Redwood City man pleads no contest to torturing, killing family puppy

“WTF…this guy was already on psychiatric drugs…on probation…being treated for a mental illness. The girlfriend must have known, because she was scared of him, I just hope she didn’t leave him in charge of her daughter?? Don’t the Doctors who know these people are sick, have a duty to ensure they are not a threat to others & keep an eye on those that are a threat to society? Apparently not! He is a dangerous man, the kind that enjoys torturing a little puppy, to the point of death; in front of a minor! This sick bastard should never be let out to repeat this type of thing. Bet you in 5 years time his name comes up again for doing something heinous!! Yet another case for an “Animal Abuse Register”!

A Redwood City man accused of torturing and killing a puppy in front of his young daughter has pleaded no contest to animal abuse and child endangerment charges, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

On Friday, 32-year-old Alan Benjamin Velete was sentenced to two years in jail, in addition to a year in a residential rehabilitation treatment center, for the cruel acts which left his family’s puppy dead. In exchange for Friday’s plea, Alan Benjamin Velete, 32, won’t receive more than three years in prison. He also pleaded no contest to violating his probation for a 2011 felony assault conviction.

He was arrested Jan. 9 on charges that stem from a pattern of violence over several weeks against his family’s terrier puppy, named “Lucky,” that ended with the 4-month-old dog’s death, according to the district attorney’s office.

The abuse began after Velete and his daughter moved into the Redwood City apartment of his girlfriend’s mother in early December. The man became incensed after the puppy defecated on the floor and over several weeks he tortured the animal, including punching and kicking it, spraying household cleaner in its eyes, putting it in a duffel bag that was hung in a shower for hours, taping its mouth closed and feeding it his psychiatric drugs, according to the district attorney’s office. Much of the harm was done in front of his daughter.

His girlfriend and her mother later said they were too terrified of Velete to contact law enforcement, according to prosecutors. But after Velete killed the puppy, the mother anonymously called police.

Velete’s defense attorney, Naresh Rajan, said his client was being treated for mental illness at the time of the abuse and was under a lot of stress, and he has since “expressed all kinds of remorse” for his actions. While in county jail, he’s been receiving help through a counseling program.

“It’s horrible, it’s a 4-month old puppy,” Rajan said. “There’s no excuse, but he wasn’t thinking with a normal person’s mind.” ” Then why was he allowed into society???”

Michael David Parker, 45, was arrested Friday on suspicion of animal cruelty after little Cow Cow was found lifeless in a back alley in Hawthorne. Police released a disturbing surveillance video that they say shows Parker driving his sedan straight over the helpless pooch, and then zooming away.

Viewer Discretion Strongly Advised

A southern California man intentionally mowed down his pint-sized pet Chihuahua using his Nissan Maxima — and the heartless act was caught by two surveillance cameras, police said Monday.

Michael David Parker, 45, was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony animal cruelty after the precious pooch, named Cow Cow, was found lifeless in a back alley in Hawthorne, Calif.

Michael David Parker, 45, of Hawthorne, Calif., was arrested Friday on suspicion of animal cruelty after his pet Chihuahua, Cow Cow, was found dead in a back alley.

In the disturbing surveillance video released by police, Parker is seen driving his four-door sedan into the alley on Dec. 28, getting out of his vehicle, opening and closing the trunk and then climbing back into the car.

Seconds later, Cow Cow scurries out from behind the vehicle and darts in front of it.

Parker then backs up and points the car straight at the helpless hound. He guns the engine and zooms over the dog without stopping.

Video showing the back of the car shows 5-year-old Cow Cow writhing on the road until he turns motionless.

Police say Parker (pictured) admits he was in the alley that afternoon but claims he didn’t mean to harm Cow Cow.

‘It’s shocking,’ Hawthorne Police Lt. Scott Swain told the Daily News. ‘You never expect to see a little animal like that run over and left there to die.’

“It’s shocking. You never expect to see a little animal like that run over and left there to die without the driver even looking back,” Hawthorne Police Lt. Scott Swain told the Daily News.

EVIL Michael David Parker

“It wasn’t an accident. He purposefully did it.”

Lt. Swain said Parker admits he was in the alley that afternoon but claims he didn’t mean to harm the defenceless dog.

The dog had been staying with a neutral third-party after Parker and his wife recently split up, he said.

“There’s not indication it was tied to a domestic dispute,” Lt. Swain said Monday.

“We spoke to the wife, and she didn’t know it had happened. She didn’t give any indication it might have been payback.”

Parker posted $20,000 bail and was ordered back to court for arraignment on March 25.

POSTED: 01/06/14, UPDATED: 2 DAYS AGO By Larry Altman -larry.altman@langnews.com @larryaltman on Twitter

In a disturbing crime caught entirely on video, a 45-year-old man purposely drove over his pet Chihuahua, speeding away as the bloodied dog convulsed and died in a Hawthorne alley, police said Monday.

SICK POS!!!!

Michael David Parker, 45, of Hawthorne was arrested Friday on suspicion of animal cruelty. He was released from jail after posting $20,000 bail, Hawthorne police Lt. Scott Swain said.

“It’s a little poor defenceless dog and the guy just runs right over it and leaves and doesn’t offer any help,” Swain said.

Parker admitted to police that he’s in the video, but told detectives it was an accident. The shocking video, however, seems to suggest otherwise.

“You can see him swerving toward the dog,” Swain said.

Parker, the facilities manager at the Hustler Casino in Gardena, did not return a message left at his office. A friend of Parker’s estranged wife, Olga Parker, told the Daily Breeze that the killing stemmed from a bitter divorce. The couple’s two dogs, Cow Cow and Lucky, lived at the couple’s otherwise vacant house on First Street in San Pedro. Olga Parker stopped by every day to feed them. Now that Cow Cow has been found dead, Olga Parker is concerned about Lucky, who is missing.

“She is so distraught right now,” the friend said. “He knew that Olga loved these dogs desperately.”

Police and animal control officers began an investigation Thursday when a resident reported the dead animal in an alley off El Segundo Boulevard and Doty Avenue. The dog had been dead for several days, so someone had placed it in a plastic bag, Swain said.

The resident went to police after reviewing surveillance video focused on the alley. The video shows a man pulling into the alley on Dec. 28 and, after a couple of minutes, running over the dog, Swain said.

“The resident was shocked,” Swain said. “I went over there with a detective Friday morning. I watched it and you are horrified.”

The video shows the man get out of his car and open the trunk. He then gets back into his car. The male dog, 5-1/2-year-old Cow Cow, which had presumably been in the trunk, runs forward and stops in the center of the alley.

Parker backs his vehicle up, and then appears to accelerate rapidly, steering directly toward the dog,” Swain said. “Cow Cow is run completely over.”

A second video shot from the rear of the car shows the dog writhing on the ground until it dies.

“It’s gruesome,” Swain said. “It starts bleeding, his little back leg twitching.”

Police said the motive for the crime was unknown, even though Parker and his wife are estranged.

“There’s no indication that’s it, ‘I’m angry at you. That’s why I’m doing that,’ ” Swain said. “It is both of their dogs. So we don’t have a motive. He was arrested and he didn’t want to go into details. He didn’t indicate why he did it.”

But Parker’s estranged wife’s friend, who asked to remain anonymous for his own protection, said Parker became irate Dec. 28 when she refused to sign their San Pedro house over to him.

“He made threats against her and her family,” the friend said. “He said, ‘You are going to sign these documents or else.’ ”

Olga Parker filed for divorce in the summer of 2011 following 16 years of marriage. The couple have three children — two boys ages 15 and 12, and a 6-year-old daughter. Parker has since had a child with a new girlfriend.

The divorce settlement has slowly been making its way through family court. The friend said cutbacks in the Superior Court system in Los Angeles County have slowed the process.

Parker and his estranged wife both moved out of their San Pedro residence, but Parker wants to take control of it, the wife’s friend said.

“This guy is just a piece of work,” the friend said. “He believes he is above the law because of his position with Larry Flynt.”

Flynt, a famous publisher of pornographic magazines, owns the Hustler Casino where Parker works.

The friend described the missing dog, Lucky, as a black mutt, with a white underside.

Olga Parker has told her children that the dogs are gone and that one was killed. One child told his mother he did not believe his father would do such a thing, the friend said.

Parker is scheduled for arraignment March 25 at the Airport courthouse in Del Aire.

“This has gone too far,” the friend said. “If this guy doesn’t go to jail for this, there is no justice.”

UPDATE: Justice, The Dog Set On Fire, Receives No Justice

Comments Off on UPDATE: Justice, The Dog Set On Fire, Receives No Justice

Update August 21, 2013 10:35 a.m:Since the District Attorney‘s office is considering an appeal, the petition asking for the maximum sentence (link is below) has been reopened for signatures.

In April, 2012, an 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.Darius Ewing poured lighter fluid on a four-month-old puppy, then flicked a lit cigarette at him. The police report stated that a group of people watched and laughed as Ewing threw his lit cigarette at the dog.

Darius Ewing

The Labrador puppy suffered from third degree burns on more than 70 percent of his body. His poor little body could not handle it, and ten days after being set on fire, the puppy died.

The puppy was named “Justice” by his rescuers, DFW Rescue Me, since that is what they hoped he would get.

But that does not seem to be the case.

The man who lit Justice on fire, Darius Ewing, pleaded guilty to one count of felony animal cruelty. Ewing entered a plea on Tuesday, agreeing to a five-year sentence. The judge on the case, Larry Mitchell, reduced his sentence to two years. WFFA.com reports that the judge “lowered it to two years, saying prosecutors failed to prove that a ‘deadly weapon’ was used.”

Three others also pleaded guilty to one count each of felony animal cruelty. Darius Carey, 25, was sentenced to two years in jail. Richard Valentine, 25, and Adrian Ayers, 21, each received 15 months in jail.

Ayers, Carey, Ewing

In Texas, State Jail Felonies are punishable with a fine of up to $10,000 and/or a jail sentence of up to 10 years.

Jonnie England of the Texas Humane Alliance says all who were present for sentencing in the courtroom were shocked. “There was just no justice for Justice here today,” England said.

Prosecutors are considering an appeal for Ewing’s case.

Animal advocate group Hand4Paws wrote a petition asking that Darius Ewing receive the maximum sentence. The petition received over 37,000 signatures. The petition was sent to the judge on the case, Larry Mitchell.

Convicted Sex Offender Sentenced: Up To 15 Years In Prison For BESTIALITY

Comments Off on Convicted Sex Offender Sentenced: Up To 15 Years In Prison For BESTIALITY

“At last, a Judge who actually cares enough about animals, to use the powers given to him; to encaserate this sick bxxxxxd!! Lets just hope Judge Timothy Hicks, uses his  influence & balls, to put this depraved repugnant pig, who is a fourth time offender; behind bars for the maximum number of years possible! This is yet another case which points out the obvious…these rancorous reprobates, can’t be cured, don’t want to be cured & will re-offended; given the opportunity…so judges should be making sure these repulsive sickos are not given the convenience to re-offend so easily!!

Animals do not have a voice, they cannot give consent before a human has sex with them; therefore it is rape! Raping an animal is yet another valid reason, why every state & city should be setting up Animal Abuse Registers! Just as Peodophile Registers are used, police can cross reference names & keep tabs on animal rapists, abusers etc. Animal charities such as the ASPCA, RSPCA etc. can use the Register to check names of job applicants or before adopting out animals. History has proven many times, that some offenders start a life of crime by abusing or raping animals, then turn predator to human victims. So…FFS…what more proof do the powers that be need; before they get Animal Abuse Registers implemented ASAP??

  • Kurtis Peterson, 37, was caught by a friend having sex with a blue heeler and a pit bull in April and June 2012
  • Told a detective he was ‘just playing’ with blue heeler when he became aroused
  • Peterson was convicted in 1996 of criminal sexual conduct

A convicted sex offender from Michigan has been sentenced to one-to-15 years in a state prison for repeatedly having sex with dogs

Mental case: Both the judge and Peterson’s attorney have agreed that the 37-year-old has serious mental issues, but he was sane during the incidents and competent to stand trial Crime against nature: Kurtis Peterson, 37, was sentenced to one to 15 years in state prison for repeatedly having sex with dogs

Kurtis Peterson learned his fate on Monday when Judge Timothy Hicks went above state sentencing guidelines to keep the repeat offender in a controlled environment to prevent him from re-offending.

Under state guidelines, Peterson would have been sentenced to time in a county jail and probation, but because he had already served 321 days behind bars, Peterson would have been released almost immediately.

Silent victims

The 37-year-old Muskegon man pleaded no contest last March to ‘the abominable and detestable crime against nature,’ also known as sodomy or bestiality, and charged as a fourth-time habitual offender.

Peterson’s attorney, Belinda Barbier, said in court that her client has serious mental health issues that require long-term counseling, and the judge agreed that the defendant has ‘pretty low cognitive ability.’

However, experts at the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry earlier examined Peterson and determined that he was sane while sexually abusing the animals, and he was competent to stand trial.

The first incident involving Peterson took place April 2010 at his apartment at 230 Amity Avenue in Muskegon when he was caught kneeling naked behind his blue heeler on his bed, having sex with the pet, according to testimony by an eyewitness cited by MLive.com.

In early June, the same witness said she walked in on a naked Peterson apparently having sex with a white pit bull on the floor of his living room. The 37-year-old man was arrested a short time after the second incident.

Silent victims

Testifying at a preliminary hearing about the April incident, the witness, Joyce Yeaw, said Peterson told her he was ‘just hugging his dog,‘ but the woman said it looked like a lot more than an embrace between an owner and his pooch.

Yeaw testified that she and a friend stopped by Peterson’s home to return car keys they had borrowed from his roommate when they caught him in the act. She said she called 911, but no arrest was made until June.

‘He was having sex with the dog,’ Yeaw said in court at the time. ‘It was disgusting.

Muskegon police detective Peter Boterenbrood, who interviewed Peterson after the June incident, said that Peterson told him he was ‘just playing with the dog’ in April, but he became sexually aroused from accidental contact with the animal’s rear.

Court records show that Peterson was convicted of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in 1996 in Allegan County, and in 2010 for carrying a concealed weapon and making a false report of a felony.

Authorities: Telford Man Sparked Other Animal Welfare Concerns

Comments Off on Authorities: Telford Man Sparked Other Animal Welfare Concerns

A Telford man facing a spate of animal cruelty and weapons charges in connection with his arrest last month has been on animal welfare authorities’ radar for nearly two years, according to Tracie Graham — a Humane Society police officer and shelter manager with the Montgomery County SPCA.

Graham said that since late 2011, she and other Humane Society officials have been investigating 52-year-old Earl C. Heitz III, of the 100 block of Forrest Road, on suspicion of animal cruelty and failure to provide proper care for animals.

Heitz was arrested at his home by Franconia Township police on March 21 and arraigned on 27 charges — including 21 counts of cruelty to animals and three counts of felony illegal firearm possession — after a report of an injured goat led officers to his residence.

MCSPCA seized 24 animals from the property, “which are being housed and cared for,” said Graham, who — citing the ongoing nature of the case — did not disclose the medical condition of any of the animals. She said that the removed animals included 11 puppies, three chinchillas, two goats, two roosters, two guinea fowl, two parrots, one iguana and one cat.
On Wednesday, Heitz had his preliminary hearing before District Judge Kenneth Deatelhauser of Souderton continued for a second time. Court personnel did not provide a reason for the continuance. Heitz remains free after posting $50,000 bail on March 22.

“This is not the first time there’s been a problem like this with (Heitz),” according to Graham. She said that on Feb. 19, she filed four non-traffic summary citations for animal cruelty against Heitz with District Judge Catherine Hummel-Fried of Red Hill. That was in regard to 40 animals — including goats, horses and cattleHeitz allegedly keeps on an Upper Salford property that’s owned by someone else, said Graham, adding that those animals have not yet been seized from the property.

“We are going to be requesting forfeiture of all of the animals,” she said.

Court records show that the four citations are in the process of being transferred from Hummel-Fried’s court — Graham explained that she is trying to have them consolidated into Heitz’s criminal case in connection with his March arrest.

According to police, just after 1 p.m. on March 21, officers were dispatched to Heitz’s property after receiving a tip that a goat on a nearby road had been struck by a vehicle and appeared to have a broken jaw, and that several dogs were running up and down Heitz’s driveway.

When officers approached the house to locate the homeowner, the criminal complaint states, they found the front door wide open, announced their presence but got no response and then, “not knowing if the homeowner was injured or incapacitated,” entered the residence for a well-being check.

Inside, officers found “deplorable conditions,” according to the affidavit: Animal feces in every part of the home, a dead fish on the floor of an upstairs bedroom and a number of live animals both inside and outside the home, including puppies, goats, chickens, chinchillas and birds. Police said they also found three .22 caliber rifles inside the house, which authorities took for safekeeping since the house was open “and anyone would have access to the firearms.”

The MCSPCA and Humane Society then responded to the scene and made the decision to take the 24 animals into protective custody, the complaint states, and an official from Franconia Township was also called in to inspect the property. The township made the determination to condemn the property and posted an official notice to that effect on the front door of the house that afternoon.

Police said that as they were leaving the property, Heitz returned and asked what was going on. According to the affidavit, Heitz was advised that authorities were called to the property because of the goat that had been injured, that the MCSPCA had taken his animals, that the township had condemned the property and he was not permitted inside the house and that he needed to leave the property immediately.

Shortly after 5 p.m. that same day, police received a call that someone was at the house and there were dogs running on the property, court papers state, and while officers were en route back to the property, they learned from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office that Heitz was convicted of a felony drug charge in 1992 and thus was prohibited from possessing firearms. Police said they were advised by an assistant district attorney to make an arrest based on that information.

Upon arrival, Franconia police — observing that the township’s condemned property notice had been removed from the front door — knocked on the door, and when Heitz came to the door he was taken into custody without incident.

A new date for Heitz’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled, court records show.

According to information posted online by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Heitz’s Forrest Road property is listed for Sheriff’s Sale on May 29.

A Tiger, a Truck Stop And A Pitched Legal Battle

Comments Off on A Tiger, a Truck Stop And A Pitched Legal Battle

“Please let me point out, that at no time, have I ever said Tony is abused or cruelly treated. My issue & that of most advocates for Tony, is simply his living enclosure & it’s site at the truck stop. Please see the videos & sign the petition at the end of this post…thank you!”

GROSSE TETE, La. — The American truck stop is a promise of certain reliable’s  a shower, a warm meal, some small talk at the counter, a 24/7 source of diesel, beef jerky and cigarettes

Tony, a Bengal-Siberian tiger, is kept on the premises at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, La. Web sites have been created urging Tony’s removal, letters have been written, and public officials have been lobbied

Tony, a Bengal-Siberian tiger, is kept on the premises at the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, La. Web sites have been created urging Tony’s removal, letters have been written, and public officials have been lobbied

The truck stop here just west of Baton Rouge offers all those things, but as most southern Louisianians know, it has another less standard feature: a 550-pound Bengal-Siberian tiger.

Tony is only the latest in a line of tigers to live here. Thirteen cubs were born at the truck stop, and several adult tigers brought in, including a white tiger named Salena who died of pancreatic cancer in the early 2000s and is now stuffed and sitting in the Tiger Cafe atop the salad bar.

Tony, who is 12 years old, spends his days draped languidly on top of his cinder-block den or pacing around the grass in his 40-foot-by-80-foot caged enclosure on one side of the parking lot, seemingly as unriveted by the truckers as they are by him. “The enclosure gates have been filmed open many times, but Tony often prefers to paces back & forth in his concrete enclosure. His enclosure may be large for a tiger living in a yard, but size is nothing…it’s what’s in it that makes all the difference. There is nothing for Tony to do nor any natural foliage to make it appear more like his natural habitat. Tony does not have a swimming pool, although Mr. Sandlin has been quoted several times, saying it is a pool; it’s a horse feed trough or something similar. Irrelevant of what it is, it’s way too small for Tony to sit in never mind swim; In all the years I have been advocating for Tony’s move, i have never once seen him dip so much as a toe in that water trough & I’ll bet nobody can find any evidence of him being in it (apart from possibly when he was a young cub)!”

He also appears unmoved by his role at the centre  of a costly and complicated legal dispute, pitting claims of property rights against animal rights and prompting regular news reports about his impending removal. The legal fight has gone on for years. Tony remains.

“It’s become more of a liability than an asset,” said Michael Sandlin, 50, who has run the truck stop for the past 25 years. “But it’s not the money. It’s the principle.

The Tiger Truck Stop has long been a thorn in the paw of animal rights organizations and many animal lovers generally. Web sites have been created urging Tony’s removal, letters have been written, public officials lobbied. Robert Barham, the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, described “cases of mail from every state and a host of foreign countries.” Still, he said, state veterinarians sent to inspect Tony invariably returned with reports of good health. “Good, I’m glad some vets have seen him, but was it a routine check or did he have bloods, scans etc. to check his internal organs are not being effected by the air born fumes? I would sure like to see a copy of that report!”

Matthew Liebman, a lawyer for the Animal Legal Defense Fund, based in California, acknowledged that Tony’s situation was not the worst he had ever seen, though he and others worry about the tiger’s constant exposure to exhaust and diesel fumes.

“The bottom line for us is that tigers don’t belong in truck stops,” Mr. Liebman said. “I think it reflects a pretty commodified, objectifying view of animals that we don’t support — that they are objects of entertainment, that they are gimmicks to sell gasoline.

In 2006, the state passed a law that put limits on “big exotic cat” possession, but allowed anyone who owned such a cat at the time to be grandfathered in. Mr. Sandlin, who had kept tigers here for nearly two decades, was granted a permit for Tony. But in a 2011 trial, lawyers for the animal defense fund showed that a parish law that was on the books in 2006 prohibited keeping exotic animals and argued that he should not have been exempted from the new law. The judge agreed and ordered Mr. Sandlin’s state permit revoked.

Mr. Sandlin, who still has a federal permit, has appealed the decision, and has also filed a separate lawsuit arguing that the state law itself is unconstitutional because it is applied unevenly and leaves too much discretion to enforcement officials.

Still, he has been looking for a retirement home for Tony. This search generated its own outcry when he said he was leaning toward a wildlife park in Oklahoma owned by a man who calls himself Joe Exotic, but whose real name is Joe Schreibvogel.

Mr. Schreibvogel’s park has attracted a good deal of controversy itself and is being investigated by federal officials for 23 tiger cub deaths. Although this was found to be tainted formulae.  But Mr. Sandlin said he believed that it provided good care, and did not trust others to know what was good for Tony. “Now with Joe Exotic becoming bankrupt, how will this effect Tony, will Mr Sandlin still prefer to move him their, will he still be able to move him their or will he choose an accredited sanctuary; which Tony deserves. Joe Exotic has been asking for donations to build Tony an enclosure, for some time now. He has been quoted as saying, it would be off the usual track visitors take, so Tony can be private! Yet Mr. Sandlin say’s Tony is used to noise??? I have just found the same article on Joe Exotics new web page; the name of the park has change to The Garold Wayne interactive Zoological Park:-http://www.gwpark.org/Tony-The-Tiger.php

“He’s used to the noise from the Interstate and the trucks,” Mr. Sandlin said. “He’s used to people coming up here and looking at him.”

“To tear him away from this,” he said, breaking off, then added, “I think it would be very cruel because that’s what he’s used to.”

Mr. Sandlin and his opponents see the world rather differently. The phrase “animal rights activist,” particularly if it means someone who would ban the private ownership of exotic animals, is to Mr. Sandlin a disparagement on its face. (A T-shirt for sale in the truck stop store reads “Animal Rights Activists Taste Like Chicken.”)

But he takes no offence when critics deride him as a purveyor of roadside entertainment. He considers himself an ally of the travelling circuses that occasionally stop here, and he allows the elephants to graze out back. “Why when he has plenty land at the back, did he build the enclosure at the front; if it was not for monetary gain?”

The idea of a tiger truck stop had been his father’s, but opening one here seemed particularly apt given that the mascot of nearby Louisiana State University is a tiger. (The university keeps its own tiger, Mike VI, in an enclosure next to the football stadium.) “Yes, & you want to see his enclosure in fact I will post a video of it at the bottom so you can see the difference!”

So in 1988, Mr. Sandlin arrived from Houston with Toby and Rainbow, he a mostly Bengal mix, she a pure-bred Siberian. In 2000, after the sale of a tiger truck stop owned by Mr. Sandlin’s father in West Texas, Toby and Rainbow were joined by Tony and Salena. “But didn’t Toby & Rainbow end up at a tiger sanctuary?”

In the ensuing years, the United States Department of Agriculture issued several citations to the truck stop, among other things for allowing cubs to run loose around the office. Mr. Sandlin paid a fine and sold all the tigers but Tony.

About 35 people work at the truck stop, including a sister of Michael Sandlin’s; a brother-in-law; a niece; a nephew; Mr. Sandlin’s mother, Virginia, who handles billing; and his domestic partner of 26 years, Scott Holbrook, who is the vice president of the truck stop as well as the video poker manager. “No mention of the person that cares for Tony, cleans his enclosure or feeds him then?”

There is also a middle-aged man named Ray Jackson, who buses tables at the restaurant and who will sing on command. Seeing him outside the Tiger Cafe, Mr. Sandlin said the word and Mr. Jackson stopped immediately and sang “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross.”

“People get a kick out of that,” Mr. Sandlin said.

For now, there is the wait for a ruling. An immediate change is unlikely even then, but as a breed, the tiger truck stop’s days may be numbered.

There are certainly some substandard roadside zoos,” Mr. Liebman said. “But this is the only truck stop tiger I know of.”

UPDATE (15) Aug 11, 2011: Mike VI, the LSU Bengal Tiger Mascot’s HABITAT

My dear friend Cloversweed has around 40 videos of Tony, taken personally with no editing. What you see is what you get. Check out the ones that show no water in the so called pool, & the one with a live kitten sat in Tony’s feed area…Cloversweed has captured a lot of evidence to suggest that  a truck stop is not  the right place for a Tiger to live. Federal Courts Dismiss Activists’ ‘ALDF’ Anti-Foie Gras Suit

Comments Off on Federal Courts Dismiss Activists’ ‘ALDF’ Anti-Foie Gras Suit

“How can anyone think, shoving a gavage (pipe or tube) down the esophagus, of geese or ducks then force feeding them with, typically, corn boiled with fat (to facilitate ingestion) so the birds liver becomes over enlarged; so it can then be eaten as a delicacy… is totally beyond me! Of course it’s bloody cruel & barbaric, no other animal that I can think of is force fed via a tube to make any part of their body fatter for human consumption. Yes animals are given extra grain & even growth hormones but they are not force fed it via a bloody pipe…it’s savage & uncalled for; we kill enough animals to meet the demand for meat or other animal body parts! Do we really have to  force feed a bird in constant chronic pain from the tube…just for a delicacy?? What will they come up with next, pickled eyeballs, coated in vinegar daily, to get that perfect crunch?? One could say, this is almost as bad as bear bile being taken from a bear!!

Goose being force-fed so humans can dine on their enlarged livers!!

“Look at the disgusting filthy gavage (pipe) & other equipment; there is no wonder so many birds die of disease. While force feeding is required to meet the French legal definition of “foie gras”, producers outside France do not always force feed birds in order to produce fattened livers that they consider to be foie gras, instead allowing them to eat freely, termed ad libitum. Interest in alternative production methods has grown recently due to ethical concerns in gavage-based foie gras production. Such livers are alternatively termed fatty goose liver, ethical foie gras, or humane foie gras.” Source-Wikipedia

“During feeding, efforts are made to avoid damaging the bird’s esophagus, which could cause injury or death, although researchers have found evidence of inflammation of the walls of the proventriculus after the first session of force-feeding. There is also indication of inflammation of the esophagus in the later stages of fattening. Several studies have also demonstrated that mortality rates can be significantly elevated during the gavage period.”Source Wikipedia

The Animal Legal Defense Fund tried to sue the government to declare force-fed foie gras illegal, and federal courts shut it downInside Scoop SF reports that a lawsuit between the ALDF and the U.S. Department of Agriculture was dismissed on Friday. “Please click on the links to read more!”

The ALDF (the same anti-foie group that sued Napa restaurant La Toque) had argued that foie gras is “a diseased product unfit for human consumption,” and asked the court to step in and order the USDA to “remove foie gras from the American food supply.”

In the ruling (warning: PDF), U.S. District Judge Otis Wright explains his decision to dismiss the case:Plaintiffs‘ voluminous submission of technical papers and data supports the Court’s view that Plaintiffs are challenging a scientific conclusion and not a legal one … this is an issue falling squarely under the USDA’s discretion by law.”

Although selling and producing foie gras is still illegal in California, the ALDF is not entitled to judicial review on this case so, for now, the rest of the country can rest easily knowing their foie is safe. “For those who partake in this delicacy…I hope it fxxxxg chokes you!”
