Horrific Cruelty Towards Babies: The Unwanted Male Dairy Calves

“This is an update on a post I did several months ago; however this contains more information. So please read the information at the links, sign the petitions & watch a new video recorded February 2013 by Animals Australia!!”

“Don’t you find it appalling that we force animals into pregnancy, then steal their babies & if that wasn’t bad enough, we then steal their babies milk! FFS people…please…I know I’ve written a lot; but only because I feel so strongly on the this subject. These animals have very little rights, or protection from harm…yes there are rules in place…but there all just about broken; as we have seen so many times before on undercover videos. Ok, these are just animals to some, but that doesn’t, nor shouldn’t put them beneath us, nor give us the right to treat them in such appalling ways, should it??

These young, vulnerable animals suffered not only because of illegal cruelty — but, crucially, because they were not wanted by the commercial dairy industryHundreds of thousands of Australian bobby calves are slaughtered each year as waste products of the dairy industry. The terrible treatment at this abattoir is not the first, nor will it be the last time that calves will be thrown, dragged and abused.

Their inability as babies to comprehend what is required of them, whether during loading for transport or up the races of slaughterhouses, requires them to be treated with compassion and patiencetwo human traits rarely witnessed when it comes to dealing with unwanted and ‘worthless’ animals.

Hidden Cameras – The Unwanted Dairy calf Investigation – Does not show slaughter!

(What you probably knew, but didn’t want to see; is a better title)

Using hidden cameras, this investigation into the fate of unwanted dairy calves (bobby calves) in Australia reveals what the dairy industry doesn’t want you to see. LIKE & SHARE this video to help expose this. For tips on going dairy-free visit http://AnimalsAustralia.org/dairy-inv…

Young calves pushed, shocked with electric prods, hit and dragged up a metal ramp to be slaughtered… Some, too weak to stand, are thrown into the slaughter chute.

This shocking footage, provided to Animals Australia, was taken at an abattoir in Northern Victoria.

Upon receiving the footage, Animals Australia lodged a formal complaint with the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) for breaches of Victorian animal cruelty laws and the illegal use of an electric prod on a calf. A formal complaint was also lodged with PrimeSafe for breaches of the Australian Standards governing welfare at abattoirs; PrimeSafe ordered the practices cease immediately. Investigations have now concluded — incredibly, no charges have been laid.

Instead, the abattoir owners and several workers were issued with formal warnings by DPI. “Formal warnings for beating, shocking & brutally abusing babies…does that seem right or fair? Those heartless bastards should have been EXPOSED to all & at the very least; then BEEN FINED & DISMISSED!”

This exposure of abattoir cruelty, the latest in a string over the past 15 months, further demonstrates the urgent need for constant monitoring by Government veterinary officers and CCTV in all abattoirs.

“OK…this is my rant! Don’t we kill enough animals? slaughtered in appalling ways, just to satisfy the human hunger for all things meat?? Please…these are babies, yet they are thrown around, stunned, hit, poked, prodded etc. from the day they are born. This is 2013; we don’t need to be eating baby calves to maintain a healthy diet, any more than we need to be stealing their milk…it’s all just a preference!”

“For the cow’s, nature normally decides the sex of an animal, but there is such a thing as specific “sexed semen” in the farming industry. It’s mainly only used on heifers for their first born, after that, it isn’t so predictable. So “sexed semen” isn’t widely used. A dairy cow is impregnated every year, so she continues to produce a steady supply of milk for humans to drink. This is usually done through artificial insemination which will give a 50/50 chance as to the sex of the calf. Most cows in the regular dairy industry are also given growth hormones, causing their udders to become unnaturally big and heavy, resulting in frequent infections. The Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH) also increases birth defects in calves.

Female cows have the same gestation period as women, 9 months! When the calf is born, it is normal dairy practice to remove the calf. Generally, the female calves are reared to join the milking herd but for male calves, it’s a very different story! The average modern dairy cow will produce about 100 pounds of milk per day, which is 10 times more than it would naturally produce. Normally cows can live an average of 25 years. Dairy cows are slaughtered and made into ground beef after about 3-4 years.

For the poor males calves born, a small percentage can either be reared for beef, if suitable, or sold for veal. After being removed from their mothers, veal calves are loaded onto trucks and often sold at auctions. These small and fragile calves are often treated very roughly. If they are unable to walk, they will be dragged by their legs or ears (as seen in the video)

For the places that still use veal crates, the calves are confined in crates measuring about two feet wide. To make their meat more “tender”, their movements are restrained by chains around their necks. To give a white colour to their meat, the calves are fed an all-liquid milk-substitute, purposely deficient in iron and fibre  After about 16 weeks, these poor calves are slaughtered and their meat is sold labelled as “white” veal. They don’t even get to taste their mothers milk, let alone be with their mothers!”

“Bob” veal comes from calves who are slaughtered when they are only a few hours or days old! SORRY….that just isn’t right…in fact, it makes us no better than our earlier neanderthal man, who would eat any meat, just to stay alive! WTF are we doing, eating baby calves…isn’t the meat from a cow good enough???

There is no getting away from the fact that humans developed this heinous life for young calves, purely so that their meat would taste nice to a certain clientele ! How f-ing wrong is that??? Doing so makes us no better than the people in Asia that eat puppies, dogs or cats! How many of you have signed numerous petitions to put an end to the cruel torture & eating of puppies, dogs or cats?? Some regions of china, beat the animal before it is slaughtered, because those eating it believe it makes the meat taste better.! Well what the hell are we doing??? putting babies into small crates to restrict their growth; so their meat tastes nicer!!! We are no f-ing better then them, we cause baby calves pain by putting them into crates with chains around their necks, not letting them move, feeding them poor diets etc. TELL ME…WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE???”

“Sadly, I’m more than aware, that where no other viable options exist, some farmers have no choice but to cull their bull calves, i.e. shoot them shortly after birth!! Perhaps this is the better end, than being dragged from their mothers, forced into trailers, degraded at sale rings…starved in veal crates, then violently tossed onto a slaughter belt & probably concious whilst their throats are cut!

“Female cows are in the dairy business for one reason only, for humans to steal their milk! Milk they produce because they are continually kept pregnant, because being pregnant means their body gets ready to produce milk for their babies, just like women; which is why female cow’s have their babies then are made pregnant again!  Artificial insemination especially in intensive dairy farming, cows are genetically engineered and fed growth hormones to force them to produce more milk.”

All female animals produce milk just like humans do, for their babies…unless your born a male calf…males don’t don’t get to have their mothers milk or be nurtured & feel safe; because they were sadly born MALE & not wanted by the commercial dairy industry.

“YOU CAN HELP BY SIMPLY NOT EATING VEAL or drinking their milk…Wouldn’t you feel a lot happier knowing you were not contributing to this?? I don’t eat any meat & only have Soya as my dairy substitute; even if I wasn’t vegetarian I still couldn’t stomach the thought of eating any baby animal;especially after seeing how they are treated!

“The link below also offers other ways to help this appalling cruelty”

Link:http://animalsaustralia.org/investigations/dairy-calf-cruelty-investigation/

“These babies, including, pigs, cows, chickens, lambs, foals & often other animals around the world, are seen in the farming industry as cattle, livestock or property…therefore allowed to be killed & abused dreadfully, as is being seen! Why are we letting this happen??

What You Never Knew About Dairy

The treatment of bobby calves has been a long-held secret of the dairy industry. For the sake of milk products, the Australian dairy industry discards some 700,000 unwanted week-old calves as ‘waste products’ every year. You can help these vulnerable animals at http://www.animalsaustralia.org

“Of course there are those that don’t want the public to see how animals are treated or slaughtered on farms etc. So they are trying to introduce Ag-Gag bills…WHY?? If a farm has nothing to hide; why be so paranoid? We need these people to go into places the public are not allowed, so they can document all stages of cattle processing etc. Personally I think all places were animals are reared or slaughtered should have CCTV made available to 3rd parties at any time. For workers who, for want of a better word “enjoy causing & inflicting pain on another living being” farms & slaughter houses are perfect for them to carry on their diabolical & heinous rituals of hurting animals! Without undercover films or CCTV…how the hell are we going to know how the animals are kept & handled??”

Dangerous bills in five states would criminalize whistle-blowing on factory farms, chilling the ability of the American public to confront animal cruelty, unsafe working conditions, and environmental problems. See if your state has such a bill pending. In 2013, these states have introduced anti-whistle-blower bills:

If You Have To Eat Veal – Please Buy British veal

By rearing these calves for British veal, we believe they are given a life worth living. The calves are reared in groups and must be provided with bedding which gives them a comfortable floor surface. Young calves are supplied double the amount of fibrous food compared with EU requirements, and older calves have greater space allowance than stipulated in EU law.

And, last but not least, these calves have not endured long distance transport to reach the rearing units.

And finally, if it doesn’t specify on the menu that the veal is British, assume that it isn’t  Retailers, restaurants, butchers and deli’s should be proud to offer this higher welfare alternative.

Maternal Deprivation – A HSUS guide to the welfare of veal animals

The routine early separation of cows and their calves in the dairy and veal industries is distressing for both.

Hudson and Mullord foundthat 5-min contact with a calf immediately post partum is sufficient for the formation of a strong, specific maternal bond with that calf.

Calves separated from their dams at birth, as observed by Lidfors, were less active and vocalized and licked themselves more than calves remaining with their mothers. Marchant-Forde et al. reported that calves separated from their dams 24 hours after birth recognized and responded to recordings of their dams’ calls 24 hours after separation, with the cows’ vocalizations eliciting cardiac and behavioural responses in their calves.

In its 1995 Report on the Welfare of Calves, the SVC concluded: “The best conditions for rearing young calves involve leaving the calf with the mother in a circumstance where the calf can suckle and can subsequently graze and interact with other calves.” Newborn calves have no antibodies against infections and are entirely dependent on immunoglobulin in mother’s milk for immunological protection.

Colostrum, the milk dams produce during the first few days after calving, is especially high in immunoglobulinAdequate intake of colostrum is critical for the future health of the calf, as those with low concentrations of absorbed immunoglobulin are more susceptible to diarrhoea.

The routine practice of removing newborn calves from their dams within a few hours of birth may jeopardize this important transfer of immunoglobulin.  Although colostrum is collected from recently calved cows, in top dairy-producing states such as California, it is often sold to facilities specializing in raising female calves for the dairy industry,as their long-term health is considered to be of greater value than that of male calves reared for veal.

Surveys of U.S. veal farms confirm that many calves do not receive adequate colostrum.

What about veal crates?

“Confining calves to crates prevents them from performing all of their natural social and psychological behaviours, purposely prevents healthy growth and development. At the end of their short lives, many calves are not able to walk properly to slaughter, due to the under-development of their leg muscles.

“Humans do this on purpose so that their meat tastes better…FFS….this makes us no better than the people in parts of China, that beat dogs to death; under the impression it makes their meat taste better!! Well, we might not intentionally beat the animal to “make it taste better” but we keep it confined in crate so it doesn’t grown normally!! Not that much difference is there??”

“Crated calves are fed a poor substitute as opposed to their mothers milk; which actually causes them to become anaemic, which creates the very pale meat; the seller wants & the buyers need…it disgusting!”

While some animal advocates work to ban the use of veal crates, the slaughter of any animal for food is antithetical to animal rights, regardless of how much room the animals have when they are alive.

Veal crates have been banned in the UK since 1990, however veal is still produced in the UK under certain requirements, for example, calves must be able to turn around, they must be fed a diet containing some iron and they may not be kept in individual stalls or pens after the age of eight weeks. As of 2006, similar requirements will be law in the European Union; at present they are only applicable for holdings that have been newly built or rebuilt as of January of 1998.

Here’s a quick look at some of the HSUS’s work to free calves from crates.

State Laws

The HSUS has helped pass laws to ban veal crates in several states, including Arizona,CaliforniaColoradoMaineMichigan, and Ohio.

Investigations

Our undercover investigation of a “bob veal” slaughter plant shined a bright light onto the abuses that male dairy calves can endure.

Corporations

After working with The HSUS, retailers such as Wolfgang Puck no longer serve veal from calves confined in crates. Strauss Veal, the largest U.S. veal producer, and Marcho Farms, have both converted their veal operations to crate-free housing.

Individuals

The HSUS offers materials that make it easier for consumers to avoid supporting veal cratesand that’s one of the ways you can help! Some include our guide to meat and dairy labels, our list of dairy-free and delicious products, and dozens of delicious, humane recipes.

A brief guide to labels and animal welfare

The Humane Society of the United States

An abundance of labels on meat and dairy products make such claims as “grass fed,” “cage free” and “natural.” What exactly do these labels mean, especially in terms of animal welfare?

Some of the claims represent better conditions for animals than those suffered by the billions who are raised on standard factory farms, while others don’t relate to the animals’ welfare at all. So, how meaningful are these labels?

The following are the most common labels, decoded:-take a look so you know what your buying:- http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/confinement_farm/facts/meat_dairy_labels.html

“Eastleigh Farm says goodbye to Framingham herd matriarch”

FRAMINGHAM

As dairy owner Doug Stephan’s first milk cow, Peaches was Eastleigh Farm’s grande dame. With a beautifully coiffed top-knot crown and way of communicating with farmhands, the brown Jersey girl commanded respect.

“She’s always been extraordinarily regal,” farm worker Georgette Jowdy said.

As the 22-year-old bovine laid her tired legs on a bed of hay Friday morning, her large brown eyes showed that she seemed to know her reign as matriarch was over.

Stephan planned to put Peaches down Friday afternoon, 10 years after retiring her to his home pasture on Grove Street, around the corner from Eastleigh on Edmands Road.

Stephan choked back tears as he sat beside his beloved cow in the barn beside his house, talking about her seemingly psychic abilities, the seven calves she delivered and how she got her name from the vocalist duo Peaches & Herb.

He planned to bury Peaches near his late father’s ashes in the yard, and near a plaque for farm manager Edgar Pless, who died last summer.

“It’s a tough day,” said Jowdy, Pless’ wife, who raises the farm’s calves and had a close bond with Peaches after working there for 14 years. “It’s especially tough for Doug.”

As Peaches put her head on his lap, Stephan recalled bringing the cow and her cousin, Cream, to live at Eastleigh when they were four- or five-day-old heifers.

Cream later died, and the “extraordinarily sharp” Peaches went on to rule the herd. “She was always the boss cow,” Stephan said. “She would show up, get unloaded off the trailer and everyone would clear the way. She was in charge,” Jowdy said.

“She has an aura about her,” Stephan said. “I mean there’s a little crown.” Eastleigh retires its cows instead of slaughtering them after their milking years. It lets them graze in the home pasture, or gives them away to be “lawnmowers,” Jowdy said.

They give their whole life to give us food,” she said. Strong-willed Peaches lived a long life for a cow and couldn’t stand up at the end, Jowdy said. “They get arthritis, like we do,” she said. “They get bone loss, they get muscle loss.” Peaches, she said, “gave milk for a long, long time and babies – a lot of babies.”

A lineage chart in the barn shows that Peaches delivered Patches, Elsie, Beth, Herbie, Plum, Samantha and Beulah. Apricot, Emma and Elke joined the family tree as future generations. They are among the hundreds of cows that Stephan raises.

Resting in her stall before the veterinarian arrived, Peaches enjoyed lots of snacks in addition to her grain: whole wheat bread, croissant and, a special treat, doughnuts.

“We’re indulging her a lot,” Jowdy said. Jowdy said she was comforted by the fact that Peaches would be joining her late husband. “I like to believe because it’s comforting that he’s there waiting for her,” she said.

“Why can’t all farmers have the compassion & love for their animals as the above man does?  I really take my hat off to this farmer for his loyalty & love of his animals. He appreciates that they give their milk & their babies; in return they get to be cow’s, retired & munching on grass!”

Man ‘Raped Multiple Miniature Horses & Killed The Barn Dog Trained To Protect Them’

Comments Off on Man ‘Raped Multiple Miniature Horses & Killed The Barn Dog Trained To Protect Them’

A woman is trying to catch a man she says broke into her barn on several occasions, sexually abused her miniature horses and then killed the guard dog they trained to protect them. “He has to be found before he commits any more heinous acts like this!”

Abby Conder, from Florida, said her miniature horse Joy – who she treats like one of her children – is traumatized and sustained life-threatening injuries after the man broke in and raped her in the recent attack – which have been taking place since May.

Mrs Conder said: ‘She had been severely brutalized, she had been raped both by a man and with several objects.

Owner: Abby Conder treats her horse Joy like one of her children and said she is deeply troubled by the spate of rapes performed on her prized horses

Pets: Abby Conder keeps a number of prized miniature horses in a barn outside her home and has recently installed CCTV footage to find the culprit

‘She had a large hematoma [sic] on the back and so bloody that she looked like her whole body had been put through a garbage disposal.’

The vet found bodily fluids inside the horse.

The Marion county sheriff investigators took a report but said they could not help unless the suspect was caught in the act.

The couple bought a dog to protect the horses but he was beaten to death as well.

Suspect: Mrs Conder is hoping someone will recognize the man in the video so they can catch him and put an end to the senseless attacks

Mrs Conder told Fox2‘We have to catch him in the act and then call the police. But we don’t want to die trying to protect our horses. The horse can’t fight, they don’t know to fight. They would go with anyone.

Trauma: Joy was severely brutalized and had been raped both by a man and with several objects, Mrs Conder said

I’ve never shot a gun in my life but if I catch this man in this barn taking out another one of my horses and he’s gonna traumatize this young horse and hurt her internally like he has my other horses, I will come down and I will kill him.’ “Good for you girl, just make sure you aim at his private parts, where it’s gonna hurt the most & hopefully stop this heinous pastime!”

The horse owners then installed surveillance and a live internet feed. On Saturday the man once again sneaked into the barn, took one of the horses outside and performed the same abuse.

Mrs Conder is hoping that someone will recognize the man from the CCTV footage and they can put a stop to these heinous acts.

In 2011, Florida passed a law banning sex with animals.

Caught on camera: Moment 33-ton aquarium bursts in shopping centre, showering crowds with LIVE SHARKS and shards of glass

Comments Off on Caught on camera: Moment 33-ton aquarium bursts in shopping centre, showering crowds with LIVE SHARKS and shards of glass

“I saw this in the news, so thought mum wouldn’t mind me posting it on her behalf!”

The tank was an attraction at the entrance to the Shanghai Orient shopping centre in China‘s second city when it shattered without warning on December 19.

Eight of those hurt were customers and the rest were shop assistants and security staff. They mostly suffered deep cuts and bruises from sheets of broken glass.

In the footage below, it is possible to see that the majority of the people were standing right near the aquarium when it exploded.

Shoppers fled in panic as shards of 15cm thick acrylic glass gave way, flooding the entrance of the shopping centre.

Before the accident

A police spokesman said: ‘There were lots of injuries caused by flying glass, some of them serious because the glass was so thick. We are investigating what caused this.’

Three lemon sharks and dozens of turtles and smaller fish, which were housed in the aquarium, were also victims of the accident that was caught on CCTV.

A rush of water and broken glass bursts out of the tank and heads towards the people looking at it

While no official reason has been given for the accident, customers said that they believe a sudden drop in temperature may have caused the burst, as the weather apparently grew much colder in Shanghai last week.

The aquarium was reportedly very popular when it first opened before the National Day holiday two years ago, but there have been problems with the tank before, as in June a ruptured water pipe led to the death of two sharks and the removal of several turtles.

Chen Yongping, an official with the shopping centre management, said that they are not going to ‘build an aquarium again in the future’.

Sheep butchered to death in ‘barbaric’ farm raids, England

Comments Off on Sheep butchered to death in ‘barbaric’ farm raids, England

“WTF…I can only think that whoever is doing it, knows about sheep & either has a grudge against this farmer, or has been offered a good price if they can get hold of these rare sheep cuts! It can’t be religious, or they would have cut their necks, surely? They must be bloody desperate for money to cut the legs off live sheep though…Sick heartless bastards…I would also say that they would be pretty well covered in blood, so somebody knows someone, who is coming home covered in blood…plus, how do these people know the animals aren’t infected etc. there taking a big health risk too?”

“If you know who it is, please do the right thing, money isn’t everything…wouldn’t you rather have a clear conscience, & be able to sleep at night; instead of waiting for that dreaded knock at the door? because the police will find whoever has done this, if you don’t want to be dragged down with them…make the call!”

THIEVES cut off the legs of 10 sheep while they were still alive in a series of raids on a farm in Greater Manchester.

Sixty five-year-old farmer William Perkins found his butchered animals, including several pregnant ewes, dead with their back legs removed at the hip.

This is the fourth nighttime attack on the Stockport farm in the last fortnight.

It is believed a dog was used to round-up his flock before they were attacked and the incident has left Mr Perkins and his wife Joan devastated.

The farmhouse is away from the fields and the couple have been using their CCTVsystem to try to catch the criminals in the act.

Picture of black welsh mountain sheep

Mr Perkins said: “It is horrific and barbaric but very surgical – they know about butchering and have cut the legs off 10 sheep at the hip bone.

“Someone has cut them off in a field in pitch black and also knows about sheep as none that have been killed are over two-years-old, as beyond that age they are mutton.

“Every night, I wake up and have a look at our CCTV to check if anyone is there. The people who have done this are inhuman to be able to cut the legs off an animal while it is still alive. To see what has happened the following day has been a massive shock.”

Mr Perkins, who lives with his wife and son David, has been breeding sheep for 20 years and now has around 70 remaining.

Castlemilk moorits, Portlands, black Welsh mountain sheep and Hebrideans are among the rare breeds lost.

Police are warning other farmers to be vigilant and Insp Stephen Gilbertson said the thieves have gone to a lot of trouble.

Man Arrested For Kicking Kittens Across Grocery Store Parking Lot

Comments Off on Man Arrested For Kicking Kittens Across Grocery Store Parking Lot

“At last he has been caught, I remember doing this story back in May. Lets hope he gets what he deserves; if he can do that to a kitten in public, what happens behind closed doors?”

AUSTIN — Austin police have arrested a man for kicking kittens and throwing them across a grocery store parking lot. Mark Sheldon Watson, 29, is charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals. That’s a state jail felony.

According to his arrest affidavit, on May 12, 2012, Watson came to the HEB located at 2110 W. Slaughter Lane with a box of kittens to give away. The box said “Free Kittens for Mother’s Day.” When store managers asked Watson to leave the property, police say he became angry and violent.

Witnesses watched as Watson kicked the box of kittens, then picked one up and threw it hard, 50-60 feet across the parking lot. That kitten did not survive, but its brother, Banjo, did. Banjo was taken to an animal shelter in Travis County.

The affidavit says HEB has surveillance video of the incident showing the kitten hitting the ground, then shaking uncontrollably.

Police say witnesses tried following Watson but he picked up a cinder block and hurled it at them.

Investigators tried tracking down Watson. They released surveillance video of him walking away from the store.

Police were unable to make an arrest until Sept. 10. That’s when a woman came forward and reported that Watson was showing her the TV news reports of the incident on a smartphone and bragging that he was the one responsible.

Austin police arrested Watson and charged him with a state jail felony. If convicted, he faces up to two years in state jail.

His bond has been set at $10,000.

Man Found Guilty of Having Dog Kill Coral Springs Family’s Cat

Comments Off on Man Found Guilty of Having Dog Kill Coral Springs Family’s Cat

An 81 year old man who allowed his dog to maul a cat and was caught on video doing so, was found guilty by a jury today.

After only a day of testimony, the jury returned their verdict and found Hume Hamilton, 81, guilty of animal cruelty charges, a third degree felony.

Hume Hamilton was walking his pit bull when it attacked a cat belonging to Coral Springs resident Tia Spath.

Spath, who lives in Ridgeview, was shocked to find out that their cat named “Mama” had been killed at her family business, Brandy Bail Bonds, in Fort Lauderdale.   She says that Mama had been their pet for almost 12 years and was a fixture at the business

“Mama” the cat savaged by Pit bull

In the shocking surveillance video, the owner of a pit bull is seen walking on the property of Brandy Bail Bonds while following his dog’s lead to get closer to the cat, when the pit bull viciously attacks.

The dog’s strong jaws grab the cat and the owner cannot get him to release.

The man even tries to pull the cat out of the dog’s mouth, even stepping on the cat’s stomach. He finally he pulls the dog away, runs away, and  leaves the cat for dead.

Mama later died of her injuries and is buried at the business.

Hamilton had been held in jail since July without bond because he is facing charges for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was already on probation, so the judge held him without bond pending this trial.

He could face jail time for this crime when he is sentenced next month

Brian Freeman appears in Manhattan Criminal Court on Sept. 11, 2012. He’s charged with kicking a pit bull in the elevator of the Wagner Houses on August 26. Police surveillance video showed the attack, but Freeman’s lawyer claims that the attacker’s identity is not clear.

A Bronx man accused of viciously kicking a pit-bull in a Harlem elevator was held Tuesday in lieu of $3,500 bond.

Brian Freeman, 28, was caught on surveillance tape at the Wagner Houses on E. 120th St. on Aug. 26, leading the cowering pooch into the lift, then repeatedly kicking and punching the poor pup, prosecutors said.

Freeman’s father-in-law took the dog — a tan-and-white pitt-bull mix named Hazel — to an area animal shelter for treatment after the elevator beat-down, prosecutors said.

A rep for New York City Animal Care and Control said Hazel was doing “okay” Tuesday, but offered no additional details about her health.

Freeman, who was arrested yesterday on unrelated marijuana possession charges, was charged with one count of torturing an animal.

The video shows the “dog cower on the elevator floor and move around as if said dog was experiencing substantial pain,” according to the complaint.

Freeman’s lawyer said it’s impossible to determine who the attacker is based solely on the video. — Janon Fisher

According to Gothamist, the suspect “whose hair was in corn rows, was wearing a red T-shirt and baseball cap.”

Anyone with any information regarding the beating is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All Crime Stoppers calls are kept confidential.

Sadly, this story is quite familiar. Another Wagner Houses surveillance video last year caught dog owner Irving Sanchez mercilessly kicking his own pet pooch inside an elevator. Sanchez was charged with aggravated animal cruelty. (see below) And in 2010, three other such elevator dog beatings were caught on camera inside the Grant Houses, also in Harlem. (see below)

Sanchez was arrested the next day. He is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. Max was taken to an animal shelter.

May 12, 2010 Caught on Tape: Man Pleads Guilty to Beating Lap Dog in Elevator

If animal cruelty turns your stomach, you should not watch this video.

A man has admitted to viciously kicking his girlfriend’s lap dog in an attack police witnessed on security cameras installed in a Manhattan apartment building elevator.

Chris Grant has been sentenced to three months in jail after pleading guilty to an animal cruelty charge. He’s 21. “Three months in jail…ridiculous, should have been 3 years or more…if he is so flippant about abusing the dog in an elevator, what does he do behind closed doors?…FxxxxxG Knob Head. He will be out now, probably abusing some other innocent dog, which is just heartbreaking & gut wrenching, thinking about what he could be doing! Will he be caught NO. However if the Animal Abuse Registry had been operating, at least officers could keep a check on him…I loved the News girls reaction, I too would like to kick his nads in!!

Police officers monitoring surveillance cameras in the Harlem building as part of a search for a murder suspect arrested Grant when they saw him on tape abusing the black-and-white Chihuahua and Pomeranian mix, named Chuvi-Duvi.

The cameras captured Grant patting his knees as if to invite the 12-pound dog to be petted, then kicking it away. His lawyer didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday. Tests showed Chuvi-Duvi escaped serious injury. The plea was entered Tuesday.“On the outside perhaps, but that beating & others the dog probably received, could have caused serious Psychological  implications! Abuse, stays with the victim, for life, no matter what kind or to whom, it is never forgotten, trust me!”

Police later found the man accused of stabbing nine-year old Anthony Maldonado, the victim of one of the city’s first homicides of 2010.

The two crimes were not connected, but Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said solving them involved the same basic tools: a camera, and a cop paying attention.

In condemning the alleged dog-kicker at the time, Kelly called Grant “an abusive individual who repeatedly and brutally beat a small defenseless dog.”

See for yourself, but if you’re an animal lover, be advised: it’s tough to watch.

On January  2012 –More dog abuse in housing project elevator

Vodpod videos no longer available.

A New York City woman has been charged after police say she was caught on video kicking and jerking her Pomeranian on an elevator in the same housing project where surveillance cameras captured a dog being beaten earlier this month.

Tiara Davis was charged with torturing and injuring an animal Monday. The incident was recorded by video cameras in the elevators of the Grant Houses Sunday morning. Police released the videos Tuesday.

The video shows Sparky, her 4-year-old Pomeranian, being beaten and jerked by its leash until unconscious. Davis, 31, said she lost her temper when the dog relieved himself before getting outside. “I kept telling him, ‘Sparky! Wait! Wait!’ ” Davis, a vocational counselor for ex-offenders, told the New York Daily News. “I became a little frustrated,” she added. “It was never my intention to hurt him.” Sparky is recovering at the ASPCA hospital

Cat swing trial: Animal cruelty case thrown out due to lack of evidence

Comments Off on Cat swing trial: Animal cruelty case thrown out due to lack of evidence

Riain Richards, 20, was alleged to have swung the black cat around by its tail about 17 times in 30 seconds in front of friends who cheered him on.

Shocking: A man was caught on CCTV swinging a cat around by its tail

The case against a man accused of swinging a cat by its tail in the street was thrown out of court today because of a lack of evidence.

After hearing the prosecution‘s case against 20-year-old Riain Richards, magistrates decided there was not enough evidence for a conviction and no case to answer.

Richards, of Clements Road, Ramsgate, Kent, was alleged to have swung two-year-old Mowgli around about 17 times in 30 seconds in front of friends who cheered him on, Dover Magistrates’ Court was told.

Richards denied causing unnecessary suffering to the cat on October 29 last year. The court heard that the attack would have left the cat physically and mentally traumatised.

Magistrate Gillian Monk said: “Cruelty of any description is abhorrent to civilised society and we are saddened and sickened by the way that the cat was tortured that morning.

Mrs Monk said that, having considered all the evidence present and submissions made by both sides, there was no case to answer.

She said: “The CCTV and photographic evidence presented is of such poor quality that it is hard to identify any distinguishing features.

“No forensic evidence was found at Mr Richards’ home or on his computer. “Nothing we have seen or heard has securely placed his hands on that cat.”

The court was told that the incident, which took place near The Camden Arms in La Belle Alliance Square, Ramsgate, was captured on CCTV which was released by the RSPCA.

It shows the animal’s attacker seemingly dancing down the road with the black cat at arm’s length. The animal is then seen hitting the arm of another man.

Grainy: The court heard that the CCTV footage was too poor quality to identify Riain Richards

RSPCA prosecutor Rowan Jenkins said Lynne Jarvis, a neighbour of the cat’s owner, Michelle Buchanan, looked out of her window when she heard a commotion outside.

Since the incident the cat has been too frightened to go outside and his behaviour has dramatically changed, she said.

CCTV of the attack was seen by a vet who said the cat would have suffered physical and mental trauma from being swung at such force, the court was told.

NSW to toughen abattoir standards – Video

Comments Off on NSW to toughen abattoir standards – Video

Transcript

TONY JONES, PRESENTER: The NSW Government will tomorrow announce what it calls tough measures to lift animal welfare standards in the state’s domestic abattoirs.

Each abattoir will be required to have a designated animal welfare officer, a change to the system flowing from Lateline‘s reporting on extreme cruelty in an abattoir near Sydney.

Kerry Brewster reports, and a warning: this story does contain some disturbing vision.

Transcript

KERRY BREWSTER, REPORTER: Footage aired on Lateline earlier in the year showed what the NSW Government described as gross animal mistreatment in the Hawkesbury Valley abattoir. Fully conscious pigs beaten before slaughter, cattle jabbed repeatedly with electric prods.

The expose prompted a NSW Government review. The result: mandatory animal welfare training for those slaughtering animals and the requirement for an animal welfare officer chosen and paid for by each abattoir to monitor and take responsibility for the welfare of animals.

KATRINA HODGKINSON, NSW MINISTER FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRIES: So the animal welfare officer will be in place, will be trained and will able to oversee the operations on the cutting floor.

KERRY BREWSTER: Will a welfare officer be able to shut down operations if he sees a breach?

KATRINA HODGKINSON: A welfare officer will be able to stop operations if he notices – he or she notices a breach, but it will then also be their responsibility to report straight to management.

KERRY BREWSTER: Animal rights activists who believe cruelty in Australian abattoirs is common dismiss the NSW reform.

EMMA HURST, ANIMAL LIBERATION: These changes appear to be a smokescreen, especially if the new inspectors are going to be actually hired by the abattoir themselves. There’s unlikely to be any sort of major changes that occur because of this.
NSW will tomorrow announce new measures to lift animal welfare standards at abattoirs, including mandatory designated animal welfare officers at each abattoir.

KERRY BREWSTER: The NSW review rejected the use of CCTV cameras to monitor slaughtering.

EMMA HURST: Why is there a resistance from the Government for the CCTV cameras. We can’t guarantee that that one officer will be able to see all acts of cruelty within that abattoir, whereas the cameras will catch everything and workers will know that they’re constantly being watched.

KERRY BREWSTER: But the NSW Government says a change in abattoir culture, not cameras, will reduce cruelty.

KATRINA HODGKINSON: It all comes back to training, making sure that the employees and the staff understand the importance of animal welfare and respect that.

KERRY BREWSTER: Following an investigation, Hawkesbury Valley Abattoir will be fined just over $5,000 for breaching its licence conditions. The Government says further investigation by the RSPCA may result in additional penalties.
