Information about the Yulin Dog Meat Festival

Here is a list of the various levels of corruption I found connected to the festival:

*STOLEN PETS

“An animal rights lawyer in Beijing said that official claims that all dogs are bred by local dog farmers is false. An Xiang said according to research there are no such farms and that all dogs are abducted from the streets.”

“It is thought most dogs are pets or strays abducted from streets. Vendors then buy them for around nine yuan (85p) and sold for 25 yuan. People who steal the dogs make the biggest profits of all, the news agency said.

*CRIMINAL LAWS ARE BROKEN

“Some of the animal thieves broke Criminal Law using weapons to threaten residents to hand over their dogs,” Li said.

*MEAT NOT PROPERLY QUARANTINED

“Another risk factor highlighted is poor food safety. Liu Lang, director of the Beijing Small Animal Veterinary Association said butchers slaughtering the dogs are at risk of rabies, while the meat is not properly quarantined or inspected, increasing the chance of food safety problems.”

“While a quarantine regulation on dogs and cats was introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture last year, meaning all cats and dogs had to be quarantined before transport, this is rarely observed, he added.”

*ILLEGAL SLAUGHTERHOUSES

“Li said there were no dog farms or slaughterhouses that safely produce dog meat: “I was told there are four major workshops that produce dog meat in the city. I visited them and found all of them had no business licences or certificates.”

*UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO PROTECT ONE GROUP BUT NOT THE OTHER

“Medical staff have been banned from attending the dog meat festival by health authorities from three local hospitals: “According to the directive issued by higher authorities, hospital staff are prohibited from having dog meat at food stalls, restaurants or hotels in Yudong and Fumian districts,” the notice read.”

*HIDING THE FACTS/TRUTH

“According to South Morning China Post, local restaurants have been ordered to cover the word, dog, on signs to appease protesters: “Food safety authorities told us to change our signboards due to the objection of certain dog lovers,” staff members reportedly said.”

*LOCAL YULIN GOVERNMENT STILL CULPABLE*IT’S UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO NOT PROTECT YOUR CITIZENS“In Yulin, local authorities have stressed that they had no hand in organizing the controversial dog fest.

(http://www.worldcrunch.com/china-2.0/china-traditional-dog-meat-recipes-v.-new-animal-rights-activism/animal-rights-animals-shark-fins-dog-pets-wildlife/c9s17554/#.VI1hztKG89l)

Conclusion: Corruption is flagrant and decimating China’s cats and dogs ruins China’s reputation, threatening their economy.

Conclusion: The YDMF is detrimental to the social and moral development of China’s citizens.

Conclusion: China needs to develop animal welfare laws and not use the YDMF to “clean-up” their stray cats and dogs.

Conclusion: Allowing the YDMF to continue, contravenes the Chinese Constitution and other laws and administrative regulations because every aspect of the YDMF is illegal and makes China look bad in the world’s eyes. There is more to this festival than China’s ability and freedom to eat cats and dogs and the  false health benefits derived from part-taking in the consumption of cat and dog meat, but the festival enables corruption to run rampant throughout China and its bordering countries, like Vietnam. It is imperative to the people of China, specifically for the prosperity of their children, for the good of their social and moral development and the benefit of good health, that the local YuLin government be encouraged to cancel the festival.

WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO: Burning Dog Sparks Public Outcry In South Korea

Comments Off on WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO: Burning Dog Sparks Public Outcry In South Korea

“I know what I would like to do to the f-ing bastards that set the dog alight…the most horrifying fact is; it could well have been children! It has & will continue to happen until changes are made & animal abuse is seen as a serious crime; which merits serious punishment!!”

“I know for a fact there are people or kids out there, that know who did this; along with the thousands of others keeping schtum about similar animal abuse cases. Children are only interested in the here & now…they either don’t want to, or are bullied into not wanting to grass their mates up! They have no idea, nor can they relate to the repercussion, that first “act of animal abuse” can lead to.”

” I think kids should be taught about the “The link between animal abuse & serial killers etc” within the school environment. When problems escalate from children abusing animals etc.; then it’s children that need to know why animal abuse, of any kind is wrong & what the ramifications of committing such a crime…can lead to!”

A South Korean animal rights group offered a $2,800 dollar reward to catch those responsible for setting a dog on fire in an incident that triggered a public outcry.

CCTV footage of the dog running through a car park while engulfed in flames was shown on national TV news channels and prompted angry discussions on social network sites.

The dog ran into a garage and triggered a fire which gutted the structure in Yongin, a city south of Seoul, on Sunday.

The group Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth offered a three million won ($2,813) reward for information leading to the arrest of those behind the incident.

Whatever they tried to do, whether to kill, eat or abuse the dog, this cannot be tolerated for any reason,” the group said.

Dog meat is a traditional delicacy in South Korea, but growing numbers of Koreans oppose the practice and consider it an international embarrassment.

‘Happened …’ Burned to the car repair shop caught fire jumped

Published on 22 Jan 2013

Auto body shop a few days ago (20 days) in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, a fire did occur. Somehow the cause of the fire was this dog. JTBC affiliate reporter Kim, Youn – Tae Central Daily reported.

There is a petitions on Causes.com for people to join & sign, regards this dog & other dogs that are treated in such heinous crimes…this has to stop!…Please sign & join the cause below”

PETITION: South Korea! Stop Burning Dogs Alive!

Some of the text from the Cause:-

However, this is not an isolated case in South Korea.  Dogs are burned alive in South Korea everyday.

“Dogs are killed with high-voltage electrocution, which takes anywhere from thirty seconds to three minutes, hanged, and even beaten to death at the request of customers who believe the meat more tender and tastier the greater the suffering (one of the most pernicious of myths), and that the so-called medicinal properties are enhanced.

They are most often killed within sight of their cage mates. They are then thrown into a tub of boiling water, often still alive, and then into a rotating drum for the removal of their fur, and finally blow torched.  At Moran Market, South Korea’s largest open air-market for dog meat, dog carcasses are on display next to the cages of live dogs.

Cats are often bludgeoned and thrown into boiling water while still alive.”  Frightening and horrific cruelty to man’s best friends is endemic and systematic in South Korean society.

These unprecedented cruelty towards animals can no longer be tolerated and it is our moral duty to urge South Korean government to respect and enforce not just its own but the Global Animal Protection Laws.

Each year 2 million dogs and thousands of cats are brutally killed and eaten.  These helpless animals are forced to endure unspeakable suffering,  deprivation and torture from birth to death.  Abandoned pets end up as meat as well.

We oppose this on ethical, health, environmental and moral grounds.  It is unconscionable for the South Korean Government to ignore the huge growing shock and outcry on social media sites all over the world.

South Korean tradition of eating dog meat to beat the heat draws international criticism

Comments Off on South Korean tradition of eating dog meat to beat the heat draws international criticism

  • Known as ‘Bok-Nal’, South Koreans eat dog meat during the hottest days of summer because they believe it increases their stamina
  • Animal rights activists staged international protests against the tradition
  • The activists claim that the animals are kept in cramped cages and are slaughtered in cruel ways
  • Seoul is experiencing the hottest summer since 1994

Don’t eat: 2.5 million dogs are killed each year for consumption according to animal rights group In Defense of Animals. The protestors’ signs read ‘Don’t eat dog meat’

The South Korean belief that eating dog helps beat the heat in the summer months has angered animal rights activists around the world.

Worldwide anger: Animal rights activists staged protests around the world including Bangkok, Thailand where this woman painted her face and stood in front of the South Korea embassy, placard in hand

Known as ‘Bok-Nal’, the dog eating days, it is a ritual celebrated by South Koreans where dog meat is eaten to increase stamina during the hottest days of the year.

To coincide with the tradition, animal rights activists staged protests around the world today, packing into wired cages in various locations including in front of the South Korean embassies in Seoul, London and America.

While dog meat is consumed throughout the year, during Bok-Nal South Koreans consume more to combat the heat.

Dog meat restaurants in Seoul say they served more customers than usual today.

Animal rights group In Defense of Animals (IDAUSA) said dogs and cats are kept in cramped, filthy cages and slaughtered in unimaginable ways as part of the $2 billion dog and cat meat industry.A statement on their website said: ‘Two and a half million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, hanged, or beaten to death each year.

‘The dogs are slaughtered in unimaginable ways: electrocuted, hanged, and even beaten to death, because of the prevailing myth that the greater the suffering the more tender and tastier the meat, and that the mythical health properties are enhanced.

Thousands of cats are also eaten in soups and ‘tonics’.

IDAUSA said: ‘Cats are often bludgeoned and thrown into boiling water while still alive.’

According to Yonhap news agency, Seoul is experiencing the longest period of time with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius since 1994.

Dog meat trade flourishing, says watchdog

Comments Off on Dog meat trade flourishing, says watchdog

For many Filipinos, dogs are not their best friend but a favorite food.

Thus the illegal trade in dog meat continues to thrive with some 290,000 canines butchered for food each year, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police said Tuesday, on the heels of a successful operation against dog butchers in Pangasinan.

CAGE DOGS spared from slaughter.

Two dogs were given a new lease on life after they were rescued by CIDG operatives—along with the London-based animal rights group Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc.—from a slaughterhouse in San Carlos City.

The authorities shut down the illegal “abattoir” in Bonifacio village and arrested two men caught cleaning the carcasses of three dogs, the CIDG said in a statement.

Trading in dog meat has been illegal in the Philippines since 1998 under the Animal Welfare Act which states that no animals other than cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits, carabaos, horses, deer and crocodiles may be killed for food, unless it’s part of a religious ritual or when an animal is considered a danger to others or to control the animal population.

Violators face six months to two years in prison and a fine of at least P1,000.

The CIDG said the figure of 290,000 dogs slaughtered each year came from Linis Gobyerno Inc., a nongovernment watchdog.

On its website, Linis Gobyerno estimates the dog meat trade to be worth P174 million a year. It says the trade enjoys the “support and patronage of local officials,” which makes it difficult for law enforcers to arrest those engaged in it.

“In Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet, alone, there are around 60 restaurants, eateries and canteens that serve dog meat. These are found all over the city, including the central business district, and are patronized by no less than local politicians, heads of government offices, policemen and even professionals,” it said.

In the CIDG operation on Monday, the law enforcers saved two dogs that were tied up in a makeshift cage, said Senior Superintendent Ferdinand O. Divina, CIDG Region I chief.

“The suspects, Danny E. Samira and Jansen C. Tagaduar,  were caught red-handed in the act of cleaning the butchered dogs,” Divina said.

Last week, CIDG Director Samuel Pagdilao Jr. met with Glyn Ford, a former member of the European Parliament and an executive director of consultancy firm Polint, who called for the stringent enforcement of the law protecting dogs.

Pagdilao said he had ordered all CIDG regional heads to strictly enforce the law against the dog meat trade.

He also said consumers risked contracting rabies and other diseases when they ate dog meat.

Important – More News Regards 500 Dogs Rescued April 20th China – Videos

Comments Off on Important – More News Regards 500 Dogs Rescued April 20th China – Videos

“My apologies, I have only just seen this full account, of what happened regards the dogs that were rescued. After reading this, I have even more admiration for those that came out in force, to save these dogs. It just goes to show, what can be achieved when like minded people come together; Massive thanks to them all. Let’s hope this show’s those in power, that there are many Chinese people who do not agree to the eating of cat’s & dogs, pray they put a stop to this archaic tradition!!”

On the night of April the 19th, an urgent message via Weibo (Chinese Twitter) said that there was a truck filled with caged dogs coming towards the Fumin-KunmingHighway. Hundreds of loving citizens came to the toll station on the highway within half an hour in an effort to stop the truck, which has to pass through there. The volunteers called local police and at 11pm the truck, with 505 dogs in 156 cages, was stopped at the toll station on the highway of Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province, southwest of China.

Both the caged dogs and the volunteers were made to wait over night at the police station for officers from various local governments to arrive. During this time volunteers tried their best to provide water and food for the poor dogs who were all squeezed into the cages, and even with their best efforts many dogs were injured and some even died.  The next morning police officers finally allowed the volunteers to take the cages down from the trucks as their situation was worsening.

The loving volunteers worked hard to keep all dogs fed and as healthy as possible, as well as providing shade and protecting them from the hot sun.

There were many breeds of dogs that were kidnapped including Husky and Samoyed, with many wearing leads and wearing clothes, clear indications that these dogs were stolen from their families by these evil people. Many dogs were very weak and sick from the terrible ordeal.

The driver of the truck had no legal paper work with him, and the dogs were supposed to be released by the Animal Quarantine Office. However, the local AQ officer had phoned the AQ office in Xichang, Sichuan Province, where the truck had originally come from, and declared the certificate that they had over there legal. This caused the officers to allow any healthy dogs to go back to the driver.

It is ridiculous that such a thing was allowed based on no evidence that there is even a real certificate. Even with a legal certificate the poor dogs should never be allowed to go back to the dog napper.  By this time it was getting dark, and the police forced volunteers out of the police station. The poor dogs were caged again and reloaded up to the truck to prepare to go.

13 year old famous Child Star Zhao Dan and her brother with their Dad were there after school for rescue dogs. In her weibo, she was asking all her friend of the directors, the movie stars and her friend to help to save dogs. She is real hope of China!

To stop this injustice from happening the volunteers refused to leave and waited outside the front gate of the police station and sent out a message for more people to come via Weibo. Dog lovers from inside and outside of China called the local government and the police station repeatedly to protest their decision.

Volunteers had their cars block the front gate of the police station in order to stop the truck and dogs leaving, and many volunteers and dog lovers arrived to block the front gate and tell them to release the dogs.

It is wonderful to see so many loving people go to such efforts to rescue these dogs!

Finally a sum of 60000 RMB (around $10000 USD) was paid by a loving person who does not wish to be named, and the dogs were finally released to a local animal rescue group. This happened on the midnight of April the 20th, and the tired volunteers were happy to see the dogs finally being freed from their cages.

On the morning of April the 21st more volunteers and local vets came to treat injured dogs and ensure their safety. Many citizens in Kunming wish to adopt dogs and it was great to already see some dogs being given a nice home.

The Kunming Yixin Stray Animal Rescue group had around four hundred dogs in their shelter before the 20/04 rescue, and endeavoured to make more space for the rescued dogs to stay in.

Hopefully with support from more loving people from China as well as elsewhere in the world, the rescued dogs will recover soon and be returned to be family members again.

Though it is unfortunate that such a large sum of money had to be paid to the evil dog nappers to get the dogs to be released, it is still great to hear these dogs will now be safe and sound. The 4.20 Kunming dog rescue is sure to make the history books of animal protection in China.

Only 10% of the pet dogs live to their full life in S. Korea. Remaining 90% are either abandoned or sold to the dog meat traders or to “Gae Soju” (means “Dog Elixir”) places.
Shocking and shameful statistics!
Another lie of the dog meat industry that they only slaughter dogs that are raised in farms as meat. As this TV program exposes all dogs are eaten in S. Korea. Meat dogs, pet dogs, old dogs, sick dogs, puppies,… As we all know dogs are dogs. Just because they are raised as meat doesn’t mean that they are less intelligent or they will suffer less.

As long as the S. Korean government allows this barbaric and cruel practice, the high rate of abandonment of pet dogs will continue and the gruesome dog meat industry will thrive.

You can make a difference. Please sign the petitions below and tell the S. Korean government that we are outraged about this horrific injustice to the man’s best friends and we demand that they ban this practice once and for all.

Saved from the dinner table: Activists rescue more than 500 caged dogs destined for restaurants in China

Comments Off on Saved from the dinner table: Activists rescue more than 500 caged dogs destined for restaurants in China

Barbaric: The dogs were discovered crammed into tiny cages on the back of a truck in Kunming, China

This is April 2012

“What’s happened since 2010??? NOTHING!!”

Crammed into tiny cages and enduring appalling conditions, these dogs had been destined for restaurant tables in China.

But they were saved from that fate after activists intercepted the truck carrying them.

Many of the 505 creatures had barely survived their terrible ordeal, having endured cramped conditions and a lack of water during their near 1,000 mile journey by road.

Cruel: Many of the animals, thought to be destined for a restaurant, were suffering from dehydration when they were saved

But rescue came too late for 11 dogs which had succumbed to dehydration and exposure.
The driver, who was questioned by police, said he had been employed to take the animals from Mianning county, Xichang city in the southwest of Sichuan province,to restaurants in Yulin city in south China’s Guangxiprovince.

Cruel: Many of the animals, thought to be destined for a restaurant, were suffering from dehydration when they were saved.

Suffering: Activists arrived too late to save around 11 of the dogs which had already died under the terrible conditions

Volunteers provided the dogs with water and food which they had been deprived of because of the narrow space in the truck. The trade and transportation of animals in China has come in for criticism by campaigners in the West.

Some of the huge markets which sell dogs and cats to restaurants for slaughter and human consumption, came under international spot light several years ago after being the suspected origin of the deadly SARS virus.

Rescue: The activists stopped a truck carrying 505 dogs on Puji road on Thursday evening.

It is not uncommon for dogs, as well as other animals, to be crammed so tightly together into tiny metal cages they cannot even bark – an environment ripe for the spread of disease.

Business: The dogs in this case had a fortunate escape but the trade in dog meat means many more animals are not as lucky

In one of the large markets, on a 60 acre site in Guangzhou, China, cages of dogs and cats – some of them bred as domestic pets – are piled high and when an animal is chosen for sale it is bludgeoned with an iron bar until it is close to death before, being handed over to the purchaser.

Sickening: Many of the animals showed signs of the appalling conditions in which there were transported - including dehydration and other injuries

Fate: The driver of the truck told police he employed to transport dogs to a restaurant in Yulin city in south China’s Guangxi province

11 COUNTRIES WHICH STILL EAT DOG MEAT

Eleven countries around the globe still eat dog meat. They are: China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Polynesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Arctic and Antarctic and two cantons in Switzerland.

China: Although the Chinese were the first to domesticate the dog and keep them as pets, dog meat has been a source of food from at least the time of Confucius, and possibly even before.

Indonesia: Eating dog meat is usually associated with people from the Batak Toba culture, who cook a traditional dish named saksang that is like a dog-meat stew.

Mexico: Dogs were historically bred for their meat by the Aztecs. These dogs were called itzcuintlis, and were often pictured on pre-Columbian Mexican pottery.

Philippines: In the capital city of Manila, the law specifically prohibits the killing and selling of dogs for food except in certain circumstances including research and animal population control.

Polynesia: Dogs were historically eaten in Tahiti and other islands of Polynesia at the time of first European contact in 1769.

Taiwan: Dog meat in Taiwan is particularly eaten in the winter months, especially black dogs, which are believed to help retain body warmth.

Korea: Gaegogi literally means ‘dog meat’ in Korean. Gaegogi, however, is often mistaken as the term for Korean soup made from dog meat, bosintang. The distaste felt by dog lovers, particularly from the West, has made this dish very controversial.

Switzerland: According to a Swiss newspaper report in 1996, the Swiss rural cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen are known to have had a tradition of eating dogs, curing dog meat into jerky and sausages, as well as using the lard for medicinal purposes.

Vietnam: Dog meat is eaten throughout Vietnam. To many Northerners, it is a popular, if relatively expensive, dinnertime restaurant meal.

Arctic and Antarctic: Dogs have historically been an emergency food source for various peoples in Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. Sled dogs are usually maintained for pulling sleds, but occasionally are eaten when no other food is available.

This video was taken January 2012 – When another truck was intercepted by animal lovers.

Starving, exhausted and crammed into tiny cages, they were just hours away from being killed for restaurants.

Animal welfare volunteers and police in Chongqing, south-west China, discovered the malnourished and dehydrated animals loaded inside cages so small they couldn’t stand up.

They took them to a nearby farm where they were given food, water and emergency medical treatment, but many were too frail to survive.

After spotting the truck carrying the animals, he posted a plea on the web, begging for help in saving the dogs’ lives.

It was answered by animal welfare volunteers, and with the assistance of the police, they intercepted the vehicle at a toll gate. Many of the dogs, which were being taken to Guangdong province, in the far south of the country, were saved.

Eating dog meat in China dates back thousands of years. It is  also consumed in countries including Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, but is illegal in most Western countries.

Restaurants serving dog  are common in many Chinese cities, but particularly in Guangdong province, where some locals think it has medicinal properties.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Despite proposals to ban the consumption of dog last year, and growing international opposition to the practice, the meat has continued to be sold.

Alan Knight, chief executive of International Animal Rescue, said: ‘The transport is disgusting. They cram them into small wire cages, with no food or water, and take them across the country and kill them in inhumane ways.

‘This is happening every day. The whole concept of ethics is different to ours and it will be difficult to change, but local animal welfare groups are starting to make headway.’

Cat and dog meat could soon be off the menu in China as first animal abuse law edges closer

Comments Off on Cat and dog meat could soon be off the menu in China as first animal abuse law edges closer

“This was January 2010”

“What happened to the supposed new law’s??  I have been signing petitions since 2007, obviously they didn’t help then, & they haven’t helped to date; This is horrific & needs to be stopped!”

Dog and cat meat could soon be banned from restaurants in China, ending thousands of years of tradition, following protests from animal rights campaigners.

The Chinese government is now on the verge of introducing its first law against animal abuse and permanently removing both animals from the menu.

The first draft of the law, aiming to protect animals from being hurt and killed in a cruel manner, will be raised for legislation in April.

In particular, the draft suggests people caught eating dog or cat meat be jailed for up to 15 days and fined 5,000 yuan (£450), while businesses would be fined between 100,000 to 500,000 yuan (£9,000 to £45,000).

Pet lovers’ associations have sprung up in Chinese cities over recent years, with one liberation group last year ramming a truck full of caged cats to rescue them from being shipped to southern restaurants.

While many Chinese enjoy rich dog meat, especially during cold winters, some object to the practice in some regions of beating dogs to death to release the blood into the meat.

The China National Native Produce & Animal By-Products Import and Export Corporation backed the initiative, which it believes will improve overseas perceptions of Chinese exports.

Others insisted a ban on dog and cat meat was unrealistic.

‘Banning such custom by law is inappropriate and unable to work,’ said Xu Huiqiang, chief of wild animal protection in Jiangsu province, where a dog meat recipe has been listed as a piece of cultural heritage.

An official of Leping, a city that has a traditional catering industry based on dog meat, said that the local economy and people’s lives would be terribly hurt by such a law.

‘Cooking them alive must be punished but which meat to eat should be people’s own choice,’ said a commentary on Xinhua Daily in Nanjing. ‘Some people in China still can’t afford meat. We should not blindly copy Western values.’

But one online protester named ‘Yuxiang999’ posted on Xinhuanet.com: ‘Eating cats and dogs is a shameless barbarian thing. Anyone with humanity would not kill these loyal friends of ours.’

Bangkok, Jan 12 (IANS) Thai navy officials Thursday rescued over 800 dogs when they were about to be smuggled via the Mekong river to neighbouring Laos.

A Mekong river patrol unit headed by Captain Thirakiart Thong-aram found the dogs in 40 cases on a truck on the river bank in Ban Paeng district of Nakhon Panom province, Xinhua reported citing The Nation online.

The Mekong flows through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

A 37-year-old local villager has been arrested.

The dogs were to be transported to Laos to be sent further to Vietnam. About 100 empty cages were also found on the spot, which indicated that over 2,000 dogs might have already been smuggled to Vietnam, officials said.
