From December to February 2014, a Mercy For Animals Canada investigator worked at a Délimax veal factory farm in Pont-Rouge, Quebec. Our hidden camera captured horrific animal cruelty and neglect, including:

• Calves crammed into feces-covered wooden boxes barely larger than their own bodies
• Baby animals chained by the neck, unable to even turn around or lie down comfortably for their entire lives
• Animals driven mad from boredom and stress, denied even their most basic natural behaviours
• Workers violently kicking, punching, and tormenting baby animals
• Animals painfully stuck in the wooden slats of their crates
• Sick and injured animals left to suffer and slowly die in their own filth without proper veterinary care

EXPERT OPINIONS

After reviewing the undercover footage, Dr. John Webster, Professor of Animal Husbandry at the University of Bristol, and Europe’s leading expert on dairy cattle welfare, stated: “In all my experience, this is the worst, cruellest system that I have ever seen, in every sense, housing, health and stockmanship. [T]he system as seen on the video is now illegal in Europe, both in regard to individual housing, and denial of access to solid feed containing sufficient digestible fibre.”

Dr. Sara Shields agreed, concluding: “Veal crates are the epitome of a poor animal housing system, and it is almost shocking to see them still being used… Studies have shown that calves tethered in stalls have higher physiological stress responses than those kept in groups or in pairs.”

DITCH VEAL, DITCH DAIRY

Veal is a direct by-product of the dairy industry. Since they will never produce milk, male calves born into the dairy industry are ripped away from their mothers’ sides shortly after birth and end up in veal factory farms like this one.

These calves spend their short, wretched lives languishing in their own waste inside a tiny wooden box. They never get to see the sun, breathe fresh air, feel the grass beneath their feet, walk, run, play, or do anything that makes life worth living. Their short lives are filled with misery, violence, and deprivation.

Although cruelty and violence are standard practice for Canada’s veal industry, caring consumers can help end the needless suffering of calves and other farmed animals by choosing a compassionate vegan diet.

“If you cant go fully vegan then help by trying to be a vegetarian & don’t drink milk (It’s made for animals offspring, not humans) drink soya milk instead. I drink Soya milk, Almond & Hazelnut are my favourites. They taste great to drink when cold & have quite a sweet taste (ditch the sugar) so it’s great in coffee & on cereals. Think about it, do you really want to be a party to the horrific & abusive ways, theses sentient little babies are kept in? Would you deny them the right to be with their mother’s??  Many people think being vegetarian means eating nut cutlets, rice & beans; personally I hate that type of stuff. Whatever recipes that require meat, can be made just as well with Quorn.  Go to my Pinterest site to see recipes made with Quorn & also the pre-made Quorn burgers, mince, chicken etc. The Linda  McCartney range of meat free foods are also delicious, especially the sausages! My daughter isn’t vegan or vegetarian like me; but she eats what I do; with no complaints because she finds it so tasty!

Illegal slaughter house in Kamptee poses risk – The Times of India

NAGPUR: A state-level committee appointed on the direction of Supreme Court has recommended action against Kamptee Municipal Council (KMC) for allowing an illegal slaughter house, said to be one of the biggest in the state.

The state’s animal husbandry department was requested by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), under the ministry of environment and forest, to conduct random inspections of at least 10 licensed slaughter houses every six months as per Supreme Court directions under the provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.

Accordingly, a six-member committee consisting of Dr S B Baseshankar, Dr D V Kadoo, Dr K S Bhide, Dr N N Zade, and two co-opted members of AWBI S N Kapoor and Abodh Aras inspected two slaughter houses – Bhandewadi and Kamptee.

On the slaughter house at Kamptee operating in Bhaji Mandi, the panel recommended AWBI to issue notice to the district collector and chief officer of KMC to stop the illegal slaughter of large animals. The panels said around 300 animals are slaughtered here daily ostensibly for domestic consumption but the meat is transported outside illegally. It is exported to Middle-East via Mumbai.

“The illegal business is thriving with blessings of local police and officials. Electric slicers have been installed to slaughter animals. It is shocking how MSEDCL has issued power meters for slicers in residential area,” asks local Congress leader Narendra Sharma.

Sharma says police express helplessness citing law and order problem. “But is the place above people’s health and environment? Water bodies are being polluted and people’s health is at risk,” Sharma said.

Cattle slaughter is allowed for domestic consumption but over the years meat export has become a lucrative business. The slaughter has no checks or certification from any authorized vet. Till the visit of the committee, municipal council used to issue ante-mortem certificates by a vet appointed by commissioner of animal husbandry.

However, ahead of the committee’s visit in April, the chief officer of KMC wrote to animal husbandry department informing there is no large animal slaughter house in Kamptee. Chief officer Ravindra Pandher says plans are afoot to shift the slaughter house outside the city.

KMC vice-president Shahajan Safahat admits it is a nuisance and not acceptable. “Earlier cattle was slaughtered for livelihood but now stakes are higher as beef is being exported. The number of cattle killed certainly doesn’t match local consumption. The slaughter house needs to be shifted elsewhere as it poses serious hazards,” Safahat says.

BJP MLA from Kamptee Chandrashekhar Bawankule says, “I’ve raised the issue several times in the House but the government is doing nothing. A group of 24 NGOs plan to file a petition against the slaughter house,” he says.

Of late, the traders have installed equipment even in households to bring every body part of the animals to use. “The processes to extract oil and cleaning skins creates stench in the area,” Bawankule said.

The MLA says police do not want to take action. Daily five truckloads of beef is transported from Kamptee but police cannot see it.

Owners of Anne the circus elephant go on trial for animal cruelty

The Northamptonshire owners of a circus elephant called Anne are to go on trial charged with causing unnecessary suffering.

Bobby and Moira Roberts will go on trial at Corby Magistrates’ Court.

The couple are accused of keeping Anne, a 58-year-old elephant brought from Sri Lanka to the Bobby Roberts Super Circus in Peterborough in the 1950s, chained to the ground at all times.

They are also accused of failing to prevent an employee from repeatedly beating Anne.

The pair, of Brook Farm, Oundle, deny causing the elephant unnecessary suffering, failing to take reasonable steps to prevent an employee from causing unnecessary suffering and failing to ensure the elephant’s needs were met.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) took over the prosecution of Mr and Mrs Roberts from Animal Defenders International (ADI) “given the public concern over the case”.

The charges, brought under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, were originally the focus of a private prosecution by Animal Defenders International (ADI), a worldwide animal welfare organisation, following its undercover investigation and filming between January 21 and February 15.

But ADI’s legal representatives contacted the CPS, asking it to take over the prosecution, and Jan Creamer, ADI’s chief executive, has called it a landmark test case.

Arthritic Anne is now living at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire to see out her days in a 13-acre paddock, with her owners’ consent.

The trial is listed until Friday and will move to Kettering Magistrates’ Court from Tuesday on wards.

Madurai civic body draws flak from People For Animals for dog cruelty

MADURAI: The city health officer has assured that the contract given to a private party for sterilization of dogs would be cancelled with immediate effect after the People For Animals(PFA) charged the Madurai Corporation with cruelty to street dogs that were captured for the purpose of neutering and vaccination.

S Sivakumar, secretary, People for Animals, says the Madurai Corporation’s Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ABCARV) centre in Sellur drew his attention following reports that the dogs brought here were being neglected and left to die by the authorities. Many of them were more interested in the number game of showing they had achieved their target by catching the animals rather than performing the task itself.

“I came to the centre on Friday morning and found three dogs dead and about four more in their last stage and contacted the Madurai district collector, who immediately asked the corporation to take action,” he said.

Sivakumar says that the neutering of animals has to be done by qualified doctors of the Animal Husbandry department in the presence of animal welfare associations. “The Madurai Corporation has instead given this job to a contractor Murugesan, who lives across the centre, without any knowledge on animal welfare,” he said.

This private contractor has employed three local dog catchers, including Jayamurugan and Jayakumar. He pays them Rs 50 for each dog captured, when the government pays Rs 445 for the neutering and vaccination of a single animal.

Animal welfare board steps in to end castration

“What a shame the same can’t be done for pigs or other animals that go through painful procedures without anesthetic just to reduce over heads & costs!”

Chennai:

Noting that a “crude” way of cattle castration persisted in the country which amounted to cruelty, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has written to the Veterinary Council of India seeking to make sedation of cattle mandatory during the process. 

AWBI Chairman Dr R M Kharb has written recently to VCI, saying the “crude” method of restraint and castration in many veterinary polyclinics and hospitals was often performed on the animal by casting it on the ground and then using a Burdizzo castrator to crush the spermatic cord.

“This crude method carried without the use of sedatives or anaesthetics causes the animal to experience immense pain, fear and stress, which amounts to cruelty as per Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960,” he said in the letter.

This, therefore, was a “punishable offence.”

Stressing the need for sedatives on the animals, he said they reduce or even eliminate fear and pain during castration and options include short-acting local anaesthetics to longer-acting pain-relief drugs.

All states Vetrinary Councils and Directors, State Animal Husbandry be advised to direct government veterinary hospitals to ensure castrations were performed using sedations, he said.

The Animal Husbandry departments of all state governments were advised to delineate a standard operating procedure (SOP) for field castrations in large animals, which should include use of sedatives anaesthesia and to create inventories of drugs and equipment for this purpose, failure of which “calls for strict action,” under the PCA Act, 1960 he said.

Meanwhile, Animal rights advocacy group, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India Director of Veterinary Affairs Dr Manilal Valliyate welcomed the move saying it will benefit both the bulls and the cattle-owners.
