“Sorry, I’ve been away for several days due to ongoing health problems! I did posts as & when I could, but could never finish them in their entirety, due to pain!! So many posts are not in the date order they should be, & it’s going to get worse, before it get’s better, hence several posts at once! For new followers, please bear with me, I’m waiting on having a morphine pump fitted, to ease my pain; which should enable me to post daily again…fingers crossed!! So please excuse any mistakes, pain affects my ability to notice errors, due to lack of concentration etc.!!”

“It was with great sadness that I came back, to find out Schoep had passed away; even though I didn’t know them personally, his passing, broke my heart! He was indeed a special dog with my kind of very special owner, prepared to do anything to help ease his best friends pain. I followed his story when I first saw a video of John in the water with Schoep; floating, asleep in Johns arms! I hope John finds peace in the knowledge that Schoep’s legacy can help many more dogs & that Schoep is now at peace; due to Johns special care! R.I.P dear Schoep, you will surely be missed by many. But now you can run, free from pain, through the tall grass, jump fallen trees & swim in crystal clear waters; just over Rainbow Bridge”!

Only a month ago we celebrated Schoep’s twentieth birthday. Sadly on Wednesday Schoep passed away.

Schoep became an internet sensation when a picture of his owner soothing his arthritis in a lake went viral.

Over 187,000 people follow Schoep and John on their Facebook page, captivated by the love the two had for each other.

On Thursday John posted “I Breathe But I Can’t Catch My Breath…Schoep passed yesterday.”

Schoep and John’s story has had a significant impact on many. When the picture and their story went viral donations started pouring in from all over the world.

More than enough money came in to give Schoep the best possible care for his arthritis.

John and Schoep’s veterinarian, Erik Haukass, decided to use the rest of the money to help others. They created Schoep’s Legacy Foundation.

The foundation’s goal is to help low-income families care for their animals. To date the foundation has raised over $25,000.

“It could help another 30 or 40 Schoeps,” said Haukass.

Schoep, The Dog Whose Internet Photo Touched Millions, Dies :(((((((

The world is mourning with a man who lost his dog Wednesday.

John Unger and his elderly dog, Schoep, became Internet celebrities last summer because of Bayfield, Wis., photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson’s photograph of the pair in the waters of Lake Superior. Unger took Schoep into the lake regularly to ease the discomfort of the dog’s arthritis.

People from Texas to Japan to Slovakia gave money to help pay Schoep’s veterinary bills, medications and laser treatments.
It gave the faithful companions another year together.
Schoep turned 20 on June 15. He died 26 days later. On Thursday, a photo of a paw print in the sand was posted on the Official Fan Page of Schoep and John on Facebook.

He is blind in one eye that may need an enucleation. He is not completely blind, but may possibly have diminished vision in the other eye.

I have a Yorkshire Terrier who had to have both eyes removed within 1 month of each other. We took him to the vets numerous times, saying he just didn’t seem right; as an owner who loves their dog, one knows if & when something is wrong!! However, the vet kept telling us he just had infections, which he was treated for.

Two years ago on Christmas Eve, we knew something was seriously wrong with Harry; so we rushed him to the vet. His retina had detached & the pressure in his eye was so high, he must have felt like his head was about to burst. He went straight into theatre, there was nothing they could do, other than to  remove the eye then & there.

They told us his other eye had glaucoma & may have to come out as the retina could detach in that one also. After a month of seeing him refuse food & just wanting to sit somewhere quiet, we couldn’t bear to see him go through so much pain again, so we told the vets to take his remaining eye out also. We learnt that the pressure in that eye was triple what it should have been, so we made the right move!

Having had both eyes out, Harry is virtually no different. As long as we don’t move furniture around, he knows where he is going & will often run from one room to the other…which amazes me!!  Most people don’t even notice he has no eyes.”

Update on Borko: K9 Rescue Bulgaria Borko Has Wheels Now!

“Remember the sad story of Borko, the little disabled street puppy taken in by Dr. Litov in Bulgaria? A Lynch Mob and the Media staged a shameful act of barbaric abuse on the dog & used intimidation in order to force the village Doctor, out of his home and work, only because he is helping the strays in the village, where there is no vet and no shelter. Borko Has Wheels

Our media trip to Bulgaria is planned for June where together with Wetnose Animal Aid and Norton Animal Rescue Foundation, we will bring Justice for Borko with a film crew and British presenters Lorraine Chase and Wendy Turner Webster to highlight the plight of dogs like Borko and make a documentary about the animal welfare situation in Bulgaria and what can be done about it.

In other news, Dr Litov had his first court victory on 25th April when the Judge suspended the eviction notice, until the end of the trial, and now this week at the Administrative Court, the Regional Health Authority Inspector gave evidence and confirmed that all inspections carried out in the last few years showed no violations justifying an eviction.

The Court’s final ruling will be at the end of June, so please sign and keep sharing our Justice 4 Borko petition – we have 56k signatures so far – we need to aim for a target of 100k signatures for it to be taken seriously by the Government. Borko and all the abused animals deserve our support!  Thank you! ♥

Owner HACKED OFF dog’s legs with a machete to stop him jumping over the garden fence (but he’ll soon walk again with prosthetic paws)

“Wouldn’t any normal owner just higher the gate, or am I just being stupid? would that be too simple…Fxxxxxg arse holes, I suppose they got off with a slapped wrist, if they were caught, can’t find anything to suggest they were prosecuted. Oh, how animals must hate us human beings & I don’t blame them one bit! I would take this baby in a heartbeat if I could, somebody is going to get a little angel!” 

A dog which had his back legs cut off with a machete has learned to walk again thanks to the attention of dedicated specialists.

Fabio, a four-year-old Maltese, was cruelly mutilated by a previous owner after attempting to climb over a chain-link fence.

Now he is set to be fitted with a new pair of prosthetic legs to stop him suffering from agonising pain as he runs around exploring the world.

The adorable dog was rescued from his abusive home in Miami by Florida Poodle Rescue last month, according to ABC Action News. (see ABC story below)

Joani Ellis, from the rescue home, suggested his legs were ‘probably tied off with some type of tying mechanism and hacked off with a machete’.

She added: ‘The story was that his feet were cut off because he was trying to be an escape artist and climb a chain link fence.‘

However, the adventurous pet is nonetheless able to walk around – albeit at a reduced pace – and is looking for new home.

This week Fabio was flown to New Orleans for specialist treatment by leading veterinarian Allison Barca.

She told ABC that the dog was ‘making it on his own’, but appeared confident that her team would be able to alleviate his continuing pain and discomfort.

Dr Barca has experience with animal prosthetics, having helped to fit a Shetland pony with a new leg in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

And she said that Fabio is likely to require similar treatment, receiving artificial extensions to his limbs which will help his mobility.

‘I just think he needs something to help the stumps to feel comfortable as they remodel through life and to keep them protected from hitting the ground,’ she said.

‘You just can’t order a set of boots that are going to strap to his legs. They’re going to have to be altered to fit this little dog individually.’

The unfortunate pet will be housed at a rehabilitation home for injured dogs, and could soon join his new roommates at a second line parade in the city.

Another take on the story

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Four-year-old Fabio, a Maltese, is moving around Monday afternoon like he does most days, slowly but surely. But starting tomorrow, Fabio’s life will likely change forever; for the better.

“Fabio will fly to New Orleans and he will be examined by Dr. Allison Barca.  She’s put together of team of specialists to examine him,” said Joani Ellis of Florida Poodle Rescue.

His back legs hacked off just below the joint by someone who didn’t want him to jump over a backyard fence, Fabio has adapted and gets by at his own speed.

“Fabio does not need us.  Fabio’s making it on his own.  We’re just going to try to make it better for him,” said Dr. Barca by phone from New Orleans.

Dr. Barca was part of a group that outfitted Molly the Shetland pony with a prosthetic leg after Hurricane Katrina.  Barca says there’s several avenues of help to explore when it comes to Fabio.

“I would love to be waving a handkerchief and following Fabio in a second-line parade, that would be my dream,” Ellis said.

UPDATE: Wonky The Puppy Is Walking Tall After Physio Regime To Straighten Her Legs

“Remember I wrote about Wonky a few days ago? Someone abandoned her because of her condition? What they didn’t know is that she had a guardian angel watching over her! Now there are no need for words, the video tells it all. I’m so thrilled that in such a short time this little girl is walking normally….God bless her & all those at the Dogs Trust who changed her life completely. She has so much love to give…whoever ends up adopting this little angel will never regret it! I hope those that abandoned her, receive the karma they so deserve…very soon!”

An 11-week-old puppy has been saved from a life of disability by physiotherapists after her front legs failed to develop.

The puppy, which was nicknamed ‘Wonky’ due to her bent forelegs, has learned to walk again after two weeks intense physiotherapy.
Her rare condition was caused by her front leg tendons not developing properly after she was separated from her mother at an early age.
The Staffordshire bull terrier cross was found wandering on the streets of Bradford after being abandoned.
Staff at the Leeds Dogs Trust straighten Juliet‘s legs 30 times a day, to strengthen her muscles.

“OMG…how could anyone resist that sweet, beautiful, innocent face? I would have her tomorrow; if I wasn’t disabled myself! I’m sure there is a special person out there who can give this little girl the help, love &  support she needs. Hopefully they can get her back on her front legs, walking, by carrying on with the physiotherapy she is getting at the centre; ” The Dogs Trust” will help subsidise payment for her physiotherapy fee’s!”

This is Wonky, a poor puppy left with a heartbreaking disability after being dumped on the street as a baby, who now needs a new home where she will be loved.

The eleven-week-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross was given her unusual name because of severe problems with her malformed front legs developed because she was separated from her mother.

Experts say she desperately needs care and attention after being afflicted with horrific joint ‘knuckling’ that has left her unable to walk very well.

Wonky was found wandering the streets as a stray and was brought to Dogs Trust by a member of the public a fortnight ago.

With two underdeveloped front legs and her ‘un-traditional looks’, staff are worried she may struggle to find a new home.

Amanda Sands, Manager at Dogs Trust Leeds, said: ‘She’s had a very tough start in life. She was taken from her mother too early and was then having to fend for herself on the streets at just nine-weeks old.

‘She isn’t a traditionally pretty pooch but she’s a lovely girl with a great character.

‘We really hope people can see beyond appearances and someone can give her the fresh start she deserves – a new home where she’ll be loved and cared for.‘

Wonky is suffering from an extreme case of the condition known as knuckling of the carpal joints.

This is caused by contraction of the tendons which prevents the wrist joint from extending fully and means her front feet bend inwards because her tendons are too short.

‘It’s such a sad case because this is completely preventable if only she’d had the right love and care,’ Ms Sands said today.

‘She has not had the right supplements to enable her to grow properly and so her front legs are too weak.

‘We don’t know everything about her background but we think that she was removed from her mother too early and was then abandoned. She has not had the right nutrition and a poor diet has meant her front legs are underdeveloped.’

Since arriving at the centre on February 7, brave Wonky is already showing signs of improvement after receiving regular physiotherapy treatment to straighten her legs.

Ms Sands said: ‘Physiotherapy will really help to strengthen her muscles. We have to stretch her legs into a straight position 30 times twice a day. Hopefully in time her legs will begin to straighten to aid her walking.

‘She will need regular trips to the specialist vet to keep a track of her  progress.

‘At the minute she is able to walk but she rests her weight on her front joints as her legs are bent.

‘With the right treatment, she will hopefully be able to live a normal life and  do all the things a puppy should be able to enjoy.

‘At the minute, she struggles to run and can only be taken on very short walks  which is very sad to see.’

Staff at the centre are wanting to re-home Wonky and are looking for owners who  can continue her physiotherapy – with costs supplemented by Dogs Trust.

It is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 18 Rehoming Centres across the UK and one in Dublin. “I am a member of “Dogs Trust” as I think they do a great job of re-homing animals.”

Amanda Francis spokesman for the charity said: ‘Usually physical deformity is the result of unscrupulous breeders or they haven’t been properly looked after and most of the time it’s something that is completely preventable.’
