lets keep up the pressure & force the Chinese Government to listen…please sign!”

Police in the eastern Chinese city of Xuzhou have intercepted a lorry carrying 500 cats destined for the cooking pot.

Some of the cats, thought to be destined for a restaurant table, that were intercepted in Xuzhou Photo: One of the cats, thought to be destined for a restaurant table, that was intercepted in Xuzhou

There has been extra security on China’s roads ahead of next week’s once-in-a-decade leadership change, and officers in Xuzhou pulled over the lorry when they noticed it had out-of-town license plates.

Cats face cruel death at restaurants, these are the lucky one’s

When they heard mewling from under the tarpaulin covering its cargo, they asked the drivers what they were transporting. “Rabbits,” came the response.

Instead, the lorry was carrying dozens of rusty iron cages filled with cats. In recent years, the appetite for cat meat in the south of China has created a supply chain that reaches across the country.

Very Lucky Cats

A notorious Cantonese dish is “Tiger and Dragon Locked in Battle”, a hot pot of cat and snake meat.

The appetite for the dish has already made cats scarce and costly in the southern region of Guangdong, and restaurants in the province have had to look elsewhere for a steady supply.

There is no law in China against selling cats, since cats are not regarded as household possessions. Cat snatchers generally make around 10 yuan (£1) per cat and sell them to middlemen who then arrange transport to the south.

How could anyone hurt them, let alone eat them…Sickening!!

While the lorry had therefore not breached any laws, the police contacted animal lovers in Xuzhou who negotiated for almost three hours before reaching a deal with the drivers to buy their feline cargo for 3,500 yuan (£350).“Angels without wings”

UPDATE On Kabang – Heroic dog who had nose ripped off saving two young girls from bike crash has treatment postponed after vets find tumour

Comments Off on UPDATE On Kabang – Heroic dog who had nose ripped off saving two young girls from bike crash has treatment postponed after vets find tumour

Update on Kabang, this news is not good but vets are hopeful she will pull through. What an amazing dog, to lose half her face then suffer with a tumour & heartworm. I just hope this further set back will not lessen her zest for life. God bless her, my prayers & thoughts are with Kabang & the surgeons who everyone is looking to, to give this sweet girl her face back.

A courageous dog who became an international hero after losing her nose saving two young girls, has had her muzzle-surgery postponed after it was discovered she needs chemo.

Kabang the dog won celebrity status when she jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle to save her owner’s young daughter and niece, but lost her upper jaw in the process.

After local veterinarians failed to help her, the dog was flown to the U.S. where her doctors now say she needs treatment for heart worm and chemotherapy before she can undergo facial reconstruction.

Helping a hero: Kabang’s facial surgery has been postponed after veterinarians at University of California at Davis discovered a vaginal tumour and heartworm

After the accident her owner was told by Filipino veterinarians he should put her down, but he refused.

Kabang’s plight reached Karen Kenngott, a critical care nurse from Buffalo, New York, who set up a charity campaign to help.

Care For Kabang raised over $20,000 from 22 countries to cover the costs of surgeries, visas and airfare.

She was flown to the University of California at Davis for specialist treatment to the wound on her face, where doctors discovered a tumour and the heartworm

The veterinarians are ‘cautiously optimistic’ that Kabang will make a full recovery and return to the Philippines, Dr. Jane Sykes of the University hospital said.

‘She’s a very sweet dog and everyone here became attached to her quite quickly,’ the director of the facility’s small animal clinic said.

‘We’re eager to help her get better.’

The horrific accident occurred in December 2011 when the daughter of Kabang’s owner, nine-year-old Dina Bunggal, and her cousin three-year old Princess Diansing, were playing with the dog in Zamboanga City, Philippines.

The girls were crossing a busy street when a motorcycle came speeding right towards them.

Eyewitnesses said that Kabang appeared out of nowhere and threw herself in front the vehicle just before it hit the two children.

Kabang’s face became tangled in the spokes of the bike’s wheel, and her entire upper jaw was torn off.

Kabang, who became a mother to six little puppies in April this year, had a rough start in life when Dina’s father Rudy found her abandoned in a rice paddy.

He brought the dog home to fatten her up and feed her to the family, but his daughter and niece convinced him to spare Kabang and keep her as a pet – a lucky move for both dog and family.

Once recovered from the chemotherapy and heartworm treatment, Kabang will undergo dental surgery and facial reconstruction.

Her veterinarians at U.C. at Davis have said there are no plans to give her a prosthetic nose to replace the one she lost.

Grateful dog: Kabang was found in a rice paddy as a puppy and was nearly killed for meat, but her owner’s daughter and niece pleaded for her life

Groundbreaking regulation bans consumption of dog meat in Weixian County, China and promotes the human-canine bond

Comments Off on Groundbreaking regulation bans consumption of dog meat in Weixian County, China and promotes the human-canine bond

n June 2012, Weixian County, in Hebei Province, became the first county in China to adopt a comprehensive regulation that bans both the consumption of dog meat and the slaughter of dogs for consumption. The enactment of the new law, which also requires rabies vaccinations for dogs in the county, came as a surprise in an area where the now-banned practices have long occurred.

While consumption of dog meat is not universally common in China, it has been a culturally accepted practice. Recently, however, there has been a groundswell of demands for protection of dogs against cruelty from within China.

In what animal welfare advocates are calling a sign of changing times, China has had at least three recent high-profile rescues, in which a total of 1,500 dogs were seized from trucks taking them for slaughter.

Evolving public views of the dog meat trade and the use of social media alerts played a role in gathering the hundreds of local advocates who participated in blockades involved with the rescues.

At the time of the three rescues, transport of dogs for the  meattrade was legal everywhere. In order to take control of the dogs, advocates had to negotiate a payment to dissuade traders driving the trucks from continuing with their cargo.

The increased inclusion of dogs as members of Chinese households could be related to growing opposition to the dog meat trade.

Local animal welfare groups have thus far footed the bill to obtain the dogs and transfer them to their shelters, so that they could be re-homed as family companions.

The rescue events gained international attention and have also helped shed light on the often compromised health of dogs bound for consumption, which in turn has raised questions about the safety of the practice for human consumers.

Opinions on the forces behind China’s changing views of dog meat differ. Some believe that a contributing factor could be the growth of the middle class in China, and with it, the increased inclusion of dogs in Chinese households as companions and family members.

Evidence that some companion dogs are being stolen and sold for slaughter could also be fueling the growing disapproval of the trade. While advocates acknowledge that they face an uphill battle in convincing more counties to enact similar progressive laws, Weixian County’s bold move effectively sets an important precedent for dog protection in China. Their action will benefit the future of the human-canine bond across that country.

Coca Cola, Acer, Atos, Dow, GE, McDonalds, Omega, Panasonic, P&G, Visa: Withdraw your sponsorship of PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics in S. Korea!

Comments Off on Coca Cola, Acer, Atos, Dow, GE, McDonalds, Omega, Panasonic, P&G, Visa: Withdraw your sponsorship of PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics in S. Korea!

To the Sponsors of PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea:

Please withdraw your sponsorship of PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea!

Bishop Desmond Tutu said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

As sponsors of the Olympics, you have the power to influence the S. Korean government to end the horrific cruelty that is perpetrated against innocent dogs and cats of South Korea.

Two and a half million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, hanged, or beaten to death each year. They are killed in the cruelest ways imaginable, because many South Koreans believe the insidious myth that the more an animal suffers, the tastier the meat and that the medical properties will be enhanced. Thousands of cats are also slaughtered for soups and so-called “health” tonics. They are thrown into boiling water while still alive.

The practice of eating dogs is not widely accepted in South Korea. It gained popularity after the South Korean War. The practice continues to thrive with the aid of greedy restaurateurs, meat dealers, and butchers.

Over the last decade, many in South Korea have embraced the notion of dogs and cats as animal companions. But we must take action to persuade the South Korean government to legalize a ban on dog and cat meat and forever stop this technically illegal, corrupt, and sordid industry.
It is appalling that dogs and cats should be kept in filthy crates, forced to watch their cage mates being tortured and slaughtered.

Eyewitnesses have reported dogs being literally torn apart while still alive, their tormentors saying that the more prolonged the torment of death, the better the taste. This attitude toward any living being is at best unforgivable.

Certain things are more important than money. Standing up for what is right is one. And when you show the world that you stand up for the justice and compassion, your business will grow that much more and most of all, you will gain the respect from the billions of people around the globe.
Thank you!

Respectfully,
