Molly, a Shepherd cross found near death, is happy and recovering in a foster home after being rescued from a horrifying cruelty situation near Port Hardy.

Although she was found extremely emaciated, outside, in a deplorable state of neglect, Molly is making a good recovery in the loving care of a foster home.

A gentle soul, Molly is still thin but eating well and gaining weight in her warm, new home, where her personality shines brighter each day.

The BC SPCA cruelty investigations team has forwarded recommended charges to Crown Counsel.

Horrifically emaciated dog, found near death, now safe in SPCA care.

An 18-month-old Shepherd-cross dog named Molly is alive against all odds after being rescued in one of the most horrific cruelty cases ever witnessed by the BC SPCA.

The RCMP in Port Hardy was called out on Nov. 25 in response to a complaint of animal cruelty. They discovered the extremely emaciated dog outside on her owner’s porch. “She was in critical condition, non-responsive and shivering, with a collar deeply embedded in her neck,” says Marcie Moriarty, the BC SPCA’s chief prevention and enforcement officer. “The constable immediately rushed Molly to a nearby veterinary hospital, where staff provided emergency treatment to keep her alive and removed the embedded collar from her neck.”

Once stabilized, she was transported to Nanaimo where the case was turned over to the BC SPCA for ongoing investigation. After receiving additional life-saving medical treatment, Molly has been placed in the care of an SPCA foster home as she recovers.

“She has gained some weight and is now able to walk, but she is still extremely emaciated,” says Moriarty. “She is getting care around the clock and we are very hopeful that, despite the incredible odds against her, she will make a full recovery.”

Moriarty says it is impossible to comprehend how anyone could allow a dog to slowly, and excruciatingly, starve to death. “We rescue thousands of animals from heartbreaking situations every year at the SPCA, but cases like this are particularly shocking,” she says.

“The fact that Molly has survived is a true miracle and we are so grateful to the RCMP, the veterinary staff in Port Hardy and Nanaimo and all those who have played a role in her rescue and recovery.”

Recovering Well

Molly has a long recovery process ahead and is expected to stay in foster care for several weeks before being placed in a new home.

The BC SPCA is continuing its investigation and will be recommending charges of animal cruelty against Molly’s former owners.

A live Dog; Dropped Off At Animal Shelter Wrapped In Sealed Plastic Bags (Photos)

“WTF…Yes you read the title right! Why in hells name would you take the time to drop a dog off at a pound, but first try to suffocate it with plastic bags??presumably so that it would be dead;by the time the box was opened???? I am literally gobsmacked & sickened by this despicable cold-hearted, callous, cruel & cowardly act!! Did the bxxxxxds think if they dropped it off, they would get away with it;by saying that’s how they found the dog?? wouldn’t surprise me!!  They are sick in the head & danger to other animals, anyone who can place a plastic bag over the head of a living  breathing being; is a danger to society in general, they are psycho’s.”

“They MUST be forced to suffer the consequences of their actions! Nothing less than a long jail sentence, a fine, & banned from ever owning animals for life!! I wish they could experience how it feels to be forced to go without oxygen, food, water & be covered in sores & ulcers; for the same amount of time poor Champ suffered!!”

It’s beyond belief realizing that a pair of cowardly culprits dropped off their malnourished, severely neglected dog at the Los Angeles West Valley Animal Shelter a few days ago wrapped in a sealed plastic bag and left him on the clerk’s counter before just walking off.

 Thinking the package was a routine delivery, the clerk was shocked when she opened it and discovered a blue, blooded dog who wasn’t moving. One plastic bag was sealed over the dog’s head, and another plastic bag was tied around his neck.

The clerk immediately rushed the dog to the clinic where the veterinarian staff was able to revive the defenseless little guy who was severely matted and hardly able to move

His body was covered with open wounds and ulcers as the staff shaved him down. The tiny starved dog weighed only seven pounds; he should have weighed twice that amount. He has been named Chamsky, but more informally he is now called Champ.

S.A.F.E. Animal Rescue is caring for Champ who has now been placed in foster care after his initial veterinarian evaluation. Malnutrition and having been deprived of oxygen play a major part in his medical issues, but Champ is getting medicated baths, and several medications for his skin ulcers and infections.

The shelter staff were able to catch the animal abusers in the parking lot of West Valley Animal Shelter, and they are being charged with animal cruelty. Champ will be evidence of their abuse in court one day.

UK Foster Homes needed for Bosnian Dogs

As most of you know, we have a rehoming transport from Bosnia to the UK, set for June. There are still 12 rescued dogs who haven’t had anyone ask about them, or offer them home. This special newsletter focuses on just two of these dogs, Coko and Betty, so you can get to know them a little more.

Possibly your current lifestyle doesn’t permit you adopting a dog, but you’d still like to help? Have you considered fostering? This would offer a dog a safe and caring home environment (far superior to that of a Bosnian pension/kennel) as well as providing your new canine friend with house-training, human/animal contact and getting him or her used to a new domestic environment. BETTY – The ‘ideal’ dog!

Young Betty was rescued as a puppy with her sisters in Sarajevo. The 10-month-old has lived in a pension (kennels) ever since.

She’s a medium sized collie-mix and is a beautiful black and golden colour.

Along with her sisters she caught canine parvovirus, sadly only Betty and her sister Lady survived.

Betty also had a mild case of the skin condition demodex, but is now fully recovered. She’s a gentle and lively dog. The ‘ideal’ dog as she’s been described!

As she’s spent all her life in a pension, it may take her a little time to adjust to the comforts of a real home.

However she already walks well on the leash, loves people and loves to play.

COKO – In need of special loving care.

As a puppy, Coko was thrown into a rubbish bin along with his siblings.

Sadly a canine parvovirus outbreak took the lives of many of the dogs in the pension, but Coko survived.

Because of his lowered immune system he’s now developed the skin condition demodex. We are trying to make sure he gets the best veterinary treatment for the disease, and he’s showing some improvement, but it has become clear to us that the only way he will fully recover is if we find him a home where he would get special loving care in addition to medical treatment.

The neurological causes behind demodex can only be helped with a stress-free, calm and loving environment. Such dogs need stability, familiar people and a suitable environment to live in, without this there is the possibility that the condition could re-occur. Demodex is not contagious.

Coko is a lovely mix-breed, chocolate brown in colour and about a year old. He loves to cuddle and play but is very timid and shy.

He’s spent all his life in pension, so he’ll need time and a very caring home to help him gain his confidence.

Victim Of Animal Cruelty Ready For A New Loving Home

FORT WAYNE – The tiny black dog with giant brown eyes and crazy hair bounds across the room, a flurry of wagging tail, busy nose and a heart three times the size of his body.

Michelle Davies | The Journal Gazette Sawyer, an 18-month-old mixed-breed dog and suspected victim of animal cruelty, is now healed and ready to be adopted.

What a difference a few months makes.

On Jan. 5, the terrier mix, now called Sawyer, was found by a passer-by in the 700 block of 3rd Street suffering from two broken front legs.

The “good Samaritan” who found the tiny dog with black hair and gray Einstein eyebrows took him to the Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency Speciality Hospital in Fort Wayne, where veterinarians found that the dog’s injuries were not like those that would have been caused by getting hit by a car. Officials at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control opened a cruelty investigation.

In the meantime, there was a scruffy little dog to help and the shelter’s Angel Fund was nearly depleted after paying for the puppy’s surgery.

“So many people donated for his care,” said Peggy Bender, community relations and education specialist at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control. “Without it, he wouldn’t be where he is today. You can’t use tax dollars for this type of situation.”

Officials said about $4,500 was raised in a week.

Friday, officials announced that Sawyer was ready for adoption, and he showed off the healing power of love. He’s spent about 10 weeks in a private foster home.

Shelter officials said that despite his ordeal, Sawyer has been nothing but boundless energy and love. Officials estimate he’s about 18 months old.

“Even with both legs in full casts, he would try to hug you,” said AmyJo Sites, Animal Care & Control deputy director. “The injury didn’t slow him down one minute.”

Bender said she worried at first because Sawyer would bounce up and down on his casts until veterinarians assured her the bones had been repaired with plates and pins and the bouncing didn’t hurt him.

The woman who fostered Sawyer since his surgery – officials asked that her name not be used so she can continue fostering high-profile cases when needed – said it will be very difficult to let him go to his “forever home.”

“He is awesome. He’s an amazing dog,” she said. “He never knew he had broken legs.”

Bender said that while high-profile cases such as Sawyer’s get a lot of attention, it also helps remind people there are many, many other animals that need homes and that when they see cruelty or neglect, they need to report it at 427-1244.

“If you see something, pick up the phone,” Bender said. “We do keep it confidential. Just let us know so we can check it out.”

The cruelty case involving Sawyer remains under investigation.

Rescue Organisation Helps Save Three Day Old Puppies Who Were Being Sold On-Line

When Panda Paws Rescue was informed about a Craigslist ad selling three-day-old pit bull puppies they didn’t hesitate to act. 

Panda Paws Rescue founder Amanda Giese obtained as much information as she could and then contacted authorities in Fontana, California who came to the aid of the puppies and her mother.

A 24-year-old woman posted an ad offering for sale 3-day-old pit bull puppies.

When Panda Paws found out about it they were horrified. Although located in a different state, the rescue didn’t hesitate to help. Knowing the puppies lives were at risk Giese worked to obtain proof of what was happening. As soon as she had confirmation that the ad was real, she contacted the Fontana Police Department for help.

Officer Jamie Simmons with the Fontana Police Department went into immediate action. Officer Simmons removed six puppies and their mother from the woman’s custody by Tuesday night. Officer Simmons placed the puppies and mother in medical care with a local veterinary clinic.

A seventh puppy was sold on Monday, and its location is unknown.

The puppies and mother are currently in foster care once they are able to be safely transported they will be taken to Panda Paws Rescue in Vancouver, Washington. Wings of Rescue will be helping to fly the dogs to Washington. The puppies will be available for adoption once they are over 8 weeks old, vaccinated, microchipped and altered.

The woman who was selling the puppies is facing numerous charges. The investigation is ongoing and more details about the rescue are not yet released.

Kentucky Authorities Seek Help To Identify Woman Who Threw Chihuahua In River

“WTF…my…how I would like to have words with the bitch that left that poor baby; what if nobody had seen her leave the box, the poor little pup would have surely died. I guess this makes me so flaming mad because I have a chihuahua, who is my best friend, where ever I go, he’s there with me; he’s the only one, out of my dogs that my horse actually likes! No animal deserves an end like this could have been. So if anybody knows who did this, please contact the number below; if an animal is ill, there are way’s & means to deal with it, you don’t just leave it in a bloody box to die a slow painful death. I hope this bitch has nightmares every night about leaving that baby…I hope karma really fxxxs with her head!!”

It was on Tuesday that a blond haired woman between 5’2″ and 5’6″ got out of a late model silver Chevy SUV carrying a small box and walked to the side of the Frankfort Sewer Department on Kentucky Ave. towards the river.

A short time later, the woman returned to her car without the box and left.

According to wkyt.com, witnesses immediately went over to the area and picked up the box. In it was a tiny female chihuahua puppy no more than five weeks old.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the woman. The woman faces second degree animal cruelty charges if found guilty.

Meanwhile the little puppy is being cared for at a foster home for the Franklin County Humane Society where she is now being treated for Parvo. One of the women responsible for the puppy’s rescue is hoping to adopt the adorable canine once she gets well.

Did the woman who was seen leaving the puppy at the sewer department abandon the puppy because the pup was sick? Parvo is a very contagious virus transmitted from dog to dog and can be fatal for puppies. It is very important to have puppies inoculated against the virus early in life.

It is never permissible to abandon an animal because they are ill. There are many options available to pet owners, other than leaving a defenceless animal to languish in pain until they die.

The disease presents with vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and lethargy. Early treatment increases the survival rate.

Ailing Man Desperate To Find Foster Home For His Dog

For Brent Witten his dog Magnum means the world. Unfortunately recent health problems have made it impractical for Witten to care for Magnum until he gets back on his feet.

Now the Nampa, Idaho man and his family are looking for a foster home for Magnum so they don’t have to send him to the pound.

Back in December Witten was in a restaurant when he collapsed. Witten would spend weeks in the ICU on life support. Doctors aren’t sure if it was a seizure or a stroke, but Witten was left immobilized. Witten is doing better, but is confined in a wheelchair with limited mobility. His doctors believe it will take about eight months for Witten to regain his mobility.

Initially Witten’s ex-wife was caring for Magnum, but last month she passed away from cancer. In the interim Witten’s daughter, Laura, has been caring for Magnum. However, with the recent death of her mother, her father in rehab and several kids to look after she is unable to care for Magnum properly.

With all that the family has been through in the past months Magnum has been there for them. “He can sense when you are down,” said Laura. “He will come up to me when I am having a rough day and he will nudge me and try to cheer me up, almost like he is saying ‘I am here.’” Witten would be devastated if Magnum had to be sent to the pound so he’s hoping someone out there can foster his beloved dog until he is mobile again. “I am looking for someone to take care of him until I get back on my feet,” said Witten.

L.E.A.S.H – New Non-Profit Animal Rescue Dedicated To Helping Abandoned and Abused Animals

“I Wish these guys all the best for the future in their new venture.”

A new non-profit organization has been formed in Aiken County called L.E.A.S.H. This organization was formed July 3^rd of this year, 2012. L.E.A.S.H is an animal rescue against euthanasia and is dedicated in helping lost and neglected animals find their “forever homes”.

Jess and Lars Swearington III are the founders of L.E.A.S.H and they have dedicated their time and energy on ensuring the safety of animals around the Aiken and North Augusta areas.

One of the key volunteers for L.E.A.S.H is Teresa Cox, who is in charge of the kennel operations and has spent most of her volunteer time caring for the animals that have been brought into the rescue and she also assists in preparing them for adoptions and foster homes. The process of preparing them for their foster home involves medically treating them, socializing them, and observing them until it is certain that they are ready to leave the rescue. Many of the animals come in needing immediate nutrition and immediate medical attention and some just need the tender loving care that they have been denied.

In an interview with Swearington, we asked him what made him decide to create L.E.A.S.H. and what was the mission they wished to achieve. Swearington responded by saying “We saw a need in our community. On a daily basis my wife and I saw the abandoned, the neglected, and the abused. One day we saw enough. The key to our organization is simple. “Every animal deserves a chance; a chance to be loved, to be cherished, to smile. Every animal deserves to be saved, to not fear, to be brought home to safety.”

As of right now there have been 22 dogs rescued, 3 dogs adopted, and 2 dogs currently in foster care. Left for dead in Tracy ditch, pup now looking for a home

“OMG…wouldn’t surprise me if this was done by kids…unfortunately some parents aren’t fit to have children! Their behavior can manifest itself through to the child, who then doesn’t know how to deal with the things they have seen or felt; thus they take their rage out on defenseless animals or smaller kids etc Please if anyone know’s anything, contact the local police!!”

TRACY — Larry the puppy had a bad start on life. Found in a Tracy ditch last month, he had been abused, his right eye poked out, and was left in the dirt to die.

But the Labrador pup is resilient, and after being treated for his injuries, is now looking for a new home.

“Our foundation was contacted after an anonymous good Samaritan found the puppy and took him to the local animal shelter,” said Larry Hite, founder of the Noah’s Ark Foundation.

“Seeing his injury, shelter staff took him to the local vet and that’s when we got the call. When I saw him I knew I couldn’t walk away. I felt so sorry for the little guy that I ended up paying most of his vet bills out of my own pocket,” Hite said. “His right eye could not be saved.”

The pup was nicknamed Larry after Larry Hite, both of whom are blind in their right eye.

Noah’s Ark, a non-profit, was formed by Hite, a Tracy resident, in January. The goal of the foundation is to rescue sick or injured animals and be able to cover their medical costs. The average surgical cost for a dog could run $600 to $800, and in one case it was upwards of $1,000,” Hite said.

The foundation has helped both dogs and cats in multiple cities including Dublin, Brentwood, Tracy and Stockton. It has also been featured on the morning news show “Good Day Sacramento.”

After surgery, the pup was placed in the care of Sharon Silbert, a member of Noah’s Ark.

“Larry is just a love,” she

said. “He gets along great with other dogs and even cats. He has a mellow personality, which is rare for a puppy. He’s very playful, housebroken and has manners. Who ever gets him is going to get a wonderful dog.”

This past week, Larry traveled to Dublin where he will remain in foster care with Tri-Valley Animal Rescue until a home can be found for him. Larry is current on his shots and has also been micro-chipped.

“He has so much energy and loves to play,” said Chris Stein who is now fostering the injured puppy. “When you watch him play you realize that he doesn’t even know he had this injury. And, on top of that, he is highly intelligent.”

Stein plans to bring Larry, recently re-named Raider, to their pet adoption fair which is held Saturdays in downtown Pleasanton at the Farmer’s Market. For information on adopting him, call Stein at 925-461-4347.

Madison police investigating animal cruelty case (updated)

MADISON, Alabama — After receiving an anonymous tip early Thursday morning about a strong odor coming from 815 Crestview Drive, Madison police found more than 40 dogs living in deplorable conditions and several others which were already dead.

As a result of the discovery, the police are conducting an investigation of the dogs’ owners, an elderly couple who Lt. Terrell Cook said has been “blinded by their love for dogs and it just got out of hand.”

The couple, who have not been identified, were moved out of the home and family members were coming from out-of-town to help out with the problem, said Cook.

“It’s a very sad situation,” he said. “They are real sweet people and have been very cooperative. We feel very sorry for them. However, we have to hold people accountable for their actions.”

Criminal charges are pending until all animals are accounted for during the investigation, said Cook.

“We are still discussing it with our legal department,” said Cook who said none of the animals had city licenses and some may have to be euthanized because of their condition.

Cook said the animals ranged in size from new-born puppies to very large dogs.

Madison City Animal Control as well as Huntsville Animal Services, The Madison Animal Rescue Foundation (MARF), and The Ark are working together with local vets to try and save as many of the dogs as possible.

“We appreciate all their help, especially Huntsville Animal Services and their director (Dr. Karen Sheppard),” said Cook. “We couldn’t have done it without them.”

All the dogs have been taken to local veterinarians for examination, said Cook.
