Horses Hooves Not Trimmed For 15 years – Grow to 3 Feet Long

“OMG…can you believe the picture below?? I’ve only seen hooves like that once before; on a dead horse!! How can the owner have let them get into such a state they could barely move? It’s not like their so skinny they haven’t been fed, ok not a lot of food, but somebody had to have been giving them something; they couldn’t have lived to their ages without any food or water!! I just can’t understand how anyone, even someone with no knowledge of horses at all, is that dumb, to think it’s ok to just leave them! The poor horses must have been agony, any horsey person knows to keep a horse fit & pain free, a farrier is God; horses hooves need trimming between 6-8 weeks it varies; even if they don’t have shoes on, they still need to be trimmed!!

“I just pray whoever owns these horses, get what they deserve; in this instance prison without probation, along with having to pay in full, all vet & farrier bills. It’s going to take a lot of work from a very good farrier to get their hooves back into shape….but even if they do, the horses may be unfit to ride; due to irreversible damage to the structure of their hooves. I’m just in shock & have nothing but utter disgust at the owner’s blatant abuse & disregard for the health & welfare of these poor innocent horses!! R.I.P little one. ‘Critical condition’

The emaciated animals were discovered standing knee-deep in muck and with hooves more than three feet long. 

A miniature mare had to be euthanised at the scene due, because ruptured ligaments had caused the fetlocks to dislocate. The two others – one a full-sized stallion and one a miniature stallion ­– were in a ‘critical condition’.

“It’s the worst we’ve seen in our 26-year history,” Caroline Robertson, the development director of Days End Farm Horse Rescue told Caroll County Times. “They could barely move without being at risk of getting tangled in their own hooves.”

Three neglected horses have been found, with feet so overgrown it is believed they were locked up for at least 15 years.

Hooves removed

Before the horses could be removed from the scene, they had to be sedated so they could lie down and have the excess hoof removed. They were then taken to Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) in Maryland, (http://www.defhr.org/)USA for rehabilitation.

The horses were discovered when a member of the public called the Humane Society of Washington County with concerns about pet pigeons kept there. It was during the welfare inspection that the equines were found.

‘Long road’

Both horses have been aged at around 18. The horse has been called Quest, while the surviving pony has been named Rio. Both have received further treatment from a farrier and vet and are now on the “long road” to rehabilitation.

An investigation into the case is on-going and cruelty charges could be brought.“Never mind could be…they definitely should be!!”

A complaint made in July to the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control about a dog tied up out in the rain led to the arrest of Yolanda Williams of West Palm Beach on September 25, 2014, according to the Sun Sentinel. The six year old pit bull, Diamond, was found emaciated, tied up in the backyard.

Williams, 43, claims she never hurt her dog and that Diamond was just sick. According to officials, Williams moved to the area last year and Diamond proceeded to get sick, but she was not able to afford a veterinary visit. She claims to have tried to get the dog healthy but the dog just kept losing weight.

Authorities reported that Diamond’s bones were visible through her skin and the dog was constantly left outside without shelter. Diamond was removed from the property and placed in the care of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. According to a representative of Friends of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, Diamond recovered and has since been adopted out.

Though Williams said she misses Diamond and cries whenever she goes in the backyard, she stated she would just get another dog after officials took Diamond. Thankfully, she never did.” She may not have then, but how do you know she won’t get another dog, unless you visit every week??”

Williams has been charged with animal cruelty but insists she is a good person who should not be charged. Authorities reported Williams appeared to have no remorse over her sick and emaciated dog. She was released on bond.

Although she was found extremely emaciated, outside, in a deplorable state of neglect, Molly is making a good recovery in the loving care of a foster home.

A gentle soul, Molly is still thin but eating well and gaining weight in her warm, new home, where her personality shines brighter each day.

The BC SPCA cruelty investigations team has forwarded recommended charges to Crown Counsel.

Horrifically emaciated dog, found near death, now safe in SPCA care.

An 18-month-old Shepherd-cross dog named Molly is alive against all odds after being rescued in one of the most horrific cruelty cases ever witnessed by the BC SPCA.

The RCMP in Port Hardy was called out on Nov. 25 in response to a complaint of animal cruelty. They discovered the extremely emaciated dog outside on her owner’s porch. “She was in critical condition, non-responsive and shivering, with a collar deeply embedded in her neck,” says Marcie Moriarty, the BC SPCA’s chief prevention and enforcement officer. “The constable immediately rushed Molly to a nearby veterinary hospital, where staff provided emergency treatment to keep her alive and removed the embedded collar from her neck.”

Embedded Collar

Once stabilized, she was transported to Nanaimo where the case was turned over to the BC SPCA for ongoing investigation. After receiving additional life-saving medical treatment, Molly has been placed in the care of an SPCA foster home as she recovers.

“She has gained some weight and is now able to walk, but she is still extremely emaciated,” says Moriarty. “She is getting care around the clock and we are very hopeful that, despite the incredible odds against her, she will make a full recovery.”

Moriarty says it is impossible to comprehend how anyone could allow a dog to slowly, and excruciatingly, starve to death. “We rescue thousands of animals from heartbreaking situations every year at the SPCA, but cases like this are particularly shocking,” she says.

“The fact that Molly has survived is a true miracle and we are so grateful to the RCMP, the veterinary staff in Port Hardy and Nanaimo and all those who have played a role in her rescue and recovery.”

Recovering Well

Molly has a long recovery process ahead and is expected to stay in foster care for several weeks before being placed in a new home.

The BC SPCA is continuing its investigation and will be recommending charges of animal cruelty against Molly’s former owners.

“How the hell could she let the mare get so bad & not ask for help or advice as to why the horse wasn’t gaining weight? Any real horse owner knows’ that teeth need to be filed down at least once a year! I get my horse done twice as it doesn’t take long for a tooth to start irritating the gum due to being sharp or hooks to cause pain, which will stop the horse eating properly. How come it took until it was on it’s last legs before someone noticed it? Was it locked away where nobody could see it? I just can’t fathom why nobody spoke up earlier, perhaps then the mare may have stood a chance! Sod falling out with neighbours; when an animals life is in danger, you speak up!! Didn’t the previous owner see it’s condition going down? So many questions because this just shouldn’t happen in this day & age!”

Floral City, Florida – “I cried her name, I said, ‘Mary, Mary — how could they do this to you?'” says a sobbing Cheryl Pence. 

She’s talking about Mary, an Arabian mare she used to own. She saw Mary again Thursday afternoon, right before she died.

When animal control officers arrived at the horse‘s current home near Floral City, Mary was down on the ground, too weak to stand — simply a breathing carcass.

“Deplorable, emaciated, there’s really not a term for it — it’s beyond emaciation,” says Animal Control Officer Terry Funderburk of the horse’s condition.

The horse’s owner, Tammi Kampman, was arrested and faces an animal cruelty charge. A vet says the mare’s teeth were so uncared for, that she could not physically eat.

“It had no way to process the food put in front of it,” explains Animal Control Supervisor Lora Peckham. “It literally starved to death, because of a lack of medical care.”

The arrest report indicates that over the past year people in this rural neighbourhood, including other horse owners, had offered to help the family. And Pence, who had given the family Mary four years ago so their girls could ride, begged to get Mary back.

“I said, ‘but if you can’t take care of her, I can take her back. I’m happy to take her back; I love this horse,'” Pence says.

But according to Citrus County Animal Control, no one called them to report the neglected horse. Some residents told investigators they didn’t want to cause hard feelings in the neighbourhood and Pence thought someone else had picked up the phone. “In situations like this I would rather fall out with a whole bloody City; than not report a suffering animal!”

When 10 News knocked on the mobile home’s door today, we were told to go away, so we don’t know why this horse was allowed to suffer for so long. However, we did see several cars at the house and a bass boat out back.

“She took no action to get a vet on property,” said Peckham.

Yet, because there isn’t an indication of “intentional abuse”, Peckham explained that state law allows only a misdemeanor charge. Kampman bonded out of jail on Thursday. “Perhaps not intentional abuse but the owner isn’t blind, she saw the state of the horse & didn’t get a vet out….I call that intentional negligence, which should be accountable for as it is clearly animal abuse to leave a horse in that condition!” 

Mary was so far gone she had to be euthanized and her former owner is now left with photographs of better days and a gnawing guilt.

Appalling, horse starved to death

“She’s in horse heaven and she’s not suffering,” says Pence. “But I will never do that again. I will never give away a horse again.”

Animal Control Officers say it’s important for people to officially report animal abuse or neglect. And if owners find themselves in a situation where they don’t have the money, time, or will to properly care for animal, officials urge owners to ask county agencies or area rescue groups for help.

Bridgeton Dog Owner Enters Not guilty Plea In Animal Cruelty Case

BRIDGETON — The fire-fighter cited by authorities for animal cruelty for letting his dog become emaciated with sores all over his body while tied in the backyard has pleaded not guilty to the charges in court.

Alexander Centeno, of East Commerce Street, appeared in Bridgeton Municipal Court on Thursday and told the judge he would release the Great Dane if the charges were dropped.

“You know what I said to that!” responded Cumberland County SPCA Executive Director Bev Greco.  “No way.”

A trial date of Dec. 13, at 2 p.m., has been set.

Acting on a tip from the Bridgeton animal control officer, on Nov. 20, Cumberland County SPCA cruelty agents seized the emaciated Great Dane from a property at 568 E. Commerce St.

Centeno, was charged with failure to maintain proper sustenance, which included failure to provide proper veterinary care. The dog, believed to be 4 years old, has a history with the SPCA.

“We were called out about this same dog eight months ago,” said SPCA cruelty agent Diane Luellan-Lilla at the time. “The owner was cited for violations, but complied and the case was closed.

The dog is recovering. Since Nov. 20, Centeno is being charged $10 a day room and board for the dog plus a veterinarian’s examination and medication expenses.

Those charges added up to $190 when Luellan-Lilla first contacted Centeno by phone the day after the seizure.

She told Centeno the monetary charges would cease as soon as he came to the shelter and signed papers to release the dog. He declined and announced he was retaining a lawyer.

Centeno was not home the day of the seizure and no one answered the door, but other dogs were inside.

They are believed to be owned by Centeno’s wife. At least $90 in additional charges have accrued.

Horse cruelty inquiry in Herefordshire prompts arrest

 

Eighteen malnourished horses and ponies have been found in sheds in Herefordshire with no food or water, prompting the arrest of a man.

Two of the animals have since died after West Mercia Police recovered them from two sites in the county.

The horses are being kept at the rest home while tests for viruses and diseases are carried out

Bransby Home of Rest for Horses, in Stoke Prior, near Leominster, is caring for the surviving 16.

The horses and ponies were found malnourished and eating their own waste and soil from the floor of the sheds.

Bransby manager Philip York said: “It’s one of the worst cases of cruelty I’ve seen and it’s very sad that we lost two.”

The arrested man has since been released on bail.

Mr York said: “For animals to become that emaciated I believe they would have been deprived of food over a prolonged period of time.

“There were water butts with not a drop of water in them.

“But animals have strong survival instincts and if they can smell water or moisture below their bedding they start digging down to find it.”

The animals are being kept in quarantine at the centre while veterinary test are carried out.

Mr York said: “Two of the animals were just too far emaciated but I’m confident that the rest will make it.”

“They’ve got very good chances with plenty to eat and proper veterinary care and attention.”

He added the rest home had taken more than 100 animals into care to date this year – which Mr York described as an “unprecedented” number.

Starving puppy fights for life at local vet – Video

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) –

A three month old Boxer puppy is now being nursed back to health at a local vet clinic after falling victim to animal cruelty.

It started over the weekend. A good Samaritan heard his whimper and responded to the call. The emaciated Boxer puppy, now named Rocky Balboa, continues to fight for his life at Southside Animal Clinic in Lake Charles.

“He was almost dead whenever the good Samaritan that found him brought him in,” said veterinarian Dr. Matt Traylor.

Just two days later, Rocky is doing much better. But on Monday his future didn’t look bright.

“Poor little Rocky was found, he’s been grossly neglected,” said 4 Paws Society President Wanda Williams. “He was out in this heat, suffering terribly. He had been starved.”

In fact Dr. Traylor said it’s been a long time since rocky ate a meal.

“He’s about approximately three months old, probably for the last several weeks to a month to get in that condition,” said Dr. Traylor.

Rocky is also plagued with intestinal parasites and a skin infection. But Dr. Traylor says his emaciation captured the most attention.

“Whenever we look and assess dogs, as far as are they too skinny or too heavy, there’s a nice little chart,” said Dr. Traylor. “It’s on a scale of one to nine. Five is ideal, where you have a lot of muscling over the back but they’re not obese. One is very very thing or emaciated, and nine is the chunky monkey, the big obese dog. He was about a one on the scale to nine when he came in.”

Food is slowly being introduced to Rocky, because too much food at once can cause more problems.

“He’s doing better,” said Dr. Traylor. “He’s eating, but he’s still got a long way to go.”

For now, his prognosis is great. Dr. Traylor says Rocky is a fighter even though he’s not completely out of the woods. But Rocky serves as a face for many other animals neglected or mistreated daily.

“This is one of the things that a lot of people don’t understand, you really need to take care of your animals,” said Dr. Traylor. “This is a pretty classic example of somebody actually neglecting him.”

“Please spay and neuter your pets,” said Williams. “Take good care of them, especially in this heat, please don’t leave your dogs out.”

Police Charge Man For Having Dead Pit Bull In Backyard

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –

A man has been charged with animal cruelty after police found one dead pit bull and one severely emaciated pit bull in his back yard.

Ken Lloyd Jones, 47, was told by police that they would seek an arrest warrant with the State Attorney’s Office at a later date, according to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police went to Jones’ house in the 1700 block of West 2nd Street on April 6 after receiving a complaint by phone about the dead dog.

A police officer and an animal cruelty investigator went to the house and found a brown and white pit bull, which had apparently been dead for a few days, “due to the decomposition and maggot activity on the body,” the report said.

Food or water was not observed anywhere near the deceased dog, which was on a chain, while the emaciated dog had food and water nearby.

Jones was not home when the officer and investigator arrived, but his wife called him and he came back to the house, stating he did not know the brown and white pit bull was dead.

Jones told police he fed the dogs a few days ago and he regularly feeds them maybe twice a week, but had no food on hand at the house. Jones also told police that he had been taking care of his mother, who has Alzheimer’s, and that his wife had recently been shot.

Jones was also charged with animal cruelty in 2003, and with carrying a concealed weapon, driving with a suspended license and running a stop sign in 1989.

2 charged with animal cruelty

SOMERSET — Two Somerset residents face animal cruelty charges after police said two emaciated puppies were found at their home.

One of the Shiloh shepherds later died while being treated by a veterinarian, authorities said.

Borough police said they responded Wednesday to an animal complaint in the 200 block of Fuller Street and found two neglected animals.

Witnesses reported the dogs vomited and had diarrhea, police said.

Authorities said they took both dogs to Animal Medical Center on North Center Avenue, where one died a short time later.

The puppies appeared to be about 4 months old, police said.

The second dog tested positive for parvoviral infection, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea, police said.

Jesse Aaron Shay, 30, and Angela S. Bartels, 32, face charges of cruelty to animals, police said.
