◕Activists struggle to get elderly polar bear out of the Argentina heat..!
Arturo is a 28-year-old polar bear who lives in a zoo in Mendoza, Argentina. Activists have been campaigning to get him out of Mendoza for months, saying the scorching hot weather is taking a toll on him. A zoo in Canada has even offered to adopt him, but local authorities have swayed back and forth on whether to let him go.
◕According to his keepers, Arturo was born in captivity in the United States. He has spent two decades in Mendoza’s zoo, where he is the only polar bear. Local activists have published multiple videos showing his living conditions online, and petitioned the zoo to let him go to Canada – but despite their continuing efforts, it seems he may not be leaving his pen anytime soon.
◕In the wild, polar bears live an average of 15 to 18 years. However, in captivity, they can live well into their 30s; one bear in a Canadian zoo lived to be 42.

“There is no way for him to escape the heat, which can rise to more than 40 degrees Celsius in Mendoza”

◕◕I first heard of Arturo’s plight through friends of mine in Mendoza who are part of environmental groups there. It was clear from their reports and from videos they filmed of Arturo that he was suffering from the terrible heat in Mendoza, which is not suitable for an animal meant to live in much colder temperatures. We became especially worried about his situation after another polar bear kept in a zoo in Buenos Aires died from the effects of the heat there last year. And that bear lived in much better conditions, in an enclosure with a deep pool and big blocks of ice

.◕As you can see in the videos,(**see below) Arturo lives in a concrete enclosure with only a shallow pool. There is no way for him to escape the heat, which can rise to more than 40 degrees Celsius during the summer months in Mendoza. [The polar bear in Buenos Aires, who was 16 years old, died on a day with a high of 36.7 degrees]. He has been filmed rocking back and forth in a way that animal experts say signals distress. It breaks my heart to see this.◕◕Since I live in an area that is much more suitable for polar bears, I contacted a polar bear conservatory here, which offered to send their experts to evaluate Arturo’s condition and, if he was found fit to travel, take him back to their centre to live out the rest of his life, at no cost to the Mendoza zoo.◕At first, Mendoza zoo officials refused, but then changed their minds and invited the conservatory’s experts to come see Arturo in November. However, just days before the scheduled trip – when the Canadian experts had already booked their tickets, packed all their equipment, etc – the invitation was retracted. [Editor’s Note: The province’s environment minister commented on this decision in a local radio interview by saying that the Canadians were “like pirates” who wanted to steal their bear, and alleged that the trip would kill him.] We were all very disappointed by their decision.
“It seems to me that the zoo is putting its pride ahead of Arturo’s well-being”◕It seems to me that the Mendoza authorities are putting their pride ahead of Arturo’s well-being – and may not want to lose an attraction that brings revenue to the zoo.◕◕Activists in Mendoza are not giving up the fight, however; they have collected more than 60,000 signatures and presented the petition to the local governor. My fingers are crossed, though I worry that nothing will change as long as the local authorities are in office.✦✦FRANCE 24 contacted Don Peterkin, the director of Winnipeg’s Assinoibe Park Conservancy. He replied with the following statement: “We have left our offer to accept Arturo open but have not had any recent communications with officials in Mendoza. As Arturo is ultimately their responsibility, we have to leave the next step, if any, to their discretion.”

Problem leopard dodges traps, kills woman

The problem leopard in Umred–Kuhi area of Nagpur district killed a woman in a farm near Tarna village Tuesday, triggering tension and public anger.

The animal had earlier injured three people. Efforts by the forest department to capture it since the first attack on August 10 have not succeeded.

“The leopard pounced on Babybai Uike, aged about 50 years, when she was sowing chillies with five or six other women around 5.30 pm. The woman’s shrieks attracted the group which raised an alarm, following which the animal ran away. But Babybai succumbed on the spot,” Divisional Forest Officer P K Mahajan told The Indian Express.

Villagers angry with the forest department’s failure to capture the leopard refused to collect Babybai’s body for two hours after the incident. “This will probably mean the villagers will take it upon themselves to find, catch & probably burn the leopard; as they have done on previous occasions!”

“We have put up two cages since August 15, but it is refusing to fall into the trap,” Mahajan said.

“Despite so much pressure, the animal is hardly deterred.”

Nobody seems to know why the leopard began attacking humans. Unlike most cases of man-animal conflict, the attacks have happened in villages and farms, not forests. “Which are still within the leopard’s dining area!!”

“This is clearly a crisis. From my experience in western Maharashtra, I can say that leopards that have been trapped once succeed in avoiding cages. Also, those caught outside protected areas but released inside generally tend to get into conflict with humans,” wildlife biologist and leopard scholar Vidya Athreya said.

A leopard was caged on June 10 after it entered a house in Ranbodi village nearby, and was released in the wild the next day.

Mahajan said the problem leopard could be the same one. “We are checking available photographs. It could be the same animal.”

Asked why shoot orders were not being issued, Mahajan said, “I will now send a report to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) S W H Naqvi, who will take a call.”

Asked for a comment, Naqvi said, “We have to exhaust all options before shoot orders are issued. I will decide after getting a report from the DFO.” “Of course they can’t just go round shooting all the leopards that villagers see close up, they are a protected species…not that the villagers care. I have seen some horrific videos of what villagers will do to any that they can catch, beating them to death or burning them alive! Perhaps public housing is more likely to be edging further into the leopards domain…not the other way around…that or the locals are killing meat usually hunted by the leopard; for their own family’s to feed on…hence no food for the leopards!”

“Having just found this video, I thought I would include as it show’s the villagers mentality on finding a leopard. Villagers go into mob mode, their like screaming banshees, possessed, the appear by the hundreds (don’t know how or who calls them) & will kill either leopard or officials if there are only a few. You can see the hatred they have for the leopard, throwing rocks at it’s head, when the poor bloody thing only want’s to get back to forest!”

“Thank God the superintendence of police got more back up or else this could have ended with 2 deaths. I think they should look into training more people who are able to dart & know the leopards behaviour!!”

Villagers dare that catch the leopard or they will kill. after the 1st fail attempt from villagersthey almost succeed to kill leopard, but help of police forest official & we success to save this leopard. only 1 person who has experience to Trap or dart leopard,other 1 is me who know the behavior of leopard , both injured in action. Daring of Mr.Sunil Wadekar who takes the decision of Open Dart…& got success… i feel the happiness that man after the fever he run at least for 4km ..& save to Leopard. Thanks to Superintendent of Police Nashik Mr.Pravin Padval who send extra police force & respond to my Request.

Three Years On, ‘Sita’ The White Tigress Still Awaits A Partner So Lives In Solitude

INDORE: Sita, the white tigress at Kamala Nehru Park, has been forced to live in solitude by the authorities concerned for the past three years even as she has the legal right to have a partner. Though the zoo officials claimed to have launched a search to get a partner for her, the fact is that keeping the tigress without a partner for three years is illegal.

As per Section 38H of the Wildlife (protection) Act 1972, no animalcan be kept alone in a zoo without a partner for more than one year without valid reasons.

“Every zoo shall endeavour to avoid keeping single animals of non-viable sex ratios of any species. They shall cooperate in pooling such animals into genetically, demographically and socially viable groups at zoos identified for the purpose”, according to Central Zoo authority‘s general policies for zoo across the country. Even the rule book says that every zoo shall keep the animals in viable social groups. No animal will be kept without a mate for a period exceeding one year unless there is a legitimate reason. In the event of a zoo failing to find a mate for an animal, the animal shall be shifted to some other place.

Animal activist Ajay Gadikar told TOI, “Captivated animals in the zoo should not be kept in solitary condition from their mates, not that it is illegal but also it is very depressing for the invertebrates. If there are some animals in the zoo which are living solo, then zoo authorities should take measures. The zoo should be interlinked with other zoo and keep a check whether they have animals to pair with or it can be shifted to someplace. Even Ralamandal authorities keep rescuing animals. So the zoo authorities can ask them to shift the animals to pair them with the zoo animals.”

These animals have been made to live as singletons for the past two to three years. The tigress has been living alone for three years whereas a female jackal and male monkey have been living in isolation for the past one year.

According to the zoo authorities, they have been taking steps to provide mates to the solo animals. “We are doing our best to solve this problem. As monkey and jackal are in surplus around here, we can get them. For the tigress, we have fetched a male white tiger from Bhilai zoo”

Baby gorilla dies at Pittsburgh zoo, cause unclear

PITTSBURGH

A gorilla born in February at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has died, though zoo officials say it will take several weeks to determine why. 

Zoo officials had not named the male gorilla. It had been born Feb. 9 to Moka, a 15-year-old gorilla brought to the Pittsburgh zoo from one in Miami in 2007.

Barbara Baker, the zoo’s president and chief executive officer, says the gorilla appeared lethargic and weak in its mother’s arms on Friday. She says the animal was transferred to the zoo’s new Animal Care Center where he died Saturday.

Zoo officials announced the death Monday.

The gorilla had been the first born at the zoo since 2001.

The gorilla’s 20-year-old father, Mrithi (mm-REE’-thee), was the first gorilla born at the zoo.

Swan is clubbed to death Bird lured with bread … and then killed

COPS were yesterday hunting a gang of sick thugs who bludgeoned a swan to death using a club studded with nails.

A horrified passer-by saw the yobs lure the swan from a stretch of water using bread before beating it and hurling it into the back of a van.

It is the third attack on a swan in Lincoln in the last six months.

Charlotte Childs, of the local RSPCA, said: “The only thing we can think of is they’re being killed to be eaten, but it could have been just an attack for fun. It’s horrific.”

She added: “Swans mate for life so there will be another out there pining for its mate.”

Lincolnshire police are trying to trace a black van with a registration number that starts FS06.

At first glance, the sawfish looks like nature’s awkward version of a double-sided garden rake. This highly endangered species is a kind of ray. Previous observations of sawfish predatory behavior pinned them as slow-moving bottom-dwellers.

But a study this month in Current Biology shows that the freshwater sawfish is no rake-nosed dope. In fact, the sawfish uses its toothed rostrum (the saw) not only to detect its next meal, but also to attack and impale its prey, sometimes slashing at schooling fish or even cutting tissue out of whales. Their strikes can be strong enough to cut a fish in half.

The study shows that the saw is used both to detect prey and to attack it. Other fish in the shovel-nose family can’t do both—and previously, researchers thought the sawfish followed suit. Unlike other jawed fish whose snouts are used for one or the other purpose, the sawfish has thousands of electroreceptors that enable them to detect the electromagnetic field produced by other animals, and they have tiny canals on their skin that register water movement in their three-dimensional hunting environment.

This new reputation may lead to changes in fishing practices allowed in sawfish territory—their saws often become entangled in fishing gear, contributing to their swift decline.

Elephant calf Mee Chok in Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary – BLES – YouTube

Mee Chok (Blessed) was just 20 months old when BLES successfully rescued him. Previously known as Pheung Yai (Bumble Bee), this baby elephant had known nothing but the inside of the filthy shack he was chained and shackled in. He was snatched away from his birth mother when he was just a few months old, so that the owners could start breaking him in. He was put with another adult female who showed no interest in him and he was never allowed out of the broken down stable. Chained, shackled, and highly distressed, Mee Chok had wounds on his face and ears, was dehydrated, and thin. He was lashing out all over the place, angry and confused by being confined and restricted.

Leopard crushed at zoo, euthanized | The Columbus Dispatch

One of the surviving exotic animals from Terry Thompson’s Zanesville farm has died, crushed by a gate at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

The leopard was one of six animals owned by Thompson that the zoo has been housing since October under a quarantine order by the Department of Agriculture. 

Zoo spokeswoman Patty Peters said a zookeeper was preparing to feed the leopard and clean its cage when the incident occurred. The keeper moved the animal into a neighboring enclosure and pulled the lever that lowers the gate between the two enclosures. As the gate went down, the leopard darted beneath it and was struck on its neck.

The animal’s heart stopped, but the zookeeper restarted it with chest compressions. An examination determined that the leopard’s spinal cord was injured, and state veterinarian Dr. Tony Forshey made the decision to euthanize the animal.
