MYSORE/ MADIKERI: The male tiger captured near Thithimati in Kodagu is severely injured and weak, said vets at Mysore Zoo, after it was shifted there.
They began treatment on Saturday morning to try and stabilize its worsening condition. The injuries are believed to have been sustained during a territorial fight with another tiger, zoo director BP Ravi said.
The tiger is believed to be 14 years old, and is said to have killed five cattlehead in the recent past. It is suspected to have killed a cow on Saturday, hours before it was captured in Anechowkur range in Nagarahole tiger reserve. The animal was under mild sedation when it reached the zoo at 5am.
Preliminary medical examination also revealed that the tiger has a big wound in the middle of its face, with a worn-out upper lip. The wound is full of maggots, and the tiger is in a critical condition, he stated.
The tiger, which had created fear in Thithimati town, was trapped at 11.30pm Friday night. Unoj, a teenager who stepped out of her house to answer nature’s call, sighted the tiger sleeping in a bush. She tiptoed back to her house and informed the family.
Later, the forest department trapped the animal and carried it away in a cage. The operation was guided by Hunsur wildlife ACF K D Belliappa, Mathigodu forest range officer Devaraju and his team. The tiger may require a minimum of two months to recover, Dr Umashankar from Hunsur said.
Two months ago, a male tiger was captured at Hebballa near HD Kote and shifted to the zoo, and is now recovering. It has responded to treatment and is gaining weight. It appears that both tigers were driven out of their territories due to old age and pushed to the fringe areas to sustain themselves, Ravi said, adding the zoo has proposed a rescue and rehabilitation centre at Koorghalli to take care of rescued animals.
Tiger experts are trying to locate the 14-year-old tiger’s history in their database. “We may find more details in a couple of days,” a wildlife activist told STOI.
Police say they shot and killed a bear cub that was hit by a car as it tried to cross Vanderbilt Hill Road Wednesday morning.
The bear was still alive when police arrived on scene a little after 6:34 a.m. when the call came in, but it was “gravely injured,” said Lt. David Campbell, a spokesman for the Juneau Police Department.
For Info. Only
“If an animal is suffering, and it’s a wild animal, then in order to ease the suffering of the animal we’ll put it down,” Campbell said in a phone interview.
The bear was killed at about 7 a.m. An official from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game recovered the bear’s body a few minutes later.
It was not immediately known what type of vehicle hit the bear, or the cause of the accident. The crash was reported to police by the person driving the vehicle, and the motorist’s identity was not released.
Neil Barten, a Fish and Game Wildlife Management Coordinator who retrieved the bear’s body, said JPD did the right thing by killing the bear by gunshot.
Barten speculated the bear had broken its back or crushed its pelvis because it was unable to walk.
“The poor thing was on the road, and it was trying to crawl,” he said.
Barten said it was a maleblack bear cub that was brownish in colour. He estimated it weighed 75 pounds and was less than a year old.
Fish and Game has received reports that a female black bear and her three cubs — two of which were black and one that was brown — have been in the area.
Barten speculated that the brown cub was straggling behind while following its mother and siblings crossing the street when it was hit by the car.
As Barten was loading the cub’s remains into the back of his pickup truck, he said the mother and her two remaining cubs re-crossed the street and scurried back toward the hillside above Twin Lakes.
“It’s just kind of unfortunate because they were getting so close to getting to bed for the winter,” Barton said, adding that bear sightings in town will drop off in the next two weeks as the bears begin to hibernate.
Barten said about four to five bears are hit on the road each year in Juneau.
“OMG…that must hurt…the underside of Nakai’s jaw has a gaping wound, one can almost see the ligaments or muscles of the tongue! It’s such a precise cut, it looks like it’s been done with a knife; it’s so precise! Hard to imagine another killer whale could do such a bite, as surely Nakai’s wound would be ragged around the edges with bits of skin dangling.!I have no idea how it happened, but it will take a long time to heal!!”
Nakai, an 11-year-old performing whale suffered gash to the chin which left its jawbone exposed
Park claims it happened when he hit the side of the pool
However reports claim Nakai may have been in a fight with two other whales
Peta accuse SeaWorld of housing killer whales together incompatibly, a violation of the Animal Welfare Act
A performing Killer Whale suffered a horrific injury which left its jawbone exposed at a SeaWorld theme park, prompting fury from animal rights groups.
Pictures showing Nakai, an 11-year-old whale who performs at the San Diego SeaWorld park, with a large gash to its chin were leaked online by a unnamed whistleblower.
In a statement, SeaWorld said Nakai’s injury was caused when it ‘came into contact with a portion of the pool environment’.
Jawbone: Pictures released by a SeaWorld whistleblower show the horrific injuries suffered by killer whale Nikai which insiders claim were result of a fight between three whales
However online reports suggest the incident happened on September 20 when Nakai got into a fight with two other Killer Whales Ike and Keet.
They believe Nakai was either bitten by one of the other whales or smashed into the concrete pool wall.
Journalist Tim Zimmermann reported: ‘It happened last week during a night show, seemingly during a major altercation involving Nakai, Keet, and Ike.
‘It’s not clear if there was an aggressor or instigator, or if they all suddenly went after each other.
‘In response to the altercation, Nakai split to the back pool. The onstage trainers, not realizing how badly injured he was, continued the show with the other whales.
‘It was only when they called Nakai over later that night that they realised he was seriously hurt.’
Animal welfare group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has submitted a complaint to theU.S. Department of Agriculture.
They have accused SeaWorld of housing Killer Whales together incompatibly – a direct violation of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
A spokesman for the group said: ‘The AWA makes it clear that marine mammals that are not compatiblemust not be housed in the same enclosure.
‘Yet SeaWorld parks have a long history of housing incompatible orcas from widely divergent groups together in enclosures – and the result has been stress, agitation, aggressive and bloody raking, serious injury, and death.‘
In a statement, a spokesman for the park said: ‘There is no organisation in the world more committed to the physical, social and mental welfare of its animals than SeaWorld.’
They said Nikai is being treated with antibiotics and had been ‘swimming comfortably and interacting with other killer whales’.
In February 2010 trainerDawn Brancheau was killed by six-ton killer whale Tilikum, who is Nikai’s father, at SeaWorld’s Orlando park.
The six ton whale dragged the 40-year-old into the pool by her pony tail and then thrashed her while she was in the water, as horrified spectators looked on.
It’s was the third death Tilikum had been involved in.
In 1991 trainer Keltie Byrne died after slipping and falling into the tank with Tilikum and two other whales.
In 1999, a man sneaked past security at SeaWorld Orlando and was later found dead, his body draped over Tilikum.
Earlier this year Peta filed a lawsuit against San Diego SeaWorld claiming that the five killer whales at the are treated like slaves because they’re forced to live in tanks and perform daily.
Banned: No trainer is allowed in the water with Tilikum because of his size and dangerous history
The five whales were named as the plaintiffs in the case.
However a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit saying the 13th amendment – which outlaws slavery and involuntary servitude – applies only to humans.
” I can’t believe that Corporal Steve Hernandez is literally waiting to see if that cow gets worse before they act…it’s injured & been down for 4 day’s days already; stuck in it’s own manure! It will surely die if injured & left for much longer…I just can’t see the RSPCA leaving it to suffer like that saying ‘lets see if it gets worse first before we act'” How much worse does it have to be? All the cow’s were skinny, dread to think what they would have looked like if the neighbour had not been feeding & watering them!
BEEBE, AR – For the entire summer, Floyd Corley watched neighbouring cows graze on dead grass, leaves and dirt.
Vodpod videos no longer available.
“I’ve been watering the cows all summer,” said Corley. “Otherwise they wouldn’t have had no water.”
Corley says he’s watched the animals waste away for years, feeding them whenever he could afford it. But after seeing one injured cow lay in it’s own feces for four days, he called White County investigators.
“I wish somebody would load them up and take the somewhere because it’s just a matter of time before they get worse,” said Corley.
“This time of year with the drought that we’ve had, all cows are not looking that good,” said Corporal Steve Hernandez with the White County Sheriff’s Department.
That’s exactly why they’re not charging the owner just yet. With extreme drought conditions, farmers across the state are barely able to afford hay and feed and you don’t have to go far to find an underfed animal. However, Corley still believes these conditions are extreme.
“If you can’t afford to feed these animals, why don’t you sell them? They need to be sold or given to someone who can take care of them,” he said.
On the phone, the owner of the cows denied Corley’s abuse claim adding he has been treating the wounded cow. So deputies will continue to monitor the animals adding if this cow doesn’t get up within the next few days, the owner could face animal cruelty charges.
“If the cow is still there and the condition is getting worse than well start talking to the owner about charges,” said Cpl. Hernandez.
“Please note, out of hundreds of pictures & countless videos, I have tried to be as discreet as possible with images of Kabang…I know it’s not pleasant to see her injuries, but when you’re loved, like she is, it doesn’t matter what you look like. Kabang really is one in a million & very, very lucky…she was actually meant for the cooking pot!”
This past February, a family dog in the Philippines was credited with saving two children from getting hit by a speeding motorcycle, by throwing herself in the path of the bike.
The dog named Kabang lost the top part of her jaw and face. It was a horrific injury, but she survived. A local vet asked the family to turn over the dog to their custody for euthanasia. But the grateful family refused to put down the loyal and pregnant dog. Kabang has since given birth to her six puppies.
When people heard about Kabang’s courageous actions and her plight, there was outpouring of goodwill and concern for the dog. This week it was announced that Kabang will be flown to the United States so she can undergo reconstructive surgery, in order to survive.
According to the Inquirer Global Nation, a group of veterinarians, animal lovers and humanitarian groups helped raise enough money to organize the trip and surgery.
“Kabang is going to the US with the help of many kind-hearted individuals and donors, who would like to see the dog…live longer. Her story inspired many people especially animal lovers,” veterinarian Dr. Anton Lim said, citing a confirmation from Ramona Consunji of the Animal Welfare Coalition.
The plan is to fly Kabang over to the US within the month. Karen Kenngott, the US coordinator for Animal Welfare Coalition, said: “The more time that goes by, the more Kabang is at risk of infection. Fungal infections can be especially difficult to eradicate and any infection in the bone can be a lengthy process to treat at best. Her chances are better the sooner she can get those wounds closed.” Dr. Kim also agrees speed is of the essence now. Kabang is already losing one of her remaining upper molars, a tooth very important for chewing food because of an earlier infection.
Kenngott said Kabang would be operated on at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the University of California in Davis, “under a team of multi-disciplinary doctors and surgeons led by Dr. Boaz Arzi.” Arzi is a maxillofacial and dental surgeon.
Veterinarians in the US also had raised money for Kabang’s owners Rudy Bunngal and his wife, Christina accompany the dog to the United States. However, there are some difficulties securing passports for the pair. Despite that problem, everything else is in place to transport Kabang. “So far, the Team Kabang estimated the overall cost for her treatment to reach $20,000. Kabang is expected to be in the US for a month,” said Lim.
The Philippine Airlines Foundation said they have sponsored four roundtrip tickets for the Bunggals and the two accompanying veterinarians. Maria Carmen Aquino Sarmiento, executive director of the Philippine Airlines Foundation, said in a statement: “The Philippine Airlines through the PAL Foundation will help Kabang, the heroine dog of Zamboanga City to get to UC Davis so she can get her face fixed.”
“Please note, close up images of Kabang’s face just after the accident have been blurred out. However, this video does show Kabang as she is now, so viewer discretion advised”
“Kabang’s story – Few know the dog, wasn’t rescued to be a pet – she was meant for there dinner plate, like many more before her! I sincerely hope her recent litter of pups will remain as pets too!”
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—There must have been something about Kabang, the pet dog that recently lost half her face saving the lives of two children. Until she came into their lives as a foundling puppy, the Bunggals occasionally kept dogs but only for meat.
In fact that was what Rudy Bunggal had in mind over a year ago when he found Kabang, then a few weeks old, in a swamp where the unwanted puppy had been left to die.
“The dogs we raised did not last longer than three months. I slaughtered them. It’s our only way of eating meat,” Rudy Bunggal told the Inquirer in an interview. “Life is difficult and I have to feed my family.”
Bunggal, 57, is a “vulcanizer” who earns a living mending punctured tires while his wife, Christina, sells small quantities of candy.
The couple has one daughter, Dina, 11, but a niece, Princess, 3, lives with them.
Neighbors agreed that life for the couple was difficult and that the family subsisted mostly on water spinach—”kangkong” or swamp cabbage—harvested from the nearby swamp.
As Rudy Bunggal tells the story, he plucked Kabang out of the swamp amid heavy rain over a year ago. He initially had the same thought about what to do with the puppy: make a family meal at the right time.
So the Bunggals raised Kabang, initially giving her coffee creamer because milk was expensive.
But days, then weeks and months went by and Kabang never came close to being placed in a cooking pot. Bunggal said he did not know why he never felt any urge to slaughter the animal.
Ricky Llorete, one of the family’s neighbors, said they too had looked forward to eating Rudy’s “azucena,” as dog meat as referred to by Filipinos, after Kabang’s arrival.
Llorete said the Bunggal family was known in the community as dog eaters and would share with their neighbors cooked dog meat.
“During Christmas or New Year, we ate azucena and drank tuba (coconut wine),” he said.
Christina, Rudy’s wife, said she, too, was puzzled when Kabang lasted longer than her predecessors.
“It was maybe because we treated her differently. Of all the dogs we raised, she was the only one we fed coffeemate and milk. None of the other dogs we had raised spent the night in the same space with our daughter,” Christina said.
The family shared whatever food they had with Kabang.
Dina and her cousin would play with the dog, who never ventured alone farther than the door of the Bunggal family’s shanty on Nuñez Extension here.
“If she went out of the house, it would be with the children,” Rudy said.
Christina Bunggal plays with a horribly disfigured but treasured family pet Kabang
He described Kabang as a “sweet dog,” who wanted to be cuddled.
Rudy said that aside from providing joy to Dina and her cousin, Kabang would also guard the family’s house against intruders.
“She would sit on the (vulcanizing tools) apparently to prevent strangers from taking them,” Christina said.
“Rudy became a different person when Kabang came. He became humane to animals,” Llorente said.
Rudy admitted that he could not thank Kabang enough when she saved Dina and her cousin from harm one day last December.
Kabang, a hero female aspin, enjoys Rudy Bunggal’s scratching of her head and neck.
The two girls were walking across Nuñez Extension one day in December unaware that a speeding motorcycle was bearing down on them. From out of nowhere Kabang jumped onto the path of the motorcycle.
Kabang lived but she lost her upper snout, which got caught in the spokes of the motorcycle’ front wheel.
Rudy maintained that the incident was Kabang’s way of repaying the Bunggals for saving the puppy and caring for her.
“I’ll say again, I have no sympathy whatsoever for those who wish to risk life & limb, it’s their choice”, I only feel for the poor bulls who get injured whilst forced to run on cobbled stone, into the the ring of death!
Thousands dashed through Spanish Pamplona for a bull run at the San Fermin fiesta, an event that ushers in Spain’s summer party season. Several runners were knocked to the ground and some were trampled on by the animals weighing more than 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) but there were no gorings or life-threatening injuries. The daily run is the highlight of the 9-day street drinking festival, and comes after a full day and night of hard partying. The bulls will be killed in the evening in the bull ring, and their meat served up in Pamplona’s restaurants.
“I think the above says it all, hard partying, drinking etc. Yes, many men feel invincible after a hard night on the pop”…it’s just a shame the animals have to suffer for it”
Then there’s the free for all bull fight, where everyone wants to be a hero!
“Idiots! I only feel sorry for the bulls that had to endure the abuse & the horses that were put in harms way. If this isn’t barbaric brutal abuse, I don’t know what is!”
He dragged his estranged girlfriend’s dog for miles behind his pickup truck. Stops…curses at the witnesses, and later abandons the poor thing on the side of the road. All unintentional he claims. And he “really felt bad about it and stuff”.
His trial was held last week and resulted in a deadlocked jury. They only deliberated for two hours. The judge had no choice but to declare a mistrial and set a new trial for August 7. Lovely. We can probably expect the same come August.
It took many weeks for Little Brown Dog to recover from her injuries. But she’s happy in a new home with a veterinarian and has her own Facebook page called “Justice for LBD.”
