Cat Carer Julie Newnham Spared Jail After Being Convicted Of Letting Animals Suffer

“When are Judges going to man up, grow a pair & start kicking some ass? Suspended sentence for 12 months, why the hell do they bother mentioning prison if the culprit isn’t going? The RSPCA has lost cost of over £4,000, the culprit should be made to pay the full vet fees & any hospitalization for animals in a mess under the culprits care. Oh, lets not forget the terrible sentence of having to do some unpaid work, boo hoo! No cats for 10 years, well that’s not too long, she can have dogs or rabbits until then! 

“Seriously, what is the point of taking these cases to court if the person doesn’t have to pay for their crime. There is little wonder charity’s like the RSPCA don’t take all cases to court…they can’t bloody afford to. Jail should mean Jail, unpaid work should be back-breaking work, shovelling shit at a rescue farm, & no animals, well that should be for life! These people let animals suffer & die…with the judicial system as it is, there is no wonder there are so many at it, the punishment is no deterrent at all!!”

A jobless mum who took in more than 30 cats has been banned from keeping them for 10 years after being found guilty of animal cruelty.

Julie Newnham, 38, advertised her home on the internet as being a haven for unwanted animals.

Scores of people who could no longer care for their pets took them to her thinking they would lead a healthy and safe life.

However, Newnham – pictured right – has now been found guilty of a string of animal cruelty charges – but spared an immediate jail sentence.

When RSPCA inspectors went to her home, in Homeside, Borrows Lane, Middle Stoke, on the Isle of Grain, after a tip-off they found four cats in very poor condition.They were emaciated, flee-ridden and had sores and ulcers. One cat – called Ruby – was so ill, she had to be put down.

There were said to be 33 cats at Newnham’s home as well as two dogs owned by her husband.

The cats were also suffering from diarrhoea. Some had sores, had suffered hair loss and were covered in faeces.

Newnhan allowed the cats to be taken by the RSPCA inspectors. They were all taken to a vet and given emergency treatment and pain relief. Unfortunately, Ruby did not recover and had to be put down.

Newnham was charged with four counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and two counts of failing in her duty of care as she was responsible for ensuring the animal’s welfare.

She was found guilty in her absence after not turning up for a court hearing in September. A warrant was issued for her arrest and she was brought back before the courts a few days later.

Her case was adjourned to allow pre-sentencing reports to be completed and she was sentenced before magistrates in Medway.

Andrew Wiles, prosecuting for the RSPCA said: “The cats were extremely thin and sneezing and suffering hair loss and diarrhoea. Some were covered in faeces and had large flee burdens.

“One cat had discharged coming out of his eyes and was very thin, and had a ulcer in the right eye, it was at risk of losing it if the ulcer had burst.”

Mr Wiles said the total cost of the treatment for the cats and the subsequent investigation to the charity was more than £5,200 – and asked magistrates to consider awarding costs.

Jeremy Betts, defending, told the court Newnham had good intentions when she took in the cats, but did not have the means or finances to deal with them if they became ill.

He told magistrates she had overstretched herself and that she no longer advertises her services on-line  He said the cats’ ill treatment was not a deliberate act and that his client just could not cope.

Magistrates jailed Newnham for 12 weeks – but suspended the sentence for 12 months – and banned her from keeping cats for 10 years. She was also ordered to carry out 240 hours’ unpaid work and pay a contribution of £1,202.80 towards the charity’s costs.

Magistrate John Weir said: “Any right thinking person would have realised that these cats needed help.”

PD: Animal Abuse Charges Tossed For Man In Cat Mutilation Case

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -Mesa police said Monday they’ve tossed animal cruelty charges against a man accused of stealing and mutilating dozens of cats in Mesa, sparking outrage from a group of citizens.

The group, comprising residents and owners of the mutilated cats, has scheduled two protests against Scott Andrew Graham, 39, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturday at Alma School Road and Pecos Avenue, the entrance to Marlboro Mesa neighborhood in Mesa.

“Anyone that’s going to abduct 30 to 40 cats isn’t doing it just to play with them and let them go,” said protestor Lenetta Leger.

“I mean, I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist or a psychologist to see there’s obviously something wrong with this man,” she continued during Tuesday’s protest.

The Maricopa County attorney’s office had referred the case back to police on Sept. 6 to gather more evidence.

“Investigative efforts have been exhausted,” Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Tony Landato said in a news release. “The decision was made to continue with only the theft charge.”

Landato cited an investigation by detectives that called into question some initial facts of the case.

“Any additional or future charges are unlikely until additional evidence is developed or received that would allow the investigation to continue,” Landato said.

Tuesday, CBS 5 asked Landato for more information as to why the animal abuse charges were dropped.

“As it turns out, when we sat down with the photos of the mutilated cats and the (owners) and the photos they had, everyone was in agreement that although similar, this is not the victim’s cat,” explained Landato.

“So that’s a critical piece of evidence that now we’ve lost,” he continued.

Mesa police said Aug. 8 home surveillance video caught Graham  taking a cat from the top of a person’s vehicle in the 900 block of West Natal.

Several days later, the cat was found dead and mutilated behind a nearby strip mall where another mutilated cat was found.

On Aug. 23, police said a member of the neighbourhood watch, Ben Smith, said he saw the vehicle again and tried to catch him on his bike. The suspect allegedly threw the cat out the window and fled.

On Sept. 3, the same neighbour spotted the vehicle again, took photos and got his license plate number.

Graham was arrested on South Spruce in Mesa where he was staying with relatives.

Friday, CBS 5 News confirmed Graham was not in jail and tried to contact him at the home in Mesa. A relative answered the door and said, “No comment.”

Police said without the neighbour’s help, the arrest might not have ever happened.

“There would not have been an arrest and possibly never resulting in this case had he not had that… not just the one time but both times,” Landato said.

“I was dead set on not losing this guy and getting as much photographic evidence as possible,” Smith said.

Police said Graham admitted to the theft charge and taking between 30 and 40 cats from the area. He denied harming the cats, stating he just played with them and then dropped them off at a different location.

Friday, a neighbour said she found another dead cat on Thursday.

“The neighbours think that maybe some antifreeze or something was given to the cats, so I don’t know. It was dead,” said Yolanda Fletcher.

Smith said Friday, “As soon as we found out in the neighbourhood that the charges were getting dropped, we went right back up to boosting patrols and adding surveillance cameras throughout the neighborhood.”

The suspect and his family told police he is deathly allergic to cats.

Graham was initially charged with one count of mistreatment to animals and two counts of cruelty to animals, along with one theft charge.

Owner Charged After Over 20 Animals Seized From Home

NASHVILLE, Mich — A woman was arrested after Barry County Deputies investigated a possible animal abuse or neglect case.

Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf said his animal control officers found 7 horses and 17 cats in need of desperate help.

The animals were taken into police custody and the owner, 64-year-old Marl Steinbach, was taken to jail.

FOX 17 has learned this isn’t the first time, Steinbach has been charged with animal cruelty.

Annie Meek is Steinbach’s neighbour on Morgan Street in Nashville, Michigan.

Whenever Meek left her home she passed by the horses kept in Steinbach pasture.

“The were getting worse and worse and worse,” she said of the horses she saw from the road. “One of the mares had all her ribs showing, her spine was really bad, you could see her hips, her backbone.”

At first Meek said she tried to help the animals herself, “We’d pick a lot of grass and feed it to it and them some hay that was sitting there.”

Then Meek said she tried to help the owner, “I said maybe you should surrender some of them.  And she said no.  And it went around and then when they came and took them away she said, she should have listened to me.”

Meek called the Barry County Sheriff’s Department to report what she said was animal neglect.

With the help of animal control, 17 cats and 7 horses were taken from the property and Steinbach was arrested.

Sheriff Leaf said he knows that people are going to want to help these animals but adds they are now in his control.

Sheriff Leaf said, “They are under veterinarian care.  And they are evidence of a crime.  So we don’t want people to come up and get involved that way.”

A Look at Steinbach’s criminal history shows an arrest in 2003 for cruelty to animals.  Neighbors say that charge also involved multiple horses.

Meek said the decision to call the sheriff’s department came down to saving lives.

“I felt bad for Marl, but those horses come first,” she said.

Help Cats and Ferrets Used in Cruel Training at St. Louis Hospital

St. Louis Children’s Hospital, in conjunction with Washington University in St. Louis, continues to torment cats and ferrets for painful intubation training exercises in their Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and pediatric residency programs.

During the exercises, plastic tubes are repeatedly forced down the cats’ windpipes. This procedure can cause bleeding, swelling, pain, scarring, collapsed lungs, and even death.

The PALS course’s sponsor, the American Heart Association, states that it “does not require or endorse the use of animals in PALS courses” and that “the AHA recommends that any hands-on intubation training for the AHA PALS course be performed on lifelike human manikins.” PETA has surveyed hundreds of PALS facilities across the country, and nearly every one of them—including St. Louis University, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, and St. Louis Community College—uses non-animal methods for intubation training. Similarly, more than 90 percent of pediatric residency programs in the U.S. use only non-animal methods for intubation training.

Research shows that in addition to protecting animals, simulators better prepare medical professionals to treat seriously ill or injured children because they more accurately replicate human anatomy and allow people to practice these skills repeatedly.

South Korean tradition of eating dog meat to beat the heat draws international criticism

• Known as ‘Bok-Nal’, South Koreans eat dog meat during the hottest days of summer because they believe it increases their stamina

The South Korean belief that eating dog helps beat the heat in the summer months has angered animal rights activists around the world.

Known as ‘Bok-Nal’, the dog eating days, it is a ritual celebrated by South Koreans where dog meat is eaten to increase stamina during the hottest days of the year.

To coincide with the tradition, animal rights activists staged protests around the world today, packing into wired cages in various locations including in front of the South Korean embassies in Seoul, London and America.

While dog meat is consumed throughout the year, during Bok-Nal South Koreans consume more to combat the heat.

Dog meat restaurants in Seoul say they served more customers than usual today.

 Animal rights group In Defense of Animals (IDAUSA) said dogs and cats are kept in cramped, filthy cages and slaughtered in unimaginable ways as part of the $2 billion dog and cat meat industry.A statement on their website said: ‘Two and a half million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, hanged, or beaten to death each year.

‘The dogs are slaughtered in unimaginable ways: electrocuted, hanged, and even beaten to death, because of the prevailing myth that the greater the suffering the more tender and tastier the meat, and that the mythical health properties are enhanced.‘

Thousands of cats are also eaten in soups and ‘tonics’.

IDAUSA said: ‘Cats are often bludgeoned and thrown into boiling water while still alive.’

According to Yonhap news agency, Seoul is experiencing the longest period of time with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius since 1994.

In South Korea, dogs are deprived of everything that is natural to them. It is hard to believe that a nation such as South Korea which is one of the major economic power (13th largest) and boasts the highest education level in the world is still committing this type of barbaric and inhumane atrocity in this day and age. But for the millions of dogs and cats that are being slaughtered each year in South Korea’s markets, slaughterhouses, restaurants, dog farms and in private residences, it is a tragic reality and nightmare that they can’t escape from.

If South Korea wants to join the civilized nations and be respected not only as a nation of economic miracle but as a nation of conscience, they need to strengthen their animal protection law and ban the dog and cat consumption once and for all. This has been going on way too long and it’s time for their government to take a moral leadership for their citizens. Not only does this benefit the animals of South Korea but it will further their economic interest in the world because we will not stop speaking out against South Korea.

South Korea can host the most extravagant Olympic game in the history of the Olympics but as long as this treachery against the animals known to be our most loving and faithful companion continues, it will be tainted with heartless brutality and their country and its people will be subject of world’s condemnation.

We will boycott PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and the South Korean businesses until the South Korean government stops neglecting their duty and illegalize the horrific cruelty of dog and cat consumption.

West Palm Beach woman facing 45 counts of animal cruelty released from jail

A woman whose home was once singled out by authorities as the worst hoarding case in Palm Beach County history was released from jail Tuesday afternoon after she was arrested a day earlier on more than three dozen animal cruelty charges.

Janna Howard, 60, came under scrutiny March 6 when fire rescue crews were called to her Greenacres home for a medical emergency. There they discovered an ill Howard living on her patio while some 50 cats were crawling among trash heaps. Authorities found that the home’s doors, windows and vents were covered with duct tape so neighbors could not smell the urine, feces and garbage that had accumulated.

Fire rescue alerted the county’s Animal Care and Control department and Greenacres code enforcement officials eventually condemned the home. Howard moved to an apartment in West Palm Beach, according to jail records.

Howard, an Air Force veteran from 1974-83, was booked on 45 counts of cruelty to animals, according to an Animal Care and Control probable cause affidavit.

She appeared before Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Charles E. Burton Tuesday morning in a wheelchair. He ordered she be released from jail under supervision and ordered her to have no contact with animals.

In an April Palm Beach Post article, Animal Care and Control Capt. David Walesky called the home’s conditions “deplorable” and said, “it is probably the worst hoarding case that we’ve seen in Palm Beach County.”

“I’m glad to see she could face prosecution for what she’s done to the animals there at her residence,” Walesky told the PostTuesday. “I think she needs to get some help for sure. It’s going to take more than prosecution to help her from doing this again.”

Walesky said Howard was involuntarily committed to a mental health center in March because she was seen as a danger to herself. She spent time at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis then was transfer ed to the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Riviera Beach. He said Howard is currently in some type of assisted living or health care program.

According to the affidavit released Tuesday, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies, the Greenacres Fire Marshal, code enforcement officers and Animal Care and Control officers all were dispatched to the home on 27th Lane in March.

The Fire Marshal decided that the home was unsafe for anyone to enter, or stay long enough to remove the cats. However, officers wearing “industrial strength respirators” were eventually able to enter the home and round up the cats with traps.

Several cats had eye and nasal discharge and some had ulcers, according to the affidavit. Some were dehydrated and many had severe signs of upper respiratory infections.

By March 16 all but two cats were dead, according to the affidavit.

A veterinarian concluded in March that Howard, who was a cantor at St. Juliana Catholic Church in West Palm Beach for eight years, denied the cats the five freedoms of animal welfare: Freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury and disease; freedom to express normal behavior; and freedom from fear and distress.

“Had these animals not been subjected to a hoarding environment, had been provided clean air, food and water as well as routine preventative veterinary care such as vaccinations, survival and longevity would have been far greater,” an officer wrote in the affidavit.

NM Man accused of animal cruelty tells ABC-7 he did nothing wrong

CHAPARRAL, N.M. – Sheriff’s deputies seized 52 cats from his home

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators said Charles Gonnell, 62, is facing felony animal cruelty charges, animal ordinance violations and codes violations after they seized 52 cats and kittens from his Chaparral home.

The staff veterinarian at the sheriff’s office determined all of the cats were suffering from respiratory infections and skin diseases.

Gonnell said the allegations of animal cruelty against him are untrue.

“I never thought there was anything wrong with it. They just told me that caring for stray animals is some sort of hideous crime,” Gonnell said.

Gonnell told ABC-7 not all of the cat’s that sheriff’s investigators collected last week were his. He considered five of them his pets and the rest were strays he fed and cared for.

“I was helping them. I don’t know if there was 50 or 500. I was just concerned with helping them out. My wife when she came home from work the first thing she would do is feed them or work on their eyes,” Gonnell said.

Photos and videos of some of the kittens the sheriff’s office collected reveal many of them had their eyes shut with mucus from various infections.

Kelly Jameson, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, said they have been forced to euthanize 20 of the 52 cats because they were in pain and suffering from their infections.

Gonnell does not believe the cats needed to be euthanized.

“They were not suffering. We used to clean their eyes everyday, feed them everyday. They would play,” Gonnell said.

Gonnell said he and his wife asked their veterinarian how to treat the cats and were using her advice to care for them.

He said it was his responsibility as a Catholic to care for these animals.

“Because they were hungry and they were thirsty. They asked me why would you take care of them? Well, he tells us to take care of them. St. Francis,” Gonnell said.

Gonnell has not been formally charged, but Jameson said investigators expect to file charges against him this week.

Jameson said they are treating the remaining cats with pain killers and antibiotics, but they will probably have to euthanize a few more of them.

Women Throws Box Of Cats And A Yorkshire Terrier Out Of Moving Car

“Unbelievable…watch the video at the link below!” 

Animal Control workers in Clarksville, Tennessee watched in horror as a woman threw a box containing seven cats out of her moving vehicle at the shelter, and later returned to hurl a Yorkshire Terrier out of the car and into the street.

“The car sped out of our parking lot, opened up the car door while it was moving, and threw out a Yorkshire Terrier out of a moving vehicle. The dog chased after the car for a while because obviously it was the owner,” said Montgomery County Animal Control Director Karen Josephson.

She and local police would both like help from the public to identify the woman. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Clarksville police at (931) 648-0656.
