UPDATE: Memphis Man Who Killed Puppy By Trapping It In Dishwasher Sentenced To Prison

Posted: April 5, 2014

A Memphis man accused of putting his puppy, Daisy, into a running dishwasher has pleaded guilty of felony aggravated animal cruelty.

27-year-old Marcus Curry of Memphis has been sentenced to 16 months in prison. Aggravated animal cruelty can mean six-year prison sentence.

Marcus Curry of Memphis

Contractors doing work at the Eden Watersedge Apartments saw a German Shepherd puppy on an apartment porch. The puppy didn’t have water so one contractor told the Memphis man he needed to take better care of the puppy, reported WREG News.

The contractor said Marcus then took the puppy inside and about an hour later he witnessed Curry carry a duffle bag outside and put the bag in the dumpster.

One of the contractors, Henry Jones, who had given the puppy water earlier told WREG News, “I was thinking to myself ‘That must be the dog. I unzipped the bag and saw the dog and it was wet.” The puppy was dead. Authorities were notified. Curry was arrested.

According to a police affidavit, at one point, Curry told police officers he didn’t ever put the puppy into the dishwasher but that he did put the dead puppy into a bag and throw it into the dumpster.

Fox News reported that a witness told police that Curry admitted putting the dog in the dishwasher and saying he “left it in there too long.” The Memphis man eventually told police he did put the puppy in the dishwasher but only to keep it from going to the bathroom on the floor, reported WREG.

However, witnesses told the Memphis police that they saw him put the puppy in his dishwasher, turn the dishwasher on, and leave the dishwasher running.

A petition with 24,164 signatures on causes.com asked prosecutors toProsecute and Jail- Marcus Curry over the killing of his German Shepherd puppy. An additional petition with 7084 signatures on causes.com asked the Attorney General to “Give Marcus Curry maximum sentence for brutally killing Puppy!

Curry was also charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty by the grand jury according to the Shelby County District Attorney. The misdemeanor charges alleged Curry left the same puppy tied to the porch last June for several days with no noticeable food or water. Police said Marcus was also up on fraud charges for allegedly using his great aunt’s credit card without her authorization in the amount of $600.

Despite pleading guilty to the charge, in August of last year Marcus wrote a public testimony where he claims he is innocent:

“Imma real peaceful guy, that only wont to be a good farther, friend, brotha, sister, lover, husband, im not a dam D*M DOG KILLA. a lot of people lied on me, wat if it was da other way around and it happen to each and ever last one of yall. Everybody dat really knw me, knws wat kind of person I am. All my life in Memphis just been h*ll yall, cant trust a soul, not even yo own gurl smmh. So fb this is my testimony, and no matter wat happen I just wont yall to knw the truth, Memphis will make you look like a convict just to get paid, turn your good life into stress and pain. I tried my best and da lord knw I did, but sum reasons im allways around devils!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The public, however, is furious with the Memphis man.

The incidents allegedly occurred between June 18-26 at Curry’s apartment in the 2800 block of Meadowlake Drive.

He was indicted in October, but was not arrested until earlier this year when he was found at a motel. Shelby County District Attorney, Amy Weirich said the Memphis man pleaded guilty to felony charges of aggravated animal cruelty for killing his puppy by putting it in the dishwasher, The Jackson Sun reported.

UPDATE: Circus Malta: Petition Supporting Animal Circuses Gains 5,000 Signatures

Comments Off on UPDATE: Circus Malta: Petition Supporting Animal Circuses Gains 5,000 Signatures

Thursday 9 January 2014

Most animal charities & the public want to see a ban worldwide of wild animals being used in circuses. Now the owner of this circus is circulating his own petition to keep his Malta circus open. So please if you don’t agree with animals performing degrading tricks, kept behind bars & of course the cruelty that has been documented in circuses: PLEASE SIGN THE PETITIONS BELOW. We can’t let this circus continue, if it does through its petition, the flood gates for circuses using wild animals may open again; that would be tragic after all the hard work has been done to stop them!!

Circus promoter says 2013 could be last year for animal circuses in Malta due to the proposed ban.

But circus promoter Silvio Zammit has collected 5,000 signatures as part of a petition to overturn a proposal to ban animal circuses.

The circus has now moved to Ghajnsielem, Gozo, where Zammit hopes to continue collecting more signatures. The petition will then be passed on to the competent authorities.

Zammit, who has been bringing circuses to Malta for the past 16 years, said he could not allow the banning of animal circuses from Malta without taking any action.

“It was a personal initiative after finding out that the government had moved on to publish a White Paper proposing to ban animal circuses,” he said.

See all the animals, such as, Long horn cattle, Donkeys, Lama, Camels, Lions, Tigers, Zebra, Elephant, Giraffe, Baboon, Horses, Ponies, Donkeys performing pitiful & degrading acts; acts they would never do in the wild. The animal acts stop at 12 mins; then the human artists perform!I believe the only thing not seen is the Hippo; but is in a video below!!

Circo Orfei Floriana Malta 1st January 2012

Uploaded on 2 Jan 2012 – By levelone12

He argued that only 390 persons took part in the consultation process initiated by the government, of which 49% said they were against such a circus.

“We know that the majority of these were NGOs, and NGOs do not reflect popular opinion. I am doing this petition on my own. I know that there are many others who would like to sign it, but I have neither the time nor the manpower to go on a nation-wide petition,” Zammit said.

He said he was “very happy” with the number of signatures collected: “This shows that the Maltese do love the circus. They won’t flood the streets of Valletta with placards to support the circus.”

He also said that a number of MPs from both sides of the House visited Circo Orfei this winter. “Some came with their children while others accompanied their grandchildren. They thanked me for the level of the show and all said they had fun,” Zammit said.

He however refused to name them.

The debate as to whether Malta should ban animal circuses for good has been going on for a number of years, with animal rights NGOs insisting that circuses solely operate to maximise profits while completely disregarding the safety of the animals and the adverse effects they may impose.

Animal Rights Coalition said veterinarians only attend to the animal’s physical needs and as a result, the psychological issues brought about by the circuses are not being addressed.

With a number of countries moving to ban animal circuses for good, Zammit said in Italy alone there were 800 circuses. He said the UK was one of the countries which will stop animal circuses as from next year. “But this was the result of many circuses caught mistreating their animals,” he said, adding that the circus he brought to Malta did not see animals performing any tricks and only a minimal part of the show was dedicated to animals. My pic4

Zammit argued that the circus animals were born in captivity “and therefore they do not know otherwise. Their trainers threat them like their pets”.

He said Animal Welfare Department officials and veterinarians made regular checks to verify that the animals were well-kept.

Circo Orfei’s travelling team is made up of 60 people, whose living depends on the shows, Zammit said.

“This is their life. They are a community who live on the road and have been doing so for years on end. This is how they earn a living… their bread and butter,” he said.

The Animal Rights Coalition has also called for a full ban on dolphinaria and aquaria. The coalition has said it was unjust to deny dolphins the right to roam free in their natural habitat and called for the ban on dolphinariums as these restrict the creatures to a mere pool.

The Coalition also said that this should extend to aquaria as in this case, animals are likewise being “confined to cages and restricted from roaming in their natural habitat”.

But Zammit feels that two weights and two measures were being applied when talking about animal circuses and aquaria.

He also said that circuses gave people the opportunity to see animals which would otherwise require them to travel abroad to zoos or safaris.

He insisted that a proper discussion was required and said he agreed that animals like elephants, pandas and monkeys should be banned. “What we have in our circus are horses, ponies, donkeys and tigers,” he said, adding that tigers in captivity lived for an average of 25 years while those in the wild lived for 12 years.

Circo Orfei also has a hippo and an emu as part of their travelling repertoire.

Graphic Image: Puppy With Ears Cut Off Expected To Recover

Comments Off on Graphic Image: Puppy With Ears Cut Off Expected To Recover

UPDATE:  December 28, OKLAHOMA CITY – It’s a happy ending for a little puppy who was the victim of horrific animal abuse.

We first told you about “Sweet Baby Jones”, the pit bull puppy a few weeks ago. He was found with his ears cut off, left out in the freezing cold when he was just four weeks old.

Puppy recovering well after his ears were cut off & left abandoned

The Bella Foundation and Neel Veterinary Hospital nursed him back to health.

Now, Jones will be adopted by a family from Colorado who works with the organization Stopping BSL, a group that works to stop discrimination against pit bulls.

Members of The Bella Foundation are sad to see him go, but can’t think of a better family to place him with.

“His foster mom took such great care of him. He is doing so well on potty training, he plays well with other dogs.” Jessica McLaughlin said. “He’s going to forget about everything that happened to him before this and he’s going to live a wonderful life.”

Jones has had all of his shots, been neutered and finally had the stitches removed from his ears.

The Bella Foundation brought Jones to their adoption event on Saturday for one last public appearance before he goes home with his new family.

Jones will have two siblings, a chihuahua and another pit bull. The family says Jones will fit right in.

November 29 OKLAHOMA CITY – Staff at The Bella Foundation are trying to find the person responsible for cutting the ears off a 4-week-old pit bull puppy.

Puppy found in freezing cold with his ears cut off!!

The puppy was found wandering around near 23rd Street and I-44.

“He had blood covering from his ears all the way down his neck and even onto his legs. And it was frozen to his fur and was also just stuck to him.” Eric McCune, executive director of Bella, said. “We’re still trying to get it off now because he’s so little, you know, it hurts. And so we’ll probably have to wait a few more days and a few more baths to get the rest of it off of him.”

Today, he is doing better. Tevin Garner with The Bella Foundation is nursing him back to health and giving him a good dose of snuggles.

“It just absolutely breaks my heart to know what he was going through when it happened, to know that he was awake, and you know, just an innocent little puppy being abused like that.” She said.

Recovering well after being found abandoned & his ears cut off

“This little guy, his ears were done with no anaesthetic, no pain killer, probably with a pair of scissors. And then set down and left to heal on his own.” McCune said.

They nicknamed the puppy “Sweet Baby Jones.” Over the next few weeks, the pup will stay on painkillers and antibiotics. Then the vet will reshape and fix what is left of his ears.

Jones is just a small part of an even bigger problem though; they are worried there could be more puppies like him out there.

“I personally have never seen a litter of one puppy, especially pit bull puppies.” McCune said. “Usually there are 7 or 8, sometimes more. And so he probably has brothers and sisters that are in this same situation.”

Now they’re working to save other puppies from suffering the same abuse as Jones.

“All he wants to do is be with people and cuddle despite what other people have done to him.” Garner said.

As soon as Jones is well enough, he will be put up for adoption.

The Bella Foundation believes his litter mates are somewhere in the area of N.W. 23rd Street and I-44 and hope to find them soon.

If you have any information on who did this to Jones or where those other puppies are, call The Bella Foundation at 1-866-318-7387. Tips are completely anonymous.

Update On Puppy Thrown In Garbage: Women Gets Jail Sentence

Comments Off on Update On Puppy Thrown In Garbage: Women Gets Jail Sentence

In February a puppy’s life was saved when an Indiana garbage man noticed one of the bags he was tossing into the truck move.

Garby was thrown out with the garbage!

Now the woman Shemika T. Robinson, responsible  for tossing the puppy has been convicted of animal cruelty and will be serve 180 days in jail.

Garbage collector Mike Upchurch is the one responsible for saving the puppy’s life. He was throwing trash into his truck when he heard a whimpering.

Upchurch investigated the bags and found a shivering puppy covered in garbage in one of them. He quickly rushed the puppy into the truck’s cab to warm it up.

The puppy was starving, cold and dirty, but has since made a full recovery and is now living with his rescuer. Upchurch named the puppy Garby.

Shemika T. Robinson has been convicted of animal cruelty for throwing Garby in the trash. She is banned from owning any animals in the future and will serve 180 days in jail. Once released from jail she is required to complete 50 hours of community service at the Muncie Animal Shelter.

Doctors in Veterinary, Human Medicine Team to Give Burned Horse a Second Chance

Comments Off on Doctors in Veterinary, Human Medicine Team to Give Burned Horse a Second Chance

“This is amazing to say the least, & the owners of Northstar obviously love him like one of their own children; like I do my horses! Some owners would have just had him put down, but not Northstars parents! I truly hope all this works & Northstar will soon be able to go out into a field, lay down & have a good roll. I hope the bastards that set fire to him experience the same injuries at some point, however it happens, I just want them to feel what burn pain is; so may they rest in Hell!”

COLUMBUS, OhioThe unlikely pairing of an equine veterinarian and a burn surgeon is providing a second chance at a normal life for a horse that was doused in flammable liquid and set on fire late last summer.

Northstar, purposely set on fire, perpetrators not found

The Ohio State University doctors and their teams have partnered to perform two skin graft procedures on the American Paint Horse named Northstar, who suffered severe burns to almost half of his body when the abuse occurred.

The same instruments used in a typical human burn surgery were used for the horse’s grafting procedures. The clinicians removed ultrathin sheets of skin from Northstar’s chest and expanded them with a meshing tool before placing the grafts across an enormous wound spanning the horse’s back.

When he arrived in Columbus on Sept. 5, Northstar had exposed bone at the base of his neck as a result of the burns. Skin damage extended from his neck to the base of his tail and along both of his sides. No suspect has been identified in the case.

The doctors’ collaboration – not to mention the unusual size of the back wound – has provided a rare learning experience for both clinicians and their colleagues.

“There’s been a lot of trial and error with the challenges of how to bandage him, what the most appropriate antiseptic is for cleaning the wound bed, and the biology of burned tissue in a horse,” said Samuel Hurcombe, assistant professor of veterinary clinical sciences and the leader of Northstar’s care team.

Veterinary experts got the healing off to a good start with relentless wound management, a series of smaller skin grafts and the implantation of cell cultures in the wound bed. These procedures were performed to bring top-layer skin tissue to the central area of the expansive wound bed on Northstar’s neck and shoulders, where all his skin had burned away.

Surgeons treat horse like human burn victim

To address the large wound across the horse’s back, Hurcombe consulted longtime trauma and burn surgeon Larry Jones at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. The two observed one another’s surgeries and studied human- and veterinary-medicine journal articles before teaming to accelerate Northstar’s care.

Jones, associate professor of clinical surgery and director of the Burn Center at the medical center, led the two larger skin graft surgeries. Early on, he encountered a significant challenge: how deep to set the tool that would peel off the donor skin.

“We want to take the top layer of skin but we also need a portion of the second layer, the dermis,” he said. After Jones consulted with Hurcombe and the two conducted more research, “I knew I had to take a graft that’s about twice as thick as one I would take if I were operating on a human.”

The team then ran the graft through a mesher that cut holes in the graft skin and allowed for expansion of the graft to about four times its original size. “When the graft takes, the holes will fill in from skin cells growing from the edges,” Jones said.

They dressed the wounds with bandages containing medical-grade silver, which functions as an antibiotic, to speed healing of the grafts and the donor sites.

At this stage of the horse’s recovery, more than half of the initial wound is healed, with the repair resulting from both the various skin grafting procedures and normal closure along the edges of the damaged skin.

Burn victim, set on fire

Northstar will likely undergo a series of additional sheet graft surgeries to completely heal the wound. Multiple grafts are often required for extensive human burn injuries, as well.

“It’s a slow process but even in the time we’ve been caring for him, he has made remarkable progress,” said Hurcombe, a specialist in equine emergency and critical care. “From a welfare standpoint, his psychology is great and after what he’s gone through, the fact that he is still so trusting of people is pretty amazing.”

While he initially appeared to be a dark horse for recovery, Northstar persevered through weeks of daily cleansing and removal of dead and infected tissue followed by the application of antiseptics, honey, aloe and silver sulfadiazine cream, a common human burn treatment, to his damaged tissue.

In yet another application of human medicine in veterinary care, the team has treated Northstar with gabapentin (sold under the brand name Neurontin), a medication used for neuropathic pain in humans, to treat the severe itching and nerve-related pain that is typical in burn patients as they recover. “I take this medication for pain, I really hope it’s helping Northstar!!”

Northstar, who turned 7 in January, is a “young, naughty boy” and would love nothing more than to toss himself to the ground and roll on his back to scratch that persistent itch, Hurcombe said. So the horse is gently tethered to keep him standing and he wears a cradle that immobilizes his neck several hours throughout the day. He is also covered in bandages and wears what is called a full-body “sleazy” covering that is typically seen on show horses.

The clinicians hope that Northstar will have a complete layer of skin coverage by his 8th birthday. The road ahead is a long one, both physicians acknowledge. The location of his back wound is a tricky one to treat because even with secure bandages from his neck to his tail, the horse anatomy in the location of the burn is such that Northstar’s every movement slightly disturbs the grafted areas.

“His skin graft take is a little less than what I am used to in humans,” Jones noted. “But as Dr. Hurcombe reminds me, considering his hospital bed is in a barn, he is doing very well.

“I view Northstar in the same way as I do any of my other patients. I just want him to get better and go on and live his life as a horse.”

Northstar’s owners live in northwestern Pennsylvania, where police have investigated the burning incident as a criminal case.

“All the owners want is for him to be happy, pain-free and able to live his life with his pasture mates,” Hurcombe said. “He is bright and alert, he interacts with people and he can eat and drink and do all the things that a horse can normally do as far as function. And he has been telling us through his behaviors that he wants to live. ”

UPDATE: Elizabeth Lewis found guilty of animal cruelty in death of pit bull Bruiser

Comments Off on UPDATE: Elizabeth Lewis found guilty of animal cruelty in death of pit bull Bruiser

Guilty; but I think her sentence is pitiful. Just look at that face & remember it, that’s the face of an animal abuser! These people are heartless & self-centred, they don’t’ give a shit about living sentient beings. They are so cruel & callous, they walk past their pets each day, not giving a dam that they are starving, cold, injured etc. So instead of sending them to a cosy prison (often better than their own abode) with a cosy bed, food etc. I personally I think it would do more good & certainly be cheaper, to just drop them off on a deserted island, surrounded by sharks so they can’t get away. No food, water or protection! Because that’s the only way they are ever going to get close, to how their pet felt! See how they bloody well like that, I bet there wouldn’t be half as many who would abuse an animal again!!”

Video at link below. HAMILTON, Ohio — A Hamilton woman charged with animal cruelty in the death of her dog was found guilty Tuesday after pleading no contest.

In February, Elizabeth Lewispit bull, Bruiser, was found emaciated and was later euthanized to end his suffering.

Elizabeth Lewis, 19, of Hamilton

Lewis, 19, previously faced an animal cruelty charge for the alleged mistreatment of Bruiser. The dog was taken to an animal shelter in August.

At that time, he weighed 17 pounds and appeared to be malnourished. She was found not guilty of the first charge after a bench trial.

Animal rights supporters created a Facebook page in memory of the pit bill, called “Justice For Bruiser.”

The group, and the online response surrounding it, caused the case to garner national attention and dozens of protestors locally.

Tuesday, Lewis was found guilty of animal cruelty and failure to file for a dog tag. She was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 90 of which were stayed.

She owes $646 in court costs and faces two years of supervised community service.

Borko Has Wheels

Our media trip to Bulgaria is planned for June where together with Wetnose Animal Aid and Norton Animal Rescue Foundation, we will bring Justice for Borko with a film crew and British presenters Lorraine Chase and Wendy Turner Webster to highlight the plight of dogs like Borko and make a documentary about the animal welfare situation in Bulgaria and what can be done about it.

In other news, Dr Litov had his first court victory on 25th April when the Judge suspended the eviction notice, until the end of the trial, and now this week at the Administrative Court, the Regional Health Authority Inspector gave evidence and confirmed that all inspections carried out in the last few years showed no violations justifying an eviction.

The Court’s final ruling will be at the end of June, so please sign and keep sharing our Justice 4 Borko petition – we have 56k signatures so far – we need to aim for a target of 100k signatures for it to be taken seriously by the Government. Sentencing Delayed For Man Who Killed His Dog With A Bat

Comments Off on Sentencing Delayed For Man Who Killed His Dog With A Bat

“I know I said I wasn’t going to write extra or edit posts etc.; enabling me to get more posts out…but in some cases I just can’t keep quiet & this is one of them!”

“This is absolutely ridiculous…stop wasting taxpayers money & throw the sick bxxxxxd in jail for a very long time. We’re talking about an alcoholic druggy, bashing the head of a dog in with a baseball bat…then throwing the dog in a dumpster to die! Yet that isn’t the issue!! He did it alright, but it’s to be proved if Whitlock caused “undue pain & suffering”…erm der…if anyone has any doubt on whether that dog suffered, then that person should get someone to whack them over the head with a baseball bat several times; then say otherwise!

“How the hell can anyone say; that poor dog didn’t suffer?? If Whitlock wanted to kill Captain (dog) because he thought he was suffering, why didn’t he kill him; instead of dumping the dogs body in a dumpster???”

” Whitlock has been diagnosed with psychosis and has showed signs of paranoia and schizophrenia, exacerbated by alcohol and marijuana. WTF…never heard anything so stupid in all my life…of course the dog bloody suffered…terribly in agony!! But not only that…the streets would be a lot safer, with this pathetic excuse on 2 legs; being slammed up in jail!!” R.I.P Captain x

A 26-year-old Vancouver man who admitted that he killed his German shepherd with a baseball bat last July will have to wait awhile longer before finding out his sentence.

Provincial Court Judge David St. Pierre reserved his sentencing decision on Tuesday for Brian E. Whitlock, who has pleaded guilty to causing undue pain and suffering to an animal. No new court date was set, but St. Pierre said he hoped to conclude the case as early as next week.

During Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, Crown counsel Jordan Hauschildt said Whitlock should receive a sentence of four to six months in jail, less time served. Whitlock has already spent 45 days in jail.

The court was told that Whitlock admitted hitting his dog Captain in the head with a baseball bat four or five times as hard as he could. Hauschildt said Whitlock did not account for several puncture wounds on the dog’s body. “That is an abhorrent way for an animal to die,” Hauschildt said.

Hauschildt told the court that the case has generated significant media coverage, as well as two online petitions that have generated more than 130,000 signatures calling for justice for Captain. Another petition circulated by the Animal Advocates Society of B.C. garnered 750 signatures calling on the court to give Whitlock the maximum sentence of five years in jail. Hauschildt said Whitlock has also received death threats.

Several women in the courtroom cried openly during Hauschildt’s description of Captain’s death.

“I can’t believe the following quote from the trial…”

During the hearing, St. Pierre said the issue was not whether Whitlock had the right under the law to euthanize his dog. He did. Instead, it must be decided whether he caused undue pain and suffering when he killed Captain. Whitlock has also pleaded guilty to other charges of mischief and assault. “How stupid, it’s a no brainer; of course he caused pain & suffering!”

Brian Whitlock, 26, threw Captain the dog into a dumpster & left him to die!!

The court was told that Whitlock believed Captain was poisoned after eating something, which caused him to behave erratically. “Its more likely that Whitlock was behaving erratically from booze & drugs; perhaps the dog was acting in self defence from Whitlock…does anyone know what state Whitlock was in on the night it happened??”

He said he kept Captain in a separate room because he did not feel safe being with the dog. “This beautiful angel was not taken in as a police dog; because he was too friendly!!”

He decided to kill Captain because he felt the dog was his responsibility. He did not take him to the SPCA because he couldn’t afford it and because he was afraid of what Captain might do to other people.

Defence lawyer Tony Paisana said Whitlock has been diagnosed with psychosis and has showed signs of paranoia and schizophrenia, exacerbated by alcohol and marijuana.

Paisana said Whitlock loved Captain and slept with Captain every night. After he hit Captain with a baseball bat, he placed the dog – still alive – in a dumpster, wrapped in the blanket they slept in together.

“He believed his dog was suffering and that it was up to him to put Captain out of his misery,” Paisana said. “But he didn’t put him out of his misery did he?? He left him to suffer, a slow agonising death!”

Comments Off on Breaking News: DPP Takes Over The Dog Porn Scandal Case

Earlier, it was reported that Christopher Weissenrieder and the group of girls alleged to have been taking part in dog pornography were not going to be charged with bestiality when they were arraigned before a Mombasa Law Court Tuesday morning.

The Mombasa court even released the girls on a KSh100,000 bond each while Chris was released on a Ksh1 million bond and their case set to be heard in July.

However, the Director of Public Prosecution has taken up the case and is said to have added the charge of “Unnatural act with a dog.”

Announcing this new development, blogger/journalist Dennis Itumbi lauded the DPP on the move.

Earlier, there was discomfort among Kenyans who aired their grievances via social media after it became apparent that both Chris and the girls were not going to face bestiality charges.
