Information about the Yulin Dog Meat Festival

Here is a list of the various levels of corruption I found connected to the festival:

*STOLEN PETS

“An animal rights lawyer in Beijing said that official claims that all dogs are bred by local dog farmers is false. An Xiang said according to research there are no such farms and that all dogs are abducted from the streets.”

“It is thought most dogs are pets or strays abducted from streets. Vendors then buy them for around nine yuan (85p) and sold for 25 yuan. People who steal the dogs make the biggest profits of all, the news agency said.

*CRIMINAL LAWS ARE BROKEN

“Some of the animal thieves broke Criminal Law using weapons to threaten residents to hand over their dogs,” Li said.

*MEAT NOT PROPERLY QUARANTINED

“Another risk factor highlighted is poor food safety. Liu Lang, director of the Beijing Small Animal Veterinary Association said butchers slaughtering the dogs are at risk of rabies, while the meat is not properly quarantined or inspected, increasing the chance of food safety problems.”

“While a quarantine regulation on dogs and cats was introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture last year, meaning all cats and dogs had to be quarantined before transport, this is rarely observed, he added.”

*ILLEGAL SLAUGHTERHOUSES

“Li said there were no dog farms or slaughterhouses that safely produce dog meat: “I was told there are four major workshops that produce dog meat in the city. I visited them and found all of them had no business licences or certificates.”

*UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO PROTECT ONE GROUP BUT NOT THE OTHER

“Medical staff have been banned from attending the dog meat festival by health authorities from three local hospitals: “According to the directive issued by higher authorities, hospital staff are prohibited from having dog meat at food stalls, restaurants or hotels in Yudong and Fumian districts,” the notice read.”

*HIDING THE FACTS/TRUTH

“According to South Morning China Post, local restaurants have been ordered to cover the word, dog, on signs to appease protesters: “Food safety authorities told us to change our signboards due to the objection of certain dog lovers,” staff members reportedly said.”

*LOCAL YULIN GOVERNMENT STILL CULPABLE*IT’S UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO NOT PROTECT YOUR CITIZENS“In Yulin, local authorities have stressed that they had no hand in organizing the controversial dog fest.

(http://www.worldcrunch.com/china-2.0/china-traditional-dog-meat-recipes-v.-new-animal-rights-activism/animal-rights-animals-shark-fins-dog-pets-wildlife/c9s17554/#.VI1hztKG89l)

Conclusion: Corruption is flagrant and decimating China’s cats and dogs ruins China’s reputation, threatening their economy.

Conclusion: The YDMF is detrimental to the social and moral development of China’s citizens.

Conclusion: China needs to develop animal welfare laws and not use the YDMF to “clean-up” their stray cats and dogs.

Conclusion: Allowing the YDMF to continue, contravenes the Chinese Constitution and other laws and administrative regulations because every aspect of the YDMF is illegal and makes China look bad in the world’s eyes. There is more to this festival than China’s ability and freedom to eat cats and dogs and the  false health benefits derived from part-taking in the consumption of cat and dog meat, but the festival enables corruption to run rampant throughout China and its bordering countries, like Vietnam. It is imperative to the people of China, specifically for the prosperity of their children, for the good of their social and moral development and the benefit of good health, that the local YuLin government be encouraged to cancel the festival.

WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO: Burning Dog Sparks Public Outcry In South Korea

Comments Off on WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO: Burning Dog Sparks Public Outcry In South Korea

“I know what I would like to do to the f-ing bastards that set the dog alight…the most horrifying fact is; it could well have been children! It has & will continue to happen until changes are made & animal abuse is seen as a serious crime; which merits serious punishment!!”

“I know for a fact there are people or kids out there, that know who did this; along with the thousands of others keeping schtum about similar animal abuse cases. Children are only interested in the here & now…they either don’t want to, or are bullied into not wanting to grass their mates up! They have no idea, nor can they relate to the repercussion, that first “act of animal abuse” can lead to.”

” I think kids should be taught about the “The link between animal abuse & serial killers etc” within the school environment. When problems escalate from children abusing animals etc.; then it’s children that need to know why animal abuse, of any kind is wrong & what the ramifications of committing such a crime…can lead to!”

A South Korean animal rights group offered a $2,800 dollar reward to catch those responsible for setting a dog on fire in an incident that triggered a public outcry.

CCTV footage of the dog running through a car park while engulfed in flames was shown on national TV news channels and prompted angry discussions on social network sites.

The dog ran into a garage and triggered a fire which gutted the structure in Yongin, a city south of Seoul, on Sunday.

The group Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth offered a three million won ($2,813) reward for information leading to the arrest of those behind the incident.

Whatever they tried to do, whether to kill, eat or abuse the dog, this cannot be tolerated for any reason,” the group said.

Dog meat is a traditional delicacy in South Korea, but growing numbers of Koreans oppose the practice and consider it an international embarrassment.

‘Happened …’ Burned to the car repair shop caught fire jumped

Published on 22 Jan 2013

Auto body shop a few days ago (20 days) in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, a fire did occur. Somehow the cause of the fire was this dog. JTBC affiliate reporter Kim, Youn – Tae Central Daily reported.

There is a petitions on Causes.com for people to join & sign, regards this dog & other dogs that are treated in such heinous crimes…this has to stop!…Please sign & join the cause below”

PETITION: South Korea! Stop Burning Dogs Alive!

Some of the text from the Cause:-

However, this is not an isolated case in South Korea.  Dogs are burned alive in South Korea everyday.

“Dogs are killed with high-voltage electrocution, which takes anywhere from thirty seconds to three minutes, hanged, and even beaten to death at the request of customers who believe the meat more tender and tastier the greater the suffering (one of the most pernicious of myths), and that the so-called medicinal properties are enhanced.

They are most often killed within sight of their cage mates. They are then thrown into a tub of boiling water, often still alive, and then into a rotating drum for the removal of their fur, and finally blow torched.  At Moran Market, South Korea’s largest open air-market for dog meat, dog carcasses are on display next to the cages of live dogs.

Cats are often bludgeoned and thrown into boiling water while still alive.”  Frightening and horrific cruelty to man’s best friends is endemic and systematic in South Korean society.

These unprecedented cruelty towards animals can no longer be tolerated and it is our moral duty to urge South Korean government to respect and enforce not just its own but the Global Animal Protection Laws.

Each year 2 million dogs and thousands of cats are brutally killed and eaten.  These helpless animals are forced to endure unspeakable suffering,  deprivation and torture from birth to death.  Abandoned pets end up as meat as well.

We oppose this on ethical, health, environmental and moral grounds.  It is unconscionable for the South Korean Government to ignore the huge growing shock and outcry on social media sites all over the world.

Record Heat Wave Kills Over 830,000 Farm Animals

Comments Off on Record Heat Wave Kills Over 830,000 Farm Animals

SOUTH KOREA – Hundreds of thousands of animals have died in South Korea, the government said Wednesday, due to a heat wave that is heading for a three-week streak.

Over 830,000 farm animals, including 786,512 chickens, have been killed since 20 July, when midday temperatures began hovering above 33 C in most parts of the country, according to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, reports YonhapNewsAgency.

The dead animals include 40,780 ducks and 336 pigs. Such damages are often caused by power outages that can halt the ventilation and cooling systems at farms.

The country was forced to issue power shortage warnings for two consecutive days this week as the sweltering weather pushed up its energy consumption to new highs, driving down its electricity levels to what officials called “dangerous levels” of less than three million kilowatts.

“The number of animals killed may actually be greater, pending on a more thorough survey,” a ministry official said, noting damages may also grow from the continuing heat wave.

The country is also experiencing its longest streak of so-called tropical nights, where overnight temperatures stay above 25 C.

South Korean tradition of eating dog meat to beat the heat draws international criticism

Comments Off on South Korean tradition of eating dog meat to beat the heat draws international criticism

  • Known as ‘Bok-Nal’, South Koreans eat dog meat during the hottest days of summer because they believe it increases their stamina
  • Animal rights activists staged international protests against the tradition
  • The activists claim that the animals are kept in cramped cages and are slaughtered in cruel ways
  • Seoul is experiencing the hottest summer since 1994

Don’t eat: 2.5 million dogs are killed each year for consumption according to animal rights group In Defense of Animals. The protestors’ signs read ‘Don’t eat dog meat’

The South Korean belief that eating dog helps beat the heat in the summer months has angered animal rights activists around the world.

Worldwide anger: Animal rights activists staged protests around the world including Bangkok, Thailand where this woman painted her face and stood in front of the South Korea embassy, placard in hand

Known as ‘Bok-Nal’, the dog eating days, it is a ritual celebrated by South Koreans where dog meat is eaten to increase stamina during the hottest days of the year.

To coincide with the tradition, animal rights activists staged protests around the world today, packing into wired cages in various locations including in front of the South Korean embassies in Seoul, London and America.

While dog meat is consumed throughout the year, during Bok-Nal South Koreans consume more to combat the heat.

Dog meat restaurants in Seoul say they served more customers than usual today.

Animal rights group In Defense of Animals (IDAUSA) said dogs and cats are kept in cramped, filthy cages and slaughtered in unimaginable ways as part of the $2 billion dog and cat meat industry.A statement on their website said: ‘Two and a half million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, hanged, or beaten to death each year.

‘The dogs are slaughtered in unimaginable ways: electrocuted, hanged, and even beaten to death, because of the prevailing myth that the greater the suffering the more tender and tastier the meat, and that the mythical health properties are enhanced.

Thousands of cats are also eaten in soups and ‘tonics’.

IDAUSA said: ‘Cats are often bludgeoned and thrown into boiling water while still alive.’

According to Yonhap news agency, Seoul is experiencing the longest period of time with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius since 1994.

South Korea to ban catching of dolphins for shows

Comments Off on South Korea to ban catching of dolphins for shows

The country will designate Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins as protected mammals and ban catching them for use in shows.

PROTECTED: An upcoming bill will also designate sea turtles and sea horses as protected species

South Korea will ban the catching of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins for use in shows by designating them as protected mammals, the maritime affairs ministry said Tuesday.

An upcoming bill will also designate sea turtles and sea horses as protected species, the ministry said.
Currently it is legal to catch dolphins and whales for a show or for research if authorities give prior approval. Otherwise, it is punishable by a jail term of up to two years or a fine of up to five million won ($4,300).
The revised law would authorize seizures only for research. It would raise penalties to up to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to 20 million won.
Dolphins are widely used for shows in South Korea, but Seoul’s main zoo agreed in March to suspend its popular show over claims by activists that one of the dolphins was captured illegally.
In April, a court on the southern holiday island of Jeju ordered the release into the ocean of five dolphins which had been captured without permission and used in a show.
Some experts say dolphin shows have educational value and released mammals may not be able to adapt to the open sea. But animal rights activists have called for a ban on dolphin shows and tough rules on seizures.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR SOUTH KOREAN DOGS AND CATS!
Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

IDA would like to invite you to take action for the dogs and cats in South Korea, and to be a Compassionate Coordinator.

The $2 billion dollar-a-year South Korean dog and cat meat industry slaughters approximately two and half million dogs and thousands of cats in the most horrific fashion for human consumption, because of the prevailing myth that the more an animal is tortured, the tastier and more tender the meat.  Aside from the needless suffering, there is the very serious public health risk associated with eating dog and cat meat.

We need activists to organize outreach eventsto educate their communities about this industry of horror that is sanctioned by the South Korean government. You can hold a protest or leafleting in a public area to raise awareness, or have a table at a local venue or event to get the word out. IDA will provide you with the materials you will need to make your event a rousing success.

We would like to have a presence at the Korean Embassies and Consulates in the following cities. Please let us know if you would be willing to help coordinate an event:

You do not need to live in any of these cities to participate. If you are interested in helping spread the word about the Dogs and Cats of South Korea, please contact hope@idausa.org or call 707-540-1760. Your day of action could be any day around August 7th. Click here to register your event.

For more information about the South Korean Dog and Cat Campaign, please e-mailrobin@idausa.org or call 415-331-8659.

Live Dog Tied to Back of Car Again, Netizens Demand Law Change

Comments Off on Live Dog Tied to Back of Car Again, Netizens Demand Law Change

Following the “Devil Equus” incident covered by koreaBANG last week that saw a live dog tied to the back of a car, a similar case of alleged animal abuse is gaining public attention, this time under the nickname “Devil Beast” after, on Monday the 30th April, a car was witnessed in Busan driving around with a dog tied by its leash to the back of the car.

Last week’s incident caused quite a stir on the Korean internet, leading to outcry from pop star Lee Hyori and even prompting a demonstration by the “Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth” group on Saturday the 28th on Gwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul. Despite this, the incident was since found to be an unintentional and unfortunate accident and the police have cleared the offending driver of all charges.

However, in the case of the “Devil Beast” it would seem that the lead had been attached to the back of the car more deliberately. The case has been submitted to the police for investigation, but netizens keep calling for the animal protection law to be strengthened.

S. Korean public furious over animal abuse after dog dragged to death by car

Comments Off on S. Korean public furious over animal abuse after dog dragged to death by car

SEOUL, April 28 (Xinhua) — A recent tragic case involving the death of a dog has sparked a public outcry over animal cruelty in South Korea and puts the effectiveness of animal protection laws in question.

Public outrage broke out after a picture was posted online on April 21 of a dog being dragged along a highway by its leash tied to the rear of a car.

The picture showed that the dog was already dead as the dog’s internal organs had ruptured and the road was stained with blood.

What further fueled the fury over the horrendous animal abuse case was that the driver of the car was released without charge after being questioned by police.

On Friday April 20, a dog was tied to the back of a car and dragged Photo credit: The Korea Times

The driver told police that he put the dog in the trunk thinking the dog might make the backseat dirty. He left the trunk open so that the dog won’t suffocate, but the dog fell out of the trunk as the car sped up on the highway, he told police.

He was freed without charge as police found that he did not intentionally abuse the dog.

According to South Korea’s animal protection laws, only those who deliberately abuse animals are subject to up to 10 million won, or about 8,832 U.S. dollars, in fines or up to one year in prison.

The acquittal of the driver has triggered widespread condemnation and protests from Internet users against the lenient handling of animal abuse. “There are people who think that this incident is not a big deal. It explains why we face so many cases of animal abuse in the country,” wrote one netizen on Daum Agora, one of the largest internet debate bulletin boards in South Korea. “We have to strength animal protection laws so that people won’t treat animal cruelty lightly.”

Animal rights groups strongly denounced the police’s decision and launched demonstrations demanding a reinvestigation of the case and harsher punishment for the dog owner. “If it was a case involving the death of a human being, it would not have been closed with an acquittal based on a few testimonies,” Park So- yeon, head of Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE), told local media.

CARE has been collecting signatures for an online petition to set up a law prohibiting animal abusers from raising animals again.

The activist group is also scheduled to hold a rally on Saturday in central Seoul to protest the handling of the case.

South Korea’s Cruel and Gruesome Dog Meat Industry – “Two faces of Traditional Markets”

Comments Off on South Korea’s Cruel and Gruesome Dog Meat Industry – “Two faces of Traditional Markets”

Moran Market (Traditional Outdoor Market) in Seongnam-city, Kyunggido-province, South Korea. This video exposes the horrific reality of dogs and cats being sacrificed as meat by double standard that categorize some dogs as meat dogs and some dogs as pet dogs.

Whether a captured stray or a farmed dog, many marketplace slaughter methods are deliberately designed to intensify and prolong the animal’s suffering. This is the result of a misguided belief that torturing a dog prior to death results in better tasting, adrenaline-rich meat.

Killing methods include clubbing to death, throat-slitting, hanging by the neck and electrocution
