“Please support all horse welfare charities that are trying to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption. Please try to watch so you can understand the suffering they go through…the first video is fine to watch; the second, well it shows the truth & it’s not pretty or nice!!”
This video shows a mare delivered to the Cavel horse slaughter plant in Illinois on behalf of kill buyer John Birdsong. The mare should have never been loaded in this horrific condition. This is just more proof that horse slaughter – no matter if on US soil or in Canada or Mexico – will NEVER be humane. Please share wide and far and urge your representative to support the SAFE ACT, legislation that would ban the slaughter of US horses for human consumption.

Animals’ Angels (www.animalsangels.org) latest video shows the brutal reality of the horse slaughter industry in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Argentina. Our investigators followed the slaughter horses’ torturous journey all the way from US auctions to kill buyer feedlots and from there to export pens and slaughter plants across the border.
Please share this video wide and far, it is more proof that horse slaughter will never be humane and that it needs to stop immediately.
Please support the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE ACT; S.541;H.R.1094) Act , legislation introduced to stop the export of US horses across the border for slaughter in Mexico & Canada and to prevent US horse slaughter plants from reopening.
Contact your representative now and urge him/her to support this important legislation. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

BACKGROUND: (UPDATE: 20 DECEMBER-2013)
◕Activists struggle to get elderly polar bear out of the Argentinaheat..!
Arturo is a 28-year-old polar bear who lives in a zoo in Mendoza, Argentina. Activists have been campaigning to get him out of Mendoza for months, saying the scorching hot weather is taking a toll on him. A zoo in Canada has even offered to adopt him, but local authorities have swayed back and forth on whether to let him go.
◕According to his keepers, Arturo was born in captivity in the United States. He has spent two decades in Mendoza’s zoo, where he is the only polar bear. Local activists have published multiple videos showing his living conditions online, and petitioned the zoo to let him go to Canada – but despite their continuing efforts, it seems he may not be leaving his pen anytime soon.
◕In the wild, polar bears live an average of 15 to 18 years. However, in captivity, they can live well into their 30s; one bear in a Canadian zoo lived to be 42.
✦✦READ THIS REPORT:From Maria Fernanda Arentsen is originally from Mendoza, Argentina. She works as a university professor in Winnipeg, Canada.
“There is no way for him to escape the heat, which can rise to more than 40 degrees Celsius in Mendoza”
◕◕I first heard of Arturo’s plight through friends of mine in Mendoza who are part of environmental groups there. It was clear from their reports and from videos they filmed of Arturo that he was suffering from the terrible heat in Mendoza, which is not suitable for an animal meant to live in much colder temperatures. We became especially worried about his situation after another polar bear kept in a zoo in Buenos Aires died from the effects of the heat there last year. And that bear lived in much better conditions, in an enclosure with a deep pool and big blocks of ice
.◕As you can see in the videos,(**see below) Arturo lives in a concrete enclosure with only a shallow pool. There is no way for him to escape the heat, which can rise to more than 40 degrees Celsius during the summer months in Mendoza. [The polar bear in Buenos Aires, who was 16 years old, died on a day with a high of 36.7 degrees]. He has been filmed rocking back and forth in a way that animal experts say signals distress. It breaks my heart to see this.◕◕Since I live in an area that is much more suitable for polar bears, I contacted a polar bear conservatory here, which offered to send their experts to evaluate Arturo’s condition and, if he was found fit to travel, take him back to their centre to live out the rest of his life, at no cost to the Mendoza zoo.◕At first, Mendoza zoo officials refused, but then changed their minds and invited the conservatory’s experts to come see Arturo in November. However, just days before the scheduled trip – when the Canadian experts had already booked their tickets, packed all their equipment, etc – the invitation was retracted. [Editor’s Note: The province’s environment minister commented on this decision in a local radio interview by saying that the Canadians were “like pirates” who wanted to steal their bear, and alleged that the trip would kill him.] We were all very disappointed by their decision.
“It seems to me that the zoo is putting its pride ahead of Arturo’s well-being”◕It seems to me that the Mendoza authorities are putting their pride ahead of Arturo’s well-being – and may not want to lose an attraction that brings revenue to the zoo.◕◕Activists in Mendoza are not giving up the fight, however; they have collected more than 60,000 signatures and presented the petition to the local governor. My fingers are crossed, though I worry that nothing will change as long as the local authorities are in office.✦✦FRANCE 24 contacted Don Peterkin, the director of Winnipeg’s Assinoibe Park Conservancy. He replied with the following statement: “We have left our offer to accept Arturo open but have not had any recent communications with officials in Mendoza. As Arturo is ultimately their responsibility, we have to leave the next step, if any, to their discretion.”

“When that dog went to lay down, you could tell by his body language he has already been beaten or abused at some point in his poor life; probably a street dog!. I hope someone had the heart to go after the dog & save it. I’m so glad this bxxxxxd got expelled, but he really should be charged with animal abuse; anyone else found doing it would be charged! Imagine, if he can do this to a dog in public, what is he capable of doing behind closed doors??”
Argentinian soccer playerJose Jimenezhas been thrown off his team after grabbing a dog by the neck and launching it into a fence.
The dog wandered onto the pitch and submissivelylay down on the grass. He got back up and trotted around.
Cold Hearted Bastard!!
Jimenez, who had been speaking with a referee, noticed the dog and rushed over to it. He grabbed the dog around the throat, and forcefully flung it at thechain link fence. The dog bounced off, and miraculously, got up and trotted away.
Jimenez was initially given a red card for his despicable action, which got him sent off and expelled for three games.
The incident was captured on video and incited worldwide outrage. After consideration, the Argentine club permanently expelled Jimenez.
“The Executive Committee of CS Bella Vista [have decided that], by violently throwing a dog that had entered the field of play while the game was in progress, our club cannot protect the human and sporting image of Jose Antonio Jimenez, which has been damaged by his incomprehensible attitude,” a club statement read. “In accordance with the Committee’s Book of Proceedings, we have cancelled his registration from our roster.”
Though Jimenez may find himself on another team in the future, he will do it without fans.
Animal was one of the most popular attractions at the Argentinian Zoo
The last remaining polar bear at Buenos Aires Zoo has died after overheating in soaring summer temperatures.
‘Winner,’ who was one of best loved attractions at the zoo, is believed to have been unable to control its body temperature in the extreme heat of the Argentinian summer and died of hyperthermia.
The animal, which was covered in heavy fur to cope with freezing conditions in its native Artic habitat, was also believed to have been frightened by the noise from fireworks let off to celebrate Christmas Eve
Tragedy: ‘Winner’ the last polar bear in Buenos Aires Zoo, Argentina, has died from hyperthermia in the soaring summer heat
The zoo is a popular visitor attraction in the Argentine capital and has a tradition of looking after polar bears.
The animals used to live in a pool but their cage was improved in 1993 when a 145,000-litre pool was built along with a site for birthing and three security rings.
The zoo said in a statement that it had been visited by experts and met all international regulations to house polar bears.
Heat: ‘Winner’ was a popular attraction for visitors to the Zoo (seen here swimming in his pool)
The polar bear is often regarded as a marine mammal because of the large amount of time it spends at sea.
Its preferred habitat is the annual sea ice covering the waters over the continental shelf in the Artic.
The animal is a very good swimmer with some spotted in the sea as far as 200 miles from land.
CAN BEARS FROM THE ARCTIC REALLY ADAPT TO WARMER WATERS?
Hardy: Polar bears often spend as much time in the sea as they do on land as they hunt for prey
Polar bears cannot simply acclimatise to hot climates. Even if a polar bear is born in a warm climate and lives there all of his life, he will still possess several physiological adaptations to life in the Arctic.
Even if he loses some fur and blubber, he will always have black skin that absorbs heat and hollow hairs which work as efficient solar collectors.
Polar bears do not have any physical means of staying cool; they rely on behaviour to do that.
They will try to take as much shade as possible during the warmest parts of the day and cool off in cold water when they overheat.
Zookeepers may try and balance their energy expenditure and food intake to regulate their body temperature and may be fed a vegetarian diet or simply very little during warmer times (eating meat and fat generates immediate heat energy).
The bottom line is that polar bears can be resilient but this does not mean that they are comfortable.
Polar bears are found in the Arctic Circle and on neighbouring land masses as far south as Newfoundland Island in Canada. Some sightings have even been reported in the far north of Norway.
The bears are rarer in the extreme north of the Arctic although the animal is believed to roam across right across the region.
They tend to favour hunting on sea ice and in the sea in search of prey such as seals. Polar bears often frequent areas where sea ice meets water – primarily around the edges of the ice pack, where more seals can be found.
The global polar bear population is believed to be between 20,000 and 25,000 with 19 recognized sub-populations.
The polar bear is the largest terrestrial carnivore, with adult males weighing between 350 and 680 kg (770–1500 lbs) and measuring between 7.9 and 9.8 ft in length.

First all staff and volunteers of the shelter wants to thank the people who warned this bitch and rescued from certain death.
Despite the atrocity, let’s stay with the positive aspect that people are increasingly aware and hopefully very pronto these cruelties thing of the past. Valle Colino’s veterinarian has examined the dog and has several bites all over her body, superficial character , but without gravity.
The health status of the dog seems to be good but still under observation. Already several people are organizing to file a subsequent complaint with all the data that have been collected and also the report accompanying veterinarian.
Finally we want to end this message with the good news that a person already have expressed interest in adopting the dog and hopefully soon make the necessary legal procedures to do so, since it falls within the breeds considered by law as potentially dangerous.

Ever watchful, Capitan guards the final resting place of his friend Miguel Guzman. He has loyally spent every night at the cemetery sleeping on the grave of his owner.
Argentinian Miguel Guzmanbrought Capitan home as a present for his son Damian. Tragically, one year later Guzman died suddenly.
Capitan ran away and his family feared him lost. Imagine their astonishment when they went to pay their respects to their husband and father and found their lost dog sitting beside Guzman’s grave.
Capitan was grieving for his companion. According to Veronica Guzman, Mr. Guzman’s widow, “The following Sunday we went to the cemetery and Damian recognized his pet. Capitan came up to us, barking and wailing, as if he were crying.’
How he managed to locate Guzman is unknown. Mrs. Guzman said,”We had never taken him to the cemetery so it is a mystery how he managed to find the place”.
‘We went back the next Sunday, and he was there again. This time, he followed us home and spent a bit of time with us, but then went back to the cemetery before it started getting dark.
‘I don’t think he wanted to leave Miguel on his own at night.’
Cemetery director Hector Baccega recalls that, “he turned up here one day, all on his own, and started wandering all around the cemetery until he eventually found the tomb of his master.
‘During the day he sometimes has a walk around the cemetery, but always rushes back to the grave. And every day, at six o’clock sharp, he lies down on top of the grave stays there all night.’
The cemetery staff are so impressed with Capitan’s unending love for Mr. Guzman that they provide him with food and water and care for him.
Mr Guzman’s son Damian said: ‘I’ve tried to bring Capitan home several times, but he always comes straight back to the cemetery. I think he’s going to be there until he dies too. He’s looking after my dad.’
That’s the border limbo 16 tigers and lions have faced in Paraguay because Argentine officials refuse to approve their paperwork for re-entry.
A tiger sits in a cage in Puerto Falcon, Paraguay, on the border with Argentina, Friday, Aug. 24, 2012. Nine Bengal tigers and seven African lions from an Argentine circus have been stuck at the border in Paraguay for two months, because Argentine officials refuse to approve their paperwork for re-entry. Paraguay’s Wildlife Ministry announced Friday they will move the animals two by two to the Asuncion zoo, “so that they can live in some comfort and not in a strange area.”
The nine Bengal tigers and seven African lions belong to an Argentine circus that performs in the Paraguayan capital each August. Their owner, Oswal Wasconi, brought them back for this year’s circus only to learn that a new law in Paraguay bans live animal acts at circuses.
With no chance of performing, Wasconi tried to ship his big cats back to Argentina. But then they got stuck at the border.
Estela Gomez, director of Paraguay’s wildlife agency, said the animals all have good-health certificates, but their entry to Argentina was blocked by officials demanding more information about the protected species.
Aides to Argentina’s quarantine office director, Raul Castelli, said he was in a meeting and could not explain the holdup.
After inquiries from The Associated Press on Friday about the cats’ plight, Gomez said her ministry decided to move the big cats two by two to the Asuncion zoo, “so that they can live in some comfort and not in a strange area.”
Furthermore, she said that “Wasconi has promised to provide them with food and liquid because these animals are physically quite large.”
“In the next few days we will continue investigating the true reasons why the Argentine authorities aren’t authorizing their return,” she said. “I can’t anticipate whether these beasts will remain forever in Paraguay or eventually go to Argentina.”
