Rescued Dogs From Bosnia Looking For New Forever Homes…Can U Help

“I received a special Newsletter via email about Bosnia dogs needing homes; so have been working on it, a little each day! I’m sharing in the hopes somebody can help give one of these sweet dogs a new start in life. They are looking for loving forever homes in & around UK; if you can’t adopt, you can always foster or help out by sponsoring! Founded in 2012, Animal Welfare Advocates for Bosnia is a volunteer group dedicated to assisting and supporting animal welfare groups in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Our work involves raising awareness of the suffering of all animals in Bosnia; raising funds for local animal welfare groups in the country to alleviate this suffering and to locate long-term homes for the rescued dogs and cats. UK Foster Homes needed for Bosnian Dogs

As most of you know, we have a rehoming transport from Bosnia to the UK, set for June. There are still 12 rescued dogs who haven’t had anyone ask about them, or offer them home. This special newsletter focuses on just two of these dogs, Coko and Betty, so you can get to know them a little more.

Possibly your current lifestyle doesn’t permit you adopting a dog, but you’d still like to help? Have you considered fostering? This would offer a dog a safe and caring home environment (far superior to that of a Bosnian pension/kennel) as well as providing your new canine friend with house-training, human/animal contact and getting him or her used to a new domestic environment. It would also offer the opportunity of the dog finding a forever home locally!

Through fundraising, we would provide both the food and pet insurance (including public liability) for the dog while it’s in your home. In addition we would continue to work with the fosterer to promote the adoption of the dog.

BETTY – The ‘ideal’ dog!

Young Betty was rescued as a puppy with her sisters in Sarajevo. The 10-month-old has lived in a pension (kennels) ever since.

She’s a medium sized collie-mix and is a beautiful black and golden colour.

Along with her sisters she caught canine parvovirus, sadly only Betty and her sister Lady survived.

Betty also had a mild case of the skin condition demodex, but is now fully recovered. She’s a gentle and lively dog. The ‘ideal’ dog as she’s been described!

As she’s spent all her life in a pension, it may take her a little time to adjust to the comforts of a real home.

However she already walks well on the leash, loves people and loves to play.

You might also like to consider adopting or fostering her along with her sister, Lady , Opposite, what an adorable little face!!

COKO – In need of special loving care.

As a puppy, Coko was thrown into a rubbish bin along with his siblings.

Sadly a canine parvovirus outbreak took the lives of many of the dogs in the pension, but Coko survived.

Because of his lowered immune system he’s now developed the skin condition demodex. We are trying to make sure he gets the best veterinary treatment for the disease, and he’s showing some improvement, but it has become clear to us that the only way he will fully recover is if we find him a home where he would get special loving care in addition to medical treatment.

The neurological causes behind demodex can only be helped with a stress-free, calm and loving environment. Such dogs need stability, familiar people and a suitable environment to live in, without this there is the possibility that the condition could re-occur. Demodex is not contagious.

Coko is a lovely mix-breed, chocolate brown in colour and about a year old. He loves to cuddle and play but is very timid and shy.

He’s spent all his life in pension, so he’ll need time and a very caring home to help him gain his confidence.

Horror Shelter in Hreša, Bosnia – Dogs In Desperate Need

“Sharing for & on behalf of my good friend & animal advocate, Sandra Jensen…owner of the following blog. Rather than re-blog I wanted to repost , as I know sometimes  re-blogs can be overlooked when we are busy or in a rush…I admit, I have overlooked people’s re-blogs sometimes, because I’m in a rush or because it is not of the same topic etc!! 

But this is of the same topic “ANIMALS” & these dogs are in terrible state. Take a look at the dogs in the slide show below, no animal should suffer this way, their Government must be shamed into taking care of these innocent sentient beings. Jelena Paunović of Život BiH was contacted last night about a shelter in Hreša district, on the outskirts of Sarajevo. She went there with volunteers and took photographs.

She went again this morning with food.This is what she discovered:

Over 50 dogs are being kept in entirely inhumane conditions, without adequate food or water or veterinary treatment, that numerous dogs are kept in tiny cages, that dead dogs are left amongst living dogs. Dogs have open wounds. Puppies are starving.

Furthermore, witnesses said that any non-purebred dog caught by the shelter is killed, and that purebred dogs are stolen from owners and only released to the owner if a ransom is paid.

One person said: “They only want purebred dogs because they can sell them. They just do not care about strays! They are killing them constantly! And also, they are stealing the dogs from people’s yards if they are purebred and selling them. One worker of the shelter I spoke to said that I have to pay 100 EUR if I want my dog back. When I arrived at Hresa shelter (it takes me about one hour!) they killed my dog in their car. My God I was ready to pay the ransom!”

Jelena was told by Slaviša Jovčić, the manager of the shelter and director of Glog, the company that built the shelter, that he was promised 130 000 KM from the municipalities for the shelter, but the full amount of the money was never paid by the municipality and therefore Slaviša Jovčić cannot ensure the care of the dogs.

What can be done? It will cost 20 euros a day to feed the dogs through the winter. It will cost animal welfare volunteers from Sarajevo 15 euros for each trip they make to check on the dogs and bring food. There is nowhere to release them to other than the streets.

There are no foster homes for them, and ‘pension’ will cost at least 80 euros per dog.

Maybe we can a) raise funds for food and b) bring international attention so the authorities are forced to do something. If you have any contacts with international animal welfare organisations please let them know.

I request that the Government of Bosnian and Herzegovina, the Istocni Stari Grad authorities and municipality mayor Bojo Gašanović in particular, investigate the matter of the Hreša dog shelter.

Modern practices must be implemented, giving food and fresh water and the facility be must be kept sanitary and properly staffed with veterinary professionals so the animals are cared for and, ultimately, caring homes need to be found for these dogs.

This situation has sparked a global outcry and we look to the Bosnian and Herzegovinan justice system and authorities to conform with EU standards regarding animal welfare, and to apply the law that was passed in Bosnia Herzegovina incorporating these EU standards.

“The following is a translation regarding another building in the countryside belonging to evil owners Senija & Senka Saric (it’s rather confusing as Google translator isn’t spot on with gramma ) who apparently killed dogs  at the house… the animal activist told the police & others about the situation at this house & her plea’s were met with the same ignorance as was at the previous house…until she took the story to the media, then the house was searched.  As far as I can make out, Senija Saric & husband or daughter are in prison, for how long, who knows…I will keep you informed!”

Cottage and farm in Hotonj are also a source of infection for many years and a threat to locals. Members of the association they found 33 dogs, five corpses and stray puppies who ate a dead dog!

Bosnia-Herzegovina – Jelena Paunovic, compassionate animal lover from Sarajevo, turns desperately to the media. Many stray dogs are being held in a building in downtown Sarajevo under corresponding statutory conditions.

Help Save the Bosnia Bears

For many years now a large number of wild animals have lived under illegal and completely inhumane and inadequate conditions where they are being kept as an attraction and marketing tool for restaurants and other catering establishments or in private zoos.
They all ended up in the hands of their current “owners” thanks to insensitive hunters who killed their mothers.

Two bears, who have spent their entire life in small cages, under terrible conditions, are going to be put down by decision of Bosnia & Herzegovina‘s Ministry of Agriculture, Water-Management and Forestry. Actually, the same fate expects all 10 captive bears, known in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
