She should be swinging around a vast green expanse with her family, but instead Masha is being forced to wiggle along holding an umbrella and basket of flowers. But a life in captivity means she is used to it and today the 11-year-old brown bear is taking part in a circus dress rehearsal. Masha is one of four bears who have completed a three year training programme in Russia as part of a travelling troupe.

Parks trainings of hunting dogs (called “Pritravochnye stations“) See video above! are places where hunters can train their dogs using wild animals as prey, such as wild boars, bears and wolves and smaller animals such as raccoons,foxes, badgers and rabbits.
The dogs risk almost nothing! People pull out teeth and claws of the wild animals so they can’t hurt their hunting dogs during the trainings with these wild animals. (Their teeth and claws are removed as a precaution) but these poor wild animals are suffering to death, they are scared, they are super stressed (and sometimes are dying of stress or injury) they are living in constant fear – says a veterinarian Semen Sereda. These animals are bitten dozens and hundreds of times. Experts say it is possible to make this process more humane, for that you need to change the law ..
Dogs can train every day, costing to the owner 300 rubles. (about $ 7) per session. The dog has ten minutes to bite the animal and that the maximum…but for the small animals it usually finishes with animal death!
It becomes impossible to the wild animal to fight back. They don’t even try to fight back because they are so terrified..of being abused. These people if the teeth are not been removed put a wood stick into the wolf’s jaws-mouth so they can’t bite.
They chain the bears so the bear can’t more than one feet. They also taking rabbits cubs, foxes and badgers and put them into a special “tunnel” so they can’t run away; and leave the mad dogs rushing on them inside the tunnel (as pictured/video below)
There are about ten parks trainings dogs in Moscow region. But across Russia they are hundreds of them; each of these parks operate legitimately. Because any law prohibiting such existing operating in Russia. The workouts dog parks bring in families with children and their guest, advertising is everywhere: on roadsides, in newspapers, on the Internet.
But there is also an much more gruesome underground “illegal parks” which is very well known by regular confidential customers .. Illegal parks whose advertising does not exist; but only from mouth to mouth…at the request of the customer if he wishes, his dogs can torment a chained boar or a chained bear until it dies .. (a kind of bear baiting till the death follows)

In civilized countries, taming animals clearly perceived as a bad taste, and most Europeans prefer circuses without violence. In Russia, unfortunately, circuses with animals are considered traditional entertainment and trainers continue to spread the myth of the humanity of their profession.
But once all the secret becomes clear! To dispel the myth of humanity circuses with animals we had a unique investigation, first implemented in Russia. During the year (2012-2013) cameras recorded the event in one of the typical circus, which was set up to work activist “Vita”.

Objective: To complete the legislative ban on the use of animals in circus acts in Russia
The use of wild animals in circuses and other entertainment events associated with the forcible seizure of their natural, natural habitat, they are denied the most expensive – of liberty, forced to perform various tricks against their will, all in the name of entertainment, fun and comfort of man.

After a video showing violent killing of horses in a Russian slaughterhouse was posted to YouTube last month, an online petitionhas been launched to ask for stopping the cruelty.

The video, posted on February 26, bears the title “Russian Race Horses Brutally Slaughtered for Sausage” and comes with the warning of having very graphic content. The video description reads: “The world needs to see the extreme brutality horses are suffering in Russia.” Horses in the video are shown hammered on their heads repeatedly with sledgehammers inside the slaughterhouse as they drag themselves about the place.
“This is the most inhuman act I have ever witnessed,” reads the petition letter on Change.org, addressed to the Delegation of the European Union to Russia. “Every horse slaughterhouse I’ve seen has been violently abusive and this is beyond comprehension.”
The petition has received close to 9800 signatures to date and aims at getting over 10, 000 more to reach its goal of 20, 000 signatures in support of the cause.Earlier this month, Seattle Pi published a story about animal rights advocates’ condemnation of the recent legislature in Oklahoma that would allow the slaughter of horses for human consumption.
As noted by the Activist Post, producing horse meat has legally remained banned inthe US since 2007, though early this month it was reported thatUSDA was set to allow horse slaughter in the US, starting with a New Mexico horse slaughterhouse in the next few months.

When long time animal advocate, Julie Jo saw the video, she immediately decided to make a petition; due to the horrific & brutal content. Where ever this slaughter-house is in Russia, something has to be done & fast…hence the petition & FB Event. Horses have always been a part of my life, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy to watch the video…it took me several attempts, to actually look at the screen, the audio was bad enough. “The quality of the video isn’t very good (which I’m thankful for) this could suggest, the video may have been taken several years ago; it is also very noisy. One can see several horses, in a concrete building, some stood around waiting to be slaughtered, others already down & bleeding out. Other horses not yet unconscious or down, are trying to get back up, yet slipping in all directions; due to the blood soaked floor of their fellow equines. Men wait with sledgehammers or axes (turned to use the wooden part of the head) for the next horses to be walked in. There are horses waiting near what looks like a gated area, who are in full view of what is happening! There appears to be no order or process to the system, nobody is wearing aprons, gloves or the usual attire associated with a legal slaughter-house; this could mean this is not a legitimate slaughter-plant.”
“The bewildered & frightened horses, are each lead to one of the heartless bastards, who with little thought or aim, uses brute force to smash the sledgehammer or axe into the horse’s head. There is no skilled technique, nor restraints used, to hold the horse’s head still. Horses being flight animals, constantly shift position, trying to escape the blow’s of the hammer. One of the horses with a rope around its neck, is wrapped around a post & pulled tight, the horse can be heard gasping as the rope around his neck gets tighter, he can’t move as freely now, so another aim is taken. Few go down with the first poorly aimed blow, which results in the dazed & confused horses, trying to take flight again. They try in vain to stand, only to be repeatedly bludgeoned about the head, until they go down. The second they are down, their throats are slit; meaning they could still be fully conscious, when bled out!”

People who know and love horses are especially aware of what sensitive, social and intelligent creatures they are, which makes the appalling actions shown in this clip all the more reprehensible.
We are getting in touch with our contacts in Russia to make them aware of the practices reported to be taking place in slaughterhouses there and ask for improvements.
We would strongly encourage you to also contact an animal welfare society which is based in Russia and approved by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).

France‘s Council of State on Wednesday granted a reprieve for two zoo elephants who had been ordered put down because of their suspected infection with tuberculosis, to the delight of Brigitte Bardot and other animal rights campaigners.
Bardot, who had threatened to quit France for Russia if Baby, 42, and Nepal, 43, were put to sleep, called for the pair of pachyderms to be put into the care of her animal welfare foundation.
“They are old ladies,” Bardot said in a statement welcoming the ruling. “Now we have to find them a suitable place, take care of them if necessary and leave them in peace.”
Baby and Nepal have faced an execution order since last year, when municipal officials in Lyon decided they had almost certainly been infected with TB and warned they could be a threat to the health of other animals and visitors to the Tete d’Or zoo in the city.
After a nationwide outcry and a string of temporary reprieves, the Council of State on Wednesday finally lifted the threat of execution by ruling that it was unclear that having the animals put down was the only way to prevent the risk of further infection.
In light of that, the execution order could be illegal and was likely disproportionate to the actual health risk, the court, which rules on disputes arising from administrative decisions, concluded.
Baby and Nepal’s fate has been clouded since August 2012, when another elephant, Java, died at the age of 67 and a post mortem revealed she had been suffering from TB.
The order for the two younger elephants to be put down followed in December but animal rights activists had maintained there was no certainty that they were definitely infected.
“It is a great relief,” Bardot said. “We do not have the right to have animals put down as a precaution. It is disgusting. Baby and Nepal have been isolated for more than two years, they don’t represent a threat to anyone.”
Bardot’s threat to move to Russia had come in the wake of her actor friendGerard Depardieu‘s decision to accept a Russian passport after being criticised by the Socialist government for taking up residence in neighbouring Belgium for tax reasons.

Will Travers, Born Free CEO, is saddened by today’s vote at the Bangkok meeting of CITES, which soundly rejected a proposal to increase protection from commercial trade for the polar bear, imperiled by the impacts of climate change.
This species, completely dependent on sea ice for survival, has seen its number s fall to around 20,000-25,000 in recent years. This has in part been caused by a dramatic decrease in the extent of both winter and summer sea ice (showing a reduction of up to 20%) over the past 30 years, exacerbated by hunting for domestic and international trade amongst other factors.
Found in just five countries in the circumpolar region (Canada, Denmark (Greenland), Norway, Russian Federation, and the United States), this species has caught the attention of the international community in recent years as the story of their decline has become common knowledge.
So, what will CITES Parties do to increase its protection and offer a life line to the world’s largest and best known bear species…WELL NOTHING!!!!
The precautionary principle, on which this proposal was largely based states that ‘where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation’.
So what this means is that if we are not sure of the effects an action is having, better to stop and reassess rather than proceed, possibly past the point of no return.
Today however, the Parties to CITES unfortunately threw precaution to the wind and voted not to increase global protection through greater trade restrictions despite the numerous current and ever looming threats to this species. It remains to be seen how this will contribute to the polar bear’s demise
Polar bears are inquisitive, flexible and opportunistic, adept at exploiting their Arctic habitat. Global warming is considered to be polar bears’ greatest threat and causes ice to melt earlier and freeze later.
Bears have less time to hunt, have a longer summer fast and wait longer to resume hunting, causing loss of condition andpotential conflict situations when hungry bears come in contact with people. Meanwhile in captivity, intelligent and adaptable polar bears can suffer particularly badly in zoos, circuses and marine parks.
Polar bears are dying. As global warming accelerates, the sea ice they depend on for survival is literally melting away. Bears are starving and drowning as they have to swim farther and farther to reach solid ice. Some are even turning to cannibalism in a desperate search for food. Those trapped on land hundreds of miles from the nearest ice often wander near villages in search of food and are shot.
As if that weren’t enough, oil and gas drilling is destroying and polluting their fast-dwindling Arctic habitat.
A third of all polar bears — including all bears in Alaska — will be extinct by 2050 if current trends continue.The rest of the species will be gone by the end of the century.
But it’s not too late to save the polar bear if we join together and take immediate action. The science is clear. We know what needs to be done — we just need to build the political support to do it.

An international conference of 178 member nations of an environmental group opts to allow trading of polar bear parts to continue.An international ban on trade in polar bears has been banned because of fears it would distract from the bigger threat of global warming. The proposal put to representatives of the 178 member nations of the Convention on International Trade In Endangered Species (Cites) had divided conservationists. They all agreed that the main risk to the world’s largest carnivorous land animal came from habitat loss but differed over whether international trade also put the bears at risk of extinction. Polar bears, widely seen as the animal on the front line of global warming, are predicted to be hard hit by melting polar ice caps. But the debate at the Cites meeting in Bangkok focused on the additional threat to the species posed by international trade. “The polar bear is facing a grim future, and today brought more bad news,” said US delegation head Dan Ashe who warned the polar bear population could fall by two-thirds by 2050. “The continued harvest of polar bears to supply the commercial international trade is not sustainable.” The ban was rejected by 42 votes to 38, with 46 abstentions among the nations who participated in the poll in Bangkok – the proposal needed a two-thirds’ majority support to be passed.
Polar bears are prized for their skins – particularly in Russia – as well as other body parts such as skulls, claws and teeth and their are strict controls over their international trade.
About half of the roughly 800 polar bears killed each year end up in the international trade, mostly wild bears from Canada, according to expert estimates cited by the US.
The US, Canada, Russia, Denmark (Greenland) and Norway are home to a global population of 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears.
The WWF, which chose to oppose the ban in favour of concentrating on global warming said “habitat loss from climate warming, not international trade, is the primary driver” of an expected population decline.
Canada, which hosts the largest portion of the global population of polar bears and is the only country that still exports polar bear parts, opposed a ban, citing the need to preserve the traditions of the Inuit, an indigenous minority living mostly in the north of the country.
“The polar bear advances strong emotion. It is an iconic symbol of the Arctic,” said Canadian delegate Basile Van Havre. In a National Geographic article entitled ” We import belugas for display ? “Virginia Morell disagrees with the idea that aquariums need more beluga whales in captivity. “Those who are in captivity now go stale, perhaps alone, and die. Replacing them will cause damage and distress to otherwhales, which are torn from their families, who live very well in the natural environment, “said Virginia.
She describes for readers the life that belugas lead in their natural homes:
“Whales are highly sociable and gregarious. They make long journeys of migration, they have an impressive range of communication and, as the Dolphins (distant relatives), are able to use this feature in a variety of ways, including imitation of each other (a newly published study shows that the belugas can even mimic human). They like to hang out in the summer, shallow coastal waters, in large groups (sometimes gather in thousands) formed by close relatives – mothers, fathers, babies, aunts, uncles and cousins. Sometimes they travel alone to visit other members of the clan apart.
If we compare this to a life where their droppings are diluted in a water tank of a cement where the belugas and other marine mammals spend their days swimming in circles, deprived of everything they like, even the ability to vocalize.
Visitors come from aquariums, spend a few hours in the park, buy some souvenirs and then return home to continue with their lives. The animals aquarium tanks remain the same until the day they die.

It is the heartbreaking lonely vigil of a dog that has lost his best friend.
For seven days, the grieving animal has stood guard next to the body of his partner, unwilling to accept the death of his companion after it was hit by a car.
The dog dragged his partner’s body away from the roadside on the outskirts of Filippovka, in the Perm region of Russia – and has refused to move since.
Instead he pats and paws at his mate, and tries to keep her warm with his own body, waiting for a miracle that will never come.
Children and adults that pass the scene can hear the dog’s howls and cries, and many have reportedly burst into tears at the long-lasting vigil.
Locals offer him food and drink so that they can attempt to carry out a burial, but he will not move, however tempting the treats are.
The witnesses describe the dogs as ‘Romeo and Juliet‘, and have made attempts to give the animal a decent burial.
But when they try to tempt the dog away, he will not move, and will not allow anyone within ten metres of his partner.
One resident said: ‘It’s very sad. He won’t let anyone near her and he keeps trying to warm her up with his own body.’

It is unknown what happened to the dog – the video was posted ten days ago and further updates have been hard to find.
But hopefully there is a happy ending.
For many villagers, touched by the display of enduring loyalty, have promised to adopt the dog when the lonely vigil comes to an end.

Although the 2012 seal hunt appears to have been an entirely publicly-funded operation to put seal pelts in stockpiles, it has been bizarrely hailed by some politicians as a “success”.
Despite the best efforts of the Canadian government (and millions of dollars wasted) major markets such as Russia, Europe, and the United States remain closed to Canadian seal products.
Government officials continue to raise sealers hopes with promises of “gaining market access to China” – but they’ve been making that promise for at least 18 years now, and it still hasn’t materialized.
A strange definition of a successful industry, it would seem!
So long as Canadians sit by and allow politicians to waste taxes on such “successful” enterprises, the seal hunt will to continue. But deep down we must know that heading out to the ice floes and clubbing three-week old seal pups for their fur is no way to try and earn income in this day and age.
Like many other industries whose products are no longer needed nor desired, the end of commercial sealing is long overdue.
We at the International Fund for Animal Welfare know positive change does not come easily.

Humane Society Internationalapplauds theSwiss National Council, for voting 132 to 28 in favour of a prohibition on commercial seal product trade on May 29. The Council noted the cruelty associated with commercial seal hunting, the opposition of many of its citizens to this practice, and the need to ensure the Swiss market does not operate as an alternative for the European Regulation banning commercial seal products trade. The Swiss National Council is the lower house of theFederal Assembly of Switzerland.
“Global markets for seal products are closing for good, climate change is devastating the seals’ sea ice habitat, and it is very clear there is no future in commercial sealing,” said Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of Humane Society International Canada. “Instead of providing artificial life support to this dying industry, our government should do as Canadians want and stop the senseless slaughter of baby seals for good.”
“I have personally observed Canada’s commercial seal slaughter since 2006, and both the cruelty of the killing and the serious impact of climate change on these ice dependent seals have been very difficult to witness,” said Vera Weber, vice president of the Franz Weber Foundation. “I am exceptionally proud of my government for taking action to stop our trade in seal products. While the Senate still has to vote on the ban, the people of Switzerland have been heard and my country will never be a market for seal fur.”
Last year, the Customs Union compromising the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Belarus prohibited the import and export of fur from harp seals, the primary markets of Canada’s commercial seal slaughter. The United States and the European Union – Canada’s two largest trading partners also prohibit trade in commercial seal products. The Canadian government has confirmed that 70,000 seals were slaughtered in the 2012 commercial seal hunt. Local government financed the kill, funding a seal processor to purchase and stockpile seal skins, despite an apparent lack of markets.
HSI/Canada calls on theCanadianand provincial governments to support a federal buyout of the commercial sealing industry, which would involve ending the seal hunt, providing immediate compensation for sealers, and investing in economic alternatives in the communities involved.

Baby bears prepare for wild at Russian cub orphanage.Russia‘s unique baby bear orphanage helps cubs prepare for life in the wild. Every year, illegal bear hunting in Russia leaves a large number of cubs orphaned. One scientist was so touched by the baby bears’ plight, he decided to do something about it.
When Dr. Pazhetnov started his work in the early 1970s, Russia’s Winter Den Hunt was largely responsible for the orphan problem. Using dogs to frighten hibernating bears out of dens in late winter, hunters shot the mothers. New babies, just weeks old, were left behind to die, or turned into pets and abused.
“The work was started in 1974 with three orphaned bear cubs”, Pazhetnov told RT. “I was like a surrogate mother. With my wife, we found out that the bear cubs didn’t need to be trained by the mother for the formation of normal animal behavior, which would allow them to survive in the wild.”
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) joined Pazhetnov and his family 16 years ago, turning his practice into a world-renowned rehabilitation center. Together they have saved hundreds of cubs.
Pazhetnov’s methods mimic the natural process. The handlers wear the same clothes to feed the cubs in the den house, so they smell just like a bear. They cannot cuddle and kiss, no matter how tempting it may be.
“The main thing is to put bears back into the wild”, Dr. Ian Robinson, Director of Emergency Relief at IFAW, told RT. “They don’t try and associate with humans, and they don’t cause problems with humans afterwards.”
In April, the cubs are let outside and are then taken into a large enclosure in the forest with a shelter for bad weather. Porridge is gradually restricted, forcing them to become resourceful when finding food and adventurous regarding new tastes.
The main problem, scientists say, is that Russia does not have its own animal welfare law or anti-cruelty law.
“It is very difficult to get a federal ban, because a lot of important people and officials are hunters themselves”, Maria Vorontsova, IFAW Russia Director, told RT. “Frankly, it is ridiculous that in Russia, there is hunting for female mothers in the den when they have tiny cubs.”
The fund’s most important aim now is to try and push for new legislation. Until such a law is in place, bear cubs are in grave danger, with only one fund to fend for them all.
