The images, released by anti-hunt campaigners, show a group of terriermen setting their dog on the creature.

A farmer who captured the killing on camera says the group then called over three children to show them the remains.
The men can then be seen walking away with two dead animals. It is unclear where and how the second fox was killed.
The shocking incident happened shortly after a hunt on December 28 by the Modbury Harriers, which rides in south Devon.
The League Against Cruel Sports has handed the photos over to the RSPCA and asked them to investigate it as a possible breach of the Hunting Act..
The law bans hunting foxes with a pack of hounds – however it doesn’t cover the use of dogs to flush out animals underground.
The farmer, who has asked not to be identified, said the fox was initially chased across the field by hounds.
The Countryside Alliance said there was ‘no question’ the behaviour was legal – describing the killing as ‘professional and humane’.

The huntsmen moved on but before it could climb out of the badger’s set three men with guns and spades arrived – with three children following close behind.
The farmer said: ‘I sat there in disbelief – how could those guys think any of what had played out was fit for young children to witness?
‘I watched in horror as a whole pack of hounds poured into our neighbour’s field then piled into our meadow.
‘They made that hideous blood-curdling squealing – known as ‘speaking’ – which means they are on the scent of a fox.
‘I saw a beautiful vixen flash across the meadow and disappear into an old badger sett on my neighbour’s farm.
‘At the top of the hill I saw a couple of guys carrying spades and a terrier on a lead. They were going to dig her out and kill her right then and there.
‘The men came down and filled in the exit holes to stop the fox escaping and then called the children over to watch as they dug out and killed the young vixen.’

The farmer said the three men came across a second badger inside the hole which they also shot dead as the children craned their necks to see what was happening.
He added: ‘This is the dirty underbelly of fox hunting, the bit they don’t like even their followers to see.
‘But I was disgusted to see the terriermen had brought three youngsters to watch – one was only about five years old.
The farmer, who keeps a flock of 140 breeding ewes and a few chickens, is strongly anti-hunting and has complained about huntsmen trespassing on his land.
oe Duckworth, chief executive of the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS), said: ‘This horrific incident of animal cruelty shows not only a total disregard for the dogs and foxes but also for the welfare of thechildren.’
The Countryside Alliance, however, said there was ‘no question’ the behaviour was legal – describing the killing as ‘professional and humane’.
Spokesman Tim Bonner said the outrage merely demonstrated that outsiders do not ‘understand the realities of the countryside and country life’.
Mr Bonner said he had spoken to the hunt, who told him the killing had been carried out as ‘pest control” with the permission of the landowner.
He said: ‘The children were not in the hole – they were close by – and as far as we are concerned it was a totally professional operation and nothing which should upset anyone.
‘They were using the terrier work exemption and properly, professionally and humanely managing the killing of those two foxes.
‘There would be plenty of children of that sort of age involved in pheasant shoots and ferreting.
‘The vast majority of children eat meat and at the end of the day it is a dead animal.’
The Hunting act:-
The Hunting Act came in to force in February 2005 and was passed under the 1997 Labour government. It bans hunting any wild mammal – including foxes, deer and hares -with dogs in England and Wales.
Under the Act it is completely legal to ‘flush out’ – i.e. coax an animal from a hole or a sett – with dogs.
It is also legal to drag hunt with hounds. This is when the dogs are trained to follow an artificial scent and is now common practice across the country.
Hunting mammals with dogs was banned in Scotland two years earlier under the Protection of Wild Mammals Act 2002.
It is still legal to hunt in Northern Ireland.
Breaking the law is a summary offence. Those found guilty of doing so would be fined.
There were 181 convictions under the Hunting Act up to the end of 2010.

But a life in captivity means she is used to it and today the 11-year-old brown bear is taking part in a circus dress rehearsal. Masha is one of four bears who have completed a three year training programme in Russia as part of a travelling troupe.

After a video showing violent killing of horses in a Russian slaughterhouse was posted to YouTube last month, an online petitionhas been launched to ask for stopping the cruelty.

The video, posted on February 26, bears the title “Russian Race Horses Brutally Slaughtered for Sausage” and comes with the warning of having very graphic content. The video description reads: “The world needs to see the extreme brutality horses are suffering in Russia.” Horses in the video are shown hammered on their heads repeatedly with sledgehammers inside the slaughterhouse as they drag themselves about the place.
“This is the most inhuman act I have ever witnessed,” reads the petition letter on Change.org, addressed to the Delegation of the European Union to Russia. “Every horse slaughterhouse I’ve seen has been violently abusive and this is beyond comprehension.”

As noted by the Activist Post, producing horse meat has legally remained banned inthe US since 2007, though early this month it was reported thatUSDA was set to allow horse slaughter in the US, starting with a New Mexico horse slaughterhouse in the next few months.

Horses have always been a part of my life, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy to watch the video…it took me several attempts, to actually look at the screen, the audio was bad enough. Now, having seen & spilled many tears over it, I have to say, it is the most brutal, savage, gruesome & most distressing video, of horse slaughter I have ever seen; it quite simply can’t & shouldn’t be allowed to carry on, in a civilised society!!”

“The quality of the video isn’t very good (which I’m thankful for) this could suggest, the video may have been taken several years ago; it is also very noisy. One can see several horses, in a concrete building, some stood around waiting to be slaughtered, others already down & bleeding out. Other horses not yet unconscious or down, are trying to get back up, yet slipping in all directions; due to the blood soaked floor of their fellow equines. Men wait with sledgehammers or axes (turned to use the wooden part of the head) for the next horses to be walked in. There are horses waiting near what looks like a gated area, who are in full view of what is happening! There appears to be no order or process to the system, nobody is wearing aprons, gloves or the usual attire associated with a legal slaughter-house; this could mean this is not a legitimate slaughter-plant.”
“The bewildered & frightened horses, are each lead to one of the heartless bastards, who with little thought or aim, uses brute force to smash the sledgehammer or axe into the horse’s head. There is no skilled technique, nor restraints used, to hold the horse’s head still. Horses being flight animals, constantly shift position, trying to escape the blow’s of the hammer. One of the horses with a rope around its neck, is wrapped around a post & pulled tight, the horse can be heard gasping as the rope around his neck gets tighter, he can’t move as freely now, so another aim is taken. Few go down with the first poorly aimed blow, which results in the dazed & confused horses, trying to take flight again. They try in vain to stand, only to be repeatedly bludgeoned about the head, until they go down. The second they are down, their throats are slit; meaning they could still be fully conscious, when bled out!”

People who know and love horses are especially aware of what sensitive, social and intelligent creatures they are, which makes the appalling actions shown in this clip all the more reprehensible.
We are getting in touch with our contacts in Russia to make them aware of the practices reported to be taking place in slaughterhouses there and ask for improvements.
We would strongly encourage you to also contact an animal welfare society which is based in Russia and approved by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).

“Why the hell do we need to keep talking about killing horses for food…for Christ’s sake!! We already kill more than enough cow’s, pigs, sheep & poultry, all classed as livestock. These days the demand for high-end meat products, at good retail prices, mean livestock are modified, to produce the maximum end product! With the introduction of specific genes to the male species, breeding via artificial insemination & intense farming methods, which often use genetics & growth hormone drugs, to give the best profitable products; I think the USDA & the Health & Safety dudes have plenty to occupy themselves!!!
Especially since the recent scare of horse meat contaminating meat supposed to be fit for human consumption…when it clearly isn’t& probably hasn’t been for a while! 99% of horses have drugs, wormer’s, fly repellents etc. administered within their bodies even at young ages; meaning their meat is totally unfit for human consumption!
Horses are not intensely farmed, they do not take growth hormones to make them fatter in the rump to make better steaks…because first & foremost, THEY ARE NOT LIVESTOCK ! Horses are & always will be considered companion animals. Horses are pets, as much a part of the family as cats & dogs; therefore they should be classed as such; PETS! I for one would no more see my horse as edible, than any of my dogs; could you eat your dog??
If there is an abundance of horses that can not be cared for, then kind euthanasia is the answer; providing a gentle, painless death, in order to prevent suffering. Horse slaughter is a death fraught with terror, pain, & suffering, which often starts before they are even loaded onto a trailer; many hours or days before they get to the slaughter plant!!

The U.S. will be legally obligated to inspect horse-slaughtering plants if Congress doesn’t act to reinstate a ban on the killing of the animals, which would only be used in meat for export, the Department of Agriculture said.
Congress last year lifted the ban established in 2006 that prevented horse slaughter in the U.S., Michelle Saghafi, a USDA spokeswoman, said in an e-mailed statement today. While no plants are currently authorized to slaughter horses, “several companies” have asked that theUSDA Food Safety and Inspection Servicere-establish inspections, the agency said.
“These companies must still complete necessary technical requirements and FSIS must still complete its inspector training, but at that point, the department will legally have no choice but to go forward with inspections, which is why we urge Congress to reinstate the ban,” according to the USDA statement, which did not give a time frame on when inspections would occur.
The first horse-slaughtering plant may be approved in the next two months, according to A. Blair Dunn, a lawyer for Valley Meat Co., owner of a plant in Roswell,New Mexico. The New YorkTimes reported the possible approval earlier today.
Lawsuit Filed
Valley Meat filed a lawsuit against the USDA and FSIS in October and alleged that the USDA was violating the Federal Meat Inspection Actby failing to offer inspection for horse meat,Dunn, who is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, said in a telephone interview. The law states that the USDA must appoint inspectors to examine “all amenable species,” which include horses, before slaughter, Dunn said.
This week, theJustice Departmentasked for another 60 days to respond to the lawsuit, Dunn said. The request was made so “USDA can make sure all the components are in compliance in order to issue a grant of inspection,” according to Dunn. The USDA has notified Valley Meat that the company has completed all of its requirements to move forward, Dunn said.
Once approved, Valley Meat will sell the horse meat for export, Dunn said. They’d be open to selling domestically if there is a market, he said.
FSIS doesn’t allow imports of horse meat from other countries to the U.S. for human consumption, Cathy Cochran, a spokeswoman for USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, said in an e-mailed statement. Also, none of the countries or companies in the European Union that have recently recalled beef because of non-disclosed horse meat ship beef to the U.S., she said.
European Withdrawals
In Europe, retailers withdrew products such as frozen beef burgers, lasagne and meat balls from the shelves after the discovery of horse meat in products in several countries, after the initial case in Ireland in mid-January. The European Union has ordered immediate testing across the region for equine DNA in beef products and the veterinary drug phenylbutazone in horse meat.
“The meat and poultry inspection process in the U.S. puts FSIS inspectors carrying out our mandatory inspection requirements in U.S. plants every day they operate and at ports of entry inspecting products that come into our country,” Cochran said in the statement.
The agency also conducts “port-of-entry re-inspections for imported products, and that offers evidence on how other country’s inspection systems are working, she said. In addition, there are yearly reviews of countries that export to the U.S. to make sure they are “at least equivalent” to the U.S. process, she said. FSIS also conducts on-site regulatory system audits at least once every three years in nations that ship to the U.S.

I have learned that you are likely to approve a horse slaughtering plant in Roswell, New Mexico in the next two months and I do not set well with this. New Mexico has served for years as a gruesome funnel for horses going to slaughter in Mexico. A horse slaughter facility in Roswell, New Mexico, will only increase the traffic of horses coming into our state for slaughter.
In the midst of drought and economic difficulty, New Mexicans have rallied around humane solutions for horses, including an emergency feed assistance program, subsidized gelding program, and a humane euthanasia program. I understand 120,000 U.S. horses/year are sent to slaughter — actually a number that we can do something about. With less breeding and more support for a basic infrastructure to support horses, America‘s horses will be provided with some basic compassion and decency, which they deserve.
I understand that the applicant for the Roswell license had previous USDA violations when they were operating as a cattle slaughterhouse. Documented evidence of egregious violations and a lack of enforcement by the USDA in U.S. slaughterhouses led to the de-funding of USDA inspections in 2007, but in the absence of a federal ban on horse slaughter, America’s wild and domestic horses continue to be shipped across federal borders where they are slaughtered just as inhumanely to this very day. If horse slaughter plants are reopened in the U.S., horses will undoubtedly suffer torturous agony on U.S. soil again.
This is evidenced by cruelty violations and lack of enforcement of the and lack of enforcement of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act that have been documented in GAO reports. U.S. undercover surveillance footage shows horses being whipped, beaten and electrically prodded and repeatedly bludgeoned, resulting in fully conscious horses being dragged, hung, bled out and dismembered alive. Established research indicates that there is no data to support the inflated number of horses reported as abandoned in the U.S. Countless unsubstantiated reports and articles are circulated by proponents which create the misconception that abandonment is out of control. It’s a crime to abandon, neglect or abuse a horse, and history clearly shows that crime rates increase during times of economic downturn.
The substantiated data shows there is an increase in horses in need that is tied to the worst economic recession since the Great Depression. Investigations have revealed some of the horses found abandoned were rejected for slaughter and were simply dumped by kill buyers. This would not have happened if slaughter was illegal. The “unmanageable surplus horses” is an artificial crisis created by the proponents to justify slaughter as “a necessary evil”, but slaughter is not driven by a surplus of horses; rather it is driven by a foreign market for horse meat.
On average, less than 1% of the 9 million horses that exist in the U.S. are “surplus or unwanted”. This tiny fraction of the horse population can easily be managed and reabsorbed back into the equine community just as it has in the past. The “surplus” of horses created by the industry can simply be kept longer, sold or traded, retrained in new disciplines, donated to retirement and rescue facilities, humanely euthanized or they can provide a public service such as equine therapy.
When the market for horsemeat dropped, and the number of horses sent to slaughter went from over 300,000 in the 1990’s to less than 50,000 in 2003, the industry was forced to take responsibility for the surplus of horses. The country was not overrun with “unwanted” horses; rather they were reabsorbed back into the equine community.
Horse owners that are unable to provide continuing care for their horses can have them humanely euthanized for the cost equal to one month’s care. Humane euthanasia clinics are often times available to horse owners that cannot afford to have a qualified veterinarian administer the lethal injection.
Slaughter creates a salvage or secondary market that enables and encourages over breeding and contributes to any excess horses in the market. U.S. horses, whether used for competition, recreation or work are treated with many substances known to be toxic to humans; substances that can be lethal when ingested by humans, and many of which have been banned from the human food chain in most countries. Horse slaughter is NOT desirable economic development. As evidenced from the past 30 years of operation in the U.S., these communities have been devastated by slaughter’s negative economic and environmental impacts. The government paid out over five million dollars in tax payer money a year to subsidize three foreign-owned horse slaughter plants in the U.S.
Horses have an established total impact on the US Gross Domestic Product of $112.1 BILLION and if “surplus’ horses are not sent to slaughter their absorption back into the equine community can instead provide a boost to the economy. Millions of dollars in losses are attributed to horse slaughter by those that have come forward from within the slaughter industry.
The majority of equine industry and community members OPPOSE horse slaughter.
Horse slaughter benefits a relatively small number of powerful stakeholders within the U.S. equine industry that stand to profit from the exploitation of irresponsible excess breeding practices.

A well-loved Russian ostrich has died from hypothermia after his feet froze to the floor of a cage during a power cut on a cold night.
Adam the ostrich, the star of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Zoo and its unofficial mascot,frantically tried to free himself after becoming stuck to the concrete floor, leaving feathers covering the cage.
He was found dead by zoo keepers early on Monday morning.

A post-mortem revealed that the bird died of hypothermia.
An investigation is now underway into the death of the popular bird, according to The Siberian Times.
Animal rights campaigners in theRussian Far East are blaming Adam’s death on cutbacks at the zoo, claiming workers failed to sufficiently insulate the cage and prepare it for the winter season.
Activist Melissa Malyarzhik said Adam could have died because his cage was not covered with a thick layer of hay and manure.
During previous winters, this would have acted as thermal insulation – but Miss Malyarzhik said the zoo’s management had decided against it this year.
Activists are now calling for an independent probe into Adam’s death.
Bosses at the zoo said temperatures had plummeted this winter but maintained their animals were well looked after.
Zoo director Tatiana Karpukhina said: ‘We do look after all our animals well. This ostrich arrived to our zoo seven years ago and has wintered well since.
‘The frosts this winter were truly severe. Of course we took some advance measures and bought extra heating devices – but sadly that night there was a power cut and it switched off.
‘We admit that the animal died from hypothermia, the autopsy showed it clearly. We have already began an internal investigation.’
Far Easternanimal rights activists have launched their own investigation into the ostrich’s death and requested assistance from the Vita Center for Animal Rights Protection.
The zoo was founded in 1993 and is home to a collection of mammals, birds and reptiles.

The dog died in a sickening New Year prank in Severniy, a suburb of Novosibirsk, say reports. “What sort of sick imbecile does this? I am sure they are born without that part of the brain that controls sympathy, empathy, right & bloody wrong!”

It is not known if the animal was a household pet or a stray dog – but the revolting treatment it was subjected to has resulted in a web appeal to identify and shame those responsible. “It matters not whether this dog was a pet or stray, these shit heads need catching & dragged round on the ice with no clothes on until their dicks fall off!”
The image emerged on 4 January, two days after the act of torture, and was going viral on Russian social sites.
‘We are searching for witnesses’ said one posting.
‘Yesterday, 2 January, at approximately 10 pm, some bast***s were driving around Severniy village, dragging the dog tied with a rope to a car behind them. “So, what did you do? Obviously not try to stop them!”
‘The car is silver Toyota Corolla. We didn’t spot the number plate.’
Ironically, the horrific picture emerged on the same day that famous 77 year old Hollywood actress Brigette Bardot threatened to leave her native France and seek Russian citizenshipover plans to put to death two elephants at a zoo in Lyon.
The elephants called Baby and Nepal have contracted tuberculosis.
‘If the powers that be have the cowardice and the shamelessness to kill Baby and Nepal, I have decided to take Russian nationality and quit this country that is nothing more an animal cemetery,’ she warned. “Good for her, I do like a women who is beautiful & strong when it comes to animals!”
In 2011 Bardot, a 1960s sex symbol, hailed Vladimir Putin – who this week granted Russian citizenship to actor Gerard Depardieu – as ‘my favourite prime minister’ after he banned the import and export of harp seal skins.
But after the revelation of the dog picture, one posting from Irina Serebryanaya asked in disbelief: ‘And Brigette Bardot is going to move to Russia because of the elephants….?‘ “Well she didn’t know some sick scummy bastards were going to do this, when she said it!”
