This video is hard to watch for anyone who’s ever loved wolves or wildlife. but we’re asking you not to look away. Right now in 5 states trapping and killing of wolves like this is totally legal. It’s all because of a rash and ill-informed decision made by Congress. But we need President Obama to act NOW to save the wolves.

Animal group offers $5,000 reward

LONG BEACH, Wash. — The reward for catching the driver who ripped through a flock of sea birds in Long Beach, killing 92 of them, has been topped up in a big way.

The national group PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has offered $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Sgt. Dan Chadwick of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating.

“That’s a pretty good reward for any wildlife-related crime,” Chadwick said. “That will definitely get somebody’s attention.”

The money is in addition to the $500 reward already offered by the Wildlife Centre of the North Coast.

The dead sandpiper-type shorebirds called dunlin were found Dec. 27 north of the Cranberry Beach approach on Long Beach.

Two beachcombers out for a mid-day stroll near the Cranberry Beach entrance, walked by a large flock of dunlins. But when the pair returned 20 minutes later, carcasses littered the beach. Wide tire tracks were imprinted on the sand in a clear sign of a bird strike.

The couple alerted authorities and WDFW and the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Stephanie Bell, associate director of PETA’s cruelty investigations, said its leadership was horrified.

“The alleged crime was vicious,” she said. “Many of the animals had torn wings and died of their injuries.”

Sharnelle Fee, director of the Wildlife Center of the North Coast, said the trauma the birds suffered is consistent with a collision with a motor vehicle.

“For these little birds, you really have to work hard to kill them,” Fee said. “You have to get up a good head of steam and blast through them. You can’t just mosey through. They run and fly fast.”

Seabirds and shorebirds are protected under Washington state law. It is illegal to harm or kill them.

“This senseless attack on these gentle birds isn’t just vicious and cruel – it’s also against state and federal wildlife protection and anti-cruelty laws,” said PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “Long Beach residents have good cause to be concerned: According to law-enforcement agencies and leading mental-health professionals, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to all animals – including humans.”

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police say a vehicle has to be travelling considerably faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit to hit these types of birds. Dunlins are able to reach speeds of 110 mph.

Intentionally killing even one bird is illegal in Washington. Perpetrators can face up to a year in jail and a $20,000 fine for killing a protected animal. In Oregon, the maximum penalty is a year in jail and a fine of $6,250.

Man mauled to death by grizzly bears while cleaning enclosure at Montana wildlife park

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A trainer who was mauled to death while cleaning the pen of two, 500-pound brown bears at a Montana wildlife casting agency suffered extensive wounds that make it impossible to determine if he was conscious before the attack, authorities said Monday.

There were no defensive wounds on the hands or arms of 24-year-old Benjamin Cloutier when his body was pulled from the pen on Sunday, and he apparently had not used the bear spray he was carrying, said Demetri Price, head trainer at Animals of Montana near Bozeman.

As a result, Price has speculated that Cloutier might have fallen and hit his head before being killed.

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin confirmed the absence of defensive wounds and the non-use of the spray. But he said there was no way to prove Cloutier was unconscious when the attack began.

“The body had been attacked so fiercely, there were so many injuries that there was no way — that’s why we’re not going to speculate,” Gootkin said.

However, he said it was clear that Cloutier died of bite and claw wounds that hit major arteries.

The death remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and wardens from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. It has been listed as accidental and is not considered a criminal matter.

Animals of Montana provides captive-bred animals for photography shoots and motion pictures, ranging from African lions and minks to badgers and bobcats. The company says the bears have been used in “attack re-enactments” for films in which trainers are used as stuntmen.

Cloutier had worked as a trainer at the company since 2008 and had been in the bear enclosure hundreds of times, Price said.

Price was the first person to arrive at the pen after the mauling. He described Cloutier’s death as a “tragic accident” and insisted it was not an attack. Cloutier did not scream for help, and none of the other animals at the facility showed any signs of alarm before the discovery, Price said.

“I believe, given all things accounted for, that (Cloutier) was somehow rendered unconscious, whether it be he slipped and hit his head or something” else, Price said. “The bears we believed killed him, but we don’t believe it was an attack scenario.”

Price said he was approaching the enclosure when he saw the victim on the ground with two captive-bred, 8-year-old male bears nearby. One of the bears, nicknamed Griz, was behaving as though he had taken possession of the victim, and Price said he had to kill the animal so he could get to Cloutier.

When he did, Cloutier was dead, with wounds inflicted by Griz or the other bear in the enclosure, nicknamed Yosemite.

Cloutier was originally from York Haven, Pa. Price said the staff at Animals of Montana had suffered “a double loss” with the death of Cloutier and the loss of Griz, which he called the favorite animal of the victim.

Cloutier’s family could not be immediately reached for comment.

Animals of Montana had three bears prior to Sunday that were identified on the company’s website as grizzly bears.

However, the facility’s permit for the two involved in the mauling lists them as Syrian brown bears, a subspecies of brown bears that are different from grizzlies, said Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokeswoman Andrea Jones.

The company had the necessary state and federal permits to keep the bears. But its license is being reviewed in the wake of the death, and the company’s permit to exhibit Yosemite has been suspended pending the investigation, Jones said.

64 Wolves Killed In Opening Days of Hunt: Protect Red Wolves

Duluth, Minn. — Minnesota wolf hunters have killed 64 wolves as of 8 p.m. Monday in the first weekend of the state’s first regulated wolf hunt.

The DNR set a quota of 200 wolves for this first season, which runs concurrently with the deer rifle-hunting season. The opening weekend harvest is in line with the agency’s expectations, said DNR wolf expert Dan Stark.

“Typically about 50 percent of the harvest occurs the first weekend, and that’s when most of the hunters are out there,” Stark said. “We aren’t going to know exactly until the end of the season, but it’s likely to track that pattern.”

The number of wolves killed so far in Minnesota is higher than at the beginning of other states’ hunts, Stark said. He also said the agency will survey hunters about their methods and how long they hunted. That information will be used to make any needed changes to next year’s hunt.

At the end of Monday, the DNR closed the east-central wolf hunting zone around Lake Mille Lacs where eight of the zone’s allotted nine wolves were killed over the weekend. Hunters will be able to kill another 200 wolves during a second season beginning at the end of the November. That season will include trappers as well as hunters.

Fewer than 100 Wild Red Wolves Remain in the world

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission recently approved a temporary state rule that allows the hunting of coyotes at night using spotlights, including in the area inhabited by the only wild population of red wolves, one of the world’s most endangered animals.

Take action now! Sign our petition calling on the commission to halt all coyote hunting — day or night — within the red wolf recovery area.

Red wolves once roamed most of the Southeastern United States, but harsh predator control programs and habitat loss resulted in their near elimination — and in 1980 red wolves were declared extinct in the wild.

After a small population of captive red wolves was reintroduced into the eastern part of North Carolina, the species slowly began to repopulate and today about 100 red wolves have regained a fragile foothold in the wild.

Red wolves and coyotes are similar in size, coats and coloring, so red wolves are frequently mistaken for coyotes, even in daylight. In nighttime conditions it is nearly impossible to tell them apart.

Please take this urgent action today!

At least two red wolves have already been killed within the eastern North Carolina area designated for red wolf recovery. Defenders of Wildlife has joined two other conservation organizations to file suit in the Superior Court of Wake County, North Carolina to prevent nighttime coyote hunting throughout North Carolina, including within the red wolf recovery area.

The groups have also put the North Carolina Wildlife Commission on notice that we will seek a federal enforcement action unless it stops all coyote hunting — daytime or nighttime — in the area where these critically endangered wolves live.

While it might sound dangerous, it’s a roaring success with customers from as far away as Iceland lining up and paying $200 for just 30 minutes to cuddle, bottle feed and swim with Tony the tiger – a 6-week old cub.

“It’s kind of a limited time that we can do it in Florida. You can only interact with the tiger until they’re 40 pounds,” said Randy Stearns, head animal trainer and president of Wild Things.

When full grown, Tony could tip the scales at more than 1,000 pounds. But for now, Tony can be yours to play with at Wild Things.

“I never thought I’d get to touch one, much less swim with one,” said Bertha Cruz, who described her time with Tony as exciting.

Swimming with potentially wild and dangerous animals seems to be trendy at the moment. At Arizona’s Out of Africa Park, fully grown tigers play in the water alongside their trainers much to the delight of fans looking on behind gated fences.

In Tampa Bay, Bob Barrett began a business that had him bring alligators to children’s birthday parties.

Barrett runs The Alligator Attraction of Madeira Beach, Fla., where visitors can pay to hold and feed rescued baby gators. He says the inspiration for his party idea came when business was sluggish.

“It just took off like wildfire,” Barrett told ABC News in September. “Everybody loves having the gator pool parties.”

The state’s Fish and Wildlife Commission deemed it illegal and shut down the operation last week. Many animal rights activists say it was the right thing to do.

“You should never have close human contact with animals, especially actual petting of wild animals. They belong in the wild and people should not get in the habit of being in close contact with them,” said Adam Roberts, executive vice president of Born Free USA.

Bear Fatally Shot After Being Injured by Car On Vanderbilt

Police say they shot and killed a bear cub that was hit by a car as it tried to cross Vanderbilt Hill Road Wednesday morning.

The bear was still alive when police arrived on scene a little after 6:34 a.m. when the call came in, but it was “gravely injured,” said Lt. David Campbell, a spokesman for the Juneau Police Department.

“If an animal is suffering, and it’s a wild animal, then in order to ease the suffering of the animal we’ll put it down,” Campbell said in a phone interview.

The bear was killed at about 7 a.m. An official from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game recovered the bear’s body a few minutes later.

It was not immediately known what type of vehicle hit the bear, or the cause of the accident. The crash was reported to police by the person driving the vehicle, and the motorist’s identity was not released.

Neil Barten, a Fish and Game Wildlife Management Coordinator who retrieved the bear’s body, said JPD did the right thing by killing the bear by gunshot.

Barten speculated the bear had broken its back or crushed its pelvis because it was unable to walk.

“The poor thing was on the road, and it was trying to crawl,” he said.

Barten said it was a male black bear cub that was brownish in colour. He estimated it weighed 75 pounds and was less than a year old.

Fish and Game has received reports that a female black bear and her three cubs — two of which were black and one that was brown — have been in the area.

Barten speculated that the brown cub was straggling behind while following its mother and siblings crossing the street when it was hit by the car.

As Barten was loading the cub’s remains into the back of his pickup truck, he said the mother and her two remaining cubs re-crossed the street and scurried back toward the hillside above Twin Lakes.

“It’s just kind of unfortunate because they were getting so close to getting to bed for the winter,” Barton said, adding that bear sightings in town will drop off in the next two weeks as the bears begin to hibernate.

Barten said about four to five bears are hit on the road each year in Juneau.
