A large shark was killed off the west Australian coast on Sunday, the first under a contentious new state government culling policy aimed at curbing fatal shark attacks.
The Western Australia government on Saturday began placing baited hooks on drum lines off popular beaches in the state capital Perth and to the south to kill white, bull and tiger sharks over 10ft long.
The policy is a response to seven fatal shark attacks in Australia’s southwest in three years.
Government spokesman Simon Beaumont said the first shark was killed by a government-contracted commercial fisherman on Sunday morning off Castle Rock near the town of Dunsborough, 155 miles south of Perth.
The shark was longer than three meters (10 feet) and was one of the three targeted species. Beaumont would not say which of the three species it was.
Once the fisherman had confirmed with fishing authorities that the shark was the required species and size, he shot it and dumped the carcass at sea, Beaumont said.
The policy has divided the community since it was announced several weeks ago and led to thousands of people demonstrating on Perth beaches against the shark cull.
Activists have threatened to sabotage the drum lines and threatened one fisherman who had accepted a government contract to catch sharks off Perth. He pulled out, citing the threats.

The federal government last week gave state authorities a special exemption from environmental laws to kill white sharks, a protected species.
Environmentalists argue that there is no evidence that the cull will reduce shark attacks. They argue it could even increase the shark danger by giving water users a false sense of security.
‘To think that we’re wasting this opportunity to tag and to find out more about these creatures, that we’re just going to slaughter them and dump them – it’s just such a waste of life,’ Rae Threnoworth, member of marine conservation group Sea Shepherd, told Ten Network television.
State Premier Colin Barnett was heckled by members of the public over the shark’s death as he officiated at a citizenship ceremony in Perth on Sunday.
‘I get no pleasure out of seeing sharks killed,’ Barnett told reporters. ‘But I have an overriding responsibility to protect the people of Western Australia. That’s what I’m doing.’

A tragic case of mistaken identity has left the dog who belongs to the owner of a former Veterans building in Vallejo, Calif., dead, reported Wednesday’sMercury News.

The dog, a senior golden retriever, belonged to 83-year-old Ed Boydston, who just bought the building which is located on Alabama Street.
Boydston, a Korean War veteran, was at the newly purchased building in the early evening last Friday; while there, someone phoned the police to report suspicious activity.
Responding police entered the building and called out to announce their presence; Boydston did not hear them, but his dog, “Tiger,” did, and when he approached, he was shot one time.
Boydston told Mercury News what he said to the officer:
I said, ‘Don’t shoot my dog, and I heard very clearly, ‘I just did,’
I kind of feel like the dog tripped a shot for me. It could have been me that was shot. I was 10-12 feet away.”
The officer’s shot to Tiger proved to be fatal; Tiger, described as “sweet,” had been Boydston’s companion for the last eight years.
Following the death of his companion, Boydston said:
I guess they were justified in doing it,
I don’t know about the law, but I guess they had justified rights. Someone reported a burglary.”

Hatem Yavuz from Turkey buys the pelts of every one of the 86,000 seal pups that are slaughtered every year in Namibia.
Every year in Namibia, 86,000 Cape Fur Seal pups are butchered to death and only one man has the contract to turn their fur into so-called fashionable apparel. The Turkish and Australia based company Hatem Yavuz named after the owner Hatem Yavuz controls roughly 60 percent of the world’s seal market and processes 130,000 seal pelts every year in his Istanbul factory. Yavuz also has a hand in the Canadian seal market and claims to be proud of what he does. In an interview that spurred a flurry of hate mail, Yavuz told 7 News in Australia that “it’s a job. If I don’t do it, someone else is going to do it.” He is called the King of Seal Killers.
Illegal Seal Killing
Green Prophet recently caught up with Pat Dickens, founder of the Seals of Nam, a non-profit organization that has been campaigning to end Namibia’s annual seal cull on the Cape Cross Seal Reserve. A popular tourist attraction, every year between July and November the sands of the reserve are stained pink from the blood of seal pups as young as seven months old.
Men with clubs and picks enter the seal colony early in the morning. The traumatized animals squeal and run away, often regurgitating their mother’s milk in terror. Their skulls are crushed and their throats slit. Several reports show that blows to their head often only render the animals unconscious.
These remains are cleaned up before tourists show up in what is a heavily regulated area.
Dickens has gone through all of the appropriate channels to appeal to the Namibian government to cancel its contract with Yavuz, which is valid until 2019, as it stands in direct contravention to the Animal Protection Act of 1962 that makes it unlawful to “overload, overdrive, override, ill-treat, neglect, infuriate, torture or maim or cruelly beat, kick, goad or terrify any animal.”
Boycott
He appealed to the Namibian ombudsman Adv. John Walters, which speech has since been followed up with a series of delay tactics. Several animal rights organizations have become involved and Jane Goodall and other celebrities have made public statements against this terrible practice.
Meanwhile, the Humane Society released a report which shows that the so-calledseal-cullingindustry, which only employs 81 people in Namibia, benefits theNamibian economy300 times less than live seals and eco-tourism would.
Since The Seals of Nam have not made progress “the nice way”, they have elevated the stakes of their campaign.
The activist organization recently sent a formal appeal to the world’s largest tourism fair taking place in early March, ITB Berlin, to bar Namibia’s attendance, and a series of other public protests will take place throughout the world in order to increase awareness of what has become the world’s largest seal harvest.
They have also called for a boycott of all major industries that contribute to Namibia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) including Namibia Breweries, De Beers, and Namibia Air.
Dickens, who quit a lucrative corporate career, sold his bike, and cashed in his pension to protect Namibia’s seals from the likes of Yavuz, told Green Prophet that the Wildlife Defense Society (WDS Namibia) recently announced their official support of the boycott, despite the enormous fiscal ramifications it could have for their own country.
Bloody Money
But the odds are stocked against the seals since the King of Seal Killers makes a lucrative living from his business. One seal fur coat sells for Aus $30,000 – “enough to buy a car,” he boasted in an interview with 7 News.
Cape Fur Seals are listed as a UN-CITES Endangered Appendix II species and the United States, Mexico, the European Union, and Russia have subsequently banned all seal products in protest. So many people may not like them, but do they really have to set a dog on fire to prove their dislike?

It’s absolutely sickening; especially awful when the Pitbull is a pregnant female!
Not only was the dog set on fire, but afterward was hit by a car.
This maddening sense of abuse happened right in the south Chicago suburbs on Tuesday. That was when “It’s a Pittie” (IAP) Pitbull Rescue inMonee, Illinoiswere called in. Before IAP was contacted, another animal shelter had her. She required immediate medical assistance so IAP had to wait 24 hours for the dog’s release.
The poor mother-to-be had burns over 25% of her body. Due to the car accident, Petunia, as the dog is being referred to, also has internal injuries.
Pregnant Pit Bull Set On Fire
Why someone would have the audacity to do this in the first place is awful, but considering that the female dog’s milk has come in, it is extremely horrifying because she is likely to give birth in just about a week.
The person that carried forth the abuse will most likely never be discovered. This is very unfortunate indeed! No animal or human deserves treatment like Petunia received.
Culprits like whoever committed the abuse on Petunia make sure that they remain free from indictment. They do so by removing any identification that the dog may wear and fail to have them microchipped because to the abuser, the dog is ‘dispensable!’
No mother is ever dispensable but Petunia may be too weak to care for her coming litter which is yet another concern. She is receiving hydro-therapy treatments but needs constant care so that her burnt flesh does not get infected as that could prove life threatening.
So what if you do not likePitbulls? Is that any reason whatsoever for someone to hurt them to this degree?
Shelters and rescues are filled with them. Perhaps the shelters and rescues should take in the individuals that abuse the dogs and cause them such utter pain; locking them away from harming yet another defenceless animal. It is because of those individuals that Pitbulls act the way that they do. “Yes, totally agree with locking the MF’s up & causing them intense pain!”
We need better laws. Not just laws that stipulate that Pitbulls are not allowed to live in certain areas, but laws that protect Pitbulls and other animals that are on the “hit list” from being treated with such utter disdain. Maybe if we began with the root cause, the dogs themselves would not have such a pathetic reputation and be treated to mortifyingly.
It really and truly is hard to believe that this poor dog has to go through all of this.

Congress Introduces Safeguard American Food Exports Act to End Horse Slaughter

Horses are not raised for human consumption in theUnited States and are regularly administered drugs that are expressly prohibited by federal regulations for use in food animals. While the drugs may be perfectly suitable to treat injuries in horses, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)has declared that hundreds of them—including some highly toxic to humans —are “not for use on horses intended for human consumption.” For example, a common pain reliever routinely administered to all types of horses, phenylbutazone or “bute,” is known to cause potentially fatal human diseases.
It is important not to forget the toll horse slaughter takes on families and the horses they care about. Brittany Wallace and her horse Scribbles were reunited after Omega Horse Rescue in Pennsylvania saved him from a kill pen at the New Holland Livestock Auction. There is currently no system in the United States to track medications given to horses to ensure that horse meat is safe for human consumption. A recent New York Times article highlighted the plethora of drugs used on race horses—including cobra venom and cocaine—and the resulting food safety threats. Thousands of these horses are sent to auction—and subsequently on to slaughter in Canada or Mexico—within hours or days of their last race, virtually ensuring that these toxins are in the horse meat that is sent overseas. Many substances and drugs regularly used on horses have never been tested on humans; the potential danger of ingesting these chemicals is completely unknown.
Despite opposition to horse slaughter from bipartisan leaders of New Mexico, including Governor Susana Martinez, Attorney General Gary K. King, and State Land Commissioner Ray Powell, D.V.M, theU.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced plans to process an application for inspecting horse slaughter operations at a facility in New Mexico. If the application is approved, Valley Meat Company LLC—suspended twice by the USDA in the last 1.5 years for violations of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act—will be the first facility in the United States to slaughter horses for human consumption since 2007.
AWI has long exposed the widespread cruelty and dishonesty of this industry—from inside the slaughterhouse to the backroom dealings of killer buyers misleading horse owners and now to the store shelves of European grocery stores. Against this backdrop, the federal government could now potentially spend its limited fiscal and staffing resources to open new horse slaughter plants at a time when forced spending cuts are already severely affecting animal welfare and food safety inspections for U.S. meat products.
In the midst of the public commotion over horse meat, a positive development is the introduction of legislation, the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, by Senators Mary Landrieu (D-LA) andLindsey Graham (R-SC) along with Representatives Patrick Meehan (R-PA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL). This bill would ban horse slaughter in the United States, while ensuring American horses are not exported to Canada or Mexico for the same purpose.

Please email, call or write your Representative and both Senators today and urge them to cosponsor and act immediately in support of the SAFE Act, before horse slaughter has the chance to resume on U.S. soil.

The Government’s proposed badger cull, set to go ahead last year was postponed after a sustained and comprehensive campaign that involved numerous organisations, including the League and our supporters, coming together as Team Badger.
Last year over 160,000 people also signed a Government e-petition, far exceeding the 100,000 signatures needed to be considered for a House of Commons debate, which went ahead on 25th October.
The Parliamentary vote against the badger cull was overwhelming: 147 votes to 28 votes, with the majority of MPs agreeing with scientists, animal welfare organisations and the general public, that the cull is wrong and would be ineffective on scientific, humanitarian and practical grounds.
However, the vote is not binding and the Government are still planning to resume culling this summer.
The League, our partner organisations and supporters are committed, therefore, to continue with the campaign to ensure the cull isn’t just postponed, but abandoned for good, in favour ofvaccinatingbadgers and developing an effectivebovine TB vaccine.
As part of Team Badger, the League recently submitted evidence to theEnvironment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee inquiry, which is looking into vaccination alternative to culling and is due to report later this year.
Vaccination has already been a proven success inWales, where over 1,400 badgers have already been protected against bovine TB as part of a five year programme of work to eradicate TB completely. The badger vaccination initiative in Wales reflects the constructive alternative to culling that the League, along with “Team Badger”, is calling for. It also demonstrates the co-operation that is possible between the farming industry and government in taking swift, positive and decisive action against the spread of Bovine TB.
The League, alongside our campaign partners, believes strongly that vaccination of both badgers and cattle and better husbandry are the most effective and long-term way to tackle this terrible disease. Together we successfully came together to ensure badgers had a stay of execution in 2012 and we are now working for a full and permanent pardon in 2013.
What can I do to stop the cull happening this summer?
You should contact your MP to remind them that the badger cull is set to go ahead in summer of 2013. You should ensure that they know the evidence and science against the cull and ask them to make sure they will continue to oppose the cull in 2013.
Badger cull to begin from June, Environment Secretary confirms
Conservative MPOwen Paterson said that, if successful, the cull aimed at stopping bovine tuberculosis would be rolled out across the country next year.
It has not been confirmed where this summer’s pilot culls will take place, however the National Farmers Union (NFU) said it believed they would be in Gloucestershire and Somerset.
Animal rights campaigners expressed dismay, claiming there is still no scientific evidence to support the cull and that the move is against the wishes of the British public.
Speaking to the BBC, Mr Paterson said: “We need to make sure that these two trials are carried out in a professional and scientific manner and if we prove that this works we will continue.”
The Government wants to stop the animals spreading the disease which has cost the taxpayer £500m in the last decade. That figure is expected to rise to £1bn in the next 10 years.
Adam Quinney, the vice president of the National Farmers’ Union, welcomed the decision and said they had expected the cull to go ahead this summer.
“The two licences have been issued for two areas in Gloucestershire and Somerset and they still stand.
“There have been discussions about looking at alternative areas just because it is prudent,” he said.
The cull cannot take place before then for a number of reasons, including licence restrictions and welfare concerns for badger’s caring for their young.
A spokesperson for the RSPCA said they were “deeply disappointed” with the plans to cull the animals tomorrow as there is no “real proof” that it will help either cows or badgers and called for Defra to look again at alternatives including vaccines.
They said: “The Government must think again and the RSPCA will continue to campaign against the cull until it does so.
“After this year’s postponement we had hoped that the government would finally see sense and pay attention to the vast amount of scientific research showing that a cull will be ineffective, wasteful and potentially damaging to the welfare of both farm and wild animals.
“The vaccination of both badgers and cattle along with more effective biosecurity is the only approach which addresses the welfare of both cattle and badgers and the long term livelihood of farmers.
“This announcement flies in the face of the views of a huge majority of MPs who voted against the cull as well as the majority of the British public and the overwhelming weight of scientific opinion. The RSPCA stands ready to work alongside all those seeking an alternative to this barbaric cull.”

Nature’s Child is shot in the head in front of her equine companion who had fearfully rushed into the ‘killing box’ behind his friend. While still alive, she is dragged by a tractor to the slaughter-room floor, and has her throat slit and tail cut off. In a nearby paddock a stallion is also shot in the head. Still alive, he is dragged by tractor 60 metres across gravel and concrete to the slaughter-room where he is shot again.
It is not just the killing methods that should force the closure of this knackery in Victoria. Other serious problems investigators observed included: horsesbeing beaten; being transported while injured; sick and injured horses being left untreated; and the body of one dead horse left lying in the holding yard while others stood around him.
It is clear that these men cannot be trusted to handle animals. Show you care for horses by urging authorities to shut this place down.
Nature’s Child deserved more than this
There was no happy retirement for race-winning thoroughbred Nature’s Child. Her last moments were spent in fear and terror at Laverton Knackery. No horse deserves to die this way. Help save other animals from the same fate by taking action today.

He is known to locals as Zhangzhou, and was heartbroken when his mate was killed. Butcher Xiao Wu said he frequently saw the pair playing together, and had just begun feeding them. He watched as the forlorn dog licked his friend’s face and lovingly nudged her with his nose, as if trying to wake her. He tried to hug her, and Wu could swear he was crying.

“He stayed beside her the whole day, licking her and pushing her, trying to wake her up. It’s very touching,” Wu explained. “Then he pushed her with his head, and licked her face. I even saw tears.”
Perhaps people were afraid of the oncoming traffic, are desensitized to seeing dogs struck by cars or just have cultural differences that cause dogs’ lives to not be as highly valued as they are in the US, but no one appears to have attempted to move either dog from the street for some time. Zhangzhou held his vigil for his lost loved one for over six hours.

LORAIN, Ohio – Lorain police are investigating a horrific case of animal abuse case over the weekend.
According to Lorain police, officers were called out to the tree lawn area of 816 W. 11th Street around 2:16 p.m. Saturday for a sick or injured animal.
Officers arrived at the scene and found a light brown pit bull, severelyemaciatedbut still alive. The animal’s bones were clearly visible through its skin. Lorain police said a dog of this breed should weigh around 75 pounds, but this dog appeared to weigh around 25 pounds.
The dog’s owner is unknown and officers believe the animal had previously been caged, neglected and dumped. The dog’s head was severely swollen and eyes forced shut. “Heartless pigs, I hope they are caught & dealt with severely!”
The animal growled softly as officers approached and could barely raise its head off of the ground. It couldn’t walk or stand.
Lorain police took the dog to the Lorain Animal Clinic, but the pit’s fate is uncertain at this time due to its horrific condition.
If the owner of the dog can be identified, an arrest warrant will be issued for cruelty to animals.

LORAIN, Ohio – Those taking care of Herbie, the emaciated pit bull being nursed back to health at the Lorain Animal Clinic, say he is continuing to improve each day.

On Monday, Herbie’s weight gain had slowed, “which is to be expected,” clinic workers wrote on their website.
“Herbie would like to thank everyone for their gifts, but he has limited space to keep things,” the post continued. “Toys, blankets, and treats can be donated to your local shelters in Herbies honour. Herbie is looking forward to his appointment with the ophthamologist (Friday).”
Now up to 51 pounds, as he was only 25 pounds when found starving and near-death, Herbie’s blood work is slowly improving. His veterinarian will have more information concerning his cataract appointment on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a $5,000 reward is being offered by theHumane Society of the United States for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for abusing and neglecting Herbie.
Herbie was found on Dec. 2 barely alive in the 800 block of West 11th Street. When authorities found him, he couldn’t stand or open his eyes.
