Unfortunately, the lives of turkeys on factory farms are short, brutal and filled with fear, violence and prolonged suffering.

While wild turkeys are sleek, agile and able to fly, commercial turkeys have been selectively bred to grow so large, so quickly, that many of them suffer from painful bone defects, hip joint lesions, crippling foot and leg deformities, and fatal heart attacks.

This genetic manipulation creates birds who are so large they cannot even reproduce naturally, rendering artificial semen collection and insemination the sole means of turkey reproduction at breeding facilities like this one.

Even though domestic turkeys have been genetically manipulated for enormous growth, these birds still retain their gentle, inquisitive, and social natures.

Turkeys are “sentient vertebrates and all the available evidence shows that they have a very similar range of feelings as mammalian species,” Dr. Ian Duncan has stated. “Poultry can suffer by feeling pain, fear and stress.”

In fact, animal behaviourists, veterinarians, and scientists now agree that turkeys are sensitive and intelligent animals with their own unique personalities, much like the dogs and cats we all know and love.

Although cruelty and violence are standard practice for Canada’s turkey producers, caring consumers can help end the needless suffering of turkeys and other farmed animals by choosing a compassionate vegan diet.

In 2013, a COK undercover investigator worked inside Quanah Cattle Co. (QCC), an animal agribusiness company in Kersey, Colorado that purchases newborn calves from surrounding dairy factories and temporarily confines them before shipping them out to be raised for their meat.

Just days old, many of these calves – some of whom still have their umbilical cords hanging from their bodies – are too feeble or frightened to walk steadily.  As our footage shows, in the process of being moved on and off trucks, these fragile animals are violently dragged by their legs, pulled by their ears, lifted by their tails, kicked, thrown, slammed, and flipped.

Animal handling expert Dr. Temple Grandin of Colorado State University decried the cruelty seen in our video, calling it “severe abuse” and “not acceptable” while further noting that “If this facility had been a slaughter plant, the USDA would have shut them down.”

The cruelty to calves uncovered in this investigation was so shocking and violent that COK turned evidence over to local authorities, and we are now working with them on this case.

The Dairy Industry:  Most of the dairy calves purchased by QCC are male – they’re considered unwanted industry byproducts since they’re unable to produce milk. After being trucked in and unloaded at QCC, they’ll be confined in crates or hutches for around a week and then loaded back on trucks to be shipped out, sold, and raised for their meat. Marketed as veal or beef, depending on their age when slaughtered, these young animals are the often forgotten victims of the dairy industry. Read more.

Important Update: On Nov. 20, 2013, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office retaliated against the courageous whistleblower who uncovered and reported the callous abuse of newborn calves – they’re alleging that she broke the law.  What is her alleged “crime”? Witnessing and reporting animal abuse – in other words, she’s being punished for telling the truth about the cruelty that happened at Quanah.  Watch this report on Fox-31 in Denver.

Let’s be clear:  Witnessing – and exposing – animal abuse is not a crime!

Here’s what happened: After meticulously and extensively researching the law and reviewing all of the damning evidence of routine animal cruelty at Quanah, we presented a strong case to authorities revealing illegal activities that would have otherwise continued unabated. This evidence led to charges being brought against three employees who participated in the violence against calves – violence that includes dragging these young animals by their ears and legs as well as lifting them by their tails.

If COK’s investigator hadn’t blown the whistle, these abuses would likely still be occurring right now. 

The charge against our investigator is unsupported by the law, and it reeks of political motivation fueled by an agribusiness industry that continues to lash out in desperation aiming to stop undercover investigators from exposing the truth.

I live in Colorado, and I recently heard about Taylor Radig who was working as an undercover investigator to document cruelty at Quanah Cattle Company. She filmed calves being thrown and kicked around and dragged by their ears, tails, and legs.

Because of her bravery, 3 workers were charged with animal cruelty on November 15. But a week later, Taylor was also charged with animal cruelty!

Respected animal welfare expert Dr. Temple Grandin of Colorado State University saw this footage and used terms like “rough,” “not acceptable,” and “severe abuse” to describe what was going on. So why is the woman who blew the whistle on this cruelty herself being charged with animal cruelty? It makes no sense. Witnessing and reporting animal abuse is not a crime.

The group Taylor was trying to help is called Compassion Over Killing. Does anyone actually think it’s a good use of taxpayer dollars and the time of our public officials to treat Taylor like a criminal who committed an act of animal cruelty? Does anyone think she had anything but kindness in her heart when she set out to document these cruel acts?

Dear DiGoirno,

I was disgusted to see undercover video footage of workers kicking, beating, and stabbing cows at a DiGiorno cheese supplier in Wisconsin called Wiese Brothers Farms. The video also shows cows who are too sick or injured to even stand being callously tortured and dragged by their fragile legs and necks with a chain attached to a tractor.

DiGiorno should not tolerate this blatant animal abuse.

DiGiorno has the power and the ethical responsibility to ensure the cows who produce milk for your cheese are protected from needless violence and suffering.

It’s time for DiGiorno to adopt meaningful animal welfare policies for its dairy suppliers, including:

* Zero tolerance for animal abuse
* Requirement that suppliers provide a clean and sanitary environment for cattle
* Proper care and transportation for sick, injured, and downed animals
* Elimination of mutilations without painkillers, including tail docking, a cruel and outdated practice that involves

Cows are highly intelligent and friendly animals who can form long-lasting, deep bonds of friendship with other cows and even their human caregivers. Cows have extremely complex social groups and tend to choose the herd leaders for their intelligence, experience and good social skills.

Versus:-

Researchers have shown that factory farmed cows kept in groups of more than 200 become stressed and will continually fight for dominance. Having bonds of friendship broken whenever cows are sold to other farms or slaughterhouses also heightens their stress.

Much like humans, cows mourn the deaths of those they love. They even shed tears over the loss of friends who are separated from them. The bond between a mother cow and her calf is particularly strong and cows are widely known to cry out for their calves if they go missing.

Versus

Like humans and other mammals, cows only produce milk when they are pregnant or nursing, so the dairy industry keeps cows in a constant cycle of pregnancy and lactation. Newborn calves are dragged away from their mothers within a day of birth so that all of their milk can be sold for profit.

Cows are smart and sophisticated animals who can even understand cause-and-effect relationships, which is a sign of advanced cognitive abilities. Not only do cows swiftly figure out solutions to problems, they find the challenge wonderfully exciting.

Versus

The only thing cows on dairy farms learn is that they are likely to be kicked or beaten on their way to the milking parlor two or three times a day. A study by the dairy industry indicates that nearly 40 percent of cows are lame because of intensive confinement, filth and unnaturally high milk production.

In August 2012, an undercover investigator with Mercy For Animals documented heartbreaking animal abuse at Bettencourt Dairies, a major Burger King dairy supplier, including:

  • Workers and management viciously beating, kicking, punching, and shocking cows and violently twisting their tails in order to deliberately inflict pain
  • Workers and management dragging a downed cow by her neck using a chain attached to a tractor
  • Extremely unsafe and unsanitary conditions, including feces-covered floors that cause cows to regularly slip, fall, and injure themselves
  • Sick or injured cows suffering from open wounds, broken bones, and infected udders left to suffer without proper veterinary care

Expert Opinions

After reviewing the undercover footage, Dr. Temple Grandin, the world’s leading expert in farmed-animal welfare, stated: “The atrocious treatment of cows at this dairy is an indicator of a total lack of management supervision.”

In a joint statement, Dr. Bernard Rollin, a distinguished professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University, and William Wailes, a dairy specialist and head of the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University, declared: “Of the dozens of such videos that we have watched, this one was the most horrific and the most upsetting. … Never have we seen such outright sadistic pleasure taken by workers in animal suffering.”

A Mercy For Animals investigation reveals sadistic animal torture at Bettencourt Dairies – a major Burger King cheese supplier in Idaho.

The investigation has already led to three workers, including a manager of the dairy, being charged with criminal cruelty to animals. 

Experts

Independent, nationally and world-renowned academic and professional experts in farmed animal welfare and veterinary medicine reviewed the video footage from MFA’s undercover investigation. Below are some of their statements:

Temple Grandin, PhD, PAS

Dr. Grandin is considered the world’s leading expert on farmed-animal welfare. She is an associate professor of livestock behaviour at Colorado State University and an animal welfare advisor to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the meat industry. In response to this investigation, Dr. Grandin states:

I watched the dairy video and the abuse of the downed cow with electric prods and dragging with the tractor was horrific animal abuse. If this abusive treatment had occurred at a slaughter plant, the plant would have been shut down by the USDA. The employees were constantly beating and kicking animals as hard as they could. The atrocious treatment of cows at this dairy is an indicator of a total lack of management supervision.

Bernard E. Rollin, PhD

Dr. Rollin is a distinguished professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University and is well known internationally for his over 30 years of work in animal welfare. He was a major architect of federal laws protecting laboratory animals, and has written two books on farmed-animal welfare. He serves on the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production and is an expert witness on animal welfare issues in the United States and abroad.

William Wailes, BS

Mr. Wailes is an extension dairy specialist for the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University. He is also an internationally renowned dairy expert, who has owned and been involved with dairy farms all of his life.

A joint statement by Dr. Rollin and Mr. Wailes states:

Never have we seen such outright sadistic pleasure taken by workers in animal suffering, including gratuitous shocking of the cows (quintessentially sweet and gentle creatures); dragging them with chains; and in what is arguably the worst sequence, one worker savagely beating the cows with a cane, while laughing and screaming maniacally.

The overall impression is of a Hieronymous Bosch vision of hell for cows. The physical conditions, flooded walkways and slick footing, completely replicate the uncaring attitude of owners and managers, as do the docked tails of the cows, a procedure now recognized as useless, painful, and stressful.

The only way to stop such outrageous behaviour is to serve notice that society will not tolerate it. This means…that not only sadistic workers must be prosecuted and serve jail time, but so too the owners and managers, since they clearly demonstrated that the normal human motivations of animal productivity and economic returns do not move them.

Debra Teachout, DVM, MVSc

Dr. Teachout is a practising veterinarian who graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. She also holds an advanced degree in veterinary clinical pathology from Western College of Veterinary Medicine and has completed additional coursework in farmed-animal welfare. Dr. Teachout states:

In this video the animal handling is so brutal and callous in its obvious intent to cause pain, fear and injury, that it is frankly astonishing and disturbing. The conduct of the workers toward the cows is deplorable.

The observed culture of cruelty at this farm has obviously been allowed to flourish for so long, brutality has become the norm. These cows are serving as targets of vicious intent to harm in a management system that is either absent or complicit in a facility culture that exudes violence and abuse. The cows on this farm are suffering from pain, injury and fear. Their welfare has not only been ignored, it has been threatened by abusive personnel and filthy unsafe living conditions. I have rarely seen such brutal treatment of farm animals, and this farm must be shut down immediately. Those responsible for the cruel treatment of these cows must be held accountable and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. They should also never be allowed to be responsible for or work around animals again.

Armaiti May, DVM, CVA

Dr. May is a practising veterinarian with experience treating farmed animals, who received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. Dr. May states:

The level of disregard for animals shown and the dangerous conditions at this facility are outrageously appalling. My overall impression is that the facility where this footage was taken is that it lacks regard for basic welfare of animals in its care and does not have proper supervision of its workers. In addition, there are poor sanitation practices and unsafe working conditions which endanger both human and animal health and safety. I recommend that charges of animal cruelty be brought against the workers involved and that the farm be shut down for cruel treatment of animals and lack of proper oversight of its workers.

Jonathan Balcombe, PhD

Dr. Balcombe is an ethologist with bachelors and masters degrees in biology, and a doctorate in animal behaviour from the University of Tennessee. He is the author of four books on animal behaviour, as well as more than 40 book chapters and peer-reviewed journal papers. Dr. Balcombe states:

This footage shows grossly negligent and savagely cruel treatment of dairy cows by workers. The conditions are treacherously slippery, leading to injuries, downed cows, and workers who beat and torment the animals to try to get them to move. This is a concentration camp for miserable cows. It is totally unacceptable. The operation should be shut down immediately and the workers charged with animal cruelty.

Lee Schrader, DVM

Dr. Schrader is a practising veterinarian, who obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Schrader has over 35 years of experience working with animals, particularly animals with serious, difficult-to-diagnose disorders. Dr. Schrader states:

The brutality and viciousness of the workers in this facility toward the cows is stunning. The animals are electrically shocked, beaten with canes, kicked and jumped on, and subjected to aggressive extension of their tails, resulting in signs of severe pain and fear in the cows. … The treatment of these cows is sadistic and unconscionable.

The treatment of these cows is brutally inhumane. The workers are cruel and obviously do not know how to handle cattle correctly. The filthy, wet barn results in severe stress and injuries to the cows. This facility should be closed immediately.

“And people wonder why I am vegetarian. I just can’t call myself vegan because I do eat free range eggs from my friends. But I don’t drink or eat anything else from an animal. I drink soya milk & cheese… I would be 2 faced if I ate meat, then posted horrific abuse like this, on here!

A year ago, Four Corners’ expose of the live export industry, ‘A Bloody Business,’ horrified Australians, sparking public outrage, and prompting thousands to take to the street to demand an end to the trade. The program was to prove the catalyst for a major shakeup of the industry, when, just six days after the Four Corners program went to air, the Australian Government issued a six month ban on live export to Indonesia.

Now, a year on from the airing of the program that drastically altered public perception regarding Australia’s treatment of its livestock, what has changed?

Australia is currently the largest exporter of sheep and cattle in the world. According to animal welfare organisation, Animals Australia, to date the live trade industry has sent over 160 million animals to slaughter in over a dozen countries where no laws exist to protect them from cruelty. Millions of these animals have not even reached their destination; dying as a result of horrendous conditions onboard these ships.

The Government responded to the allegations of cruelty with the implementation of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS), a system that aims to improve industry standards and increase accountability. Exporters are required to comply with the requirements of the ESCAS; following the movement and welfare of every Australian animal from paddock, to boat, to abattoir, ensuring welfare standards are met and maintained.

However, the RSPCA has criticised the ESCAS for ‘clearly failing to protect animals,’ after theABC’s Lateline revealed cruelty in Indonesian abattoirs to be ongoing, and two Australian companies were found guilty of 37 breaches of the system.

Animals Australia Campaign Director, Lyn White, similarly echoed the sentiments of the RSPCA.  ‘[This reveals] a fatally flawed system that is reliant on irregular third party audits that are paid for by the exporter – this is not an auditing system that can be deemed independent and therefore relied upon,’ Ms. White said.

However, conditions for exported livestock have undoubtedly improved. Animals Australia reports that prior to the Four Corner’s report, and ensuing investigations and campaigns, 95% of Australian animals exported to Indonesia were slaughtered while fully conscious. Today, the majority of exported livestock is stunned prior to slaughter, although the practice has not been made mandatory.  Mark 1 restraint boxes, described by cattle industry advisor Temple Grandin, as ‘[violating] every humane standard there is all around the world,’ have also since been banned.

For animal welfare organisations such as Animals Australia, the campaign will not be considered a success until the live trade industry is completely shut down. Their ultimate goal is to see the export of live Australian animals banned; following the example of nations such as New Zealand, which banned the live export of animals for slaughter in 2003 (although live animals may still be internationally exported for use in breeding programs).

California Livestock Market Abuse Exposed

Livestock auctions across America often serve as the way stations between farms and slaughterhouses for millions of cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep and other animals who are raised, bought and sold for slaughter. But how are these animals treated as they await their fate?

A new Mercy For Animals undercover investigation at a livestock auction in California has revealed an ongoing pattern of cruelty, egregious violence, and severe neglect.

egregious violence, and severe neglect.

Hidden-camera footage secretly recorded by an MFA undercover investigator working at Ontario Livestock Sales outside of Los Angeles, California, reveals:

  • “downed” animals – those too sick or injured to even stand or walk on their own – being left to slowly suffer and die without food, water or veterinary care;
  • sick, injured and dying animals being kicked, pushed and dragged into transport trucks to be sold and slaughtered for human consumption;
  • workers throwing, beating, stomping on and kicking animals in the face and body;
  • baby goats being carelessly picked up by their necks and then kicked or tossed around;
  • workers grabbing, dragging and throwing animals by their heads, necks, ears, horns, tails, and legs; and
  • birds stuffed into bags and goats, sheep and other animals overcrowded into small pens, forcing animals to stand on and even trample each other.

California law prohibits auctions from selling or holding “downed” animals who are too sick or injured to walk. Yet, at this auction, these animals were sold, transported and left to suffer and die for extended periods of time. Downed animals are more likely to carry diseases that threaten public health if allowed to enter the human food supply.

Management at this auction witnessed downed animals and even participated in routine violence and cruelty to animals at this facility in clear violation of California law.

Upon reviewing the undercover footage, Temple Grandin, PhD, animal welfare advisor to the USDA, wrote: “The handling was very rough and kicking animals is not acceptable. If this auction had been a federally inspected meat packing plant, they would have suspended inspection and shut them down.”

Dr. Bernard Rollin, Distinguished Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, also condemned the operation, stating: “The workers shown kicking, beating, dragging, pummeling, throwing, choking the animals are either totally ignorant of proper animal handling, or, what is more likely the case, are gratuitously unconcerned with the suffering of the animals.”

Following the undercover investigation, MFA immediately alerted law enforcement authorities to violations of California’s anti-cruelty laws at Ontario Livestock Sales and presented a detailed legal complaint and meticulously compiled evidence of such violations to the San Bernardino County District Attorney. The evidence demonstrated an ongoing pattern of cruelty, neglect and needless suffering.

As a result of MFA’s investigation, and a follow up investigation by law enforcement, seven employees and the auction’s owner have been charged with a total of 21 counts of animal cruelty. The case is ongoing.

Sadly, these types of abuses are commonplace at auction houses nationwide. As MFA continues to expose the unconscionable cruelties inherent in animal agriculture, and to diligently pursue justice by aiding prosecutions of animal abusers, consumers still hold the greatest power of all to end the needless suffering and death of farmed animals by adopting a compassionate, vegetarian diet.
