EU: Polish attorney general wants probe into halal, kosher slaughter

Comments Off on EU: Polish attorney general wants probe into halal, kosher slaughter

Polish Attorney General Andrzej Seremet has asked the Constitutional Tribunal to review whether halal and kosher ritual slaughter violates the country’s animal treatment laws, local media reported Friday.

Seremet said the Agriculture Ministry violated the constitution when it allowed halal and kosher slaughter houses to kill animals without stunning them first, as is required by Polish law.

Animal rights activists asked Seremet to review the issue, saying the methods were cruel and caused animals unnecessary pain.

Muslims and Jews kill animals for meat in ritual slaughter with a single quick cut to the throat that they believe minimizes the animal’s pain and suffering.

There are some 20 slaughter houses in Poland that kill animals using halal and kosher methods to provide meat for the country’s small Muslim and Jewish communities and for export to countries like Turkey and Israel, TVN 24 reported.

President Bronislaw Komorowski has spoken up against Dutch plans to outlaw the practice, which he said “targets the Muslim and Jewish community.”

European Union laws require animals to be stunned before they are killed, but make an exception for ritual slaughter.

Meanwhile, according to Polskie Radio today, in Poland, the country’s attorney general, Andrzej Seremet, has submitted an application to Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal after a number of non-governmental organizations claimed that the Ministry of Agriculture had “exceeded its legal rights” in creating an exception for ritual slaughter from the requirement that animals be stunned before they are slaughtered.

Kosher and Halal slaughter unconstitutional in Poland?

Comments Off on Kosher and Halal slaughter unconstitutional in Poland?

Poland’s Attorney General says the practice of Kosher and Halal ritual slaughter violates the nation’s animal protection act.

Andrzej Seremet has now submitted an application to Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, a supervisory judicial body that resolves disputes in the country’s laws, so that the matter can be reviewed.

Seremet was requested to investigate the matter by a number of non-governmental organisations including the Viva! Animal Rights Foundation.

According to Polish law, animals must be stunned prior to being slaughtered.

However, when butchering animals to create halal meat, Muslims traditionally follow the rite of killing the animals with a single cut to the throat, with no stunning beforehand.

The same process is applied by Jews so as to create kosher meat.

Although Polish law holds that animals must be stunned before being slaughtered, an exception in the law allows this to be waived where ritual slaughter is concerned.

Robert Hernand, spokesman for the Attorney General, told the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily that the Ministry of Agriculture had “exceeded its legal rights” by adopting this exception.

Nevertheless, during the Conference of European Rabbis in Poland in 2011, President Bronislaw Komorowski appeared to defend the practice by speaking out against Dutch plans to outlaw ritual slaughter.

Poland’s head of state said the Dutch bill “targets the Muslim and Jewish community” and represents “a crisis of tolerance” in Europe.

At present, an EU directive on animal slaughter calls for stunning prior to the kill, but the directive allows for exceptions where ritual slaughter is concerned.

Sweden has banned outright kills made without the animal being stunned beforehand, as have non EU states Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

Holland has yet to pass legislation on the matter.

Stray dogs of Kiev rounded up and slaughtered for making Kiev look untidy for Euro 2012

Comments Off on Stray dogs of Kiev rounded up and slaughtered for making Kiev look untidy for Euro 2012

01 June 2012

Stray dogs are being rounded up and killed in the run up to Euro 2012 so that Ukraine can look spick and span for visiting foreign football teams and supporters.

Campaign: a dog sits beside a poster during a protest by animal rights campaigners against plans to put stray dogs to death

Animal rights activists found animals were being shot, poisoned and hanged by “street cleaning” squads — with some even being taken to crematoriums and feared incinerated alive.

The slaughter, which in the last year is believed to have resulted in the death of more than 12,000 animals in Kiev alone, is allegedly continuing despite government promises to end the barbaric practice and build animal shelters.

Tamara Tarnavska, of local charity SOS Animals, said that these public pledges meant nothing as her network of investigators were still finding daily cases of stray dogs being culled.

“In Kiev they are poisoning them, and some are even shot,” she said. “The poison can take up to six hours to kill the animals so we believe some are very possibly being taken to crematoriums and burnt while not yet dead.

“I challenged the Mayor of Kiev and he admitted some people were still killing strays. Outside the capital the situation is even worse. Last year in Lisichansk there were mobile incinerators roaming the streets.”

Ukraine, which is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Poland, has spent £6.6 billion preparing for the tournament. The animal rights charity Peta, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, found the dog-killing programme was focused on the four cities hosting matches, with approximately 7,000  allegedly being killed in Donetsk alone.

Dogs not immediately killed were being taken to the municipal animal shelters and left to languish in ramshackle enclosures with no protection from the elements, the group’s German branch announced this month.

Rounded up: these are some of the lucky dogs as volunteers save them from the ‘hit squads’ patrolling the streets of Kiev

Ukraine is spending hundreds of millions of euros building shiny new stadiums but it’s the dogs on the streets who are paying the ultimate price for the country to play host to Euro 2012 matches,” a Peta spokesman warned.

But one international animal welfare organisation is attempting to help the dogs.

A convoy of 11 animal rescue vehicles from the Four Paws organisation arrived in the city in March with a group made up of vets and activists from more than 12 countries.

The team is working in mobile clinics to carry out a wide scale neutering and vaccination programme for the strays.

Dogs that are neutered are also given vaccinations, anti-parasite treatment and health checks.

Ukraine’s environment minister announced a ban on the further killing of dogs following a campaign by animal activists against the practice at the end of last year.

He subsequently pledged £2.5 million to build 200 new shelters to house the country’s estimated 500,000 strays as well as a four-month sterilisation programme.

SOS Animals said it had never received the sum promised to its shelter and reported there had been no sign of the sterilisation programme being instigated. It is claimed dead dogs’ coats are made into hats and their bones ground down for animal feed.

The Ukrainian government said it was seeking ways to enforce the moratorium on dog killing and has warned that city mayors who disobey the directive will be punished.

Lodz Zoo Break-In Leaves 2 Giraffes Dead In Poland

Comments Off on Lodz Zoo Break-In Leaves 2 Giraffes Dead In Poland

WARSAW, Poland

Two female giraffesat a zoo in central Poland died after vandals broke into the facility, and officials said Tuesday they are trying to find a companion for their last remaining giraffe – a male.

The break-in at the zoo in Lodz city occurred Saturday night, and the unidentified hooligans overturned signs and threw benches and garbage cans into animal runs, including one near where the three giraffes were.

Barbara Wicinska, a zoo official, said one of the female giraffes was found dead early Sunday, and a post-mortem showed she had died of stress. The other female giraffe was found dead early Monday. A test is planned, but zoo officials believe she died for the same reason.

The head of the zoo’s breeding section, Wlodzimierz Stanislawski, said management is checking with other zoos in Europe to see if it can find a companion for Tofik, the widowed male giraffe. Like his two dead companions, Tofik is from the endangered Rothschild giraffe subspecies.

“It is a tough task because there are not many Rothschild giraffes in zoos, but we will try to fill in this sudden gap,” Stanislawski said.

Meanwhile, city authorities and the national Animal Guard watchdog organization have offered a 5,000 zlotys ($1,500; euro 1,100) reward for any clues that help find the hooligans.

Investigators also are trying to find out why the zoo’s security guards didn’t call police until hours after the hooligans left the facility, which is not equipped with CCTV cameras.

Help Stop the Mass Dog Killings in Ukraine – Please Sign Petition

Comments Off on Help Stop the Mass Dog Killings in Ukraine – Please Sign Petition

The 2012 European Football Championship is just about to start, and the host countries, Poland and Ukraine, have been busily preparing for a surge of sports tourism. In Ukraine, that means shocking efforts to reduce the number of homeless animals across the country in an attempt to hide the country’s neglected and abandoned dogs from tourists.

Animals are poisoned, shot, and, in some cases, even burned alive. Authorities in Lysychansk, Mariupol, and other Ukrainian cities use a cremation truck, which has even advertised on national television. The animals are caught and then shot or anesthetized and thrown directly into the cremation truck!

Even the Union of European Football Associations, which PETA Germany contacted in 2009, sharply criticized the cruel practices of Ukrainian authorities and offered financial support to animal protection advocates to neuter animals. Ukrainian authorities have reacted to the efforts of animal rights advocates with repressive measures: They have put pressure on animal activists to stop the international protest!

What You Can Do

Please help the animals in Ukraine and support our protest against the mass killing of homeless dogs. Sign the petition to ask the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States to speak out against the cruel killings and push for humane animal birth control!

Sow stalls are cruel and inhumane. Yet, across Europe, millions of pigs spend around 300 days a year inside these metal cages – right from the start of each pregnancy up until the week before they give birth.

A complete ban on the use of sow stalls is long overdue. And, in the EU, from 1st January 2013 it will be illegal to use them except for the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. This is a massive step forward for pig welfare.

But this momentous law is in grave danger.

The Polish Government recently revealed that they believe over 2,000 of their pig farms will not comply on time, leaving thousands of pigs suffering illegally inside cages. We simply cannot allow this to happen.

We are now asking supporters to write to the main farming organisations in Poland urging them to ensure their members are aware of the ban and are taking action accordingly. Poland looks set to have more than twice the number of non-compliant farms than any other EU nation, so please take action to help turn this shocking situation around.

Please complete your details below and send your plea to Poland’s farmers today:

Skaryszew In Poland – Horses for Slaughter

Comments Off on Skaryszew In Poland – Horses for Slaughter

We have already published the photographs of our visit to Skaryszew, in Poland, and now we present our video, which documents this big horse market, a market which sends many horses for slaughter in Italian abbatoirs.
The images (some filmed with hidden cameras) do not contain scenes of overt cruelty, they rather simply tell of the suffering of thousands of horses exploited by man, treated without dignity and condemned to a miserable end.
We can choose to change this situation: speak out to put an end to horse slaughter.

The images (some filmed with hidden cameras) do not contain scenes of overt cruelty, they rather simply tell of the suffering of thousands of horses exploited by man, treated without dignity and condemned to a miserable end.

“The horses are scared, just look into their eye’s, their body laungauge, see the scars on their sides, but the men don’t care, they are sold for sausage meat, burgers, no, no they don’t care for them”

We can choose to change this situation: speak out to put an end to horse slaughter.

” These horses are often transported in trailers much too small for them to stand, you can clearly see a white van that has been used to bring horses; WTF transports a horse in a transit van; nobody that values that horse or loves it, that’s for sure!

Although a van is better than a flimsy box on wheels, I can’t believe how little they value these sentient beings. It’s winter & the people are all wrapped up…not the horses…we have had no snow here where I live, but my horse is out in rugs daily as it’s bloody cold”

“See the little Shetland at the end, he could easily have got entangled in that rope, he was obviously distressed…the poor paint at the end of the video, did you see the hooves??”

“OMG…it breaks my heart to know these beautiful equines may already be on someone’s plate…I mean come on…WTF wants to eat a horse

Irena Sandler

I received an email today,  about Irena Sendler,  I can not lie, I had never heard of her. But after reading the email & checking out her history, I wanted to fulfil the wishes of the original author of the email  & post it to as many people as I could; of course posting on here is an excellent way of reminding others what she stood for & what she did.

Irena Sendler was born in 1910 in Otwock, a town some 15 miles southeast of Warsaw. She was greatly influenced by her father who was one of the first Polish Socialists. As a doctor his patients were mostly poor Jews

In 1939, Germany invaded Poland, and the brutality of the Nazis accelerated with murder, violence and terror. Irena and her helpers created over 3,000 false documents to help Jewish families, prior to joining the organized Żegota resistance and the children’s division. Helping Jews was very risky—in German-occupied Poland, all household members risked death if they were found to be hiding Jews, a more severe punishment than in other occupied European countries.

As an employee of the Social Welfare Department, she had a special permit to enter the Warsaw Ghetto to check for signs of typhus, something the Nazis feared would spread beyond the Ghetto. During these visits, she wore a Star of David as a sign of solidarity with the Jewish people and so as not to call attention to herself.

She cooperated with others in Warsaw’s Municipal Social Services department, and the RGO (Central Welfare Council), a Polish relief organization that was tolerated under German supervision. She and her co-workers organized the smuggling of Jewish children out of the Ghetto. Under the pretext of conducting inspections of sanitary conditions during a typhus outbreak, Sendler and her co-workers visited the Ghetto and smuggled out babies and small children in ambulances and trams, sometimes disguising them as packages. She also used the old courthouse at the edge of the Warsaw Ghetto (still standing) as one of the main routes for smuggling out children.

Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids).  She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.  The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.  During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely.  Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.  After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family.  Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize.   She was not selected.

President Obama won one year before becoming President for his work as a community organizer for ACORN  and Al Gore won also — for a slide show on Global Warming….yeah go figure!!

Wstępy – Skaryszew. (my apologies I meant to post this last month)

The Horse Market is an event with hundreds year old tradition which is based on the privilege to organize horse market in Skaryszew given to the city by The King Władysław the IV in 1633.

Traders and butchers of the whole Poland come there every year. Traders and butchers from foreign slaughterhouses come as well (mainly from Italy).

During the Horse Market, which is organized once in a year fortunately on the first Monday of Lent, no one fasts.

Treasurer of the Municipal Council: End the horse market in Skaryszew, Poland.

(see the way the horses feet are tied together & his head is tied tight to the truck, disgusting)

On Sunday already, preparations are in a full swing – for the First Monday of Lent – fat dishes are prepared – fat sausages, bacon, bigos (traditional polish dish) and lard so mob could eat away the taste of it. The fat drips on traders’ chins and sea of vodka is everywhere and everything is to the rhythm of folk music! There is nothing like Lent in the most Catholic country in the world.

Sales of horses accompanied by aseries of cultural events, showing the heritage and traditions of the region, swish of whips, patter of the hooves. Horses know exactly that their days are numbered.

The date of the event (First Monday of the Lent), place (horse market is situated on the streets of the town so young lads can see cultivated in our nation tradition of drinking vodka, gluttony, and so called ‘ love’ for animals) left out of tradition.

Nothing left out of the respect for horses who have been the pride of this country since ages. Nowadays, horses are calculated in kilograms in Skaryszew unfortunately…

Usually, there are about 1000 – 1500 horses are exhibited to the slaughterhouses and about 10.000 people involved in this event. Most of them are drunk, not enough to mention the children watching the hell organized by humans to these beautiful, proud and wise animals.

“Wstępy” (it is a regional term for horse market) are ‘the proud of Skaryszew’ – it is the biggest in Poland and surely in Europe annual hell for horses.

The long distance goal is to legitimize horses as pet animals (companion animals), and the same abolition of treating horses as animal slaughter.

For this purpose we have created this petition on the ban on killing polish horses for slaughter:

The will of the Polish Nation, we demand:

– provision in the Act according to Animals – “a horse is a pet animal accompanying human being”

– absolute prohibition on breeding of horses for slaughter

– absolute prohibition on killing horses in polish slaughterhouses

– absolute prohibition on transportation of horses from Poland to foreign slaughterhouses.
