THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION IS FAILING EUROPEAN ANIMALS

Comments Off on THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION IS FAILING EUROPEAN ANIMALS

When meat is imported into the European Union the law stipulates that the animal must have been slaughtered in line with EU legislation.

However, when EU animals are exported, the same rules are not afforded to them and instead they can face brutal treatment and long drawn out slaughter.

Every year three million European animals are sent on long, stressful journeys to be fattened or slaughtered outside the EU. A vast number of these go to the Middle East where Compassion’s recent investigation, in partnership with Animals Australia, has uncovered immeasurable suffering.

Please take a moment to watch the film and slideshow below to find out more about this deplorable trade. Be warned; some of the film is distressing to watch, but it’s essential concerned citizens find out where European animals are ending their journeys.

Take action against the EU’s cruel live animal export trade

Please take a moment to watch and share our investigation. Warning: Due to its upsetting nature, you may need to verify that you are over 18 to watch the film.

When European farm animals are exported to non-EU countries every shred of protection they once received in their place of birth is rendered meaningless.

After enduring long, exhausting journeys by land and sea they may face terrifying ordeals at slaughter.

Animals are dragged by their limbs, bound up with ropes, pinned down by groups of men, beaten with metal rods, suspended upside down for extended periods of time, and eventually slaughtered in unacceptable ways that leave them conscious for many minutes after having their throats cut.

The European Commission has the power to take steps to stop this, but as each day passes without action more and more animals continue to suffer.

  • The European Commission must work towards ending the live export trade and if necessary replacing it with a trade in meat.
  • While a trade in exporting live animals continues, the European Commission must implement a scheme that will guarantee exported animals are treated in ways that prevent the worst of the suffering.
  • The European Commission must provide practical support to countries that import live animals from the EU in order that they can improve transport, handling and slaughter methods. This will not only improve the welfare of EU animals but also of any other animals slaughtered in those countries.

Please take action today. Email the Commission and call for an end to this suffering.

“Dear God…this is no slaughterhouse; its a torture chamber. NO animal should be treated like an inanimate object, incapable of any feelings. Having to watch their fellow beings being slaughtered right in front of them is despicable & in total contradiction of updated slaughterhouse rules. Animals feel pain & fear just as we do, if a slaughterhouse like this was found to be operating in England etc. it would be shut down immediately! So please send the email at the link below; these animals need our help, our voices NOW!”

Animals from all over the world end up in Beirut Public Slaughterhouse, Karantina. Sheep and cattle are exported live from countries in the European Union such as France, the Czech Republic and Spain (where they have legal protection), and end up here. Our Investigations Unit visited Beirut Public Slaughterhouse, and what they found was unimaginable.

Please email the Lebanese Agriculture Minister. Help get this hellish place shut down.

Our investigators are still trying to come to terms with what they’they’ve seen.Below is an investigator’s account of their visit. Please be warned; what you are about to read is distressing.

The slaughterhouse is chaos. Everything is coated in a layer of blood, faeces and body parts. The slaughter area is heaving with people, live animals and slaughtered bodies. The sounds and smells are overwhelming.

Men grab defenceless sheep by the fleece or back leg. They fall to their knees and are forcefully dragged, one by one, to the slaughter line. Cattle are dragged by ropes around their necks. When they try to resist restraint they are yelled at and beaten viciously with metal rods. The animals are visibly terrified and in their frantic attempts to escape they slip, trip and fall, slamming their heads into the concrete floor.

Groups of sheep are forced to jump over dead bodies and wide gutters full of blood. They desperately try to force their way away from the bodies of other sheep they have just watched being slaughtered. Cows are left suspended fully-conscious by one leg for long periods of time, their faces resting in pools of other animals’ blood. They watch animals being slaughtered all around them. I wonder if they realize it will soon be their turn?

Northern Irelands Only Horse Slaughtering House Stops

Comments Off on Northern Irelands Only Horse Slaughtering House Stops

“This might just be about the shortest post I have ever done, but it’s certainly one that’s made me the happiest, hence the slideshow of noble equines! Just a shame more can’t follow suit!! “Seriously, look at the beautiful, graceful equines below; then tell me why anyone; would want to eat one?? I’d bet every breed of horse below, has gone to a slaughterhouse, somewhere in the world; often looking as good as they do in the pictures! It’s not just the old & sick horses they slaughter, they want nice fit, healthy horses too!!”

Published on 14/04/2013 11:39

THE only approved horseslaughtering house in Northern Ireland has stopped killing horses, the Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill has revealed.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

She explained that the Armagh plant asked the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to remove its authorisation and stopped killing horses at the end of January.

“There was one slaughter plant in County Armagh approved by the FSA for equine slaughter,” she explained.

“This establishment is also approved for the slaughter of cattle and sheep. It ceased slaughtering horses completely on 25th January 2013 and has asked the FSA to completely remove their authorisation to slaughter equines.”

She said this was the only establishment approved by the FSA to slaughter horses in Northern Ireland in recent times.

VERY GRAPHIC VIDEO: Sheep Farmer Calls For Pakistan Boycott

Comments Off on VERY GRAPHIC VIDEO: Sheep Farmer Calls For Pakistan Boycott

“The barbaric F-ing pigs, they could at least have used sharp knives…Jesus Christ, I was willing them to get in & pull out the live ones, which they did, I thought yes, they are merciful…but then they proceeded to hack at their necks again with a blunt blade. This is just not good enough, imagine if the UK or US did anything like this, there would be bloody uproar! The time has come for animals raised on certain land, should be slaughtered on that land, pre-packed or frozen…then shipped off…I see no other way around it, that will stop the animals from suffering. If the way they where killing those animals was Kosher or halal, then its the most gruesome form of slaughter ever & shouldn’t be allowed…tradition or not.”

“If the book said all new-born baby boys should be slaughtered at age 12 months, do you think they would still be doing it, because it’s one of their so-called religions?? No I doubt it, well not without hassle from every other Country in the land! Why would any god want the blood of animals to appease them? It’s sickening & needs to bloody stop…you don’t even have to be animal lover to be disgusted with the way the sheep were disposed of. I can for-see some horrific plague or disease coming their way very soon, from the dumped carcasses. I wonder how many poor people,  actually thought about or actually  jumped in the ditch to pull out a carcass to feed themselves? Just thinking out load, sorry”

Pakistan should be permanently boycotted as a market for Australian live exports, a West Australian sheep farmer says.

Sheep awaiting a cull in Pakistan

Bob Ilffa, from the Wheatbelt town of Newdegate, made the comment as the industry braced for an ABC Four Corners program on the recent inhumane slaughter of about 22,000 Australian sheep in Pakistan on health concerns.

The sheep were in limbo for over a month after they were rejected in Bahrain, but further health fears in Pakistan led to them being brutally killed – in some cases buried alive – in two stages.

The culls came after repeated proof by independent veterinarians that the sheep were healthy.

The Fremantle-based exporter Wellard expressed shock when the second cull was ordered on October 20, despite promises from local authorities a day earlier that the remaining sheep would be slaughtered humanely.

The pledge came after the company agreed to drop a court injunction seeking to overturn the government-ordered cull.

Wellard immediately suspended exports to Pakistan, which had only ever been considered a contingent market.

Sheepmeat Council of Australia said it was an isolated, unusual turn of events that led to a totally unacceptable outcome.

But Mr Iffla went a step further, saying he would never send sheep to Pakistan again.

“There’s no way my sheep will ever be going to Pakistan,” he told AAP on Monday.

Mr Iffla said he was in agreement with animal liberationists in calling for the Pakistan market to be snubbed, but did not believe an end to live exports elsewhere was feasible, given the need among many nations to secure protein via imports.

He said he was extremely disappointed with the way the sheep had been killed, especially considering a modern abattoir was readily accessible.

Instead, the animals were clubbed and had their throats roughly slashed in a dusty feedlots.

Pakistan has done the wrong thing by the industry,” Mr Iffla said.

“It’s absolutely appalling behaviour by the Pakistanis, who I don’t believe we can continue to deal with (the country) because it’s just going to wreck the whole live animal trade.”

Mr Iffla said his sheep were currently breeding so another wave of lambs was on the way, but after that, he would rethink his business, producing less meat or even focusing on agriculture. “I don’t know where we’re going,” he said.

“I’m certainly thinking of changing my program to some degree because if we can’t make the profit out of live sheep in the manner that we have been, we’re going to have to diversify into other areas.”

The Queensland Greens reiterated calls to ban live exports, saying it was not within Australia’s power to control what happened to livestock once they were outside the country.

Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon wants the federal government to end the trade through the Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill 2012, but that appears destined to fail in the Senate.

Labor senator Glenn Sterle last month said the Greens were suggesting that with abattoirs back in the north and a boxed meat market in place, everything would be “tickety-boo”.

Mr Iffla also said Australia should stop providing aid to Pakistan because of the cull.

Live export disaster in Pakistan [WARNING UN-Edited Version disturbing vision]

“Details below taken from the You tube version”

See the truth behind the biggest live export tragedy in history. PAKISTAN 2012. As seen on Four Corners.

Live animal export is an inherently cruel trade, which is why it is opposed by every animal protection organisation throughout the world. It continues for one reason only: profit. What might happen, if exported animals were deemed ‘unfit’ for human consumption and lost all of their economic value? It happened recently in Pakistan. The reality will shock you.

Kosher and Halal slaughter unconstitutional in Poland?

Comments Off on Kosher and Halal slaughter unconstitutional in Poland?

Poland’s Attorney General says the practice of Kosher and Halal ritual slaughter violates the nation’s animal protection act.

Andrzej Seremet has now submitted an application to Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, a supervisory judicial body that resolves disputes in the country’s laws, so that the matter can be reviewed.

Seremet was requested to investigate the matter by a number of non-governmental organisations including the Viva! Animal Rights Foundation.

According to Polish law, animals must be stunned prior to being slaughtered.

However, when butchering animals to create halal meat, Muslims traditionally follow the rite of killing the animals with a single cut to the throat, with no stunning beforehand.

The same process is applied by Jews so as to create kosher meat.

Although Polish law holds that animals must be stunned before being slaughtered, an exception in the law allows this to be waived where ritual slaughter is concerned.

Robert Hernand, spokesman for the Attorney General, told the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily that the Ministry of Agriculture had “exceeded its legal rights” by adopting this exception.

Nevertheless, during the Conference of European Rabbis in Poland in 2011, President Bronislaw Komorowski appeared to defend the practice by speaking out against Dutch plans to outlaw ritual slaughter.

Poland’s head of state said the Dutch bill “targets the Muslim and Jewish community” and represents “a crisis of tolerance” in Europe.

At present, an EU directive on animal slaughter calls for stunning prior to the kill, but the directive allows for exceptions where ritual slaughter is concerned.

Sweden has banned outright kills made without the animal being stunned beforehand, as have non EU states Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

Holland has yet to pass legislation on the matter.

Illegal slaughter house in Kamptee poses risk – The Times of India

Comments Off on Illegal slaughter house in Kamptee poses risk – The Times of India

NAGPUR: A state-level committee appointed on the direction of Supreme Court has recommended action against Kamptee Municipal Council (KMC) for allowing an illegal slaughter house, said to be one of the biggest in the state.

The state’s animal husbandry department was requested by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), under the ministry of environment and forest, to conduct random inspections of at least 10 licensed slaughter houses every six months as per Supreme Court directions under the provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.

Accordingly, a six-member committee consisting of Dr S B Baseshankar, Dr D V Kadoo, Dr K S Bhide, Dr N N Zade, and two co-opted members of AWBI S N Kapoor and Abodh Aras inspected two slaughter houses – Bhandewadi and Kamptee.

On the slaughter house at Kamptee operating in Bhaji Mandi, the panel recommended AWBI to issue notice to the district collector and chief officer of KMC to stop the illegal slaughter of large animals. The panels said around 300 animals are slaughtered here daily ostensibly for domestic consumption but the meat is transported outside illegally. It is exported to Middle-East via Mumbai.

“The illegal business is thriving with blessings of local police and officials. Electric slicers have been installed to slaughter animals. It is shocking how MSEDCL has issued power meters for slicers in residential area,” asks local Congress leader Narendra Sharma.

Sharma says police express helplessness citing law and order problem. “But is the place above people’s health and environment? Water bodies are being polluted and people’s health is at risk,” Sharma said.

Cattle slaughter is allowed for domestic consumption but over the years meat export has become a lucrative business. The slaughter has no checks or certification from any authorized vet. Till the visit of the committee, municipal council used to issue ante-mortem certificates by a vet appointed by commissioner of animal husbandry.

However, ahead of the committee’s visit in April, the chief officer of KMC wrote to animal husbandry department informing there is no large animal slaughter house in Kamptee. Chief officer Ravindra Pandher says plans are afoot to shift the slaughter house outside the city.

KMC vice-president Shahajan Safahat admits it is a nuisance and not acceptable. “Earlier cattle was slaughtered for livelihood but now stakes are higher as beef is being exported. The number of cattle killed certainly doesn’t match local consumption. The slaughter house needs to be shifted elsewhere as it poses serious hazards,” Safahat says.

BJP MLA from Kamptee Chandrashekhar Bawankule says, “I’ve raised the issue several times in the House but the government is doing nothing. A group of 24 NGOs plan to file a petition against the slaughter house,” he says.

Of late, the traders have installed equipment even in households to bring every body part of the animals to use. “The processes to extract oil and cleaning skins creates stench in the area,” Bawankule said.

The MLA says police do not want to take action. Daily five truckloads of beef is transported from Kamptee but police cannot see it.

Footage that Compassion has recently been given of farm animal slaughter and transportation is the worst we have ever seen. It shows profoundly disturbing treatment of animals. The majority of the footage is from Egypt. But, sadly we know this is not an isolated case. In recent years Compassion has reported on cruel slaughter practices in a number of countries. Please join us today in taking a stand against this cruelty.

We have made the footage into a short film, with a voiceover explaining the content. Please click here to read more about the kind of content that is contained before deciding whether you wish to view the film. Please note this description is graphic and may be upsetting.

Act now: Send the email below to the Egyptian Ambassador in the UKEgypt is a member of the OIE and has signed up to its guidelines on slaughter. Everything in the footage is in breach of those guidelines. Our email calls on Egypt to live up to their commitment and ensure their slaughter practices do meet the OIE guidelines.

The following  footage is a shocking reminder of the extent to which farm animals are still treated as unfeeling commodities. More than ever the world needs Compassion and our supporters to keep fighting and to keep taking a stand against this inhumanity. We can make a difference. Please consider making a donation to ensure we can continue the daily fight against cruel farming, transport and slaughter.

Please Note – I have attached the video purely for those who may not have a You Tube account, not sure if it will work though!..be warned, it is very graphic! But how we can hope to help these animals, if we are not aware of how they are being treated.

If you wish to view the film, which is very distressing and upsetting, you can watch it here. The film is behind an age restriction on youtube, so you will be required to sign in.

The Butcher Next Door – Why the rise of DIY urban animal slaughter is bad for people and animals.

Comments Off on The Butcher Next Door – Why the rise of DIY urban animal slaughter is bad for people and animals.

When Armageddon strikes, it’s a safe bet that Herrick Kimball will be serving chicken. Known asthe Deliberate Agrarian, Kimball grew up “a sissified suburban kid” but decided at the age of 41 to toughen up, drop out of the corporate food system, and seek rural self-sufficiency. Slaughtering and butchering chickens—a multitude of chickens—is central to Kimball’s evangelical quest to liberate himself from the corrupting influence of imported food. Culinarily, he’s unplugged. Plugged in, however, is Kimball’s computer, the pulpit from which he bangs out the gospel of poultry. His tutorial on how to properly butcher a chicken has earned well over a million hits.

Decentralizing the act of animal slaughter in the name of taking back the food chain has an empowering ring to it. In reality, it’s a fad rife with trouble. Advocates are quick to justify urban farming on the grounds that the industrial food system is broken. Compassionate carnivores aim to bypass the abattoir, eliminate the distance between farm and fork, and take full responsibility for the animals they eat.

Do-it-yourself butchery is said to help eliminate food deserts, empower ethnic groups to maintain cultural traditions, and minimize animal suffering. It’s billed as safer than industrial meat processing on both an environmental and a human scale. These arguments may sound convincing, but they obscure a host of problems that result when urban backyards are transformed into slaughterhouses.

The most obvious concern relates to quality of life. Not every urban dweller wants to live next door to a stable of farm animals. In Oakland, Calif., one resident whose home abuts a backyard farm housing dozens of animals was recently kept up all night by the moaning of a dying a goat (who had eaten poison accidentally left out by the “farmer”), which you can listen to here:

Neighbors eventually filed a complaint against this farm, citing (among other issues), “increased noise, flies, [and] odor.” In another incident, the Los Angeles County Animal Control, with the help of a nonprofit called the Gentle Barn, rescued more than 50 animals about to be slaughtered by a “Southern California backyard butcher” who was routinely abusing his animals. Not only were all his creatures emaciated, but they had “infected lungs, parasites, fevers, and hacking coughs.” Last summer, backyard chickens and ducks infected more than 71 people with two separate strains of salmonella. Urban centers already deal with plenty of daunting health and safety issues. Do we really want to add traditionally rural ones to the mix?

Thieves slaughter, butcher calf on Rogers County road

Comments Off on Thieves slaughter, butcher calf on Rogers County road

A calf was stolen from a ranch near Chelsea in Rogers County, then slaughtered and butchered in the middle of a rural road. After taking the meat, the thieves left the remnants in a rotting heap on the road.

Investigators say cattle thefts have risen the past several years, and cost the ranchers much more than the cost of the cow.

“It kind of upset me,” cattle rancher Rob Bacon said.
A pool of blood, a cow hide, and a pile of bones and internal organs was not what Bacon expected to find when he went to check on his cattle earlier this week.

“The calf weighed somewhere between 550 and 600 lbs,” Bacon said. “It was worth somewhere between $950 and $1,000.”  He said that wasn’t all he lost when the calf was taken.

“The real problem is now I’m going to have to winter [another] cow, buy her feed, buy her hay, buy her pasture,” he said.
“This calf should have been sold in July. Now it will be a year from July before I’ll be able to get another paycheck.”

John Cummings is a marshal for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and said crimes like this are happening far too often.

“We have a lot more people out here stealing scraps, stealing tractors, trailer, and cattle,” Cummings said. “Cattle prices are up, so cattle are a pretty hot commodity.”

Cummings works with local law enforcement in counties across the area to catch these thieves.

“It’s our goal to either recover the cattle, or arrest who’s involved in the crime and try to get restitution through the courts.”  He said the thieves sometimes try selling the meat to fund drug or alcohol habits, but most of the time they simply take the meat home and eat it.

Bacon knows he can’t watch every inch of his roughly 150 acre ranch all the time, but he’s not happy that thieves take advantage of him. “Not violated, just pissed off,” he said.

Now, he said he plans to carry his shotgun around on the property so he’ll be ready to scare off any other potential thieves.  The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the thieves.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the Rogers County tip line at 918-341-3620.

If the thieves are caught, they will face animal cruelty charges and up to five years in prison.
