SAD UPDATE: Emaciated Dog Left To Fend For Himself In Extreme Cold

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Francis has passed away. He left peacefully during surgery, and we are thankful that he did not die on the cold street. If only for a short time, he knew what it meant to be loved and cared for. From the bottom of our hearts, we are forever grateful for your support of Francis and all of the others we have yet to rescue as we trudge along through this frigid weather. December 10, Life for a dog dubbed “Francis,” has been hard. When the biting, bitter cold hit St. Louis, Mo., what was formerly difficult became nearly life-ending.

Rescuers with Stray Rescue of St. Louis came upon Francis on Tuesday; the beleaguered senior dog was clearly in distress and in need of immediate help.

Francis’ skeletal body was gently lifted from the frozen ground and he was carried to a vehicle which would transport him to an emergency veterinary team.

As the temperatures dip below freezing, our worries rise. During this extreme weather, the deck is stacked against even the healthiest of street dogs. Sadly, there are also other, more susceptible four-legged friends out there – senior dogs and puppies who really struggle to survive in the elements. As soon as Randy and Donna knew he was in the best hands possible, they were out the door and back in the rescue Jeep again.

The elderly shepherd, who is estimated to be 10 years of age, was placed on I.V. fluids, provided with oxygen and warmed with heated blankets.

The rescue agency captured video of Francis’ first moments at the veterinary hospital; it is painfully evident that the dog is defeated, exhausted and on the brink of nearly giving up altogether.

Francis is not yet out of the woods, but today, for the first time in far too long, he is warm, safe and receiving the compassion and kindness that he deserves.

Randy and Donna hit the streets like they do every day and, with the temperatures turning bitter cold, their typical sense of urgency was even greater. Responding to another call, they turned down an alley. As they drove, Donna shouted to stop the car. They simultaneously saw the frigid, defeated body of a Shepard Mix, and Randy jumped out of the car – knowing right away that this dog needed to get warm… immediately. Randy named him Franics, as in Franics of Assisi, patron saint of animals. This sweet old dog needs all the help he can get.

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged a 35-year-old woman in connection with an animal abuse case after a dog was found outside a north city home with severe burns and eventually died.

The dog was found July 10 anchored to a chain in the 4300 block of Cote Brilliante Avenue with burns covering his eyes, nose, feet, ears, legs and body. The animal, which rescues called “Brownie,” had been recovering at the Veterinary Specialty Services prior to his death.

Adrienne Martin, 35, faces two felony charges after investigators say she admitting to setting a dog on fire in North St. Louis.

With signs and flyers, St. Louis’ animal cruelty task force took this case seriously. It’s an arrest members hope will get attention.

Near the empty dog house, to the left of the dog sign, the singed leaves, animal cruelty investigators say, show the site of the fire that took the life of the dog named Brownie.

“Gasoline was poured on him and then he was lit on fire with a lighter,” said Randy Grim with the organization Stray Rescue. Grim is also a member of St. Louis’ new animal cruelty task force.

“His eyes and face were burned completely, so even if he would have recovered he would never have been able to see again,” said Grim.

Brownie died a few days later. Martin is now charged with two felony counts, animal abuse and knowingly burning.

Investigators say she admitted torching the dog as he was chained to a fence because he had previously bitten her son.

“I don’t think she did it,” said Trena Block, Martin’s sister and the owner of Brownie.

Even though her sister confessed and witnesses picked her out of a line-up, Block believes her sister is innocent.

But more evidence pointing to Martin are posts authorities say she wrote on her Facebook page stating, “I’m on killa mode and the hastag killdogs.com.” and “I mean what I say and I say what I mean, hastag alldogsdon’tgoto heaven.com”.

Dog set on fire dies!!

Trena claims Martin was referring to her husband. 

“All dogs don’t go to heaven meaning you being so bad to me, I’m your wife and you ain’t going to go to heaven just off of this,” she said.

The felony charges are the first for St. Louis’ animal task force formed last October and Grim says they speak loudly.

“People are watching St. Louis to see how we handle this and I want to set a good example for other cities and maybe they’ll have a task force of their own,” said Grim.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis says since October 1, 2012 over 100 cases of animal abuse have been investigated, 24 arrests have been made, and more than 200 animal control citations have been issued.

KMOV reports St. Louis Police have charged a woman with felony animal cruelty charges after she allegedly killed her dog with a blowtorch. KMOX says the woman responsible is Adrienne Martin. The dog, named Brownie, was taken to the Stray Rescue of St. Louis after it was discovered, but the rescue couldn’t save the dog’s live. KMOV also says Martin bragged about the dog’s death on her Facebook page.

Donation Ordered To Humane Society In Cennitra Fowler Dog Abuse Case

ST. LOUIS • A St. Louis woman has admitted to one of the city’s worst known cases of animal neglect, in which she starved her two dogs to near death, then threw one of them away in the trash bin behind her house.

The dog who was tossed in the trash later died. He was named “Our Little Boy” by Stray Rescue, the animal rescue group that tried to save him. The other dog, “Our Little Girl,” was so emaciated she could not stand, but ultimately recovered and was adopted.

Stray Rescue founder Randy Grim called it one of the worst cases of animal neglect he’s experienced, and when the cityannounced the formation of an Animal Abuse Task Force in September, it was one of the first to be prosecuted.

Cennitra Fowler, 22, the owner of the two dogs, pleaded guilty on Friday to two misdemeanor counts of animal abuse. In exchange for her plea, prosecutors recommended and a judge ordered she serve one year of unsupervised probation in which she will have to perform 24 hours of community service, take an animal care class with Stray Rescue and donate $75 to the Humane Society of Missouri. She is also not allowed to have or care for any pets during that time.

The range of punishment for an animal abuse charge is up to one year in jail.

On Tuesday, Grim said he thought Fowler “got off quite easy” given the trauma the dogs went through, but that he also understands sentencing options were limited for the misdemeanor charges that were issued.

“If she doesn’t want to go to jail she has to do everything right and take responsibility for her actions,” he noted. “One dog died because of her. Could (the sentence) be tougher? Sure. But I’m just glad there’s an educational component.”

Grim said the class at Stray Rescue is not an easy one, and he will not hesitate to report to the judge if Fowler does not participate wholeheartedly.

“This is her chance to show she can be responsible,” he said.

Fowler called the city about her two dogs in October 2011; it’s not clear why. Stray Rescue volunteers who responded said they found the female dog with bones protruding.

“I threw the other dog away,” Fowler told them of the male dog.

Prosecutors said the formation of the task force a year later enabled them to charge Fowler. Before the task force, there was no coordinated approach between the city health department, police and Stray Rescue.

Cases like Fowler’s had also previously been handled as ordinance violations in municipal court.

Four Year Sentence in St. Louis “House Of Horrors” Torture Case

Darick Stallworth of St. Louis, who pleaded guilty to three counts of felony animal abuse and torture and two counts of animal abuse and abandonment, was sentenced to four years in prisonon Thursday morning.

Darick D. Stallworth, 31, was charged May 22, 2012, with animal abuse and neglect in connection with the torturing and mutilating of five dogs inside a vacant building in St. Louis.

This marks the first successful felony prosecution in St. Louis since the city has stepped up efforts to fight animal abuse.

Back in May, Randy Grim, the owner of Stray Rescue of St. Louis was contacted by police about a dead dog that was hanging from a second-story window of an abandoned apartment building. When Randy and other members of Stray Rescue checked out the apartment building with police they found five dead dogs, all of which had clearly been tortured.

The five deceased pit bull dogs had been hanged, strangled and burned. Stray Rescue, which responds to many animal abuse cases described the scene as “one of the most horrendous cases of animal abuse we have ever encountered.”

Defense attorneys for Stallworth petitioned the judge for leniency and asked for only probation because 31-year-old Stallworth has an IQ of only 54 and has never been in trouble before. Stallworth’s parents believe sending him to prison serves no purpose and that he needs counselling and rehabilitation.

Many supporters of Stray Rescue showed up to the courthouse for the sentencing. Grim said the sentencing was “a start” and added, “This case will haunt me for the rest of my life. It’s ingrained in my brain forever and it’s like a nightmare that’s always in the back of your mind.”

The severity of this case, along with other animal abuse cases in St. Louis, has led to the creation of the St. Louis Animal Cruelty Task Force. Their goal is to raise awareness, increase convictions and deter future animal abuse. Grim whose rescue organization was a key member to the creation of the task force stated, “This is a new day in St. Louis, and I want to see this become one of the most humane cities in the country, not just with the animals but with each other.”

Help Cats and Ferrets Used in Cruel Training at St. Louis Hospital

St. Louis Children’s Hospital, in conjunction with Washington University in St. Louis, continues to torment cats and ferrets for painful intubation training exercises in their Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and pediatric residency programs.

During the exercises, plastic tubes are repeatedly forced down the cats’ windpipes. This procedure can cause bleeding, swelling, pain, scarring, collapsed lungs, and even death.

The PALS course’s sponsor, the American Heart Association, states that it “does not require or endorse the use of animals in PALS courses” and that “the AHA recommends that any hands-on intubation training for the AHA PALS course be performed on lifelike human manikins.” PETA has surveyed hundreds of PALS facilities across the country, and nearly every one of them—including St. Louis University, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, and St. Louis Community College—uses non-animal methods for intubation training. Similarly, more than 90 percent of pediatric residency programs in the U.S. use only non-animal methods for intubation training.

Research shows that in addition to protecting animals, simulators better prepare medical professionals to treat seriously ill or injured children because they more accurately replicate human anatomy and allow people to practice these skills repeatedly.
