We would like thank the Mississippi Legislature and Governor Phil Bryant for passage of S.B. 2504 in 2012 which extends the state’s prohibition on a cruel and inhumane form of staged animal combat called hog-dog fighting. We ask this same respect and compassion be given to the Tame Domestic Rabbits being used as Live Bait for Dog Hunting Training. We the petitioners would like to file Animal Cruelty Complaints on David Wring of Beagles On Fire for the unnecessary, intentional and barbaric torturing of tame domestic rabbits being used as Live Bait to train his breeding hunting dogs and for selling and recommending tame domestic rabbits to be used as Live hunting training Bait by others when there are ethical alternatives.

Tame domestic rabbits are seen running for their lives banging off of fences to escape packs of hunting dogs until they are succumbed from sheer exhaustion only to be repeatedly attacked until they can no longer fight back.

Rabbits have small, fragile bones that can be easily injured,/backs broken and being Prey animals stress causes them to go into shock resulting in death. It is our opinion that the rabbits in these videos are clearly being tortured beyond survival.

How is this barbaric display of horrific senseless cruelty considered acceptable behaviour? Contact with a domestic rabbit in No Way prepares a hunting dog to catch a speedy wild rabbit. A domestic rabbit’s instincts are watered down due to the genetic manipulation of its gene pool, when you put a live domestic rabbit in the same pen with predators, you have just committed murder. That rabbit has no clue how to defend itself (and it can’t) causing an elevated heart rate, rapid respiration, its adrenaline will go full tilt, and its lactic acid will build rapidly.

A domestic rabbit does not have the natural coat (camouflage) that a wild animal has, and therefore teaching a beagle to hunt a domestic animal most certainly does not encourage its hard wired instincts.

The Beagle is a scent hound with a natural hunting instinct and it is his genetic make-up to hunt. These hard wired instincts carry from generation to generation and therefore teaching a Beagle to hunt and chase domestic rabbits by scent is not necessary or useful because the domesticated rabbit is a descendant of the European Rabbit and does not share the same scent as our wild rabbits.

Ethical Alternatives in Lure coursing are honored and used by Beagles Unlimited and the American Kennel Club that do not involve the torture of sentient, intelligent creatures. The artificial lure is made to look like a live animal where the lure is dragged across the ground at a high rate of speed, with a set number or turns and changes in direction to simulate the movements of a live animal or “game.”

CRUELTY TO ANIMALS—DOG TRAINING— 

The use of a Live Rabbits in the training of greyhound racing dogs has been outlawed in most States because such action causes the animal to be tortured and tormented, causing unnecessary pain, suffering and death. It has even been outlawed to kill and use dead rabbits.
Torturing of an animal for the purpose of training hunting dogs would also appear to be needless knowing there are ethical alternatives and therefore making it a crime for any person to come within the scope of the statutes prohibiting cruelty to “animals.”

§ 2156 – Animal fighting venture:- Prohibition 

In this section – (1) the term “animal fighting venture” means any event, in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, that involves a fight conducted or to be conducted between at least 2 animals for purposes of sport, wagering, or entertainment, except that the term “animal fighting venture” shall not be deemed to include any activity the primary purpose of which involves the use of one or more animals in hunting another.

The following section constitutes Mississippi’s anti-cruelty and animal fighting provisions, which were recently amended in 2011. The pertinent anti-cruelty law, § 97-41-1, states that any person who intentionally or with criminal negligence overrides, overdrives, overloads, tortures, torments, unjustifiably injures, deprives of necessary sustenance, food, or drink, cruelly beats, or needlessly mutilates any living creature, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

§ 97-41-1. Cruelty to living creatures 

Except as otherwise provided in Section 97-41-16 for a dog or cat, if any person shall intentionally or with criminal negligence override, overdrive, overload, torture, torment, unjustifiably injure, deprive of necessary sustenance, food, or drink; or cruelly beat or needlessly mutilate; or cause or procure to be overridden, overdriven, overloaded, tortured, unjustifiably injured, tormented, or deprived of necessary sustenance, food or drink; or to be cruelly beaten or needlessly mutilated or killed, any living creature, every such offender shall, for every offense, be guilty of a misdemeanor.

§ 97-41-2. Seizure of mistreated animal 

(1) All courts in the State of Mississippi may order the seizure of an animal by a law enforcement agency, for its care and protection upon a finding of probable cause to believe said animal is being cruelly treated, neglected or abandoned.

The Animal Welfare Act was signed into law in 1966. It is the only Federal law in the United States that regulates the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers. The event of hunting training is conducted by a Dealer of hunting dogs, considered a sport which involves the use of one or more animals hunting another and the rabbits are being used as Live Bait which directly relates to Animal fighting venture prohibition.

We the petitioners request the USDA and Marshall County, Mississippi to investigate proper licensing regarding Beagles on Fire i.e. Dealers license, License to sell animals online and Business License.

According to David Wring’s Website; his dogs are sold for $600 each and can be bought on the Internet, he also sells domestic rabbits.

Code of Federal Regulations Nov 6, 2013, Part 2, Subpart A – Licensing / 2.1 state that dealers selling over $500.00 with more than 4 breeding does requires licensing. 

Subpart A (c) (e) states failure of any person to comply with any provision of the Act, or any of the provisions of the regulations or standards in this sub-chapter, shall constitute grounds for denial of a license; or for its suspension or revocation by the Secretary, as provided in the Act

If the breeder has more than three breeding bitches and is selling the litters wholesale, he must be licensed under the Animal Welfare Act and must be in compliance with standards specified under the Animal Welfare Act. 

What happens when a rabbit is picked up by the scruff?
Their skin is made up of three layers, the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous. Just as in our human skin, rabbits’ skin is plentifully supplied with nerves, which allow them to feel your touch; temperature; and pain. The subcutaneous layer consists of fat, connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves. This layer helps hold the skin to the muscle tissue. When you lift a rabbit by the scruff the skin is torn loose from the muscle tissue.

9-Month-Old Puppy Used as ‘Bait Dog’ Dies Dues To Severe Injuries

“VIDEO TO FOLLOW…OK somebody know’s who this dog belonged to, so do yourself a favour & tell the authorities; anonymously if you must, just please do it! The people that make dogs fight to the death are nothing but cowardly cold hearted thug’s who take pleasure in seeing such heinous cruelty. They are probably into domestic violence too, as they like to dominate & be in control. But these MF’s are not fit to breathe the same air as animals never mind humans; locking them up is too good for them. The male pit bull puppy found in Yonkers was unable to recover from excessive wounds and blood loss, and had to be euthanized.

Local veterinarians were unable to save a 9-month-old pit bull puppy that suffered massive wounds and blood loss after likely being used as a ‘bait dog’ to train other dogs to fight. 

The SPCA of Westchester’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Division was contacted by the Yonkers Animal Shelter who got a call about a severely injured dog found on a walkway between Somerville Road and Edwards Place in Yonkers. The puppy was taken a local animal hospital. 

‘At the time, his breathing was extremely laboured ‘ said Ernest Lungaro, director of the SPCA’s HLE Division. ‘The veterinarian who examined him reported that the pit bull had severe multiple bite wounds and abrasions about his face, muzzle and head. He was extremely emaciated and neglected and was mostly likely used as a bait dog in a fighting ring. 

The veterinarian also noted the animal had old scars from previous attacks.’

The puppy was put to sleep Thursday, since veterinarians determined he was unable to recover from such severe injuries.

Puppies, weak or older dogs and females who can’t breed are often used as ‘bait dogs’ and are usually tied up and/or have their teeth removed so they are rendered defenceless-according to the Briarcliff based SPCA of Westchester, a no-kill non-profit animal shelter, hospital and animal cruelty law enforcement organization.

‘Although dog fighting is a crime in New York State, we are constantly on the lookout for clandestine groups who fight the animals in Westchester County,’ said Lungaro.

The SPCA’s HLE Division is asking that anyone with information on this puppy or information on dog fighting in their area to make a confidential call to the number below.

Colton Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Animal Abuse

COLTON — A Colton man was arrested on suspicion of killing, maiming or abusing animals Saturday while six others were arrested on suspicion of watching animal fighting after 74 live roosters, 40 deceased roosters and six live hens were found.

Colton police officers went to a reported “cock fight” at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of S. 8th St., according to a Colton Police Department news release.

When police arrived, about 20 people escaped on foot but officers were able to stop seven people.

The seven are:

– Arturo Pina, age 35, of Colton

– Salvador Cuavoyo, age 46, of Los Angeles

– Antonio Martinez, age 27, of Sylmar

– Jose Carreon, age 58, of Los Angeles

– Rodrigo Robles-Nunez, age 33, of Sylmar

– Freddy Fernandez, age 31, of Fontana

– Hector Sandoval, age 35, of Fontana

Pina was arrested in connection with abusing animals while the others were arrested on suspicion of presence as spectator for animal fighting.

The live animals were later transported to the San Bernardino Animal Shelter.

Also found at the location was a fighting arena, a weigh in area, fighting implements or razor spurs and a betting board.

For Molly: Honouring A Dog That Only Wanted Love

“A precious baby, yet another pit bull puppy used & abused, tragically at the hands of humans…who else!! Some may well say, well this was just another dog, found abused, who found a home. But remember all dogs rescued are special; their hearts all heal in their own unique ways. If I had been abused as this pup had, I wouldn’t be so quick to forgive…but that’s the difference between us & dogs or any animal…show them love & they will readily love back unconditionally.  Yes some dogs do take longer than others to heal, but rarely are there any, not willing to love; putting their hardships, behind them & always being there for you. Some dogs are just special, they have an amazing ability to make the shittiest day, be forgotten with one sweet lick…they make you laugh when you only feel like crying. This really touched my heart, & pricked my eyes with tears; this made me feel so grateful to have my 3 dogs, whom without, my life would be empty! I think anyone who has never loved a dog is missing; out on one of Gods sweetest, kindest most loyal of creatures…any ones best friend, a dog!”

“Molly, well, straight away, it was apparent that Molly had a big heart, willing to love & be loved by all.  This is where I have to question my faith, Molly had everything to live for with her new loving family. Molly the pit bull experienced the very worst and the very best of humankind during her very short life. Molly was brutalized as a bait dog and then left tied to a pole in the basement of an abandoned Baltimore house at six months old.

She was found by a workman, rescued, then adopted into a loving home.

Molly flourished in her new home and became attached to her dog siblings and her humans. For three months she knew happiness, comfort, companionship and love. Then a sudden and catastrophic health event ended her life.

A friend made the following memorial video in honor of Molly. It is both heartbreaking and heartwarming to watch.

Please Help Stop The Blood Sport – Bear Baiting In Pakistan & South Carolina

In rural Pakistan, up to 2,000 spectators will assemble to watch a tethered and clawless bear set upon by trained fighting dogs.

The brutal but lucrative contests are organised by powerful local landlords. They own and train the dogs, which are also victims of this ‘sport’, encouraging ferocity in attack situations.

The bears are owned by Kalanders – traditional bear owners –who are paid by the landlords to bring the bears to fight.

Bear baiting is banned by the Pakistan Wildlife Act and contravenes Islamic teachings, which forbid the baiting of animals.

 Taking action

WSPA and member society the Pakistan Biodiversity Research Centre (PBRC) have helped to dramatically reduce the number of bear baiting events in recent years, by:

• Campaigning to bring awareness of international opposition to the ‘sport’ to the Pakistani authorities.
• Working with the Pakistani government and wildlife officials to halt the fights and look at alternative livelihoods for bear owners.
• Monitoring the numbers of captive bears and pushing for prosecution.
• Building the Kund Park sanctuary, providing a home for confiscated bears.
• Educating potential spectators through a mobile phone awareness unit and religious teachings. Our anti-bear baiting message has been delivered in over 9,000 mosques to a potential audience of over 1 million people.
• Calling for greater action to prevent illegal bear cub poaching. A Pakistan-wide educational programme has raised awareness of the issue.

Support our work

Thanks to your help, WSPA has tracked down and stopped many bear baiting events. We’re getting closer to ending this brutal blood sport altogether.

Imagine a bear, tethered to a post, set upon by up to four trained fighting dogs. Hundreds of people are watching.

A dog’s mouth is bloodied from bear baiting

The dogs, which are also at risk of injury, are groomed to be extremely aggressive. Their ferocity is a matter of pride for the owner, who reaps the financial rewards of the baiting, which is illegal in Pakistan.

The crowd knows that the tethered bear is suffering a further handicap. Its claws and teeth will have been removed – an agonising mutilation for which anaesthetic is rarely used.

The ‘contest’ lasts for three rounds. As the dogs are encouraged to attack, the bear will tire and weaken, until it is unable to remain upright.

This is when the bear’s face and neck become vulnerable to the dogs’ teeth. They hang from the bear’s mouth and lips as they try to drag it to the floor. If they succeed, the dogs ‘win’ the round; if the bear stays on its feet, it has ‘won’.

Bears sustain more injuries than dogs in these savage stand-offs, suffering ripped noses and mouths. The dogs’ jaws, clamped around the bear’s nose, are prized apart using sticks.

Most bears are permanently scarred, but the killing of either animal is avoided – they are too valuable. The bears live on to suffer further at the hands of their owners.

I have some wonderful news to share with you – Sammy – the bear featured in a recent WSPA appeal – has now been rescued from the cruel blood sport of bear baiting.
Sammy (pictured before her rescue) is now safe from harm and recovering in the WSPA-funded sanctuary in Pakistan. Her life of fear and violence is over and a new life of peace, safety and wide open spaces is just beginning.

To mark this new beginning, Sammy has been given a beautiful new name: Yarrow, which means healing.

Because of WSPA supporters like you, she will have a safe and peaceful life in the sanctuary.

2 more bears rescued from a life of bear baiting in Pakistan :-
WSPA’s partner group BRC have rescued two more bears from the bear baiting industry and brought them to Balkasar to start a new life. The bears are now in quarantine and will be released into a large enclosure when their injuries have healed.

Dora, meaning ‘gift’, is pictured before the handover. She was used in bear baiting for about 5 years. Partner group BRC took her in September 2012 after her owner gave her up as part of the alternative livelihood programme. Dora has severe facial injuries, including a pierced tongue, that BRC are treating in quarantine.

Shaad is a six year old female used in the bear baiting industry. She was rescued by partner group BRC in September 2012 after her owner gave her up as part of the alternative livelihood programme. Shaad meaning ‘happy’ is pictured before the handover. Her facial wounds were treated on arrival at the Balkasar sanctuary

BACKGROUND : –

Bear baiting is a terribly cruel and inhumane blood sport that for the most part still persists in the Punjab and Sindh regions of northern Pakistan. Even though it has been illegal in Pakistan since 1890 — through the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act — routine bear baiting events are still being held in the name of public entertainment. It is especially prevalent in the rural tribal regions.

At a typical bear baiting event, a bear is tethered to a post in the middle of a stadium. The rope or chain is between 2-5 meters long. The bear’s claws have been blunted, his/her canine teeth removed and a nose ring inserted. At least two dogs are then let loose to attack the tethered bear. The dogs are removed when the bear submits; this is seen when the bear rolls on the ground to avoid further attack by the dogs. The bear is forced to do this up to as much as ten times per day.

The average life expectancy of a wild bear is 20 years. Bears used for bear baiting have significantly shortened lives to 5-7 years at best.

BEAR BAITING:-

Of all the ways in which bears are mistreated around the world, the medieval sport of bear baiting must be the most barbaric and obscene.

The setting of pit bull terriers against bears inflicts appalling suffering on both animals. This activity, which was once widespread in Europe, is now only found is rural parts of Pakistan. Thankfully, after five years of campaigning, there are signs that bear baiting will be banished from this last strong hold.

Bear baiting has been illegal in Pakistan for more than 100 years, but WSPA’s first investigation, undertaken in 1993, found evidence of 80 different contests involving 300 bears.

Pakistan wildlife expert Inayat Chaudry, who undertook the survey, uncovered for the first time a network of hunters, wildlife dealers, gypsy bear owners and land owners which enabled bear baiting to thrive. And he revealed how the bears, whose teeth and claws were removed, were virtually defenceless against an onslaught from as many as eight dogs in one day.

 Blood Sport:-

Historically, bear baiting was popular in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, who was so fond of the sport she overruled Parliament when they attempted to ban bear baiting on Sundays. The practice was introduced to south Asian cultures by British colonizers in the mid-nineteenth century.

While the sport is illegal in Pakistan, it persists to this day. Land owners, called landlords in Pakistan, arrange bear baiting at village fairs.

Bear cubs are taken from the wild and held in captivity in small cages. Without adequate care and sustenance, the bears live lives of misery. Of course, the fight is manipulated in favour of the dogs because the bears are tied to a post and have their sharpest (canine) teeth removed and claws filed down to prevent the bear from adequately defending him/her self against the dogs.

“The physical and mental trauma these bears have endured means they will never be able to experience life in the wild. We need to provide them with the space, care, treatment and nourishment that they will need for the rest of their lives,” said Jan Schmidt-Burbach, WSPA’s Wildlife Veterinary Programmes Manager.

Dog attacks are of great concern to Guide Dogs and to guide dog owners. The number of guide dog owners who are reporting dog attacks on their dogs is increasing. Our latest research shows the number of reported attacks on guide dogs has risen from three a month to over eight dog attacks a month within a 24 month period from June 2010 to May 2012.

In most cases the cause of the attack was unprovoked, and the aggressor dog was uncontrolled and off the lead.

The impact on guide dog owners and guide dogs

Dog attacks can have a devastating impact on both the people and dogs involved. Three guide dogs have been permanently withdrawn, and two others are currently being assessed to see if they are able to continue working.

The other major impact is that blind and partially sighted people are left without a guide dog, their mobility aid, and become housebound until they can be matched with a suitable dog.

Some guide dog owners have been left too frightened to go out as a result of an attack. One guide dog owner wanted to move house due to the response of the owners of the attacking dog, who in some cases used verbal abuse against blind and partially sighted people.

Some appeared to be under the influence of drink or drugs, and in one case, the owner of an aggressive dog laughed at a guide dog owner during an attack on his guide dog.

Teenager’s guide dog savaged in fourth dog attack in a month in Liverpool park

A TEENAGER was left devastated after her guide dog was attacked in a Liverpool park.

Partially sighted Jayne Massey, 14, from Walton, has had two-year-old Witney since April but the black labrador/ retriever cross was left needing stitches to her ear and antibiotics after another dog “pounced” on her last week.

Jayne, who only has one eye and extremely limited vision, was away on a school trip last Wednesday when mum Marie, 56, dad George, 63, and their grandaughter Ava, 4, took the dog for a walk in Walton Hall Park at about 1pm.

As they left the park a brown and white Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog, who was with a group of teenagers, attacked Witney, biting her ear.

This is the fourth time an attack by a brown and white dog has been reported around the Walton area in the past month.

Marie said: “It was terrifying. As we went by the dog it just pounced on Witney from behind.

“When I told Jayne what had happened she was absolutely devastated and sobbed all night.”

Jayne said: “I was heartbroken when my mum told me Witney had been attacked.

“I just didn’t expect it to happen to her because she’s such a lovely dog.

“Now I’m just worried about how she’ll recover and whether she’ll be able to come into school with me in a couple of weeks. I’m thinking about her all the time and I just hope she’ll be ok.”

Jayne is one of the youngest people in the country to have a guide dog.

Black Bear Gets A New Home At Charles Towne Landing: Petitions Against Bear Baiting

For years, Memphis the black bear was trapped in a backyard in the Lowcountry. At first he was chained to a tree, and then he was placed in a five-by-twelve-foot chain-link cage.

“This is more common than people realize with these types of animals,” says Michelle Reid, director of the nonprofit Animal Rescue & Relief. “And it doesn’t necessarily have to be in the middle of nowhere.” Several months ago, Animal Rescue & Relief took Memphis from that backyard, and now he has two acres to roam in an enclosure at Charles Towne Landing.

Reid won’t say what town Memphis was found in, but she says it took about a year and a half to investigate the claims of animal abuse and get through the red tape to have him removed. When Reid and a co-worker finally went to the house with backup from local police, they removed the 450-pound bear and put him in a quarantine space. They gave him the name Memphis.

They also helped find him his new home in the Animal Forest at Charles Towne Landing on the banks of the Ashley River. “When he first was let loose into his habitat, he just took off,” Reid says. “Tearing branches out of the trees, he jumped in the pond and swam around, and he just had a field day. Every day with him is like that because he’s never had that.” “Because certain humans think they are superior to animals, so can do with them as they wish…it’s wrong & must stop!”

Reid says that some people keep bears for bear baiting (also known as bear baying), a bloodsport in which hunting dogs are released into a cage to attack a bear, sometimes with its teeth and claws removed. The practice is still legal in South Carolina. But in the case of Memphis the bear, Reid says it looks like the owner was just keeping him as a pet. “It seems that a lot of times when people have these sorts of animals … it’s just not your average owner and your average pet,” she says.

According to Reid, Memphis’ owner will not face criminal charges. In February, state Sen. David Thomas (R-Greenville) sponsored the Exotic Animal and Reptile Control and Regulation Act, a bill that would require people to apply for a special permit and pay a $150 annual fee to own any exotic animal — a term defined in the bill as including bears, hippos, camels, raccoons, opossums, lemurs, monkeys, beavers, and porcupines. The bill never made it past the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, but Reid is holding out hope that another legislator will sign on to support the bill in next year’s session. “It’s bloody disgraceful to think that anyone can take a wild animal & keep it as a back yard pet, they are wild for a reason!”

“I’d hate for it to take somebody getting hurt for people to realize that we need those laws,” Reid says. “Sadly it will probably take something like that, for the law to act!”

In her 10 years leading the organization, which investigates animal abuse and neglect cases in North and South Carolina, Reid has encountered exotic animal auctions where people can purchase monkeys, tigers, and large reptiles. She has seen people keeping Alaskan wolves on their property for breeding, and she was involved with the seizure of 76 cats and dogs from a pet shelter in Williamsburg County, N.C., where The Post and Courier reported that cats had pus oozing from their eyes and dogs had faeces in their cages.

The Animal Forest is also home to elk, bison, river otters, mountain lions, brown pelicans, and egrets. The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is $7.50 for adults, $3.75 for S.C. senior citizens, $3.50 for students age 6-15, and free for children age 5 and under.

Bear baiting, also known as “bear baying” by some, is a cruel spectator event where participants release their dogs to attack a tethered, captive bear, who has had her claws and some of her teeth cut off, leaving her defenseless

A pack dogs rush the bear, barking, biting and lunging at it. Frightened, the bear rears up on it’s hind legs, and has to use its strength to fend off the dogs, swinging at them.

The bear suffers bites and gashes, but the real trauma is the psychological trauma of a ceaseless set of attacks that last for hours.

In fact, some bears are prone to attacks for four hours as nearly 100 teams of dogs are set upon the bear in rapid succession. The bear…may endure this treatment every weekend throughout much of the year.

Surrounded by throngs of onlookers, many who travelled hundreds of miles to take part in the despicable spectacle.

In rural Pakistan, up to 2,000 spectators will assemble to watch a tethered and clawless bear set upon by trained fighting dogs.

WSPA is working hard to permanently stop what we believe is one of the world’s most savage blood sports.

The brutal but lucrative contests are organised by powerful local landlords. They own and train the dogs, which are also victims of this ‘sport’, encouraging ferocity in attack situations.

The bears are owned by Kalanders – traditional bear owners –who are paid by the landlords to bring the bears to fight.

Bear baiting is banned by the Pakistan Wildlife Act and contravenes Islamic teachings, which forbid the baiting of animals.

The ‘contest’ lasts for three rounds. As the dogs are encouraged to attack, the bear will tire and weaken, until it is unable to remain upright.

This is when the bear’s face and neck become vulnerable to the dogs’ teeth. They hang from the bear’s mouth and lips as they try to drag it to the floor. If they succeed, the dogs ‘win’ the round; if the bear stays on its feet, it has ‘won’.

Bears sustain more injuries than dogs in these savage stand-off’s, suffering ripped noses and mouths. The dogs’ jaws, clamped around the bear’s nose, are prized apart using sticks.

Most bears are permanently scarred, but the killing of either animal is avoided – they are too valuable. The bears live on to suffer further at the hands of their owners.

New facility offers special care for baited bears:-

An up-to-date clinic made possible by a generous supporter is now enabling staff at a WSPA-funded sanctuary in Pakistan to give rescued bears the very best care and treatment.

The Kund Park Sanctuary, run with member society the Bioresource Research Centre (BRC), is located between Punjab and North-West-Frontier Province where the Indus and Kabul rivers meet. It currently provides veterinary care and a safe haven for 22 bears formerly used for baiting.

Oconto County man charged for instigating animal fight

 

OWN OF MAPLE VALLEY – A 22-year-old Oconto County man is charged with two felonies for instigating a fight between his dog and a raccoon.

“It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen in terms of animal abuse in 35 years of being an attorney,” said John Evans, the district attorneyfor Oconto County.

Evans says Friday was the first time he had to charge someone with instigating a fight between animals.

It stems from a situation earlier this month when Paul Detert allegedly tried to train his raccoon dog how to hunt at his home in the Town of Maple Valley.

According to a criminal complaint, Detert put the dog in a 55 gallon barrel and then put a live raccoon inside.

“It’s horrendous, it’s depraved,” said Evans. “You can’t even describe what this might have sounded like. And he claimed when he was questioned, he volunteered information that the fight took between five and ten minutes. So to stand there and listen to that, although not being able to see it is unbelievable.”

According to the complaint, when Detert opened the barrel the raccoon was dead and his dog bit him in the hand.

“So he decided to execute the dog by tying it up and shooting it through the head with a revolver,” said Evans.

In the complaint, deputies claim they couldn’t see a dog bite on Detert’s hand when questioning him.

As for the raccoon, Detert allegedly received it from a friend who has a license to trap them.

“People train their dogs on a lot of different animals out there, raccoons, rabbits, bears and bobcats. There is legal ways of doing so,” said Joe Paul, a DNR Conservation Warden in Oconto County.

Paul says most of the year it is legal to train dogs on animals like raccoons. However, he says it is normally done in the wild. Paul says he’s never heard of someone training a dog with another animal in an enclosed area.

Detert is charged, but was never taken into custody.

FOX 11 talked to Detert outside his home. About the situation with his dog and the raccoon, Detert told FOX 11 ‘it is what it is‘ and that he had no comment.

Detert is scheduled to be in Oconto County Court on November 6th.
