Animal Defenders International; Stars Set To Attend Lion Ark Gala Screening

Comments Off on Animal Defenders International; Stars Set To Attend Lion Ark Gala Screening

“I would love see this documentary, but live too far away, I hope it will be shown around England, as I think everyone, not just animal lovers should see it!! Especially those who aren’t aware of the miserable, repetitive & poor conditions, performing animals endure in circuses!!” I am totally ashamed of the English Government, for not fighting & implementing the ban on wild animals in circuses; as they promised. So many other countries have managed to do it, I can’t see any problem, as to  why it has not been in effect sooner; like the British people were promised!!”

Special guests including Bill Oddie, Alexei Sayle, Gillian McKeith, Celia Hammond and Bollywood actress Sofia Hayat are set to attend a glitzy gala screening and celebrity fundraiser in Leicester Square on Saturday December 6th for LION ARK, the multi-award winning critically-acclaimed documentary about the rescue of 25 lions from Bolivian circuses.

WHEN: Saturday December 6th, 6pm
WHERE: Prince Charles Cinema, 7 Leicester Place, London, WC2H 7BY
TICKET INFORMATION: Click here

Following sell out screenings at film festivals around the world, LION ARK is now screening in cinemas across the UK.

More action adventure style than traditional documentary, feel-good movie LIONARK charts one of the world’s most ambitious and daring animal rescues, as a team from Britain’s Animal Defenders International (ADI) swoops on eight illegal circuses spread across Bolivia following a ban.

The story begins when ADI secures a ban on animal circuses in Bolivia following a two-year undercover investigation across South America. The shocking findings lead to public outrage and calls for action across the continent. Bolivia is the first to act. Now ADI must help the government enforce the law. The team journey across a vast, hostile terrain to track down the illegal circuses defying the new law, save the animals and bring them to safety, and a joyous finale sees 25 lions airlifted to freedom in the US.

LION ARK Producer and rescue leader Jan Creamer said: “People have been gripped by the way Lion Ark covers a serious issue about saving animals from circuses, but in a uniquely exciting and enjoyable way. The British public can be very proud that the seeds of this historic operation were sown at Animal Defenders International’s headquarters in London, which makes Lion Ark’s West End gala screening a very special event indeed.”

A smash hit on the international film festival circuit, LION ARK is told through live action interviews, in the moment, as events unfold. This is up close and personal, in the thick of the action; you are as close as you can get to these animals and to understanding their life in the circus and feel the fear and joy of the rescuers as they journey through their incredible mission.

LION ARK Director Tim Phillips said: “The response to Lion Ark has been fantastic, receiving standing ovations, armfuls of awards and sell-out shows around the world and we are looking forward to welcoming so many celebrity supporters at the gala screening. This special event is open to the public so that everyone has a chance to enjoy the uplifting animal magic of Lion Ark on the big screen in London’s Leicester Square, and meet the rescue team directly from their latest mission in Peru.”

A similarly ambitious rescue operation – Spirit of Freedom – is now underway in Peru, where ADI is once again assisting authorities to enforce an animal circus ban, having successfully secured legislation. ADI currently has 30 lions, 9 primates and several other animals in its care, and audiences will hear the very latest news from rescue team leaders LION ARK Director Tim Phillips and Producer Jan Creamer, who have come straight from their latest mission to hold Q&A sessions following each screening across the UK.

The LION ARK rescue mission was backed by legendary and Emmy award-winning US TV ‘Price is Right’ game show host Bob Barker and CSI actress Jorja Fox (‘Sara Sidle’), whose company Seafox Productions is an Associate Producer and both appear in the film. Bob Barker’s support enabled the rescue team to empty Bolivia of its suffering circus animals and build new homes for them in the US.

LION ARK has recently been signed into distribution for television, video on demand,DVD / Blu Ray and in-flight entertainment with ITV Studios Global Entertainment, one of the world’s leading distribution companies which has its own channels in Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East, including flagship ITV broadcasting in 40 countries.

Since opening at Raindance, London and Mill Valley Film Festival, California, LIONARK has taken the film festival circuit by storm with sell out shows, six awards, official selections for 14 prestigious film festivals, and an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding International Motion Picture.

Tickets for LION ARK screenings at UK cinemas including the West End gala and celebrity fundraiser are on sale now. Tickets for the gala start at just £11: click here for more.

For over 2 years, Animal Equality investigators have infiltrated the rabbit meat industry in Spain. Two of the farms investigated are directly linked with restaurants in the UK.

Today, Animal Equality has been featured in The Sunday Times where it reveals the shocking findings of its latest investigation. Two of the farms investigated are linked to and English distributor, and restaurants such as the Terrace at the National Theatre in London.

For over a period of 2 years, Animal Equality investigators infiltrated the Spanish rabbit meat industry. A total of 72 farms, and 4 slaughterhouses have been investigated.

Findings of this investigation:

• Animals killed by blunt force trauma. Furthermore, our investigators have been able to report that this is a common practice within rabbit industry.

• Workers throwing live rabbits into the waste containers, due to over-production.

• Animals with open wounds or infections were left in the cages and had no veterinary treatment.

• Cannibalism amongst certain animals provoked by over-crowded conditions.

• Farms selling rabbits to restaurants without them first meeting health and safety requirements.

• A vet smashing a rabbit against the ground whilst acknowledging, to the camera, that this constitutes animal abuse.

• Farms which had never received health and bio-security inspections

• Dead animals left to rot in cages next to live animals.

Animals Have Friends And Those Friends Have Votes!

Comments Off on Animals Have Friends And Those Friends Have Votes!

“I know who I will be voting for; as a voice for animals!”

The European Elections take place on Thursday 22nd May. Since many laws relating to animals – including at slaughter and in vivisection laboratories – are generated in Europe, Animal Aid is asking you to do two things: 1) vote, and 2) think of the animals as you do so.

Animal Aid wrote to the key political parties standing at these elections to ask for their animal protection policies, and we also put to them five questions relating to animal issues affected by European laws. The Green Party, Animal Welfare Party, Labour Party, Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru all responded in the required timeframe.

The Conservatives, UKIP, the SNP, Sinn Fein, UUP and the Democratic Unionists did not respond at all.

The Green Party supports an end to live export from the UK; mandatory CCTV for all slaughterhouses; ‘absolutely’ opposes cages for egg-laying hens, farrowing crates for pigs and zero grazing of farmed animals; is committed to ending animal experimentation and investing in non-animal replacements; and does not support the use of animals in circuses, horse racing, dog racing or sport shooting. Green Party candidates are standing in every region.

The Animal Welfare Party is a new political party focused squarely on being a voice for animals in Europe. It opposes live transportation of animals; supports mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses; opposes cages for hens, farrowing crates for pigs and zero grazing; supports a phase-out of all animal use in laboratories; and opposes all use of animals in sport and entertainment. The Animal Welfare Party is standing in London only.

Read the full responses made by these two parties, as well as Labour, the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru.

Thank you for making your vote count for animals.

Please ask your friends to vote for the animals too!

“We have to be the voice of the voiceless & ensure laws put in place to protect them; are in use!”

“YOU The PUBLIC have a voice, if you eat meat, don’t you want it to come from healthy farms, where the animals are cared for as they should be.? There are no excuses as you can see in the second video…but farmers cut corners to produce meat cheaply…would you honestly want to eat the meat that came from ill, diseased or filthy animals fed with slop??”

“Every time you open the door to one of these farms, you tell yourself: ‘it will be better than the last. They can’t all be ignoring the law, they can’t all be inflicting such misery.’ But then you see the pigs, and realise the scale of the suffering. It breaks your heart.”

Compassion’s Head of Investigations.

We have created a short video to summarise the findings of our investigation. Please help us to protect the pigs by watching it and sharing it as widely as possible.

The biggest scandal in modern pig farming?

Much of the EU pig industry is completely ignoring basic welfare laws — leading to the suffering of millions of pigs. Compassion in World Farming has pulled together evidence from across Europejoin us in standing up for pig welfare by signing the petitionhttp://www.ciwf.org/EUpigvideo

Last year Compassion visited 45 pig farms across the EU. We went south to Italy and Spain; south-east to Cyprus; west to Ireland; and east to Poland and the Czech Republic. On every single farm we found the laws put in place to protect pig welfare were being flouted – the suffering was hard to witness.

And it doesn’t stop there.

We believe aspects of the Pigs Directive are being blatantly ignored all across the EU, inflicting illegal cruelty on millions of intelligent and sensitive animals. There are over 140 million pigs in the EU at any one time. Sometimes the scale of the challenge we are facing seems overwhelming.

But we have good news. The response to our petition has been amazing. It is the fastest growing petition in Compassion’s history; please help us keep up the momentum.

Horses Found Tied To Wheels of Parked Cars On Front Drive Of House

Comments Off on Horses Found Tied To Wheels of Parked Cars On Front Drive Of House

“WTF…well I’ve seen it all now! How stupid, if this is how he treats his horses then he doesn’t deserve to have them; he obviously knows sod all about horse management. I hope WHW are keeping an eye on this idiot!”

Two horses have been found tied to the wheels of parked cars in London. World Horse Welfare Field Officer Nick White thought he had seen everything in this job, but describes this was his most “bizarre welfare concern” yet.

He was called on 11 April to check on “two horses kept in a tiny concrete area” in Southall, west London. He arrived to find a 16hh Friesian type and 15hh Welsh cob tied to the wheel of a car on the front drive of a house, next to a busy main road.

The cob’s rope was stuck under the engine, preventing him from lifting his head, while the Friesian was foraging from flowerpots.

After untangling the cob, I woke the owner up and discovered he was planning to leave the horses there for two more days, hoping to build a wooden shelter for them on the drive,” said Nick, who issued a time limit by when the horses had to be moved.

“Much to my relief, the owner took my advice of finding pastures green within the time limit. I watched with the rest of the street as both horses were ridden off into the sunset towards Heathrow airport.”

A warning has been issued to the owner, stating that they must not return the horses to the site.

Aintree Named Most Dangerous Racecourse In The Country

Comments Off on Aintree Named Most Dangerous Racecourse In The Country

CALL TO SCRAP BECHER’S BROOK At The Grand National – One horse dead already!

  • Report names Aintree as most dangerous racecourse for horses
  • Demonstrations to be held at Aintree racecourse and Channel 4 in London
  • Animal Aid campaign vehicle to visit Liverpool
  • Cosmetics retailer Lush launches tombstone window displays in memory of equine fatalities
  • Adverts across London and in a national newspaper call on punters not to bet on the National

2012 Neptune Collonges runs clears as According to Pete and jockey Henry Haynes and On His Own and Paul Townshend fall at Bechers. According to Pete was also put down

Despite much heralded ‘safety improvements’, the Grand National’s most notorious obstacle remains a potentially lethal challenge for horses running at Aintree next month. The two horses who died at last year’s eventSynchronised and According To Pete – both fell at Becher’s Brook. The same 4ft 10in fence accounted for Dooneys Gate in 2011. His back was broken after the obstacle brought him down and another horse landed on him.

Animal Aid has long criticised the hard wooden core of Becher’s Brook. Reports, therefore, that the inner structure of Becher’s and other fences will be softened represents, in our view, a positive development.

However, Becher’s remains inherently lethal for many reasons, including its height, the spread, the diagonal angle of approach, the fact that it comes at the end of a fast straight of five demanding fences, and because horses must turn after the obstacle has been jumped. In addition, although changes have been made to the ground on the landing side of Becher’s, the fence is still lower there than on the take-off side, which poses another potential hazard for horses.

Animal Aid insists that the time for tinkering is over – Becher’s Brook must be removed.

Thrills and spills: James Reveley rolls away from the crash. A number of other fallers in the race will renew calls for smaller fences.  Pictures via Daily Mail. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2130235/Grand-National-2012-horse-deaths-Ban-cruel-spectacle.html

Besides Becher’s, other distinctive features make the Aintree annual race extraordinarily dangerous for horses. These include: an overcrowded field of 40 horses; a uniquely long distance, with more fences per mile than any other race; plus perversely challenging obstacles that vary in height and design, unlike the uniform fences found on other British courses. It is due to these and other factors that just 37 per cent of horses entered into the event over the past ten years have managed to complete the course.

Animal Aid anti-Grand National campaign initiatives include:

  • A demonstration outside Channel 4 in London on 6 April (the day of the race) by local activists and supported by Animal Aid. Channel 4 this year takes over broadcasting the Aintree meeting from the BBC.
  • Adverts, asking punters not to bet on the big race, appearing across London and in The Daily Telegraph newspaper.
  • A visit to Liverpool, on 3 April, by a converted ambulance emblazoned with stark protest imagery and messages. On the vehicle’s side, a powerful short film will be screened continuously. Leafleting will take place in various locations around the city.
  • Ethical cosmetics retailer, Lush, to feature a striking window display in its Leeds outlet, drawing attention to the horses who have died at recent Grand Nationals.
  • Animal Aid to attend the annual demonstration outside the gates of Aintree racecourse on the day of the Grand National.
  • Animal Aid’s redesigned unique database of on-course equine fatalities,Deathwatch, to be launched at the start of the Grand National meeting.
  • Animal Aid activists to distribute tens of thousands of leaflets across the country, calling on the public not to place a bet on the race, but instead back the Sanctuary not Cruelty scheme which directly funds two hard-pressed specialist sanctuaries that rescue horses – including ex-racehorses.

A number of course alterations and entry conditions were announced in November 2011, but these did not prevent two horses being killed in the 2012 Grand National. Further changes were introduced at the end of last year and more in recent weeks. But features that make the race so lethal remain unchanged.

Last month, Animal Aid published the report Deathwatch 2012, drawn from its online database that records the deaths of thoroughbreds on all British racecourses. The report reveals that Aintree was the most lethal of all Britain’s 60 racecourses in 2012, when deaths are evaluated in relation to the number of days’ racing. Six horses died at Aintree in just eight days of racing. Three of those fatalities occurred during the three-day Grand National meeting.

Carnage: Horses jump Beechers Brook at the start of the race. There were two confirmed fatalities and many are being to question the ethics of racing horses on such tracks

Says Animal Aid’s Director, Andrew Tyler:

The time has come for Aintree Racecourse to face what for them is an unpalatable truth: the tide of public opinion is turning against its perversely cruel spectacle. An NOP poll conducted on behalf of Animal Aid last year revealed that, of those respondents who expressed a clear opinion, the majority feels that the Grand National is cruel. Our message is clear: people should stop backing this horror show and donate their money instead to sanctuaries that help horses – not to an industry that exploits and kills them.’

Heartbreaking Story Of A German Shepherd Named Prince, Thrown Out Like Old Rubbish

Comments Off on Heartbreaking Story Of A German Shepherd Named Prince, Thrown Out Like Old Rubbish

“Posting for Anita Kelsey, I saw your request on Twitter & so wanted to help in the only way I can. I know nothing will bring Prince back, but I hope this helps, in some small way…God bless all at Mayhew Animal Home, for their outstanding commitment to Animal Welfare.

R.I.P Prince x

R.I.P Prince, a beautiful sweet boy, taken too soon. Now running free, under the bright blue sky & soft fluffy clouds, through sweet-smelling flowers & never-ending green grass, gone to the place all animals go; just over Rainbow Bridge. Jules xx

Please read his story below:

On Friday 12th October Animal Welfare Officers from The Mayhew Animal Home were called to the emergency rescue of a dying dog. The dog had been discovered buried amongst fly-tipped rubbish in a North London park.

The elderly German Shepherd was found collapsed, surrounded by dumped rubbish, litter and a filthy mattress and was initially assumed dead.

After discovering the extent of the suffering and neglect the dog had endured, the charity – a rescue centre in North London – is appealing to the public to help them find the dog’s owner so that they can be held accountable for their actionsWhoever owned this gift from God..you don’t deserve to breathe the same air as humans because you yourself are an animal!! I hope you read this, & I sincerely hope that each time you close your eyes to rest, you will be awoken by the terrible images of the dog you let die. I hope the nightmares continue to haunt you, as you are reminded of Princes pleading eyes, burning into you, begging for some type nourishment. But you didn’t care, did you! Does it make you feel proud, knowing you let a sentient being starve, to near death? Not a lot to ask was it??”

The 13-year-old dog was wearing a collar naming him as Prince and was covered in his own faeces. His coat was matted into hard rocks of hair and he was too weak to lift his head.

The Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officer, Zoe Edwards, said:

“When I initially saw Prince I thought he was dead. He was lifeless, filthy and the smell coming from him was like sewage.
I really don’t understand the mentality of some people. This was obviously someone’s pet who loved them enough to once get him a decent collar and have his name engraved on it.“To the owner of Prince, do you remember getting the dog, you must have loved him at some point…why couldn’t you have taken him to a shelter if he was no longer loved or wanted…it would have been the kindest thing to do…but you left him out like a piece of trash…well just remember Karma is a bitch!”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It is hard to believe that someone owned this dog for this long only to discard him alongside some old rubbish in a park. The condition of the dog indicated to me that this would have taken several months, if not years, for him to get into this mess.Does anyone recognise the dog? did you have a dog live near you who looked like Prince, but who suddenly vanished? Please, ease your conscience & do the right thing by telling the police or the Mayhew Animal Home; unless you too want to be visited by Karma every night too!!

I always give people the benefit of the doubt in my job and always try to be non-judgemental but in this case there is no excuse for the way this dog had been left. Someone must have seen the state that Prince was in and you would have had to have been blind to not see how this dog was suffering.”

Mayhew vet, Gen Wilkinson, said:

“This is an absolutely horrifying case of cruelty and neglect. Prince was severely dehydrated and had irreparable neurological damage, meaning that he was unable to move his back legs or tail and was doubly incontinent.

He was suffering immensely and this had been going on some time. He was also very underweight and tried to eat when we offered him food despite being so weak.

After shaving his matted hair we discovered maggots burrowing into the pressure sores on his body which had been caused by his low weight. “OH dear lord, maggots burrowing into his pressure sores, it must have taken months for him to become like that…somebody owned that sweet dog; yet left him to starve!!”

The only decision we were left with was to bring his life to a peaceful end but he should not be forgotten.

Someone must know who Prince belonged to”. “Someone does know who this beautiful sweet soul belonged to, & if they don’t want the same done to another animal or worse; I suggest they ease their conscience by telling the police or The Mayhew Animal Home. I’m sure it can be done in complete confidence!”

The Mayhew’s Head of Marketing, Alison Morgan, said:

“This case is certainly one of the worst cases we have seen, which is why we need to take action and urge the government to push ahead with compulsory micro-chipping for all dogs. If Prince had been microchipped we would have had a better chance of finding out who was accountable for his neglect”.

Just one of the main news story:-

One of the worst cases of pet neglect and cruelty seen by the Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green

An animal charity is appealing for help to find the heartless owner of a dying dog found dumped in Roundwood Park.

The elderly German Shepherd called ‘Prince’ was found collapsed, surrounded by dumped rubbish, litter and a filthy mattress and was initially assumed dead when he was discovered last Friday (12).

He was taken to the Mayhew Animal Home in Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green, where he was found to be covered in his own faeces, his coat was matted into hard rocks of hair and he was too weak to lift his head.

The 13-year-old dog was wearing a collar with his name but not microchipped.

Due to the severity of his condition he sadly had to be put to sleep.

Price’s plight is one of the worse cases of cruelty and neglect of a pet seen by the charity in its 126-year history.

Gen Wilkinson, a vet at the Mayhew, said: “This is an absolutely horrifying case of cruelty and neglect.

“Prince was severely dehydrated and had irreparable neurological damage, meaning that he was unable to move his back legs or tail and was doubly incontinent. He was suffering immensely and this had been going on some time. He was also very underweight and tried to eat when we offered him food despite being so weak.

“The only decision we were left with was to bring his life to a peaceful end but he should not be forgotten. Someone must know who Prince belonged to”

The Mayhew is urging anyone with information about Prince’s owner to come forward.

They are also asking people horrified by this case to sign their petition, calling for compulsory microchipping for all dogs and for the government to push ahead with this in response to the DEFRA consultation. “See petition link above or below”

Zoe Edwards, the Mayhew’s animal welfare officer, said: “When I initially saw Prince I thought he was dead. He was lifeless, filthy and the smell coming from him was like sewage.

She added: “I really don’t understand the mentality of some people. This was obviously someone’s pet who loved them enough to once get him a decent collar and have his name engraved on it. Pathologist suspects people killed 50 seals on P.E.I.: Necropsy Confirms Seals Bludgeoned To Death

Comments Off on Pathologist suspects people killed 50 seals on P.E.I.: Necropsy Confirms Seals Bludgeoned To Death

A gruesome discovery of over 50 dead and bloodied Grey Seals at Murray Harbour has sparked international outrage with demands that the perpetrator/s be brought to book.

Please sign the petition below & read the details of the Necropsy; the human animals that did this brutal slaughter, must pay!

A P.E.I. wildlife pathologist says he suspects that people are behind the deaths of more than 50 grey seals that washed up in Murray harbour last weekend.

Fisheries officers have sent samples of the dead animals to a wildlife pathologist at the Atlantic Veterinary College. (Name withheld by request)

Pierre-Yves Daoust, a wildlife pathologist with the University of Prince Edward Island, says students from the school found the seals on the province’s eastern shore Saturday, just a day after seeing them healthy in the same area.

He says he suspects the seals were killed by people as they were found with wounds on their bodies, but he is carrying out necropsies to rule out the possibility of infections or other natural causes of death.

Daoust, who works at UPEI’s Atlantic Veterinary College, says it would be highly unusual to have such a large number of seals die so quickly of natural causes.

He says the results will be passed on to investigators with the Fisheries Department in about a week.

Justice for the seals bludgeoned to death at Prince Edward Island

Postmortem results conducted by wildlife pathologist Dr. Pierre-Yves Daoust confirm that the seals, many of them still nursing and just a few weeks old, were bludgeoned to death by having their skulls smashed in with a blunt object. Several seals managed to survive this savage and unprovoked attack only to suffer further agony by freezing to death.

We are offering a R5 000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator/s.

SAVE THE SEALS: May this video touch the hearts of those who are still not aware of the senseless and brutal killing of seals all over the world and convince them to raise their voices AGAINST this unforgivable and utterly atrocious practice of heartless humans! Like ALL living beings on earth, seals deserve to LIVE their lives in peace and harmony, without humans interfering and destroying them for their own egoistic gain.

The song, “Alright”, is written and performed by Louise du Toit and arranged by Louise du Toit, Spiros Papaspirou and Edmund Diolulu, with lyrics by Louise du Toit. “Alright” was produced at Horizon Studios in Athens and the digital mastering was done at Abbey Road Studios in London. Video produced and created by Louise du Toit in Greece, 2010. This video was made as a contribution to the salvation of seals, for nonprofit educational purposes, without any intention of commercial advantage or private financial gain. Human Branding To Protest Animal Cruelty

Comments Off on Human Branding To Protest Animal Cruelty

ANIMAL rights activists in Britain plan to brand themselves in a painful public protest against the dairy industry.

Volunteers will line up to be scarred for life by a searing hot iron in a symbolic act against cruelty which they claim plagues the global dairy sector.

“If one person goes away and researches a vegan lifestyle because of this it will have been worth it,” demonstration organiser Becky Folkard, 34, told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.

“We’re taking a huge risk because so many people will see what we’re doing as extreme but in the past you had suffragettes, which was hugely controversial.”

Ms Folkard, who will not be branded herself, said two women and a man had so far volunteered to be branded, to object to the dairy industry which she described as an “animal holocaust”.

On March 21 in London the trio will be permanently marked with the number 269, which represents the ear tag sequence on calves featured in a pro-animal film documentary.

A similar protest has already been staged in Israel, the Mirror reported.

Mother and daughters starved Staffordshire bull terrier until it was so hungry it ate its own bed

  • RSPCA inspector could see the animal‘s hips, ribs and spine protruding
  • Dog called Akita was caged in a room surrounded by its own faeces
  • The dog digested its bed which was made of plastic

A mother and her two daughters starved a Staffordshire bull terrier until it was so hungry it was forced to eat its own bed.

Diane Martin, 55, Amy Martin, 21, and Chloe Martin, 22, kept the dog, Akita, caged in a room surrounded by its own faeces.

The dog was discovered emaciated and with overgrown claws in September last year by the RSPCA.

It had been digesting its own bed – which was made of plastic – and plastic was found to be in its faeces.

Inspector Virgina Ross visited the family home in Tottenham, north London, to check on the pet’s condition.

She found a baby gate had been placed across the door of the room to prevent the dog from escaping from the foul-smelling room.

Ms Ross could see the animal’s hips, ribs and spine protruding from underneath its fur, Highbury Corner Magistrates heard.

An RSPCA inspector discovered Akita, pictured, emaciated and with overgrown claws in September last year

Prosecutor Mark Jones said: ‘It was frantic to get out of the room. There was child gate across the door which the dog was trying to climb over.’

He added that there was a soiled bed for the dog in the middle of the room which was covered in faeces, and that there was no clean space for the animal to get some respite.

Chloe told the inspector that Akita had belonged to her sister’s ex-boyfriend and that he had left it with them.

She admitted that she had been concerned about the conditions it was being kept in, saying: ‘I wouldn’t like to live like that.’

Mr Jones said the intention had been to sell the animal which had been looked after before Amy and her boyfriend split up.

The defendants then ‘turned a blind eye’ to Akita’s care and neglected her for a month until she was taken away by Ms Ross on September 18.

A forensic veterinary surgeon examined the dog and found that she weighed just 5.7kg – almost half her normal body weight.

He added that the dog was so desperate to find food that it had started trying to digest her bed. Mr Jones said: ‘Whilst at the surgery the animal was passing plastic in its faeces.

‘What the vet is saying is that this dog was eating abnormal matter. It is a common finding in dogs that have been deprived an adequate diet and were so hungry they would eat anything.

It doesn’t get any worse than that.’ He added: ‘Quite frankly, if left any longer the dog might have died.’ By November last year, Akita’s body weight had increased to 10.65 kilos and she has a new owner.

Sisters: Amy Martin, left, and Chloe Martin, right, who both had a duty to care for the dog

Addressing Amy Martin, chair of the bench Anita Morgan said: ‘We find in this that you were the most culpable.

‘This was a dog that was left in your care, but you were already a dog owner, so you understand about dogs.

‘You purposefully treated this dog in an appalling way while looking after another dog.’

Ms Morgan told Chloe and Diane Martin that although they also had a duty to care for Aikita, the bench did not feel they had been primarily responsible.

Amy was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment, suspended for a year, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

She was also banned from owning or keeping a dog for five years.

Chloe, who is four months pregnant, was given a 12 month community order and made subject to an 8pm to 6am electronically monitored curfew for eight weeks.

Their mother was given a 12 month community order and ordered carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.

The mother and daughters, from Tottenham, each admitted one count of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, and two of failing to fulfil the duties of a person responsible for an animal’s welfare.

They were each also ordered to pay £100 each towards court costs.
