Neglected, Chained Dog Dies In The Bitter Cold

“Just heartbreaking, all that was needed was a bit of compassion, love & warmth. Another dog that was used as just a garden ornament…WTF…if you have a dog that’s tied up outside all the time, not allowed into the home…why do you have a dog at all??  Instead of a living creature, just get a proper alarm system, one that won’t feel pain & die a slow death because it’s not taken care of.! This just makes me furious! I hope the owners are taken to court & charged with animal cruelty etc. because they have to pay; nobody should be allowed to get away with murder!

Perry County’s animal rescue team, Rough Road Rescue, is on a mission to prosecute two Brewer pet owners who neglected their dogs — one to the point of death.

After Linda and Steve Svehla, of RRR, were called to a home Sunday concerning a dead boxer lying in the snow (and a second dog that was severely malnourished), the couple is now seeking justice for the animals.

The dog owners, and residents of the Brewer home, are in the process of moving out, but apparently had intentions of leaving their pets behind, Steve Svehla said.

In the days leading up to RRR’s visit on Sunday, a concerned neighbour noticed consistent neglect of the dogs, including lack of food, water and proper shelter. She made every attempt to notify the owners of her concern, but Svehla said the owners were uncooperative.

“The neighbour contacted the people several times with concerns about the dogs,” Svehla said. “After so many times, she got really concerned, so she planned to take food and water over. When she got there, the boxer didn’t respond. It was barely breathing.”

The neighbour took the boxer home in hopes of reviving it, but it was too late. Unsure of what to do with its body, especially with no direction from the owner, the neighbor placed the boxer inside a makeshift doghouse located on the owner’s property.

As reports of snow came in, the neighbor couldn’t stand to see the dog’s body freeze, so she covered it, Svehla said. Meanwhile, the second dog, a lab, was nearby, also without proper care. The rescue couple would later learn the dogs belonged to two different owners who are both believed to be residents of the Brewer home.

“They belonged to people in the process of moving out,” said Linda Svehla. “The two dogs that were there belonged to two different people, but they still left them there. The owners were coming and going, moving stuff out, and there were no tracks [in the snow] going back to the dogs.”

Fed up with lack of concern, the neighbor contacted the Perry County Sheriff’s Department on Sunday. Upon arrival, deputies contacted RRR.

“We took possession of the lab,” Steve Svehla said. “We wrapped the boxer in a blanket and took it [to a local vet]. The only protection that dog had was a wooden box.”

Svehla said he believes the dog owners are aware of current circumstances, but have still made no attempts to learn of their dogs’ whereabouts or well-being. As far as he knows, Svehla said the owners know of the boxer’s death.

Currently, the Svehlas are sheltering the lab, and said she’s doing well. An autopsy has been performed on the boxer to check for another, undisclosed form of animal abuse, and the couple is awaiting results.

“We’re looking to prosecute,” Steve Svehla said. “I’ve given the sheriff’s department all our information on this. If [the county] chooses not to prosecute this, we’ll take it further ourselves.”

The couple posted a photo of the dead boxer on their Facebook page with an explanation of its circumstances.

Several thousand Facebook users have shared the photo, or commented on it with disdain and concern.

“We’re getting responses everywhere,” Svehla said. “People need to be aware. This is just not acceptable.”

Help did not come in time!

Thousands of people are mourning the senseless death of a beautiful dog they did not know…a neglected, tethered dog who was left outside in frigid conditions, without adequate shelter…a dog who perished as a result.

Rough Road Rescue, Inc., which is located in Perry County, Mo., shared the bitter news of the neglected boxer‘s passing via Facebook on Sunday:

Both of these dogs was tied out. no food no water and barely any protection. Well I have both the animals. It kills me to say, I was called a little late. This beautiful animal (boxer) couldn’t stand the bitter cold with no food or water to sustain his body.

He laid down and died. By himself with no one to comfort him. Except for the other dog. A chocolate lab, which was unable to get close to the boxer and watched as her friend froze to death. She is safe and will be cared for here at the rescue.

The rescue added:

I will bury her friend out here. And give him the respect he deserved.

Extreme winter weather is blanketing much of the nation – unfortunately, many dogs are not provided with the comfort and safety of a warm home to shield them from the elements, and they are left to their own devices outdoors.

If you see a dog who has been left outdoors, without adequate protection from the elements, please reach out for help. If the dog’s owner is unwilling to remedy the issue, contact local animal control officials as soon as possible.

About Rough Road Rescue Inc.:-

Rough Road Rescue, Inc. is a state licensed animal rescue located just outside of Perryville, Mo. It’s a small organization, started in early 2013, and operated by its founders, Steve and Linda Svehla. The rescue is located on the couple’s property just yards from their backdoor and located seven miles from Perryville. It is the only licensed animal rescue in Perry County, Mo.

The name Rough Road Rescue is not only depictive of the events that lead animals to the rescue, but equally as consistent with the beginning of the organization itself. It has indeed been a rough road for all, but according to Steve and Linda Svehla, one well worth traveling.

It started with a dog wandering into the Svehla’s yard. A hound that had somehow gotten through the fence surrounding their yard, and found its way onto an old tarp for refuge from the frozen ground. Upon investigation, the Svehla’s discovered the hound was starving and its feet were frostbitten. They decided to take the hound in, give him a real home, and named him Sam.

After taking on Sam, the Svehla’s agreed to do what they could to help other stray pets. That was the beginning of Rough Road Rescue, Inc.

Shortly after opening, the rescue obtained its license through the Missouri Department of Agriculture, is a registered charity with the Missouri Attorney General, and is currently going through the process to become a 501(3)c non-profit organization. A non-profit status will enable donors to deduct their contributions to the rescue on their taxes as well as open doors for the rescue to seek grants to help fund their operation.

Since the creation of Rough Road Rescue, Inc., the project has grown to nine outdoor kennels, an isolation kennel, and a substantial exercise yard. Having no paid employees or regular volunteers, the Svehla’s provide care for the animals on their own. The rescue is a non euthanizing operation and pets taken in by RRR remain there until they are adopted or sent on to other rescues.

Early on the Svehla’s approached the city and county governments as well as another local animal welfare organization, to offer their assistance with local strays. RRR was met with skepticism and opposition that made its way into the local news on more than one occasion.

While Rough Road Rescue has formed a line of communication with local government entities, cooperation is far from desirable and the rescue works consistently to improve relations with local offices and law enforcement. It is the intent of RRR to be persistent until a good relationship can be established and therefore save lives and provide care for the needy strays in the area.

Being a small, no-kill operation, the rescue has it’s limitations but takes in each new ward as available space allows. Despite those limitations, RRR is not “selective” of the animals they take in. Dogs and cats alike have been housed at the rescue, and the dogs that have been there have come in all sizes and breeds.

To date, Rough Road Rescue has rescued and rehomed more than 30 animals and have crossposted countless numbers of lost pets, helping them find their way back home.

Several of the pets taken in by the rescue have required extensive medical treatment provided by local veterinarian, Dr. Freeman at All Creatures Veterinary Clinic, LLC, in Perryville, Mo. Most recently RRR took in a dog with severe injuries as a direct result of extreme abuse. The dog had to have its leg amputated but is expected to make a full recovery.

RRR. Latest News Regards The Above:-

We have been requested from the sheriffs dept. That we post to ask everyone to stop calling the department asking what’s going on. And since the department is releasing this info. Then I will let everyone know what’s going on. There were two dogs at this residence. Two owners. I was called by the sheriffs office on sunday at 9:44am that a animal had been abandoned. I met the deputy at this home.

It was requested that I take the lab into my possession, then informed there possibly was another dog across the yard dead, again the deputy requested that I take it also. Making a long explanation shorter. The owner of the boxer was charged last night. I was also informed by the deputy that I had to return the lab to the other owner. Even though neither animal had food water or appropriate shelter.

The only difference was one animal survived. the owner showed up this morning, with the charged owner and took possession of the lab. With the understanding we had concerns about the well being of this lab. That’s it in a nut shell…..it’s a sad day for us at the rescue. This will continue to happen if we don’t get the laws changed. My opinion only.

Cops: Medford Man Shot Neighbours Dog With BB Gun

A Medford man was arrested Sunday evening on animal cruelty charges after allegedly shooting his neighbor’s dog with a BB gun, Suffolk County police said.

Martin Frey, 54, of 84 Lincoln Road, is awaiting arraignment Monday at First District Court in Central Islip after being charged with one count of animal cruelty and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

According to police, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sixth Precinct patrol officers received a 911 call from a woman at 82 Lincoln Road reporting that her neighbor had shot her dog.

When police officers Ettore Naclerio and Michael Cafarella arrived to the home, they noticed that the German Shepard had a BB gun pellet lodged in his nose and the dog was bleeding. Police said the injuries were non-life-threatening.

Frey was arrested at the scene and police said he was found to be in possession of a gravity knife when he was arrested, spurring the weapons possession charge.

He was held overnight in police custody and held for morning arraignments, police said.

Peñitas Police Believe Poisoning Behind Deaths of Dozen Dogs Over Weekend

May 14th – PEÑITAS — Authorities suspect someone targeted dogs in a Peñitas neighborhood with tainted meat this weekend, leaving 12 animals dead and one apparently recovering, police Chief Roel Bermea said.

The Police Department is asking the public to provide any information that might lead to an arrest in connection to the crimes. Bermea said the first call to police about a dog believed to be poisoned and killed came in about 1 p.m. Sunday.

 Soon thereafter, four more calls regarding dead pets came in and, eventually, investigating officers found the total dead reached at least a dozen, the chief said. Nine dogs were found dead Sunday and three more were discovered Monday.

“Never,” Bermea said when asked whether he had encountered such a situation before. “This is a first for me. There’s somebody out there doing this.”

In many cases, the Mother’s Day holiday was dampened as families arrived home to find their pets, often thought of as members of the family, dead, he said. It appears the suspected poisonings were concentrated on three streets in a neighborhood near 3 Mile Line and Liberty Boulevard where dogs ran loose, he added.

Officers have found some meat they believe is contaminated and connected to the deaths, but continue to try to find evidence linking them together.

The chief said one citizen who found their dog seriously ill was able to feed it milk and bread after calling a local veterinarian, who advised the animal might have been poisoned.

The dog is recovering, he said. Police are still canvassing the area, but residents don’t seem to know much, the chief said.

If an arrest in the case is made, the suspect can expect to face at least one count of animal cruelty per death, he said.

“We’re asking the public to see if they have any information to let us know,” Bermea said. “We’re actually trying to find out what happened.”

Romanian Hunting Party Draws Criticism

Environmentalists criticise a hunting excursion for high-profile politicians and businessmen.

A hunting party in north-western Romania, which drew many local and foreign businessmen, ended on Sunday with what media and green activists called “true carnage”- over 150 wild boars were killed. The hunt was organised by tennis player turned businessman Ion Tiriac, who is also one of the country’s richest men.

Tiriac holds the lease to the Balc hunting facilities in north west Romania, where the gathering took place. With him were some 30 guests, including businessmen Wolfgang Porsche and Klaus Mangold of DaimlerChrysler, and Spanish banker Jose Merino Jimenez, according to local media reports.

“These kind of events are an excellent opportunity to socialise, make new friends and discuss politics or business,” said Elan Schwartzenberg, an Israeli with businesses in Romania, who was one of the few participants who agreed to speak about the hunting party.

While Ion Tiriac’s lawyers have argued that the boars are brought in from a local breeding facility and are not a protected species, environmentalists say the magnitude of the hunt and the involvement of so many top-level executives and politicians are matters of concern.

The international environmental group Vier Pfoten has criticised the size of the hunt. “It’s time that this kind of animal massacre comes to an end. We are not questioning the legality of this hunting event but its magnitude, as in the last six years around 1,200 wild boar were killed in the Balc contained area,” Veronica Tulpan, head of national program at the group, argued.

In the past, Romanian authorities also questioned the management of the animals in the Balc area and the legality of the contract under which the hunting ground was leased, though no irregularities were discovered.

In late 2004, the government of former prime minister Adrian Nastase granted Ion Tiriac a a 49-year lease on the Balc grounds without a public auction. Soon after Nastase lost elections but for several years he was among the participants at the hunting events in Balc.

In Romania, like in many other ex-communist countries, hunting has long been associated with the old nomenklatura. Former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu often hunted bears, wild boars, and black goats in the mountains.

Since 1990, hunting has become increasingly popular among rich foreigners and Romania’s nouveau riche and political elite.

Devastating End For Leah, The Dog Rescued in Texas fire

The fire-fighters worked so hard & seemed to get her breathing again, I can’t begin to imagine their grief, along with the family’s!”

The heart-warming tale of a dog rescued by Arlington, Texas fire-fighters has turned tragic.

According to Wednesday’s publication ofWFAA News, the dog, named “Leah,” who was saved from a fire thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of fire-fighters, has since passed away.

Initially, the prognosis for the dog’s recovery was promising.

Fire-fighters worked for an hour to revive the dog who was trapped inside of a house which was engulfed in flames.

But the damage to the dog’s body proved too much and she died on Sunday as a result.

Another pet, a cat, also died in the devastating blaze.

Those who learned of the fire-fighters  efforts were touched by their compassion and dedication to the ailing dog – Leah’s untimely death does not take away from their heroic efforts.

Dog set on fire – Man arrested over animal cruelty attack in Maghaberry

“I was just about to post the original story (I’m still behind) when I saw they had arrested an animal…anybody that sets a dog on fire for their own sadistic pleasure & entertainment can’t be called human!! I hope it’s not long before they find the other one, if indeed their were 2 of them who committed this heinous attack. But, I doubt very much he will be charged & receive the maximum 51 weeks in jail; abusers rarely do! It will probably be 20 weeks & possibly a fine, or both…I know what I would like to do to the cowardly little SXXT & I’m betting I wouldn’t be the only one!”

Police investigating an attack in which a dog was set on fire in County Antrim have arrested a 21-year-old man.

A three-year-old collie dog, called Cody, suffered serious injuries after it was doused with flammable liquid and set alight in Maghaberry nine days ago.

The PSNI had appealed for information about two men who were seen with the dog on Trummery Lane, close to a quarry at about 10:00 BST on 26 August.

The man was detained on Tuesday morning on suspicion of animal cruelty.

Suspects wanted over dog set on fire in Maghaberry

Police investigating an attack on a dog in Maghaberry have issued descriptions of two people they want to question.

The three-year-old collie suffered serious injuries after it was doused with flammable liquid and set alight on Maghaberry Road on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said two males were seen with the dog at 10:00 BST.

One is described as having dark hair and a faint moustache.

He was carrying a bottle of Buckfast and is said to have had an aggressive demeanour. Both are said to be of thin build with broad shoulders and between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in tall. 

The second person is thought to have been carrying a white plastic bag.

Police believe they may have been at a house party in Maghaberry the night before, and have appealed for anyone who may recognise the descriptions to contact them.

A dog has been set on fire by two teenagers in Maghaberry, County Antrim.

The attack happened on Sunday morning and the three-year-old collie has suffered serious injuries.

He described the attack as “inhumane” and said the dog is “fighting for its life”.

“I was up at the north coast on Saturday and came home to a pretty horrific story of a good friend of mine who lives at the bottom of the village of Maghaberry,” he said.

“Unfortunately his dog, a wee collie called Cody, was set on fire using lighter fluid on Sunday morning.

“I think it is just vandalism of the nastiest sort. “The dog is as friendly as they come. “Hopefully the poor thing can pull through.”

Mr Ferris said the owner of the dog had two small children and that the incident was “pretty disturbing” for the whole family.

“Getting your dog set on fire is a terrible thing to wake up to on a Sunday morning,” he added.

Mr Ferris said he hoped those responsible for the attack would be caught.

Outside the Twin City Animal Shelter, a friendly, tail-wagging chocolate lab comes to the fence, begging for affection. As she turns her head, a twinge of shock ensues — her neck, chest and both ears are covered in recent, still-open wounds. Gun shot wounds.

Twin City Animal Shelter volunteer Teah Pray is absolutely stunned that someone would inflict the injuries they did upon this chocolate lab found Sunday off Camp Five Road with gunshot wounds.

On Sunday night Heath and Dusty Pinske and their family were four-wheeling in a remote area off Camp Five Road when suddenly their son Carson said, “Hey, there’s a dog!” A closer look revealed a wet chocolate lab laying listless in the grass and barely moving.

As they tried to help, they discovered several wounds on the animal, which was covered in dried blood and still bleeding. They gathered the dog up, took her to town, called the Twin City Animal Shelter and after contacting Dr. Ken Ireland of Northern Hills Veterinary Clinic, decided that because the dog was not bleeding profusely at that time and that her injuries at that point did not appear to be life threatening, they would take her to the vet in the morning.

“I wasn’t sure if they were gunshot wounds or not,” Ireland said. “Most of the time, you just have one hole. This dog came in with multiple holes all over its body. I thought it had been attacked by an animal. To rule that out, we did x-rays and you can actually see metal. We found multiple sites of metal of different sizes. It appeared the dog had been shot more than once.

“She was pretty miserable when they brought her in,” Ireland added. “A pellet type wound, maybe buckshot is in her liver area, a bigger pellet from perhaps a pellet gun created a big wound on her chest. It entered the dog’s thorax on the left side and the bullet stayed in there. There appears to be one entry and one exit wound in one other area and three to four metal fragments in the neck.

Practically anywhere a person would normally put their hands to pet a dog or show them affection is now shaved, revealing wounds.

Ireland is still not certain if the holes in Dusty’s ears are gunshot wounds or the result of an animal attack, since there is no metal.

Whether Dusty the dog was dumped and shot, abused by an owner or shot at by a property owner, her story is still speculative.

Joe Harmon, chief deputy with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said that in a case like this there are many unknown circumstances surrounding the incident.

“There are such a variety of circumstances, so many variables we don’t know regarding whether or not a crime was committed,” Harmon said. “The law says that if you have livestock and a dog is attacking or worrying that livestock, then you can put the animal down.”

Harmon said that while there are animal cruelty laws against abusing animals, again, in this case, it would depend on what the circumstances and variables are……

Dewas: A 58-year-old man killed a leopard on Sunday with an axe after the animal attacked him in the Rampura forest under Bagli range in the district.

The animal subsequently bled to death, forest officials said here on Monday.

The Pennsylvania SPCA is offering a $1000 award for anyone with information on the crime.

On Sunday, a young female pit bull named Chloe was discovered on the 700 block of Gray Street, covered in severe burns, according to the SPCA.

Investigators are searching for the person or people responsible for the death of a dog by setting her on fire.

Investigators say she was initially brought to ACCT Philly, the city’s animal control shelter. Due to the severity of her injuries however she was soon transferred to the Pennsylvania SPCA as a case of animal cruelty.

Investigators say the dog appeared to have been doused with an accelerant and set on fire. She suffered extreme burns on her entire body. Veterinarians at the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Shelter Hospital evaluated Chloe and gave her pain medications as well as initial treatment of the burns. The dog was then transferred to rescue for intensive care but later died from her injuries, according to the SPCA.

The Pennsylvania SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Department is currently investigating. Investigators say they already located the dog’s owner and believe Chloe lived near the location where she was discovered. Investigators also believe there are multiple witnesses who have information on the people or person responsible. The Pennsylvania SPCA is offering a $1000 award for anyone with information on the crime.

Dog Struggling to Survive After Being Set on Fire

Investigators are searching for the person or people responsible for setting a dog on fire and leaving the animal to die.

On Sunday, a young female pit bull named Chloe was discovered on the 700 block of Gray Street, covered in severe burns, according to the SPCA.

Investigators say she was initially brought to ACCT Philly, the city’s animal control shelter. Due to the severity of her injuries however she was soon transferred to the Pennsylvania SPCA as a case of animal cruelty.

Investigators say the dog appeared to have been doused with an accelerant and set on fire. She suffered extreme burns on her entire body. Veterinarians at the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Shelter Hospital evaluated Chloe and gave her pain medications as well as initial treatment of the burns.

The dog is being transferred to a specialty hospital through the Animal Alliance of New Jersey in Lambertville where she will receive intensive treatment.

“This is an extreme case of animal abuse,” said Lisa Germanis, V.M.D, head veterinarian at the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Shelter Hospital.  “At this point, the next couple of days will be critical as to whether the dog is able to survive the injuries it endured.”

The Pennsylvania SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Department is currently investigating.

Investigators say they already located the dog’s owner and believe Chloe lived near the location where she was discovered. Investigators also believe there are multiple witnesses who have information on the people or person responsible.

The Pennsylvania SPCA is offering a $500 award for anyone with information on the crime.
