“The slaughterhouse is chaos. Everything is coated in a layer of blood, faeces and body parts. The slaughter area is heaving with people, live animals and slaughtered bodies. The sounds and smells are overwhelming.
Men grab defenceless sheep by the fleece or back leg. They fall to their knees and are forcefully dragged, one by one, to the slaughter line. Cattle are dragged by ropes around their necks. When they try to resist restraint they are yelled at and beaten viciously with metal rods. The animals are visibly terrified and in their frantic attempts to escape they slip, trip and fall, slamming their heads into the concrete floor.
Groups of sheep are forced to jump over dead bodies and wide gutters full of blood. They desperately try to force their way away from the bodies of other sheep they have just watched being slaughtered. Cows are left suspended fully-conscious by one leg for long periods of time, their faces resting in pools of other animals’ blood. They watch animals being slaughtered all around them. I wonder if they realize it will soon be their turn?”

BRUSSELS—Europe-wide tests of “beef” products conducted after the region’s horse-meat scandal found that nearly 5% were contaminated with horse meat, and the percentage was sharply higher in a few countries, especially France and Greece.
The European Union, Switzerland and Norway organized the tests in February after horse-meat DNA was found in products labeled as beef in a number of countries, prompting a public outcry, criminal investigations and pledges from authorities to discover whether the presence of horse meat in Europe’s beef supply is widespread. The authorities found 200 positive samples out of 4,497 tested, or 4.4%.
Nearly a quarter of all positive tests in the 27 EU nations occurred in France, home to a food processor, Spanghero, that shipped large amounts of horse meat found in frozen lasagna, spaghetti Bolognese and other beef dishes in the U.K. and elsewhere. Greek samples accounted for nearly 20% of all EU positive tests. Around 13% of samples were positive in both countries, the highest rate in Europe.

phenylbutazone, known as “bute,” a painkiller used on animals that is a health risk for humans.
“Today’s findings have confirmed that this is a matter of food fraud and not of food safety,” said Tonio Borg, the EU health commissioner. “In the coming months, the commission will propose to strengthen the controls along the food chain in line with lessons learned.”
The commission, the EU’s executive arm, could seek new legal authority that would give it the power to require action from member states to fight fraud in the food chain, commission spokesman Frédéric Vincent said.
The horse-meat scandal offered a window into the complex supply chains that move food ingredients from farms across Europe, through trading firms, processing plants and ultimately to packaged food products on supermarket shelves. The horse meat that found its way to U.K. supermarkets originated from slaughterhouses in Romania; at various points, it moved through a warehouse in the Netherlands owned by a Cypriot firm called Draap Trading, Spanghero’s facility in southwestern France, the French food-processing firm Comigel SAS and finally to the frozen-food company Findus Group.
Comigel and Findus have pointed the finger at their suppliers for mislabeling horse meat as beef, while Draap and Spanghero have said the meat they shipped was labeled as horse meat. Authorities in several countries are conducting criminal investigations. The U.K. has arrested three men in a separate horse-meat investigation who worked at processing plants in Wales and West Yorkshire.
The French government said its positive tests were particularly high because it focused on suppliers and products that were already suspected of mislabeling horse meat.The government said it would propose EU-wide rules that will strengthen penalties for food-chain fraud to a maximum of five years in prison and 10% of a company’s annual revenue.
The animal-protection group Humane Society International said European governments should have also tested for other common medications administered to horses that pose a health risk to humans.
“Testing for just one of the many drugs banned for use in animals that enter the food chain falls short of a precautionary and thorough approach to addressing fraud and ensuring food safety standards are met,” said Joanna Swabe, Humane Society International’s EU director.

GOOD NEWS that the Montana House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee has struck down Senate Bill 397 – which would have allowed the relentless killing of wolves, mountain lions and black bears in Montana – by a vote of 17-4. SB 397 was rejected and tabled indefinitely, due in part to overwhelming public opposition.

“How can anyone think, shoving a gavage (pipe or tube) down the esophagus, of geese or ducks then force feeding them with, typically, corn boiled with fat (to facilitate ingestion) so the birds liver becomes over enlarged; so it can then be eaten as a delicacy… is totally beyond me! Of course it’s bloody cruel & barbaric, no other animal that I can think of is force fed via a tube to make any part of their body fatter for human consumption. The ALDF (the same anti-foie group that sued Napa restaurant La Toque) had argued that foie gras is “a diseased product unfit for human consumption,” and asked the court to step in and order the USDA to “remove foie gras from the American food supply.”
In the ruling (warning: PDF), U.S. District JudgeOtis Wright explains his decision to dismiss the case: “Plaintiffs‘ voluminous submission of technical papers and data supports the Court’s view that Plaintiffs are challenging a scientific conclusion and not a legal one … this is an issue falling squarely under the USDA’s discretion by law.”
Although selling and producing foie gras is still illegal in California, the ALDF is not entitled to judicial review on this case so, for now, the rest of the country can rest easily knowing their foie is safe. “For those who partake in this delicacy…I hope it fxxxxg chokes you!”
France‘s Council of State on Wednesday granted a reprieve for two zoo elephants who had been ordered put down because of their suspected infection with tuberculosis, to the delight of Brigitte Bardot and other animal rights campaigners.
Bardot, who had threatened to quit France for Russia if Baby, 42, and Nepal, 43, were put to sleep, called for the pair of pachyderms to be put into the care of her animal welfare foundation.
“They are old ladies,” Bardot said in a statement welcoming the ruling. “Now we have to find them a suitable place, take care of them if necessary and leave them in peace.”
Baby and Nepal have faced an execution order since last year, when municipal officials in Lyon decided they had almost certainly been infected with TB and warned they could be a threat to the health of other animals and visitors to the Tete d’Or zoo in the city.
After a nationwide outcry and a string of temporary reprieves, the Council of State on Wednesday finally lifted the threat of execution by ruling that it was unclear that having the animals put down was the only way to prevent the risk of further infection.
In light of that, the execution order could be illegal and was likely disproportionate to the actual health risk, the court, which rules on disputes arising from administrative decisions, concluded.
Baby and Nepal’s fate has been clouded since August 2012, when another elephant, Java, died at the age of 67 and a post mortem revealed she had been suffering from TB.
The order for the two younger elephants to be put down followed in December but animal rights activists had maintained there was no certainty that they were definitely infected.
“It is a great relief,” Bardot said. “We do not have the right to have animals put down as a precaution. It is disgusting. Baby and Nepal have been isolated for more than two years, they don’t represent a threat to anyone.”
Bardot’s threat to move to Russia had come in the wake of her actor friendGerard Depardieu‘s decision to accept a Russian passport after being criticised by the Socialist government for taking up residence in neighbouring Belgium for tax reasons.
“Not sure about animal laws in Siberia, but I hope when they find the bastards they do to them, what they did to the dog…then throw cold water over their naked bodies & leave them outside for a couple of nights in freezing temperatures…heartless cowards…where are the parents? Where’s the Animal Control Society that is going to deal with this?”

The dog died in a sickening New Year prank in Severniy, a suburb of Novosibirsk, say reports. “What sort of sick imbecile does this? I am sure they are born without that part of the brain that controls sympathy, empathy, right & bloody wrong!”

It is not known if the animal was a household pet or a stray dog – but the revolting treatment it was subjected to has resulted in a web appeal to identify and shame those responsible. “It matters not whether this dog was a pet or stray, these shit heads need catching & dragged round on the ice with no clothes on until their dicks fall off!”
The image emerged on 4 January, two days after the act of torture, and was going viral on Russian social sites.
‘We are searching for witnesses’ said one posting.
‘Yesterday, 2 January, at approximately 10 pm, some bast***s were driving around Severniy village, dragging the dog tied with a rope to a car behind them. “So, what did you do? Obviously not try to stop them!”
‘The car is silver Toyota Corolla. We didn’t spot the number plate.’
Ironically, the horrific picture emerged on the same day that famous 77 year old Hollywood actress Brigette Bardot threatened to leave her native France and seek Russian citizenshipover plans to put to death two elephants at a zoo in Lyon.
The elephants called Baby and Nepal have contracted tuberculosis.
‘If the powers that be have the cowardice and the shamelessness to kill Baby and Nepal, I have decided to take Russian nationality and quit this country that is nothing more an animal cemetery,’ she warned. “Good for her, I do like a women who is beautiful & strong when it comes to animals!”
In 2011 Bardot, a 1960s sex symbol, hailed Vladimir Putin – who this week granted Russian citizenship to actor Gerard Depardieu – as ‘my favourite prime minister’ after he banned the import and export of harp seal skins.
But after the revelation of the dog picture, one posting from Irina Serebryanaya asked in disbelief: ‘And Brigette Bardot is going to move to Russia because of the elephants….?‘ “Well she didn’t know some sick scummy bastards were going to do this, when she said it!”

Also, it is VERY IMPORTANT that we take action AGAINST a draft management plan which has been developed to provide advice on the management of the Grey Wolf in British Columbia.
The proposed plan supports the elimination of wolves where they overlap with ranchers, the machine gunning of wolves, the continued sterilization of wolves, and lax hunting and trapping regulations, with no bag limits, no specific tag requirements and year-round killing in some regions.

The current draft management plan for the Grey Wolf in British Columbia certainly does NOT cover the needs of a better BC for wolves, wildlife and people. It is a horrendous proposal lacking conservation, ecology, and ethics. Based on fear and mismanagement, it will lead our ecosystems to total impoverishment.
Top predators are among the most outstanding achievements of wilderness, evolving over hundreds of centuries; conservation of wolves and the wild habitat they thrive upon has even been linked to stopping climate change.
Wolves and other iconic predators MUST be protected in an ethical and sustainable way and management plans need to take this into account.
To improve the draft management plan, the following suggestions MUST therefore be considered:1. Extend the deadline for public input to January 30.2. NO helicopter killing or sterilization of wolves.3. NO leghold traps, snares or baiting.
4. Return to former species licence, quotas, bag limits, restricted seasons, and mandatory reporting of kills for hunting wolves.
5. A decision and statement that lethal predator control is NOT an option for the recovery of mountain caribou and a stop to the Quesnell Highland wolf sterilization and removal project.
6. A provincial management plan for wolves that considers the social stability of packs as well as population size to ensure the long term conservation of the species in its most natural form.
7. A commitment to reduce wolf-livestock-human conflicts through prevention, and provision of educational initiatives and incentives for responsible husbandry practices.
8. Protect large tracts of habitat for wolves and their prey. Ensure that protected areas are large enough to support multiple wolf families with no hunting/trapping allowed.
LONDON — In a setback for animal rights campaigners, France’s top judges ruled on Friday that bullfighting does not contravene the Constitution.

The decision came in the same month as live coverage of bullfightingreturned to television in Spain, the home of the corrida, after a six-year ban.
So is bullfighting making a comeback after decades of campaigns to abolish it, or are the latest developments a blip in the long-term decline of an activity that opponents say is animal torture?
Campaigners, including the veteran French actors Brigitte Bardot and Alain Delon, had called on the Constitutional Council in France to rule that laws banning mistreatment of animals should be applied across the country, ending the exceptions granted to regions of southern France where bullfighting is an old tradition.
The judges ruled, however, that such “uninterrupted local traditions” did not contravene the Constitution. The same went for in the French West Indies.
Despite the ruling, the animal rights lobby is confident bullfighting is on the way out. The last corridain the Spanish region of Catalonia was held last year after the regional Parliament voted to ban bullfighting.
As my colleague Raphael Minder wrote at the time: “The number of bullfights held in Spain has fallen by just over a third since the onset of the financial crisis — to 1,724 last year from 2,622 in 2007.”
However, economic considerations can work both ways. Before the French ruling, business leaders in southern France interviewed by the Agence France Press agency said bullfighting was a significant contributor to the economies of cities like Nîmes and Arles, helping employment and tourism.
The general public, meanwhile, appears evenly divided on the issue.
On the eve of the ruling, a poll carried out on behalf of Crac, a European anti-bullfighting lobby group, indicated that 57 percent of the French wanted a ban, and another survey put the figure at 48 percent.
The Crac poll also suggested a political split on the issue, with 58 percent of left-leaning respondents favoring a ban, compared with 41 percent of right-leaning respondents.
Manuel Valls, the French interior minister, who was born in Spain, fueled the indignation of abolitionists by affirming that bullfighting was “a culture worth preserving.”
Politics has certainly played a part in developments in Spain. The broadcastingban on live fights was lifted after the center-right government of Prime MinisterMariano Rajoy came to power last December following a campaign in which he pledged to support bullfighting and even try to get it reinstated in Catalonia.
“I’m in favor of freedom,” he said. “No one is forced to go to a bullfight and it should not be banned either.”
French abolitionists are now expected to consider taking the issue to the European Court of Human Rights and to press for legislation in Parliament to outlaw bullfighting.
Mr. Giesbert, who said he was not a bullfighting fan, wrote that those who brought the issue to the Council “totally represent the spirit of an age which accepts animal suffering as long as it’s not visible.” For diehard aficionados it is a question of freedom and tradition.
Víctor Manuel Mendes-Marinhais, a Portuguese bullfighter who made his name in Spain, said it was time to fight back against the abolitionists at a time when the corrida was facing unprecedented challenges.
Bullfighting was a cultural expression and “culture can’t be banned,” he said this month.
“We’ve passively allowed the anti-bullfight lobby to organize with the support of international animal rights organizations,” he said. “With our taxes, we aficionados are financing those who want to ban us.”

Although bullfighting originated in neighbouring Spain, it took root in France a century and a half ago. Fights – known as corridas in Spain – are especially popular in the Nimes and Arles areas.
A ban on bullfighting came into force in Spain’s Catalonia region this year, after lawmakers voted for it last year – the first such ban in the country’s mainland.
The BBC’sChristian Fraser in Paris says a recent opinion poll in France suggested 48% support for a ban, although earlier polls suggested as many as two-thirds of the French electorate would back a ban.
France’s Interior Minister Manuel Valls, born in Barcelona, spoke in favour of bullfighting earlier this month.

A tiger has been shot dead after killing a female zookeeper in Germany.
A female zookeeper has been killed in Germany after a tiger escaped from its enclosure and attacked her.
The 43-year-old woman was cornered by the animal after it found its way through a gate that had not been properly shut and wandered into a nearby storage building, police said.
The woman, who has not yet been named, was mauled and bitten and died of her wounds at Cologne Zoo.
A police SWAT team was called, but before it arrived Theo Pagel, the zoo’s director, shot the tiger dead with a rifle that he aimed from a safe vantage point through the storage building’s skylight. It was feared that the tiger had been about to make its way into visitor areas, said police spokesman Stefan Kirchner.
Police briefly cleared the area as a precautionary measure, though officials said the public was never in any danger.
Mr Kirchner said it was unlikely that members of the public had witnessed the incident, which occurred around noon (1000 GMT) on Saturday.
According to the Cologne newspaper Express, the tiger was a male called “Altai.”
Mr Pagel said: “This is the darkest day of my life. I shot and killed the animal so that we could enter … and take a look. But the employee was already dead.”
The zoo later re-opened, but a planned late-night opening was canceled.
Altai, a four-year-old , was moved to Cologne Zoo in April last year and was paired with a female from France. He can be seen in YouTube footage posted to the website in 2011.
According to a statement from the zoo, the keeper had been experienced in working with tigers.
Cologne Zoo in western Germany, founded in 1860, is one of the oldest and best-known in the country and is home to some 10,000 animals from 700 species.

We can not hope to achieve better laws, to protect animals, unless we unite as one, to speak up for those who are voiceless!!
