An investigation by ADI into a Korean “attraction” that forces monkeys to perform in degrading shows has revealed shocking conditions behind the scenes.
At the Monkey School, which is located in Gamgyori in South Korea, ADI found:

• Monkeys kept in squalid and barren conditions, including mothers and their young babies
• Traumatized animals exhibiting abnormal behaviour, such as constantly spinning around and biting themselves
• Some monkeys isolated in tiny cages, others crammed together
• Animals hit during training and dragged along the floor
• Disgraceful contempt for a monkey as it tries to escape with its hands tied behind its back, falling onto its face, as workers laugh at its predicament and terror

These disturbing findings highlight a life of extreme neglect and cruelty for these intelligent and sensitive animals – an all too common occurrence for performing animals which ADI has revealed time and again, suffer terribly behind the scenes.

On seeing the footage, Sharon Shaw, Director of Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in the UK said: “All aspects of life for primates at Monkey School are appalling, from the inadequate and atrocious housing conditions, the physical and psychological torture, to the lack of empathy and respect shown by the staff. The poor animals who are unlucky enough to live there endure a barbaric, unnatural life.”

During the public shows, monkeys are made to wear clothes, ride around on a motorbike, do handstands, jump through hoops and respond to commands as directed.

It is shameful that these intelligent, social and emotional primates are terrorized and forced to undertake such degrading tricks – especially in light of modern understanding of primates and their use of tools, language and self-awareness – abilities which, at one time, were considered to be unique to humans. This also sends the worst possible message to children about respect for the other intelligent species that share our planet and how we should treat, and protect, animals.

The terrible suffering of the animals at Monkey School – and establishments like them – must stop.

ADI is working with our campaign partner Korea Animal Rights Advocates (KARA) to encourage the Government and people of Korea to reject the cruel and unnecessary use of animals in entertainment.

We are supporting new legislation, the ‘Zoo Act’, proposed by Congresswoman Chang which, if passed, would ban animal performances and set minimum welfare standards and inspections for places that exhibit captive animals.

Highlighting the need for the legislation, Congresswoman Hanna Chang: “As seen in the ADI footage, it is hard to imagine the pain that monkeys have to go through for humans every day. This clearly shows that it is now time to have regulations to monitor the welfare of animals in captivity in Korea.”

Congresswoman Chang’s proposal has strong support from animal protection organizations. ADI and KARA have joined over 80 national and international groups in sending a joint letter to the Government stating support for the draft law.

It is time to end the exploitation of, and brutality towards, animals used for entertainment.

Man mauled to death by grizzly bears while cleaning enclosure at Montana wildlife park

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A trainer who was mauled to death while cleaning the pen of two, 500-pound brown bears at a Montana wildlife casting agency suffered extensive wounds that make it impossible to determine if he was conscious before the attack, authorities said Monday.

There were no defensive wounds on the hands or arms of 24-year-old Benjamin Cloutier when his body was pulled from the pen on Sunday, and he apparently had not used the bear spray he was carrying, said Demetri Price, head trainer at Animals of Montana near Bozeman.

As a result, Price has speculated that Cloutier might have fallen and hit his head before being killed.

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin confirmed the absence of defensive wounds and the non-use of the spray. But he said there was no way to prove Cloutier was unconscious when the attack began.

“The body had been attacked so fiercely, there were so many injuries that there was no way — that’s why we’re not going to speculate,” Gootkin said.

However, he said it was clear that Cloutier died of bite and claw wounds that hit major arteries.

The death remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and wardens from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. It has been listed as accidental and is not considered a criminal matter.

Animals of Montana provides captive-bred animals for photography shoots and motion pictures, ranging from African lions and minks to badgers and bobcats. The company says the bears have been used in “attack re-enactments” for films in which trainers are used as stuntmen.

Cloutier had worked as a trainer at the company since 2008 and had been in the bear enclosure hundreds of times, Price said.

Price was the first person to arrive at the pen after the mauling. He described Cloutier’s death as a “tragic accident” and insisted it was not an attack. Cloutier did not scream for help, and none of the other animals at the facility showed any signs of alarm before the discovery, Price said.

“I believe, given all things accounted for, that (Cloutier) was somehow rendered unconscious, whether it be he slipped and hit his head or something” else, Price said. “The bears we believed killed him, but we don’t believe it was an attack scenario.”

Price said he was approaching the enclosure when he saw the victim on the ground with two captive-bred, 8-year-old male bears nearby. One of the bears, nicknamed Griz, was behaving as though he had taken possession of the victim, and Price said he had to kill the animal so he could get to Cloutier.

When he did, Cloutier was dead, with wounds inflicted by Griz or the other bear in the enclosure, nicknamed Yosemite.

Cloutier was originally from York Haven, Pa. Price said the staff at Animals of Montana had suffered “a double loss” with the death of Cloutier and the loss of Griz, which he called the favorite animal of the victim.

Cloutier’s family could not be immediately reached for comment.

Animals of Montana had three bears prior to Sunday that were identified on the company’s website as grizzly bears.

However, the facility’s permit for the two involved in the mauling lists them as Syrian brown bears, a subspecies of brown bears that are different from grizzlies, said Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokeswoman Andrea Jones.

The company had the necessary state and federal permits to keep the bears. But its license is being reviewed in the wake of the death, and the company’s permit to exhibit Yosemite has been suspended pending the investigation, Jones said.

Baby Elephants Captured, Tortured into Submission VIDEO

Thailand’s tourist industry is driving a brutal trade in baby elephants. Illegal and brutal cross-border trade in endangered wild Asian elephants continues. On the Thai-Myanmar border at least 50-100 calves and young females are removed from their forest homes every year and are traded illegally every year to supply tourist camps. Countless elephants die in the process threatening the remaining populations of this endangered species.

Capturing elephants from the wild for this trade often involves killing of mothers and other protective family members with automatic weapons. Captured calves are subjected to an extremely brutal breaking-in process where they are tied up, confined, starved, beaten and tortured in order to break their spirits. It is estimated that only one in three survive this inhumane “domestication” process. This original investigative report by The Ecologist Film Unit in association with Earth Focus/Link TV and Elephant Family exposes this practice.

Recent video has captured the dreadful treatment of captured endangered Asian elephants as a result of cross-border capture and trafficking in the animals.  The Ecologist Film Unit in association with Earth Focus/Link TV and Elephant Family shows the inhumane practices involved in capturing the baby pachyderms, often by killing their mothers and others of the herd, and the brutal “breaking in” of baby elephants before they are sold into animal slavery:

This is the despicable way baby’s are treated, beaten, tortured, deprived of food & water…until they stop resisting humans, then they can be trained. Trained to carry tourists, performing in circuses, or begging the streets with their mahouts for money. Is their any wonder some of them go crazy??

Going on an elephant ride is a key part of many vacation’ trips to Thailand and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. Doubtless few realize the cruel treatment involved in capturing and “training” these intelligent creatures. The video claims that for every captured calf, five adult elephants are killed while trying to protect their young.

Supply and Demand Endangers a Species

Though elephant hunting is illegal in Thailand, it is widely practised in neighbouring Burma, and an active smuggling has been documented as poor Burmese capture, break and sell the baby elephants for what is, to them, huge sums of money. With so much money involved in poor countries with corrupt officials, it is hardly surprising and profoundly depressing that  90% of Asian elephants have been lost in the past century.

The NGOs trying to halt the cruel capture and treatment of the elephants call for practical steps to at least regulate the trade in elephants to require earlier registration of captive-born calves and a DNA database to ensure that the few remaining wild Asian elephants stay both wild and protected by international efforts to enforce the law.

Urgent: Ask Danny Boyle to Keep His Olympics Promise to the Animals

When director Danny Boyle first announced plans to have live animals as unwilling participants in the London Olympics opening ceremony, PETA UK immediately fired off a letter asking him to reconsider.

Sadly, our appeals highlighting how terrified the animals would be and our offers to help source state-of-the-art animatronics in place of the live animals were rebuffed.

However, Boyle did pledge that he would “vigorously” look into retiring the animals to sanctuaries afterwards so at least they would be spared the horrors of slaughter. 

It now appears that Boyle is not a man of his word, and it’s unlikely that any of the animals will be spared slaughter because they are, in fact, being hired from “entertainment” companies who exploit animals as if they were living props. These animals face being continuously hired out before being relegated to the chopping block – unless, that is, Boyle steps in and keeps his promise.

Please contact Boyle today and urge him to retire the animals to sanctuaries. Just as he stepped in to provide for the impoverished young stars of Slumdog Millionaire after the film’s huge success, the world is now looking to him to make good on his promise to compensate these animals for their involuntary service.

The Zoochotic Report – Look At What We Are Doing To Animals??

“Not ashamed to say this video made me cry, what are we doing to the poor animals we incarcerate in zoo’s? It’s just not right to make animals live in an un-natural environment with nothing to stimulate them. The same can be said of circuses, the animals suffer for our entertainment, an its wrong! We imprison them, to make money, to poke fun at; what right have we got to do this? I’m sure if I was locked in a cage with nothing to do, I too would go mad!”

“This is 2012, if you want to see a lion, go on a safari to Africa. For those that are kept for conservation reason’s, we must make sure we provide them with everything they would have if still wild. We have the ability to replicate any landscape, the only thing we can’t do is ensure the weather is correct for a certain species, but that’s easy fixed. Don’t have polar bear conservation in the UK, have it only in Countries that have exceptionally cold weather etc.”

RSPCA calls for circus wild animal ban date

Date of ban still not confirmed 

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has demanded that the government confirm a deadline date by which the ban on the use of wild animals in circuses would come into force. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced on 1st March 2012 that a ban would be sought “at the earliest opportunity”, but did not specify a date at the time.

Commenting, the RSPCA’s Chief Executive Gavin Grant said “The question which needs to be asked is: does the government intend to stay true to its word? We have been studying the details of the plans and find them vague and littered with contradictions. Nothing short of a proper ban will safeguard the welfare of these majestic animals. Everyone who cares about these animals agrees. So let’s get on with it.”


At the time of the original announcement, DEFRA also announced the introduction of a licensing scheme to ensure that wild animals in circuses are kept to certain welfare standards until such time as a full ban can be brought into force.

Details of a consultation period to allow the general public to offer their input on the licensing scheme may be found here, and the consultation period will close on April 25th 2012.

ADI has decided that Defra’s so-called public consultation on regulations on animals in circuses is manipulative in the extreme and designed to give the Government the answer they want, with no choice of options. Defra did not like the answer they got on their genuine consultation (finalised in 2010) where nearly 95% of the public voted for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses. They have now put together a set of questions that ensures they get the answer they want, which is to regulate rather than end the suffering of these animals.

The animal circus business has been shown, repeatedly, to tolerate violence towards animals and the conditions that the animals are forced to endure would not be tolerated in the worst zoo. We cannot endorse measures which we do not believe will protect animals. It is a national disgrace, when other countries are taking decisive action on this issue. We urge our supporters to boycott this farce of a consultation.

Animal Defenders International (ADI), Four Paws, Animal Aid, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), and the BVA (British Veterinary Association) want to see a clear ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.

Jan Creamer: “We were promised a ban in 2006. This was followed by consultations, expert examinations, working parties, impact assessments and feasibility studies. The last public consultation gave an overwhelming 95% of public in favour of a ban. Yet Defra wants another consultation. Are they going to keep going until they get the answer they want?”

Before the last election there was a Government commitment for a ban, which evaporated after the General Election. Today, the Coalition Government claimed there would be legislation tabled by 2015, by which time there will either be a new Government or we will be in the throws of the election. And this Government will be directly responsible for all of the animal suffering that they have chosen not to end.

Born Free comments on the reality behind the drama

The film “We Bought a Zoo” is the Hollywood adaptation of the account of Benjamin Mee’s purchase of the former Dartmoor Wildlife Park. As the release of the film looms, media reports appear to characterise the purchase of the zoo by the Mees as a “rescue”: “Unless a buyer was found, most of the animals would have been shot” (Daily Mail, 17 Dec 2011).

In reality, the Born Free Foundation and others were in regular contact with the relevant authorities at the time, pushing for the closure of the zoo and working on putting together a rehoming package for the animals. To the best of our knowledge, at no time were the animals at risk of being “shot” – rather, they faced a future at other, perhaps better-equipped facilities. Sadly, we can only assume that financial interests, a desire to maintain a local tourist attraction and/or pressure from within the zoo industry conspired to see the zoo sold to a self-confessed novice, with the subsequent widely-reported animal escapes and financial problems.

The film is set and filmed in Southern California, and will undoubtedly feature many captive and performing wild animals. Born Freeis very concerned about the message using animals in this way sends, and for the long-term welfare of the animals used. US performing animal regulations and standards do little to guarantee the welfare of the animals concerned and guard against welfare problems associated with raising, keeping and exploiting wild animals for entertainment.
