The white tiger has been a frequent sight at rallies for the political party Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz – but died following 30C heat
But vets could not save the animal, which belonged to a party worker, and it died yesterday morning.
Live tigers and lions are a familiar sight to those at PML-N’s rallies. Last week a complaint was made to the Election Commission but it said the matter did not fall under its remit, reports Dawn.
The World Wide Fund for Nature said white tigers are extremely sensitive to heat and noise and that the animal could not cope with Lahore’s 30C heat and the noise of the rallies.
The WWF said it is supporting a petition by actor and conservationist Faryal Gohar at the Lahore High Courtagainst the illegal use of wild animals at rallies.
The brutal but lucrative contests are organised by powerful local landlords. They own and train the dogs, which are also victims of this ‘sport’, encouraging ferocity in attack situations.
The bears are owned by Kalanders – traditional bear owners –who are paid by the landlords to bring the bears to fight.
Bear baiting is banned by the Pakistan Wildlife Act and contravenes Islamic teachings, which forbid the baiting of animals.
Taking action
WSPA and member society the Pakistan Biodiversity Research Centre (PBRC) have helped to dramatically reduce the number of bear baiting events in recent years, by:
Campaigning to bring awareness of international opposition to the ‘sport’ to the Pakistani authorities.
Working with the Pakistani government and wildlife officials to halt the fights and look at alternative livelihoods for bear owners.
Monitoring the numbers of captive bears and pushing for prosecution.
Building the Kund Park sanctuary, providing a home for confiscated bears.
Educating potential spectators through a mobile phone awareness unit and religious teachings. Our anti-bear baiting message has been delivered in over 9,000 mosques to a potential audience of over 1 million people.
Calling for greater action to prevent illegal bear cub poaching. A Pakistan-wide educational programme has raised awareness of the issue.
Support our work
Thanks to your help, WSPA has tracked down and stopped many bear baiting events. We’re getting closer to ending this brutal blood sport altogether.
But there is still much more work to be done.

A dog’s mouth is bloodied from bear baiting
The dogs, which are also at risk of injury, are groomed to be extremely aggressive. Their ferocity is a matter of pride for the owner, who reaps the financial rewards of the baiting, which is illegal in Pakistan.
The crowd knows that the tethered bear is suffering a further handicap. Its claws and teeth will have been removed – an agonising mutilation for which anaesthetic is rarely used.
The ‘contest’ lasts for three rounds. As the dogs are encouraged to attack, the bear will tire and weaken, until it is unable to remain upright.
This is when the bear’s face and neck become vulnerable to the dogs’ teeth.They hang from the bear’s mouth and lips as they try to drag it to the floor. If they succeed, the dogs ‘win’ the round; if the bear stays on its feet, it has ‘won’.
Bears sustain more injuries than dogs in these savage stand-offs, suffering ripped noses and mouths. The dogs’ jaws, clamped around the bear’s nose, are prized apart using sticks.
Most bears are permanently scarred, but the killing of either animal is avoided – they are too valuable. The bears live on to suffer further at the hands of their owners.

I have some wonderful news to share with you – Sammy – the bear featured in a recent WSPA appeal – has now been rescued from the cruel blood sport of bear baiting.
Sammy (pictured before her rescue) is now safe from harm and recovering in the WSPA-funded sanctuary in Pakistan. Her life of fear and violence is over and a new life of peace, safety and wide open spaces is just beginning.
To mark this new beginning, Sammy has been given a beautiful new name: Yarrow, which means healing.
Because of WSPA supporters like you, she will have a safe and peaceful life in the sanctuary. Thank you

2 more bears rescued from a life of bear baiting in Pakistan :- WSPA’s partner group BRC have rescued two more bears from the bear baiting industry and brought them to Balkasar to start a new life. The bears are now in quarantine and will be released into a large enclosure when their injuries have healed.

Partner group BRC took her in September 2012 after her owner gave her up as part of the alternative livelihood programme. Also known as “bear baying” by some, is a very cruel & barbaric show for sick sadistic pervert persons..an event where participants release their pit bull dogs to attack a tethered, captive bear, who has had his claws and some of his teeth cut off, leaving him totally defenceless .The poor bear is so terrified, that he pee’s in fear when he hears the dogs barking and rushing at him…you can imagine why, because he can’t defend himself as usually with no teeth and no claw’s and beside that he is chained and can only move around 5″ ft!

Bear baiting is a terribly cruel and inhumane blood sport that for the most part still persists in the Punjab and Sindh regions of northern Pakistan. Even though it has been illegal in Pakistan since 1890 — through the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act — routine bear baiting events are still being held in the name of public entertainment. It is especially prevalent in the rural tribal regions.
At a typical bear baiting event, a bear is tethered to a post in the middle of a stadium. The rope or chain is between 2-5 meters long. The bear’s claws have been blunted, his/her canine teeth removed and a nose ring inserted. At least two dogs are then let loose to attack the tethered bear.The dogs are removed when the bear submits; this is seen when the bear rolls on the ground to avoid further attack by the dogs. The bear is forced to do this up to as much as ten times per day.
The average life expectancy of a wild bear is 20 years. Bears used for bear baiting have significantly shortened lives to 5-7 years at best.
BEAR BAITING:-
Of all the ways in which bears are mistreated around the world, the medieval sport of bear baiting must be the most barbaric and obscene.
The setting of pit bull terriers against bears inflicts appalling suffering on both animals. This activity, which was once widespread in Europe, is now only found is rural parts of Pakistan. Thankfully, after five years of campaigning, there are signs that bear baiting will be banished from this last strong hold.
Bear baiting has been illegal in Pakistan for more than 100 years, but WSPA’s first investigation, undertaken in 1993, found evidence of 80 different contests involving 300 bears.
Pakistan wildlife expert Inayat Chaudry, who undertook the survey, uncovered for the first time a network of hunters, wildlife dealers, gypsy bear owners and land owners which enabled bear baiting to thrive. And he revealed how the bears, whose teeth and claws were removed, were virtually defenceless against an onslaught from as many as eight dogs in one day.
Blood Sport:-
Historically, bear baiting was popular in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, who was so fond of the sport she overruled Parliament when they attempted to ban bear baiting on Sundays. The practice was introduced to south Asian cultures by British colonizers in the mid-nineteenth century.
While the sport is illegal in Pakistan, it persists to this day. Land owners, called landlords in Pakistan, arrange bear baiting at village fairs.
Bear cubs are taken from the wild and held in captivity in small cages. Without adequate care and sustenance, the bears live lives of misery. Of course, the fight is manipulated in favour of the dogs because the bears are tied to a post and have their sharpest (canine) teeth removed and claws filed down to prevent the bear from adequately defending him/her self against the dogs.
“The physical and mental trauma these bears have endured means they will never be able to experience life in the wild.We need to provide them with the space, care, treatment and nourishment that they will need for the rest of their lives,” said Jan Schmidt-Burbach, WSPA’s Wildlife Veterinary Programmes Manager.

Bob Ilffa, from the Wheatbelt town of Newdegate, made the comment as the industry braced for an ABC Four Corners program on the recent inhumane slaughter of about 22,000 Australian sheep in Pakistan on health concerns.
The sheep were in limbo for over a month after they were rejected in Bahrain, but further health fears in Pakistan led to them being brutally killed – in some cases buried alive – in two stages.
The culls came after repeated proof by independent veterinarians that the sheep were healthy.
The Fremantle-based exporter Wellard expressed shock when the second cull was ordered on October 20, despite promises from local authorities a day earlier that the remaining sheep would be slaughtered humanely.
The pledge came after the company agreed to drop a court injunction seeking to overturn the government-ordered cull.
Wellard immediately suspended exports to Pakistan, which had only ever been considered a contingent market.
Sheepmeat Council of Australia said it was an isolated, unusual turn of events that led to a totally unacceptable outcome.
But Mr Iffla went a step further, saying he would never send sheep to Pakistan again.
“There’s no way my sheep will ever be going to Pakistan,” he told AAP on Monday.
Mr Iffla said he was in agreement with animal liberationists in calling for the Pakistan market to be snubbed, but did not believe an end to live exports elsewhere was feasible, given the need among many nations to secure protein via imports.
He said he was extremely disappointed with the way the sheep had been killed, especially considering a modern abattoir was readily accessible.
Instead, the animals were clubbed and had their throats roughly slashed in a dusty feedlots.
“Pakistan has done the wrong thing by the industry,” Mr Iffla said.
“It’s absolutely appalling behaviour by the Pakistanis, who I don’t believe we can continue to deal with (the country) because it’s just going to wreck the whole live animal trade.”
Mr Iffla said his sheep were currently breeding so another wave of lambs was on the way, but after that, he would rethink his business, producing less meat or even focusing on agriculture. “I don’t know where we’re going,” he said.
“I’m certainly thinking of changing my program to some degree because if we can’t make the profit out of live sheep in the manner that we have been, we’re going to have to diversify into other areas.”
The Queensland Greens reiterated calls to ban live exports, saying it was not within Australia’s power to control what happened to livestock once they were outside the country.
Greens Senator Lee Rhiannonwants the federal government to end the trade through the Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill 2012, but that appears destined to fail in the Senate.
Labor senatorGlenn Sterle last month said the Greens were suggesting that with abattoirs back in the north and a boxed meat market in place, everything would be “tickety-boo”.
Mr Iffla also said Australia should stop providing aid to Pakistan because of the cull.

Today, every MP in Australia needs to hear one important message: The actions of the world’s largest live exporter, Wellard, have contributed to Australia’s worst live export disaster. They must be held to account and lose their export licence.
How did it happen? When a shipload of 21,000 sheep was rejected by Bahrain, Wellard had no legitimate contingency plan (despite this being a requirement of their export permit). They considered two options: 1. Kill the animals at sea and dump their bodies overboard; 2. Pakistan — a country that didn’t even have government approval to take sheep when the ship left Australia.
To avoid another disaster at sea, the Australian government fast tracked Pakistan’s approval to receive the sheep. But there was a glaring omission in this plan. Wellard failed to ensure that the Pakistan Government were willing to import a shipment that had been rejected by Bahrain over disease concerns.
Whether the animals were healthy or not became irrelevant — the Pakistan Government felt they had been deliberately deceived. Local authorities ordered the animals be culled, and Wellard lost complete control. Deemed ‘unfit’ for human consumption, and without economic value…
These animals were treated like worthless rubbish. Animals were dragged, beaten, their throats were sawn at with blunt knives before they were thrown into mass graves — some still alive hours later.
The Australian government has admitted that it’s beyond their control to prevent another ‘Pakistan’. MOUs with importing countries, to prevent shipments being rejected, have failed. Regulations to prevent cruelty on the scale seen in Indonesia last year, have failed.
What is profitable has never been the defining argument between right and wrong in any civilised society. It is offensive to the majority of caring people that profit continues to be used as justification for a trade that has been responsible for such suffering and cruelty.
Please urgently call on your federal MP and the Minister for Agriculture (Joe Ludwig) to ensure that Wellard loses their export licence for their role in this disaster. Importantly, please also remind your MP that you will not vote for a party that supports live exports.

Eidul Azha saw a 10 to 12 per cent increase in the number of animal sacrifices in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad this year, according to the Pakistan Butchers Welfare Association (PBWA).

Talking to The Express Tribune, PBWA President Khurshid Qureshi said the reason behind this increase is that people who could not afford sacrificial animalslast year opted to buy shares instead.
He said that last year, around 50,000 animals were slaughtered in Islamabad, which grew to 55,000 this year. Meanwhile, last year Rawalpindi saw around 100,000 animals slaughtered on Eidul Azha, while this year the number increased to 112,000.Qureshi said that the rise in collective sacrifices caused a decline in the number of smaller animals like goats and sheep slaughtered.
Meanwhile, like every Eid, butchers increased their rates on Eidul Azha. Last year, butcherscharged Rs2,000 to Rs3,000 for slaughtering a goat or a sheep, while this year they asked for Rs2,500 to Rs4,000. The rate for a bull last year was Rs8,000 to Rs10,000, while this year it increased to the Rs9,000 to Rs12,000 range, depending on the size and weight of the animal, said Qureshi.
Oddly, there was a decline in the prices of animal hides.
In past years, the hide of a goat sold for up to Rs 600, while this year, the price range was Rs200 to Rs300. Similarly, lamb hides sold for Rs500 to Rs1,100 last year, while they only fetched a return of Rs400 to Rs600 this time. Bull hides sold for Rs2,000 to Rs4,000 last year, fell to Rs1,600 to Rs2,800 range.
Mohammad Sharif, who has been a leather trader for the past 10 years, said, “Compared to last year, we received more hides, but due to the lower prices we did not earn the profit we expected.”
According to him there is a certain mafia who decrease the prices for its own self interest.
A bomb strapped to a donkey killed at least eight people and wounded twenty others in Central Orakzai Agency Thursday, Geo News reported.
According to initial reports, a remote-controlledbomb strapped to a donkey blew up as the animal entered a small bazaar of Hassan Zai Darra, killing at least eight people and injuring 20 others, a senior local administration official said.
Another local official confirmed the incident and casualties.
The injured were rushed to Kalaya Head quarter Hospital while the severely injured were shifted to Kohat and Peshawar hospitals.
Security forces have kicked off the search operation after the blast.

A pack dogs rush the bear, barking, biting and lunging at it. Frightened, the bear rears up on it’s hind legs, and has to use its strength to fend off the dogs, swinging at them.
The bear suffers bites and gashes, but the real trauma is the psychological trauma of a ceaseless set of attacks that last for hours.
In fact, some bears are prone to attacks for four hours as nearly 100 teams of dogs are set upon the bear in rapid succession. The bear…may endure this treatment every weekend throughout much of the year.
Surrounded by throngs of onlookers, many who travelled hundreds of miles to take part in the despicable spectacle.
As countries around the world ban events such as bullfighting and cockfighting,Pakistan and South Carolina (USA), are two remaining places that haven’t criminalized the practice. Sign the petition today to help put an end to this “sport”.

Contact the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SC DNR). Let them know that you are a South Carolina resident and that you oppose the practice of bear baying. Ask them to use their power to prohibit the practice. A reasoned and respectful plea, in your own words, will have the greatest impact.

Contact your legislators in the statehouse. Whether bear baying is active in your community or not, our state leaders need to hear a clear message from their constituents – South Carolinians do not agree that bear baying should be legal.
Saheli was given to Pakistan as a gift from the Sri-Lankan government in 1991. She was a beautiful gentle beast who made a place for herself in all our hearts. Every one of us possibly has a childhood memory with her. Sadly though, on Tuesday, at the age of 22, Saheli passed away. She had been sick for months but was not treated till her health had deteriorated to the point of no return. Some say she was injured while others say she was poisoned. What instigated a protest and now this petition was the unnatural death of an elephant at the Islamabad Zoo. A female elephant named Saheli died at the young age of 22 because she was not looked after.
A minor foot injury coupled with neglect and improper medical treatment led to her falling to the ground and dying a few days later. Vets were not contacted till after her health has deteriorated to a point of no return. Let’s not let the loss of her life be in vain.
The Islamabad Zoo has on many occasions been the target of controversy. Animals have mysteriously disappeared or died, or been sold off to private collectors. This must be stopped.
We’re demanding for:
Zoo Management should be rotated
Citizens should be given more control over what goes on at the zoo. There should be a body that monitors all activity and accepts complains
Better treatment of the remaining male elephant. REMOVE HIS CHAINS
Transparent management and accountability for animal cruelty
Updates on animal count and health status on a social platform such as Facebook
Enquiry into all animal disappearances

ISLAMABAD (AP) — With a police officer wounded and the presidential palace breached, the Pakistani capital has launched a fresh offensive against a uniquely feared enemy in the Muslim country – the city’s ever expanding population of wild boar.
Each night, packs of the hairy beasts emerge from Islamabad’s river beds, parks and scrubland to rifle through the overflowing rubbish bins of its mostly wealthy residents and growing number of restaurants.
City authorities are laying poison and have announced free hunting permits to cull the wild pigs‘ numbers. But to make sure residents don’t get caught in the crossfire, they only allow shotguns. There have been few takers. Hunters are wary of getting arrested by the police, or even worse – getting mistaken for a terrorist.
The animals can weigh up to 180 to 220 pounds (80 kilograms to 100 kilograms) and have razor sharp teeth. Adult males come armed with upward curving tusks. While they scurry off at the site of humans, they charge when cornered, alarmed or wounded and are a major cause of traffic accidents in the city.
The latest chapter of man versus hog played out in a city center police station last week.
“Someone shouted ‘watch your back’ but before I could look round the animal had hit me,” said Sajjad Hussain, who was on duty when the animal slipped in past the high, razor wire-topped blast walls after guards opened the gates to let in a car.
Hussain had a gash in his stomach that required eight stitches and is on medical leave.
