Investigators in Suffolk County, New York, are trying to determine if foul play is behind the death of a dog who was found floating in a canal off of Long Island on Thursday morning, reported NECN News.
A West Islip resident made the troubling find and reached out to the local animal control for help.

The dog, described as an adult, female Rottweiler mix, had a chain and cinder block attached to her neck; a necropsywill be done to see if the dog was dead or alive when she was placed into the water.
Investigators with the Suffolk County SPCAhope to determine if the dog was intentionally drowned, or if it was an attempt for an “at sea” burial.
Aside from the disturbing items found on the dog’s body, there were no other obvious signs of trauma.

“That dog was not my pet…he was my son,” said Andrew Zander, the dog’s owner.
When Zander got a call from Enfield Police a few weeks ago about the death of his dog, Bandit, he couldn’t believe it.
“I immediately broke down,” Zander said.
Investigators said Carla Bushnell was responsible, according to police.
Zander said Bushnell was a family friend and he asked her to continuously check on Bandit at his apartment. He was away for a few months to help his wife at a Massachusetts hospital.
“There was no reason for my wife or I to have any doubts she would be a good caretaker. She insisted she wanted to take care of them,” Zander explained.
According to police, a postal worker saw mail piling up outside Zander’s place in November and became suspicious. The carrier then looked in the window and saw the dog dead on the floor.
Exam results showed there was absolutely no food in Bandit’s system.
Carla Bushnell was arrested Thursday night and charged with animal cruelty. Investigators said she was liable because she made an agreement to watch the dog and Zander left instructions for Bushnell with her name on them on his kitchen cabinet.
“The dog had been starved for at least a month. Carla said in her statement that she was there every day,” Zander said.
NBC Connecticuttried talking to Bushnell after she bonded out of jail onFriday, but she would not answer any questions.
Zander hoped for an explanation.
“I would have rather seen him pass by old age or hit by a car than to starve to death,” he said.
He wants Bushnell held accountable for the suffering his dog went through.
“Few words are needed to describe this zoo, dirty, overcrowded, dilapidated; hell on earth for it’s poor residents. Many need moving to specialist zoo’s who can undo the harm caused at this disgusting hovel. There are rumours that meat brought in for the animals is shared amongst the staff to take home either for themselves or to sell on; that would account for the animals being so thin! Also talk of wildlife trafficking as some animals have gone missing in the past!

A Sumatran tigerat Surabaya Zoo inSurabaya, East Java, died on early Thursday after suffering digestive and respiratory problems for two years.
The zoo’s curator, Penta, said that Rosek, a 13-year-old Sumatran tiger, was founddead in its cage by a zookeeper. “We had been trying to treat Rosek and gave it enzymes for digestion. We also took the animal outside its cage for a walk and some sun,” Penta told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
He said Surabaya Zoo now had only 10 Sumatran tigers, seven of which were females. One female tiger is currently undergoing treatment for an illness similar to that of Rosek. “Her name is Melani, see her picture below, it’s hard to believe a tiger in a zoo, could be left to get so bad!”
Internal conflict has plagued Surabaya Zoo since 1998 and peaked in 2007, when a number of animals died allegedly due to poor treatment. On Sept.8, 2012, Santi, a white tiger, died due to paralysis. “The video below is of a white tiger”
Data show that almost 250 animals at Surabaya Zoo died in 2011, including a mountain goat that suffered digestive problems.
An autopsy found plastic bags in its stomach. The zoo’s veterinary team also found 25 stones in the stomach of a dead crocodile.
From June to August 2010, 20 animals died at the zoo, including a Sumatran tiger and 13 baby komodo dragons. Most of the animals died from pneumonia, dehydration caused by diarrhoea and malnutrition, while other problems included a dirty and poor environment and lack of nutritious food. (asw/ebf)
Melani was born at the Surabaya Zoo 15 years ago and has been suffering from an undiagnosed digestive disorder for the past five years. Her weight has dropped to less than 60 kilograms (132 pounds), down from 75 kilograms and below the normal range of 75-110 kilograms. Her eyes look sunken and bones can be seen beneath her skin. “See the video below!”

“I think euthanasia is the best option to end her suffering because it is difficult to be cured,” said Tony Sumampouw, chairman of Indonesia’s zoo association, who was appointed to oversee the Surabaya Zoo after the government took control of it in 2010.
He added that Melani’s illness is likely the result of mismanagement and poor nutrition since she was young.
Melani is one of 10 Sumatran tigers — the world’s most critically endangered tiger subspecies — left in the zoo following the death two weeks ago of Rozek, a 13-year-old male. He suffered similar gastrointestinal problems for four years.

The zoo’s remaining Sumatran tigers, which are part of a breeding program, are kept in dirty, cramped cages along with 10 Bengal tigers. All appear healthy, but remain at great risk, Sumampouw said.
Chaerul Saleh, the WWF wildlife group’s campaign coordinator on endangered species protection, said he hopes the latest tiger cases will force government and zoo authorities to do more to safeguard the animals. Strong action is needed to change the culture of neglect and corruption within the facility, he said.
The zoo has been plagued by uncontrolled breeding, a lack of funding for general animal welfare and suspicions that staff members may be involved in illegal wildlife trafficking.

Questioned in Berlin, Surabaya Mayor Ashamed of Zoo
TEMPO.CO, Surabaya – Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini received many questions about the management conflict in Surabaya Zoo (KBS) when she visited Berlin a few months ago. As the result of the continuing conflicts, some animals died and abandoned. “I was truly ashamed when they highlighted KBS. I could not do anything,”
Risma could only explain that the management of the Zoo is conducted by the Ministry of Forestry and not her authority. “They asked, how does your country manage this? I am honestly ashamed at the time,” said Risma.
Melani the Sumatran tiger heaves herself painfully to her feet, walks to the fence and is hand-fed a few pieces of chicken cut into small chunks. She’s skin and bone, but she eats less than a child might before returning to chew, like a sick domestic cat, on the grass.
There are less than 400 of Melani’s kind still roaming the dwindling forests of Sumatra, and soon this zoo-bound specimen will also be dead, after spending most of her life in squalor in Surabaya Zoo.
She suffers from an unidentified wasting disease which means her food, even when it’s minced, passes through her, almost entirely undigested.
The Surabaya Zoo is a nightmare, plagued by uncontrolled breeding, a lack of funding for general animal welfare & staff are involved in illegal wildlife trafficking.
Zookeepers have been taking meat meant for the tigers and selling it in the local market. The tigers are emaciated & the 180 pelicans packed so tightly they cannot unfurl their wings without hitting a neighbour.

FANTASTIC NEWS – MELANI. Not long ago, I have been informed by Zoos and Aquaria and Taman Safari, Indonesia, that the beautiful tigress Melani, has been safety transported and arrived at Taman Safari.
She is eating well, however her front and lower K9’s are looking quite rotten. Her demeanour is wonderful and she is now currently under going further veterinary testing. This is Melani when she arrived hours ago at Taman Safari.
On a side note, we understand that people are very passionate about this case, however please DO NOT write abusive or threatening letters to either Zoos and Aquaria or Taman Safari, as these are NOT the people who have had control over Surabaya Zoo.
In any case, if you write, please keep your language polite, however instead of cluttering up the good peoples email boxs with your demands, please work together in a positive way. As you can see, Melani is now getting the correct care she needs, she is safe and in the best hands now.

49 Animals Transferred From Surabaya Zoo – At last some are rescued (they call it transferred)
TEMPO.CO, Banyuwangi – As many as 49 animal collections from Surabaya Zoo (KBS) were transferred to Mirah Fantasia, Banyuwangi. The transferred animals include elephants, orang utans, iguanas, hippos, bekantans, gazelles, and some other mammals and birds.
From Surabaya, the animals were transferred by trucks to Mirah Fantasia. Rahmat Suharta, the Chief of Health Department from Surabaya Zoo, said that some of the animals must be transferred because KBS has been overloaded.
Rahmat also informed that Mirah Fantasia has already gained a conservation center operational license from the Natural Resources Conservation Office.
Ketut Suwardika, Mirah Fantasia Deputy Director, expected that the new collections will increase the number of visitors.

Tony Sumampau was brought in by the Indonesian government to lead a temporary team to improve conditions when it took over the privately run zoo in 2010. He now spends two days a week trying to teach zoo staff how to care for animals kept in cramped and unsanitary living conditions for far too long.
Before Sumampau arrived, about 25 of the zoo’s 4,000 animals died each month, many of them prematurely, from disease and neglect. Among them was a cheetah, a gift from South Africa’s President, whose leg was bitten off by a tiger and later died.
Poor sanitation and uncontrolled breeding also remain serious challenges for the zoo.
Lutvi Achmad, the head of the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Center, who works with Sumampau, told CNN, “This overpopulation has been going on for so long, there’s inbreeding and for sure this won’t be a good thing for the Surabaya Zoo.”
The biggest problem Sumampau says is the lack of understanding of animal welfare and conservation. He is slowly training the zoo’s 70 keepers but faces resistance from some who have worked in the zoo for years, even decades.

A High Point woman has been charged with animal cruelty according to the Randolph County Health Department.
Mimi Cooper, public health director, confirmed that Donna Burkhart, of 1205 Blain St. in High Point, has been charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. She also faces a felony cruelty to animals charge from March.
Cooper said Burkhart housed her animals on Kimery Lane in Liberty and the animals were in poor conditions without food and water. “We started getting calls about these horses years ago,” Cooper said. “When we would go, the horses looked fine.
When we would contact Burkhart she would tell us that she fed and watered her horses.” Cooper said in March that all changed. “One of our officers was there checking out a complaint and we found two donkeys in horrendous condition,” Cooper said.
One donkey had a halter that apparently was put on when he was young and had never been taken off. According to Cooper, he was not socialized and could not be touched by humans.
The other donkey had not had his feet trimmed in at least a year, according to Cooper. “It’s very painful to have to walk on and it’s like walking on your fingernails,” she said.
According to Cooper, Burkhartsurrendered both of the donkeys to the health department, a vet was called out, and the team sedated the donkey with the embedded collar.
“He was so stressed and in such poor condition that he died while we were giving himsedation,” Cooper said. “The other one we brought back to the shelter, had his feet fixed and found him an adoptive home.”
Cooper said that they continued to monitor the other horses that Burkhart had on the property. They received a call one day that the horses were without food and water.
After leaving a note and trying to call Burkhart, Cooper said she went to the Randolph County District Attorney and the Magistrate’s Office to get a warrant to seize the seven remaining horses on the property.
“Three of the horses are in very poor condition and the other three are in okay condition,” Cooper said.
She said that she does not know when Burkhart will go to court on the charges. Burkhart could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Tampa, Fla. (WTSP-TV) – A Tampa man is facing animal cruelty charges after he allegedly killed his family’s pet dog, and then cut the animal up for future meals.

Investigators say 25-year-old Thomas Elliot Hugginsstrangled the youngpit bull mix pup on Thursday morning, and then cut the animal into quarters and put the remains in the freezer.
A family member called police after learning what happened. Arriving officers say they found the dog’s ribs cooked in a pot on the stove, and the animal’s head was in the garbage.
An investigator with Hillsborough Animal Services tells 10 News that Huggins “expertly” cut the animal apart, and this may not be the first time he’s done this.
Huggins was taken into custody and charged for the inhumane and cruel killing of the dog, and is currently in jail on $2,000 bond.
The owner of a Fort Collins dog training and boarding facility accused of animal cruelty will plead her case in front of a jury this fall.
Larimer Humane Society last October cited Tami Carrasco for animal cruelty after a 13-week-old purebred German shepherd, Baron, was returned by the school to his owners with blunt force trauma and injuries that resulted in the surgical removal of the dog’s right eye.

Carrasco, who has owned American Dog School for more than 20 years and received multiple accolades from clients and the “Best of Fort Collins” awards, had been training the puppy for five or six sessions before he was boarded at the facility.
Carrasco refused in April a plea bargain that would have required an anger management evaluation, no contact with animals during 24 months of unsupervised probation and no jail time in exchange for a guilty plea.
In a Thursday disposition, she pleaded not guilty to the alleged misdemeanor offense and requested a two-day jury trial, set to begin Oct. 2. Joseph Gavaldon, Carrasco’s attorney, said he “fully expects” expert testimony during the trial.
If found guilty, Carrasco could face 6-18 months in jail and a fine of $500 to $5,000.
A veterinarian’s report from Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital, provided by Baron’s owner, detailed multiple fractures to the puppy’s face and a condition where a pocket of blood forms behind the eyeball. All injuries were confirmed by a CT scan of Baron’s skull.
A veterinarian at the hospital told the Coloradoan shortly after Baron was evaluated that his injuries were similar to the trauma a dog would experience in a “head-on collision with a car.”

Police said an intoxicated woman from Ravenswood beat her puppy to death. She’s now been charged with felonyanimal cruelty.
Marlyn Carte, 50, was arrested Thursday night at her apartment on Joe Short Drive.
“I’ve seen a lot of abuse cases. I have never, ever seen anything like this,” Jackson County Humane Officer Sheila Chambers said. “The woman had the puppy around the neck. There’s no way it could have defended itself.”
Police said Carte beat her 9-week-old puppy, Mojo, to death. Neighbours said she took in the dog about three weeks ago in an effort to save it’s life.
“She loved the dog when she wasn’t drinking, but when she’s drinking, you know, you just gotta look over her,” neighbour Diane Lane said.
Police said neighbors called 911 after witnessing Carte beat the dog. When police got to her apartment, they said she was sitting in the floor crying, and said her puppy was dead after it fell down the stairs.
Neighbours told police a much different story, and said Carte picked up the dog by the neck, punched it in the face, and vigorously shook it, while cursing and screaming she was going to kill it.
It was then that she allegedly opened her apartment door and threw it inside.
“She went into detail that you could hear the puppy hit the wall, and you could hear the puppy yelp,” Patrol man J.E. Cogar of the Ravenswood Police Department said.
Police said the puppy was dead inside a cardboard box when they went inside. Neighbours said she became upset when the dog used the bathroom in the apartment.
“I try to save dog’s lives, saves animals lives, and I have to put up with that,” Chambers said.
Carte is in the South Central Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Neighbors called 911 Thursday night, terrified after they said they saw a woman beating her 9-week old puppy and screaming she was going to kill the animal.
Marlyn Carte has been charged with felony animal cruelty. When police got to her apartment on Joe Short Drive, they said she was sitting at the bottom of her stairs crying, and said the dog had fallen down the stairs and was dead.
Witnesses told police they saw her pick up the puppy by the neck, punch it in the face and vigorously shake it, saying she was going to kill it.
Then she allegedly opened her apartment door, slung the puppy inside and witnesses said they could hear the dog hit the wall and yelp. On her way to the police station, police said she admitted to killing the puppy, known as Mojo to neighbors.
Police also said she was extremely intoxicated. The humane officer who responded to the call said this is the worst case of animal abuse she’s ever seen
Neighbors who called 911 said Carte had rescued the dog from animal abuse.
Humane Society officials say Shawn Robinson plead guilty to 16 counts of animal cruelty, five of which were for failing to provide proper veterinary care for the puppies. And the other 11 charges were for leaving animals, including his four other dogs, in neglect.
Police say Robinson was trying to sell the puppies for quick cash.
The 14-week-old puggle puppies had apparently developed a highly contagious virus, known as Canine parvovirus, with symptoms such as dehydration, fever, vomiting and diarrhea. Officials say the disease can be fatal, resulting in a very painful death.
Robinson had apparently sought treatment for the puppies, but said he could not afford the costly treatments.
Police say the puppies were left out on the porch in a shoe-box for two weeks and not treated. They died within four days.
Officials say in the plea agreement, Robinson must surrender his four other dogs by June 21 to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter. They also say Robinson must pay a $1,500 fine for the dead puppies, as well as court costs.
According to court documents, Robinson has a criminal history that includes theft, fighting and filing a false police report.
Officials say Robinson is not allowed to own any pets for four years. If he does he could go to jail.
Robinson will be serving 100 days of house arrest.
A 29-year-old Leighton schizophrenic, who claimed that his pet rats talked to him, has been found guilty of animal cruelty after one was found with four shattered legs.
RSPCA inspectors called at Adam Cheeseborough’s Hockliffe Road flat after reports of a rodent infestation. They found, Luton Magistrates Court heard on Thursday, up to 80 rats running loose through every room and there was an overpowering smell of urine and faeces.
Some were crammed in a filthy cage which had no food. A drowned rat lay on a windowsill, another was found with half a tail and one rat was discovered suffering from a huge cancerous growth.

But worst of all was a rat whose four limbs were broken and turned the wrong way around, with the bone jutting through its wounds. It was so traumatised that it was unable to squeak and could only move by crawling on his bare bones.
He later had to be put to sleep by a vet.
Cheeseborough appeared in court charged with one offence of causing unnecessary suffering to a rat by failing to provide veterinary care and two charges of failing to meet the welfare needs of two other rats. He denied all three charges which had been brought by the RSPCA.
he animal’s owner told inspectors that the rat had jumped out of a third-floor window. He wasn’t found until the next day and Cheeseborough refused to take it to the vets because he feared the pet would be put down.
As the inspectors collected the flat’s rats they found one on Cheeseborough’s bed suffering with a lump and another behind a piece of furniture with half its tail missing and the stump looking red and swollen. It was later operated on but suffered a heart attack and died. None of the animals had previously received veterinary treatment.
Cheeseborough told the court that he had kept rats for up to 15 years, slept and bathed with them and even took them out with him to the shops.
“I had more than 70 rats and I loved them all. I kept the females in one cage and the males in another and I’d let out one cage at a time to allow them to run around.
“Somehow, one night, one of the male rats got out through the window and I found it the next morning in the grass. I thought that it was waiting for me.
“I picked him up and didn’t think anything was wrong with him. When I got back to the flat I realised that he couldn’t walk but I was nurturing him back to health. If he’d been in pain or squeaking I would have taken him to the vets.
“When the RSPCA came to take my rats I cried all day and night.”
Referring to the rat with the lump he said: “I can communicate with them and she told me that she didn’t like being left in a cage and she didn’t want to go to the vets. I told the RSPCA inspector who came to take them away. He felt it and said I could keep her and that there was nothing wrong with her.”
Talking about the rat with half a tail Cheeseborough said: “I had so many rats. One had a bad tail. I don’t know what happened. I saw that it was sore so I kept it clean and treated it myself. He seemed quite happy. I didn’t think there was anything that a vet could do for it.”
The case was adjourned until June 18 for sentencing.

I would just like to make readers aware, that I search for stories on the internet; regards animal abuse etc. I copy stories etc. from the internet; assuming these stories are correct at time of publishing. Having said that, sometimes the press get it wrong! So I just want to add that at the time of me posting a news story, I presume all the facts seem present & correct.

Face Book – Please Take Notice
For anyone wishing to connect to me via my Facebook page...PLEASE NOTE, ONLY PEOPLE I ADD AS ANIMAL ADVOCATES CAN SEE MY WHOLE PAGE...I do this out of respect for those friends I have who do not wish to see graphic images, videos or links of animal abuse!
As 99% of my page is animal related; anyone not in the above group of friends; will only see a limited amount of posts!!
DUE TO ANIMAL HATERS...I WILL ONLY ADD PEOPLE WHO CAN PROVE WHO THEY ARE via Facebook, Wordpress, Twitter etc. & WHO HAVE A GENUINE INTEREST IN ANIMAL WELFARE... i.e. if your Facebook page has absolutely nothing to do with animals, I see no point in joining my page. My Facebook is solely for animal welfare, I am not interested in playing games etc. I don't mean to sound rude but I am not interested in the amount of friends I have, its the quality of those friends that count.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND REQUESTS FOR YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN. I do not want anyone to be upset by graphic images etc.
My aim is to educate & raise awareness to the horrors animals face, at the hands of humans, every day, around the world!!
We can not hope to achieve better laws, to protect animals, unless we unite as one, to speak up for those who are voiceless!!
