GRAPHIC VIDEO; WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES IN THE UK…Why no ban yet?? Please help!

Comments Off on GRAPHIC VIDEO; WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES IN THE UK…Why no ban yet?? Please help!

“Please, if you care about wild animals being exploited for entertainment & money, take action & send an email to the links below; I don’t know about you, but I am sick of being hoodwinked! The BRITISH Government are stalling for some reason, whilst other Countries (even those known for their poor welfare of animals) have managed a ban….why not England?? All those in government need to watch the video at the end of this post, even though posted in 2010, little has changed, for animals are still being beaten into submission by cruel trainers, taking their own frustrations out, on sentient beings, who can’t speak about the abuse. Circuses are interested only in the money their animal performances bring in, which brings horrific suffering to those entrusted to entertain…THE ENGLISH GOVERNMENT HAVE TO HONOUR THEIR PROMISE OF A BAN ON WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES ASAP…I only feel total empathy & sorrow for those sentient beings left, like horse & dogs etc. Who will still suffer the abuse, confinement & training of circus life; it’s heartbreaking to see horses with stereotypical behaviour!”

“All circus animals live a life of abuse, confinement & constant beatings (often for no reason, other than the trainer feels like letting off some personal steam) just to entertain the public…which is simply not right & should be banned ASAP! Personally I don’t think any animal wild or domesticated animal, should be used & abused for monetary gain; all animals should be banned from circuses!! They don’t belong in solitary confinement, with repetitive beatings… simply going stir crazy, because they are so distressed… pacing back & forth in cramped cages, no animal deserve to suffer this stereotypic behaviour??PERIOD!”

“I would so love to see those who beat the animals, get a taste of their own medicine! But then, as is usual, any animal that attacks a human (irrelevant of the constant beatings it has endured over the years etc) will ultimately be shot; can no one see why these animals attack? They are mentally broken, beaten & humiliated….I wouldn’t blame any animal that struck back at its human trainer….perhaps if the animals were not so scared of the beatings, there would be more!!

“Those who watch the video & or still choose to go to circuses etc; are on the wrong blog! There is nothing here for those who don’t understand the suffering these sentient beings endure, at the hands of humans! If you have no interest in helping animals & sticking up for the voiceless…PLEASE…bog off from my blog!!!”

The Born Free Foundation has been working steadily for many years for an end to the use of wild animals in circuses.

No Animal Should Be Used and Abused For Entertainment

No Animal Should Be Used and Abused For Entertainment

In the UK, we participated in a government-convened Circus Working Group in the late 1990s and again in 2006. We have investigated and exposed the treatment of wild animals in circuses on many occasions, and helped to relocate animals from circuses to better conditions.

Numbers of circuses with wild animals and the number of wild animals used by circuses have declined in recent years but we consider that a ban on wild animals in circuses across the UK is long overdue. travelling circus environment simply cannot provide for the needs of wild animals.

For the latest on the progress towards a ban in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, please see our news items.

URGENT! – ASK CAMERON AND CLEGG TO BRING CURTAIN DOWN ON WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES

Dear Supporters and Friends

I was shocked when I discovered that the ban on wild animals in travelling circuses in England was not mentioned in the Queen’s Speech in June 2014. I am sure you are as disappointed as I am.  But I will certainly not give up.  There is still a slim chance that the Government could make the dream of a ban a reality – but I need your immediate help.

It is vital that the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister hear from compassionate citizens as a matter of urgency and I am, therefore, asking you to take 5 minutes to contact them, urging them to ensure that a ban is introduced by Government as a priority.

The key points to make in your letter or email are:

  • The Government made a commitment to bring in a ban on wild animals in travelling circuses in England in March 2012, and has repeatedly confirmed their commitment ever since.
  • There is now a very limited window of opportunity for the government to make good on its promise of a ban within this session of Parliament. Parliament is scheduled to be dissolved at the end of March 2015.
  • Draft legislation to ban has already been introduced in Parliament. This legislation is not considered to be controversial, has the overwhelming support of Parliamentarians, and could progress quickly through Parliament.
  • There is strong public support for a ban which would be a quick and easy “win” for this Government.
  • Any delay in bringing in a ban in England could reduce the chances of bringing in bans in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
  • Leading animal protection organisations including the Born Free Foundation, RSPCA, the Captive Animals’ Protection Society, and the British Veterinary Association are all agreed that a ban is long overdue.
  • Quite simply, a ban is the right thing to do in a compassionate society that cares about animals and we must not let this opportunity be lost!

Ugliest Show On Earth

Uploaded on 7 Apr 2010 – ANIMAL DEFENDERS INTERNATIONAL.

The Ugliest Show on Earth report (USoE) and video chart the findings of an 18-month study and investigation into the use of animals in circuses – the most comprehensive study of animals in circuses ever undertaken.

Between 1996 and 1998, ADI undercover Field Officers worked in 13 UK animal circuses and winter quarters, and 5 foreign circuses which were exhibiting animals supplied by UK circus animal suppliers and trainers.

The team of five people involved in the undercover work made observations totalling 7,280 hours. Over 700 hours of videotape was recorded, with nearly 400 hours of this being used in evidence for the prosecutions which followed the publication of the report and release of the video programme of the same name.

The video highlights the main findings of the study and is probably most famous for the shocking scenes of brutality to elephants and chimpanzees at Mary Chipperfield Promotions in Hampshire, UK. These scenes allowed ADI to issue summonses for cruelty to animals which were subsequently taken over by the UKs Crown Prosecution Service, and convictions for cruelty were secured against Mary Chipperfield Cawley, her husband Roger Cawley, and their elephant keeper, Michael Steve Gills.

Northern Irelands Only Horse Slaughtering House Stops

“This might just be about the shortest post I have ever done, but it’s certainly one that’s made me the happiest, hence the slideshow of noble equines! Just a shame more can’t follow suit!! “Seriously, look at the beautiful, graceful equines below; then tell me why anyone; would want to eat one?? I’d bet every breed of horse below, has gone to a slaughterhouse, somewhere in the world; often looking as good as they do in the pictures! It’s not just the old & sick horses they slaughter, they want nice fit, healthy horses too!!”

THE only approved horseslaughtering house in Northern Ireland has stopped killing horses, the Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill has revealed.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

She explained that the Armagh plant asked the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to remove its authorisation and stopped killing horses at the end of January.

“There was one slaughter plant in County Armagh approved by the FSA for equine slaughter,” she explained.

“This establishment is also approved for the slaughter of cattle and sheep. It ceased slaughtering horses completely on 25th January 2013 and has asked the FSA to completely remove their authorisation to slaughter equines.”

She said this was the only establishment approved by the FSA to slaughter horses in Northern Ireland in recent times.

WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO (Click to watch) – The Humane Slaughter Myth

Comments Off on WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO (Click to watch) – The Humane Slaughter Myth

“Firstly let me just say the video is not on auto play, to watch it you must click play”

“I’m disgusted at the way these workers treat these sentient beings…To make the slaughter process better, people have to join together TO WANT to make changes. I don’t eat meat but for those that do, I’m sure you too would prefer the animal to have been properly stunned & slaughtered. What you see in the video is blatant abuse, the workers enjoy inflicting pain on the animals, it must make them feel more manly…FFS…I wish they would also only have one animal at a time in the stun room, the other poor animals have to watch, not nice is it? Lets make some changes, stand up & be heard, sign the petition below”.

SLAUGHTER CAMPAIGN ACHIEVEMENTS

Our call for CCTV to be installed in all UK slaughterhouses is endorsed by the Chief Executive of the industry’s regulator, the Food Standards Agency, and by the RSPCA, Compassion in World Farming and the Soil Association.

Although the government has been reluctant to encourage slaughterhouses to install CCTV, ten supermarkets – Morrisons, Waitrose, the Co-op, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Tesco, Lidl, Asda, Marks & Spencer and Iceland – along with wholesalers Booker, have now agreed to deal only with slaughterhouses that have independently monitored CCTV cameras installed. We are now working with the supermarket chains to ensure that the CCTV footage is monitored properly and that incidents of law-breaking are dealt with effectively.

One slaughterhouse – A&G Barber – has closed permanently as a result of our exposé, and legal action was started against nine workers and four slaughterhouse operators. But, in September 2010, DEFRA decided to drop all these cases, offering no convincing explanation for its decision. Animal Aid embarked on a long battle to reverse this decision to bring the abusers to justice, which culminated in two men being jailed for burning pigs with cigarettes and beating them with excessive force and frequency.

Bristol University is using our footage to train vets and Soil Association inspectors. The industry, government agencies and veterinary bodies are now taking part in ongoing discussions about how to implement changes and bring about improvements in animal welfare in slaughterhouses.

Most importantly, perhaps, the horror of slaughter has been brought to the public’s attention through our footage and through articles in the print media and on television. Many people have seen the reality and chosen to adopt a meat-free diet as a result.

Published on 15 Nov 2012 by

Animal Aid started to film secretly inside Britain’s slaughterhouses in January 2009. To date, we have filmed inside nine randomly chosen slaughterhouses and found evidence of cruelty and lawbreaking in eight of them.

The problems are serious and widespread. Our films reveal animals being kicked, slapped, stamped on, and picked up by fleeces and ears and thrown into stunning pens. We recorded animals being improperly stunned and going to the knife while still conscious. Even where no laws were broken, animals still suffered pain and fear.

And ‘high welfare’ plants, such as those accredited by the Soil Association, were no better than the non-organic ones. Animal Aid believes that whether ‘conventional’, organic, kosher or halal, all slaughter is unnecessary and immoral, and the only way to prevent such suffering is to choose a meat-free diet.

We are calling for CCTV to be installed in all UK slaughterhouses and for the footage to be made available to independent parties outside of the slaughterhouse. We also want better independent training, regular retraining and assessment, rigorous enforcement of the laws. We also believe that people with outstanding convictions for violence or animal cruelty working should fail the ‘fit and proper person’ test and should not be issued a slaughter licence. Finally, we want people to see the shocking truth from inside UK slaughterhouses and choose a humane diet.

CCTV In Slaughter Houses

The welfare of animals at slaughter is a devolved issue, so we are lobbying each of the four GB countries to introduce a new regulation under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (England and Wales); Section 26 of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006; and Section 11 of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

When the government refused to act, Animal Aid and our supporters lobbied the supermarkets to insist on CCTV in all their slaughterhouse suppliers. The ten largest, along with wholesalers Booker, agreed, and committed to having CCTV installed by the end of 2011.

This means we have a voluntary scheme in which an estimated 80 per cent of slaughterhouses are covered. But it is only a voluntary scheme, and in order to ensure that supermarkets and slaughterhouses do not have a change of heart, CCTV must be installed in all slaughterhouses.

Animal Aid continues to work with politicians and officials in all four GB countries and is encouraged to see progress. But there is still a long way to go.

Dog set on fire – Man arrested over animal cruelty attack in Maghaberry

Comments Off on Dog set on fire – Man arrested over animal cruelty attack in Maghaberry

“I was just about to post the original story (I’m still behind) when I saw they had arrested an animal…anybody that sets a dog on fire for their own sadistic pleasure & entertainment can’t be called human!! I hope it’s not long before they find the other one, if indeed their were 2 of them who committed this heinous attack. But, I doubt very much he will be charged & receive the maximum 51 weeks in jail; abusers rarely do! It will probably be 20 weeks & possibly a fine, or both…I know what I would like to do to the cowardly little SXXT & I’m betting I wouldn’t be the only one!”

Police investigating an attack in which a dog was set on fire in County Antrim have arrested a 21-year-old man.

A three-year-old collie dog, called Cody, suffered serious injuries after it was doused with flammable liquid and set alight in Maghaberry nine days ago.

The PSNI had appealed for information about two men who were seen with the dog on Trummery Lane, close to a quarry at about 10:00 BST on 26 August.

The man was detained on Tuesday morning on suspicion of animal cruelty.

Police investigating an attack on a dog in Maghaberry have issued descriptions of two people they want to question.

The three-year-old collie dog was doused with flammable liquid and set on fire

The three-year-old collie suffered serious injuries after it was doused with flammable liquid and set alight on Maghaberry Road on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said two males were seen with the dog at 10:00 BST.

One is described as having dark hair and a faint moustache.

He was carrying a bottle of Buckfast and is said to have had an aggressive demeanour. Both are said to be of thin build with broad shoulders and between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in tall.

The second person is thought to have been carrying a white plastic bag.

Police believe they may have been at a house party in Maghaberry the night before, and have appealed for anyone who may recognise the descriptions to contact them.

He described the attack as “inhumane” and said the dog is “fighting for its life”.

I was up at the north coast on Saturday and came home to a pretty horrific story of a good friend of mine who lives at the bottom of the village of Maghaberry,” he said.

“Unfortunately his dog, a wee collie called Cody, was set on fire using lighter fluid on Sunday morning.

“I think it is just vandalism of the nastiest sort. “The dog is as friendly as they come. “Hopefully the poor thing can pull through.”

Mr Ferris said the owner of the dog had two small children and that the incident was “pretty disturbing” for the whole family.

“Getting your dog set on fire is a terrible thing to wake up to on a Sunday morning,” he added.

Mr Ferris said he hoped those responsible for the attack would be caught.

Seven men and a woman face animal cruelty charges

Comments Off on Seven men and a woman face animal cruelty charges

Six members of the same family have appeared in court along with others charged with almost 200 counts of animal cruelty.

Samuel and Cathy Kirkwood, from Parkgate Crescent, east Belfast, appeared with their sons: Chris, Ryan, Wayne and Gary, from Island Street.

Two other men also face charges.

The group appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court to face almost 200 charges of animal cruelty

They are Daniel Scott from Tower Court and Jamie Morrow from McAllister Court, Belfast.

The charges follows a police operation at the Kirkwoods’ home and other addresses in November.

A number of dogs were taken away by the USPCA in the operation.

Officers also removed equipment, mobile phones and computers from the house and an adjoining yard.

On Thursday, the defendants faced a range of charges at Belfast Magistrates Court, including causing unnecessary suffering to animals, attending animal fights, having equipment to be used in animal fights, photographing and video recording animal fights and disturbing a badger sett.

Questioned by a defence solicitor, a detective constable confirmed that some of the dogs seized have since been destroyed but she said an expert had confirmed they were the same animals seen on seized video footage of fights.

PETITION: For LENNOX! tell Eukanuba and Purina Dog Chow to pull their support from the Belfast Kennel Club Dog Show on September 29-30th 2012

Comments Off on PETITION: For LENNOX! tell Eukanuba and Purina Dog Chow to pull their support from the Belfast Kennel Club Dog Show on September 29-30th 2012

On September 29th and 30th, the city of Belfast in Northern Ireland will host the much anticipated World Cup Dog Show. Much of the event will be sponsored by Purina Dog Chow and Eukanuba and will draw the attention of dog-lovers worldwide.

However, in light of some recent tragic events, many question whether Belfast is truly an inappropriate city to host the show.

There was as global outrage earlier this month when the Belfast City Council (BCC) ignored over 200,000 petitions from animal rights activists and executed a six-year-old Labrador/American bulldog mix named Lennox. The BCC had seized the dog in 2010, claiming that Lennox’s unpredictability made him a threat to the general public.

However, Lennox’s owner, Caroline Barnes, maintains that Lennox merely had anxiety issues and was generally a loving pet, forming a close bond with her young daughter. Nevertheless, citing new Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) – a law permitting the automatic destruction of animals that threaten public safety – the BCC sentenced Lennox to death.

In order to seek justice for Lennox, and to take a stand against Belfast’s unreasonable BSL legislation, sign the petition requesting that Eukanuba and Purina Dog Chow pull their support from the event.

There are still two months left for these main sponsors to select an alternative city for the show – it should be a city that treats all of its animals with respect rather than killing them arbitrarily. Take action in honor of Lennox!

Please sign the petition for Lennox

Death by canine profiling

Comments Off on Death by canine profiling

Humans have been racially profiled by authorities since the judicial system was put in place; now dogs are being profiled just as humans have been, and these dogs are sentenced to death because of their looks.

Tony an 8 year old pit bull, sharpie mix from Arizona, was euthanized last month after judge Grace Nabors handed down his death sentence with a “smirk on her face,” according to Trish Snow, Kelley Wales and Jennifer Randell, the friends of Michelle Dozier, Tony’s owner, they were at Tony’s sentencing supporting Dozier and Tony.

In 2011 a neighbor accused Tony of killing her 14 year old Chihuahua, according to the veterinarians report the Chihuahua did have deep puncture wounds to the abdomen which led to its death. Because of Tony’s age, his canines had all been broken so he could not leave deep puncture wounds.

Judge Nabors ignored all evidence the defense presented because of Tony’s pit bull, sharpie mix, she found him guilty before the trial could start.

According to Snow, “From the moment the hearing began, the judge, literally, had a smirk on her face when the attorney was pleading Tony’s case. I knew what the verdict would be in the first five minutes, I’m sorry to say. I ran out of the courtroom prior to the attorney, basically, calling out the judge on her unfairness. The attorney was angry because the injustice in the air was so thick you could have cut it with a knife!”

King a 3 year old pit bull from Noblesville, Indiana was accused by the family’s neighbor of attacking her dog. The veterinarian could not find any damage or wounds to her dog. After the neighbor kept calling authorities, Kings Owners were fined and had to appear before a judge.

According to King’s Owner, “The judge said that, all pit bulls are born vicious and will always be vicious and no amount of evidence I could bring him would prove otherwise. He gave me the maximum fine, ordered me to pay her bogus vet bills and the court costs, and has the intension to euthanize King. He gave me 90 days from June 13th, to prove king is no threat, however he said if any incident occurred again he would kill him.” King’s owner went on to state “He considers an incident anything my neighbor says happens even with zero proof.”

Breed Specific dog laws (BSL) is just another way of canine profiling and is becoming a worldwide problem that is growing at an alarming rate.

Duke an 18 month old dog, was taken from his owner Jon Smilie. The police seized Duke because of the way he looks.

In Australia two young family dogs called Bear and Kooda, were deemed to be Pit Bulls by authorities and seized September of last year and put to their deaths last month. Nathan Laffan and Samantha Graham lost their fight to save their two dogs. The two beloved pets were put down because of the way they looked.

In the recent and most famous case of BSL profiling, Lennox the dog from Northern Ireland, was found guilty by the Belfast City Council (BCC) for no other charge than the way he looked. Lennox was imprisoned for two years and the BCC would not allow his family any contact even on the day the BCC killed him.

The cases of BSL and the profiling of authorities, even when there is no breed specific legislation in place, could fill the Library of Congress. There is no large or medium breed of dog safe when it comes to canine profiling, and your dog could be the next one that is profiled.

Save Lennox Campaign Fails After Belfast City Council Put Down ‘Dangerous Dog’

Comments Off on Save Lennox Campaign Fails After Belfast City Council Put Down ‘Dangerous Dog’

“I never thought I would have to say this, I only wrote about you this morning! R.I.P Lennox…I’m so sorry you had to leave without the loving arms of your owners, wrapped tightly around you. I’m so sorry your life was taken, you were not a dangerous dog, just never forget, many fought for you, your were not alone. Now, I’m sure you have crossed Rainbows’ Bridge & feel better to be away from the concrete jail they kept you in for 2 years. Run wild & free like the wind…you will always have your happy memories of your family…that, nobody, can take from you!”

Belfast City Council have confirmed that ‘death row’ dog Lennox has been put down.

Despite campaigners waging a lengthy battle to save the seven-year-old pet, the council ruled that Lennox was “an illegal pit-bull terrier type” and should be destroyed for public safety.

A statement from the council on Wednesday morning confirmed his death:

“The dog Lennox, an illegal pit-bull terrier type, has been humanely put to sleep. This was in accordance with the Order of the County Court which was affirmed by the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal.”

“Whilst there is an exemption scheme to which dogs of this type (pit-bull terrier type) may be admitted as an alternative to destruction, there were no such measures that could be applied in this case that would address the concerns relating to public safety.

“The Council’s expert described the dog as one of the most unpredictable and dangerous dogs he had come across,” the statement added.

Worldwide protests were held in Lennox’s honour around the world after his owner Caroline Barnes announced last week that she would no longer be fighting to save her pet. The Save Lennox Facebook page has over 100,000 “likes” and a petition to save the dog has over 200,000 signatures.

A candle-lit vigil for the dog was held outside Belfast council buildings last night, and on Tuesday the First Minister of Northern Ireland waded into the row, urging the council to reconsider killing the pet, instead suggesting that the dog should be re-homed.

Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, and Victoria Stilwell, host of ‘It’s Me Or The Dog‘ , had offered to pay the expenses to relocate Lennox from Northern Ireland and bring him to the US to a sanctuary and freedom.

Belfast City Council have received a number of angry emails after the publication of Lennox’s plight. The dog was confiscated from his owners more than two years ago after Belfast council officials judged the dog to be a breed banned under the UK’s Dangerous Dog Act (DDA).

The council warned against members of the public engaging in abusive behaviour following Wednesday’s statement, writing:

“Over the past two years, Council officials have been subjected to a sustained campaign of abuse including threats of violence and death threats. The Council has been in ongoing contact with the PSNI in relation to that.

“The Council regrets that the court action was necessary but would emphasise that the safety of the public remains its key priority.

A statement from Lennox’s owners was posted on the Save Lennox Facebook page last night. It read:

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all again for your messages of support. We are sorry to say at the present time Belfast city council seem to be intent on killing our boy.

“Despite previous assurances otherwise, we have been denied the opportunity to say goodbye. We have also been told that we cannot collect his body and bring Len home. We have been informed however that we will receive ‘some’ ashes in the mail.”

Family of Lennox releases official statement on doomed dog’s fate

Comments Off on Family of Lennox releases official statement on doomed dog’s fate

“I am lost for words, this innocent dog has done nothing wrong! Some jumped up little jobsworth decided Lennox fitted the credentials of a pit bull, so was removed from his loving family in 2010! I refuse to put R.I.P until the family confirm it on their Facebook site, link below…I’m still praying someone will pull him at the last moment!!”

Despite a brief moment of possible hope on Monday for the incarcerated Belfast, Northern Ireland dog named Lennox, it appears that the Belfast City Council intends to proceed with his destruction.

Lennox as a puppy

The official “Save Lennox” Facebook page has just released a solemn statement about Lennox’s fate:

Official Statement From Lennox’s Family:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all again for your messages of support. We are sorry to say at the present time Belfast city council seem to be intent on killing our boy. Despite previous assurances otherwise, we have been denied the opportunity to say goodbye. We have also been told that we cannot collect his body and bring Len home. We have been informed however that we will receive “some” ashes in the mail.

The news is a devastating blow to thousands of supporters from across the world who are both stunned and outraged that a dog, innocent of any wrong-doing, will be destroyed.

Sadly, based upon the family’s statement, there is even further reason to believe that Lennox may have been killed already – hence the officials’ refusal to budge on their ruling..

Lennox has been held by officials in Northern Ireland since the time that he was seized by the authorities back in May, 2010.

The only reason that Lennox was taken on that fateful day was based on his appearance and the belief that he fit the profile for that of a “pit bull type” of dog.

Killing Lennox is a travesty of justice for anyone who believes that a dog should be judged based upon their behavior as opposed to their appearance.

Three in court over badger baiting

Comments Off on Three in court over badger baiting

THREE MEN HAVE appeared before a court in Co Down today after they were arrested by PSNI officers on suspicion of animal cruelty.

The men, aged 19, 21 and 42 have been charged with animal cruelty offences concerning the unnecessary suffering of a terrier dog and a badger. They have also been accused of interfering with a badger sett.

The BBC reports that the men were ordered by the judge to desist from hunting activities and to maintain a 9pm-7am curfew. A fourth man due in court could not attend for medical reasons.

The arrests were made in connection with the UK-wide Operation Meles, which aims to disrupt badger baiting activities.

What is badger baiting?

Badger baiting is a bloodsport in which badgers are hunted from their setts and pitched against dogs in a fight. It usually ends with the death of the badger, though the dogs can sustain serious injuries in the fight.

Sometimes, baiters cause serious damage to the badger by crippling it or breaking its jaws to prevent injury to the dogs.

Badger baiting is illegal in the UK and in the Republic of Ireland, and it is illegal to interfere with a badger sett.

Baiting is quite widespread across Northern Ireland, with thousands of badgers being killed this way ever year, according to David Wilson of the USPCA.

“The people who are involved and doing the damage are generally criminal gangs from urban situations who go out into the environment,” Wilson told TheJournal.ie. “Badgers are strange creatures: they will stay with a sett for hundreds of years and for generations, so they’re not hard to find. These people will open the setts a bit with spades and sent small dogs down to seize the badgers.

“They don’t even care about the danger to their dogs. Badgers are extremely powerful animals and some of the injuries on the dogs are beyond life-threatening – they just have to be put to sleep.”

He said that anyone who suspects badger baiting is happening should contact the police immediately.

Culling

There is a badger cull in place in the Republic of Ireland as part of the Department of Agriculture’s efforts to tackle TB in cattle. However, some researchers say there is little evidence of culling having an effect in the eradication of bovine TB.

Conn Flynn of the Irish Wildlife Trust told TheJournal.ie that a 12-year study in the UK found that culling badgers has no significant contribution to cutting the level of bovine TB. Instead, culling can force the highly-territorial animals to flee and spread into other areas, potentially spreading the disease.

The study found that cattle measures are the best way of controlling the disease, but there are restrictions on vaccination cattle due to export regulations.

Flynn says that a study is underway in Ireland to examine the effects of the oral vaccination of badgers.

He also says that tackling badger baiting is very difficult for gardaí, but that it happens all over the state and the Trust has received a number of reports of baiting in Meath and Offaly in particular.
