SeaWorld Refutes New Film That Exposes the Cruel Treatment of Captive Whales

The new documentary ‘Blackfish’ reveals the inner workings of the multi-billion dollar seapark industry.

SeaWorld has unleashed a bitter attack on the new documentary Blackfish, accusing the filmmakers of being “shamelessly dishonest,” and filling the movie with serious inaccuracies.

As someone who has followed the saga of Tilikum and deceased trainer Dawn Brancheau for years, I was happy to rebut SeaWorld’s various grievances. The inaccuracies, it turns out, are found in spokesman Fred Jacob’s “Dear Film Critic” letter, which was sent out today:

I’m writing to you on behalf of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. You may be aware of a documentary called “Blackfish” that purports to expose SeaWorld’s treatment of killer whales (or orcas) and the “truth” behind the tragic death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010.

In the event you are planning to review this film, we thought you should be apprised of the following. Although “Blackfish” is by most accounts a powerful, emotionally-moving piece of advocacy, it is also shamefully dishonest, deliberately misleading, and scientifically inaccurate. As the late scholar and U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously noted: “You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts.”

The film’s most egregious and untrue allegations include: The insinuation that SeaWorld stocks its parks with killer whales captured from the wild. In fact, SeaWorld hasn’t collected a killer whale from the wild in more than 35 years; more than 80% of the killer whales at SeaWorld were born there or in other zoological facilities.

First of all, an “insinuation” is not an accusation, and Blackfish does not make this claim. It is worth pointing out, however, that the wild orca Morgan, who was rescued in waters off the Netherlands a few years back, now lives at Loro Parque, Spain; in its SEC filing there, SeaWorld claimed her as one of their own whales, just as they own the other orcas in the park.

The assertion that killer whales in the wild live more than twice as long as those living at SeaWorld. While research suggests that some wild killer whales can live as long as 60 or 70 years, their average lifespan is nowhere near that. Nor is it true that killer whales in captivity live only 25 to 35 years.

Because we’ve been studying killer whales at places like SeaWorld for only 40 years or so, we don’t know what their lifespans might be—though we do know that SeaWorld currently has one killer whale in her late 40s and a number of others in their late 30s.

The research completed to date does not “suggest” average life expectancies and maximum lifespans; it methodically and scientifically documents them, at least among resident killer whales of the Pacific Northwest.

As I reported in Death at SeaWorld: “The average life expectancy for female orcas in the wild has been estimated at 45 to 50 years, with a maximum lifespan of about 90,” and, “the average life expectancy for a wild orca male is approximately 30 years, with an estimated maximum lifespan of about 60.”

Dog Dies In Asbury Park After Being Left Out In The Heat

Comments Off on Dog Dies In Asbury Park After Being Left Out In The Heat

ASBURY PARK – Two city residents have been charged with animal cruelty after two Pit Bulls were left out in the sun with no water or shade on Wednesday, resulting in the death of one of the dogs, police said.

Juanita White, 48, owned the dogs and Davina L. Kearney, 30, was watching the dogs, named Boogie and Monster, at her home on Ridge Avenue, Monmouth County SPCA Chief Victor Amato said. Both women were charged with animal cruelty.

“[The dogs] tried to save themselves by digging holes in the ground over a foot and a half deep to get out of the sun,” Amato said.

Monster tried to jump a chain link fence to reach shade in a neighbours yard and hung himself, Amato said, while Boogie was chained to the fence and alive when police arrived after a neighbour alerted authorities.

“These two dogs in that back yard no doubt barked and cried for a long time before the one died,” Amato said.

Both women were charged with failure to provide proper shelter, failure to provide proper water, procuring the death of the dogs and were released on their own recognizance.

Amato said people need to use common sense with animals and the heat.

“If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for the dogs”

According to the NJ.com, Dazile was dog sitting for the the Yorkie named Levi and allegedly placed the dog outside on the neighboring roof through the window of his apartment because the dog was barking. Levi was left in a metal cage with no water.

Dazile has been charged with not providing proper shelter, not providing drinking water, and inflicting unnecessary cruelty resulting in the death of a dog.

Neighbors heard a dog barking, but could not place where the dog was located. Finally according to ABC News, a neighbor spotted the cage on the roof and called authorities. By the time Animal Control arrived, tiny Levi was dead.

“Know what kind of person you leave your dog with and check them out,” stated Barbara Wilcotts of Miami. “I’m a professional dog sitter and sadly I hear about dreaded accidents like this. It should never have happened. This man deserves to be punished. That poor little dog died an excruciatingly painful death. It’s so tragic I could just cry.”

If found guilty of animal cruelty, Dazile could face the maximum of $1,000 in fines and six months in jail.

Dazile is due in court for his first appearance on June 17.

Rest in peace Levi.

Mother Of Two Spared Jail After Letting Dog Die Slow And Painful Death; Six Weeks Locked In Bathroom

Comments Off on Mother Of Two Spared Jail After Letting Dog Die Slow And Painful Death; Six Weeks Locked In Bathroom

“WTF…if an alcoholic mother of 2 , literally locked a dog in a toilet then walked away; leaving the dog unattended to die of starvation amongst other things…One has to ask…are those children safe? She knew it was wrong, the dog died an unimaginably slow death…so why no prison sentence? We are talking about a life, irrelevant whether a dog or not! A shop lifter would have been sentenced to more! This alcoholic piece of shit has got off so lightly, she isn’t fit to look after pets period, never mind children!! Judging by how much these court proceedings costs, the RSPCA…needn’t have bloody bothered!!”

  • Laura Shaw, 23, abandoned pet Lulu when the animal fell ill
  • Dog was found dead and covered in flies with ‘overpowering foul stench’
  • Unemployed alcoholic fined and banned from keeping animals

Heartless: Laura Shaw has been convicted of animal cruelty after leaving her pet dog to die

Please note: Graphic Images Below!!

An unemployed alcoholic mother who locked her dog in a toilet and left it to die has walked free from court. “To literally lock that dog in the bathroom then walk away, show’s she was of sound mind!”

Laura Shaw, 23, abandoned her pet Lulu for six weeks, and has now been banned from keeping animals for the next 10 years. How long before she will do something similar to another living being??? I have a feeling we are going to encounter this name again;because her sentence won’t have done diddley squat to deter her from committing such an evil act again!!

Horrific images shown in court revealed how the animal was found covered in swarms of flies, surrounded by the empty food bowls it tried to eat.

The mother of two was prosecuted by the RSPCA, but escaped jail after a hearing at Grimsby Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard how the dog was found dead last August in a downstairs toilet at Shaw’s former home in Grimsby, surrounded by faeces and urine.

Prosecutor Nigel Burn said there was an ‘overpowering foul stench‘ and the house was swarming with large flies.

Empty plates and a bowl were found and it looked as though they had been bitten by the black cross-bred dog in a desperate attempt to satisfy its hunger. “I find this sentence strange, as below, SHAW reckon’s the dog would not eat or drink anything…if it tried to eat the bowls, obviously it wanted & needed to eat anything going!”

Shaw, now of no fixed address, admitted two offences of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog by failing to provide veterinary care and leaving it unattended without adequate food and water. “Strikes me, booze would have been more important to buy, than food for the poor dog!”

She claimed that she was scared to seek help after the dog became ill, but when she was asked about the animal’s death she admitted: ‘It must have been traumatic and it must have been lonely and scared.’ “WTF…why was she scared?? I can think of only one reason you would be SCARED to take a dog to a vet…that would be if a previous animal had been abused & taken to a vet; who asked too many questions!! I wonder, did that dog ever visit a vet??

Lauren Fisher, mitigating, said the dog stopped eating and drinking and that she tried giving it milk and different dog food brands, without success. “A dog may be picky with food, but will eat if hungry… but to not drink either, sounds very suspicious. I would like to know if a necropsy was done & what it said! If one wasn’t done, why?? Alarm bells should be ringing in a case like this; with a necropsy being the first thing done! “

Things spiralled out of control,’ she said. ‘She did not get the help that was necessary for the dog and neglected her duty as an owner to take the dog to the vet’s.’

Tragic: The dog was apparently abandoned after she fell ill and started refusing the food she was given

Ms Fisher added that Shaw’s former home had been burgled after her windows were smashed and that a large amount of her property had been stolen, causing her ‘extreme unhappiness’. “OH fxxxxxg boo hoo!! Not as unhappy as the bloody dog; I bet!”

She left the house ‘feeling scared and unable to cope’ and abandoned the dog, who was aged about 18 months to two years. “Yea, I bet the poor bloody dog felt scared because it was abandoned…probably thought it better to buy booze than vet bills & food…sick bitch!”

The court heard that the defendant also had more than £10,000 of debts.

Judge Sam Goozee told Shaw: ‘You have committed a cruel and despicable offence. The pictures I have seen show the horror and pain that Lulu must have gone through in what was a very slow death.

‘The conditions in which she was found are disgusting and she clearly had been dead for a while.

Squalid: The house in Grimsby was filled with an overwhelming stink when the dog was found last year

Probation officer Graham Marshall said Shaw had been a mental health support worker but lost her job and later ‘drank to oblivion every day whenever she could’.

‘Looking after an animal brings responsibility and you simply ignored those responsibilities.

‘Can you imagine what it would be like if a child went through what Lulu did? As an adult, you would never place a child in that position and you should not place an animal in that position.’ “A life is a life, that dog suffered the same as a child would, except it wouldn’t have got that far with a child because friends, neighbours, social workers etc. would have said something…but it was only a dog…that doesn’t make it any less of a heinous cruel & cold hearted thing to do!”

Shaw was handed 200 hours of unpaid work, banned from keeping animals for ten years and ordered to pay £150 costs. “Well they might as well not bothered… what’s the point in a fine when she is already in debt? This sentence is weak & pathetic & stinks!!

Speaking after the verdict, an RSPCA spokesman said: ‘This was a shocking incident. The poor animal would have suffered terribly, and it is terrible to leave a living creature to die like this.

‘We hope this sends a clear to message to people that neglect or abuse of animals is not acceptable.’ “No it’s not, & THIS DOESN’T SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE TO SAY ANIMAL ABUSE IS UNACCEPTABLE…WTF…what was her penance? Banned from owning animals for 10 years, 200 unpaid hours & £150 costs??? WTF…WTF does that say to other animals abusers? NOT ENOUGH TO STOP THEM…THAT’S WHAT…WHEN WILL THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM START GROWING SOME BALLS & MAKING PEOPLE PAY BY GIVING PRISON SENTENCES

Heart Breaking: Dog Braves Traffic To Guard Slain Companion

Comments Off on Heart Breaking: Dog Braves Traffic To Guard Slain Companion

“Heartbreaking…this just show’s the level of emotion animals have! How can anyone doubt, that their feelings are so different to our very own? They show more compassion than most humans do!”

These photos show a scene that is deeply saddening, but remarkably heart-touching.  A stray male dog in Zhangzhou, China stood over his deceased female companion who had likely been struck by a car, all while risking being struck himself.

“The purity of a person’s heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals”   ~By Anonymous

Compassion!!

He is known to locals as Zhangzhou, and was heartbroken when his mate was killed.  Butcher Xiao Wu said he frequently saw the pair playing together, and had just begun feeding them.  He watched as the forlorn dog licked his friend’s face and lovingly nudged her with his nose, as if trying to wake her.  He tried to hug her, and Wu could swear he was crying.

“If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans” ~ James Herriot

Compassion!!

“He stayed beside her the whole day, licking her and pushing her, trying to wake her up.  It’s very touching,” Wu explained.  “Then he pushed her with his head, and licked her face.  I even saw tears.”

Perhaps people were afraid of the oncoming traffic, are desensitized to seeing dogs struck by cars or just have cultural differences that cause dogs’ lives to not be as highly valued as they are in the US, but no one appears to have attempted to move either dog from the street for some time.  Zhangzhou held his vigil for his lost loved one for over six hours.

“An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.” ~ Martin Buber

Still think animals don’t have feelings or show compassion?

“Every one can master a grief but he that has it.” ~ William Shakespeare

“To spare oneself from grief at all cost can be achieved, only at the price of total detachment, which excludes the ability to experience happiness.” ~ Erich Fromm

Dead dog found in the middle of road in it’s bed???

Comments Off on Dead dog found in the middle of road in it’s bed???

“How bizarre, well it didn’t take itself into the middle of the road, get into bed, curl up & die! Somebody put that poor we thing there, either to get a kick out of it, or because the dog died & rather than do the right thing, they tossed it out onto the road! I think a necropsy is vital to find out if there are any suspicious actions going on. To whoever put it there…you are sick & in need of some physcological help!”

A Port Charlotte woman made a gruesome discovery – a dead puppy curled up in its bed sitting in the middle of the road.

The case is still a mystery to animal control officers who are asking for your help.

Jennifer Baiardi is a dog lover. “I mean, I love animals,” she says.

She’s repeatedly turned down offers from people looking to buy her pit bull, Shiloh. So she was never prepared for what she discovered Friday.

“I’m still trying to get over it,” she said.

While doing some yard work, she noticed a small dog bed lying in the road.

“I didn’t think anything of it, at first,” Baiardi admits.

Eventually, reluctantly, she walked across the street to see what was in the bed.

“It shocked me. I cannot believe people can do something like that, I just can’t,” she says.

Baiardi found a Chihuahua puppy stiff and dead wearing a T-shirt curled up in its bed underneath a towel.

“It’s like it fell asleep and never woke up,” explains Lt. Brian Jones with Charlotte County Animal Control

In 15 years working for animal control, Jones has never seen anything like this.

“I was just astounded. We were speechless like ‘wow, don’t see that everyday’,” he admits.

Jones is investigating the case, but doesn’t know who owned the dog or how it died. He has more questions than answers right now.

“We don’t know how it ended up there. It seemingly just dropped out of the clear blue sky,” Jones says.

Investigators haven’t ruled out animal cruelty playing a role in the dog’s death and haven’t decided whether or not to conduct a necropsy.

Baiardi doesn’t recognize the dog from the neighbourhood, but hopes animal control can find out who it belonged to.

Investigators say they’ve canvassed the neighbourhood – at the intersection of Blossom and Norwood streets – looking for clues.

They point out that the dog appeared to be well cared for.

If you have any information about the dog, call animal control at 941-833-5690. You can remain anonymous.

Judge postpones sentence in Irish bestiality case where woman died

Comments Off on Judge postpones sentence in Irish bestiality case where woman died

“WTF…it sickens me to know that these gluttonous savages are trawling the internet, searching for people to partake in diabolical & positively revolting act’s of bestiality; with their so-called pets!!”

“I’ll bet this wasn’t the first time the barbarous brute below, used the poor dog for his own prurient carnal gratification. But, I can’t understand why it was put down with ‘McDonnell’s’ consent? Unless it was on a vets advice, due to the trauma or internal damage the dog was subjected to…if it was then he needs to be convicted of animal abuse too. This is why we need an Animal Abuse Register!!”

“The Defence for this sadist even say’s ‘If the lady had not died’ there would be no charges…like it’s nothing out of the ordinary!! In which case, I can’t help but wonder how many animals are out there, being molested & as long as there is no injury…it’s all fxxxxxg dandy…Filthy miscegenation! “

“My God, that poor dog, I think I am relieved he was sent over Rainbow Bridge; where he can finally rest in peace, knowing the only hands that will touch him now are those that are kind & pure!”

A woman died at Sean McDonnell’s home after she had sex with his dog.

A JUDGE yesterday adjourned sentencing in a case in which evidence was given of the defendant’s interest in pornography and bestiality.

Seán McDonnell (58) pleaded guilty to one count of buggery with an animal, namely a German Shepherd-type dog, at his home on October 7th, 2008. It is believed to be the first case of its kind in an Irish court.

Evidence was given that he had arranged for a woman to have sex with his dog. He had met her on an internet chat room.

The woman – a 48-year-old separated mother from Co Limerick, who was not named in court – died in hospital hours after engaging in an act of bestiality with the animal.

Det Garda Pádraig O’Dwyer, Roxboro Road Garda station, accepted that while the woman and the dog engaged in an act of bestiality, no exact cause of death could be found.

“This is a very obscene case,” remarked Denis Vaughan Buckley, senior prosecution counsel, as he outlined the evidence.

He said McDonnell telephoned the emergency services from his house at Laurel Park, Patrickswell, Co Limerick. “The deceased had turned blue and was wearing unusual clothing,” he said.

Det Garda O’Dwyer said the accused accepted the woman had agreed, in an internet exchange, to have sex with the dog.

Evidence was given of blood, DNA and hair samples.

During a search at McDonnell’s home, gardaí discovered a computer “which confirmed the accused’s interest in bestiality”.

Mr Vaughan Buckley said the accused had posted 3,500 comments on bestiality forums. McDonnell’s computer also revealed multiple internet search hits for bestiality.

A computer, the property of the deceased, showed “extensive activity in pornography and bestiality websites”, Mr Vaughan Buckley said.

The dog was destroyed last week with McDonnell’s consent. Isobella Kennedy, defending, said: “My client would not have been prosecuted save for the lady in question passing away. The lady fully consented. There was no form of coercion or duress.”

Judge Carroll Moran described it as “a very unusual case” and adjourned sentencing to December 14th.
