“This is a sadistic, disgusting & shameful way, in which the Canadian hatchery’s treat baby chicks. Employees laugh & find it hilarious when chicks get stuck; or are thrown to a basket but miss & end up being injured. Seriously these workers have no morals or empathy for these new-born chicks; they are literally heartless. God help any animals they have at home, if they think it’s funny to watch these gentle innocent little chicks be ground up alive! As sentient beings, chicks are more than capable of feeling pain & distress etc. this practice needs to end: PERIOD. So please sign the petition. All animals who’s lives end for human consumption; should be treated with respect & kindness; from their first breath to their last!”

A new Mercy For Animals Canada undercover investigation at a Maple Leaf-owned hatchery in Ontario reveals chicks thrown by their fragile wings, drowned in scalding water, and ground up alive.

MAPLE LEAF MISERY

Thrown, Drowned & Ground Up Alive: Canadian Hatchery Exposed

From February to March of 2014, a Mercy For Animals Canada undercover investigator worked at Horizon Poultry — a Maple Leaf-owned hatchery in Hanover, Ontario. Our hidden camera captured horrific animal cruelty and neglect, including:

EXPERT OPINIONS

After reviewing the undercover footage, Dr. Sara Shields, a leading expert in chicken welfare, stated: “[I]n a commercial hatchery, there is very little consideration for the behavioral biology of the animals, the pain, stress and fear they may experience as they are conveyed through the equipment, and little regard for the occasional animal who is mauled by the machinery. Much better safeguards are needed to ensure that every chick is treated humanely.”

Veterinarian Dr. Mary Richardson agreed, concluding: “Because there are huge numbers of birds being processed and speed is important, birds are given no more care than if they were widgets. The workers fling, throw and drop the birds without any regard for their welfare.”

NATURE

Newly hatched chicks have well-developed nervous systems and are sensitive and fragile. In nature, chicks are protected by their devoted mothers who have been known to put their own lives at risk for their babies.

HATCHERIES

In hatcheries, each worker is expected to process over 1,700 chicks an hour by callously grabbing and throwing them. The animals are treated as inanimate objects rather than the sensitive and intelligent animals they are.

NATURE

In nature, a mother hen peeps to her chicks while they are still in the eggs, and the chicks peep back to her. When hatched, chicks stay close to their mother and find warmth, comfort, and protection under her wings.

HATCHERIES

In hatcheries, mother hens are replaced with massive machines, fast-moving conveyor belts, harsh handling  and frightening noises. Young chicks are sorted, discarded, and treated as mere cogs in a machine.

HELP END CRUELTY TO CHICKS

In nature, newly hatched chicks find warmth and comfort under their mother’s wing. In hatcheries, their mothers are replaced with massive machines, fast-moving conveyor belts, harsh handling, and frightening noises. Young chicks are sorted, discarded, and treated like mere cogs in a machine.

Although cruelty and violence are standard practice for Canada’s hatcheries, caring consumers can help end the needless suffering of chicks and other farmed animals by choosing a compassionate vegan diet.

CRUELTY CRITICS

“Workers are clearly desensitized to the animals’ suffering, joking and laughing about playing ‘football’ with chicks who have fallen from the machines, animals being boiled alive or mangled in the macerator.”

John Sorenson, PhD

In  a commercial hatchery, there is very little consideration for the behavioral biology of the animals, the pain, stress and fear they may experience as they are conveyed through the equipment, and little regard for the occasional animal who is mauled by the machinery.”

WHAT THE INVESTIGATION EXPOSED:

  • Chicks flung by their fragile wings and slammed into metal dividers
  • Live chicks sent through a scalding washing machine, burned, and drowned
  • Chicks overloaded and roughly crammed into macerators to be ground up alive

Get inspired! See how Mercy For Animals is winning the fight on behalf of farmed animals. From groundbreaking undercover investigations that expose shocking animal cruelty to historic legal victories, MFA is pushing the ball forward on society’s treatment of farmed animals.

Dear Julie,

Imagine a future without factory farming.

A future in which all animals are treated with respect and dignity.

It’s possible, if we join forces.

As 2013 winds to a close, I’m excited to share with you Mercy For Animals’ inspiring, brand-new “Year in Review” videohighlighting our many successes and victories.

Click here to watch the video now.

During the past 12 months, we have gone head-to-head with the largest corporations and meat producers in the world, pressing for change and speaking up on behalf of animals.

By releasing eye-opening undercover investigations, securing criminal convictions of animal abusers, pressuring corporations to adopt farmed animal welfare policies, and encouraging millions of Americans to transition to a vegan diet, we’ve moved the ball forward for farmed animals. We have achieved real, meaningful change.

It’s only because of supporters like you that MFA was able to advocate so effectively on behalf of farmed animals in 2013—exposing cruelty and inspiring compassion.

The numbers speak for themselvesIn the past year, Mercy For Animals reached over 20 million people through our online programs, informed 15 million people through news stories, and distributed over 1 million pieces of pro-vegan literature at 600 outreach events in over 190 cities.

But these numbers only tell part of the story. Our work has inspired countless people to move toward a vegan diet, sparing millions of animals the horrors of factory farming. And our undercover investigation and corporate outreach work has led to policy changes that will impact millions more animals each year.

Just look at all we’ve accomplished in this one year alone:

  • MFA’s groundbreaking undercover investigations shone a bright spotlight on the animal suffering behind the pork, egg, dairy and foie gras industries.
  • Our legal advocacy department pushed for improved legal protections, triumphantly fought ag-gag bills, and ensured that existing animal cruelty laws were enforced.
  • Our corporate outreach efforts successfully pressured some of the world’s largest corporations to adopt historic farmed animal welfare policies.
  • MFA’s advertising campaigns, grassroots advocacy, and public demonstrations educated consumers nationwide about animal abuse on factory farms and the many benefits of a compassionate vegan diet.

MFA gives a crucial voice to hens crammed into tiny, barren cages, unable to spread their wings; for pregnant pigs immobilized in crates so small they cannot even turn around; and for cows viciously beaten and mutilated without painkillers.

With you on our side, Mercy For Animals is effectively bringing this cruelty to light and serving as a powerful advocate for these innocent animals.

Please watch our new “Year in Review” video highlighting our many successes and victories from 2013. We hope our shared victories, made possible by your support, inspire you to make a commitment to help the billions of farmed animals who still desperately need our aid. Please consider making a special, year-end donation to support Mercy For Animals’ vital work—so we can secure even more victories for animals in 2014.

This holiday season, give the gift of hope to abused and neglected farmed animals by making a special tax-deductible donation to Mercy For Animals.

Thanks to a kindhearted MFA supporter, all donations made by midnight on December 31 will be matched – dollar for dollar – to a total of $100,000.

With this special opportunity, your gift will go twice as far in helping us build a kinder, more compassionate world.

“I posted this, way back in February, but have just noticed the video’s were removed??…so here it is again!”

“I’m certainly not trying to convert everyone to become vegetarian…but I do think people should watch this video… as difficult as it is to watch in parts…it is very informative. After viewing it, people are entitled to their own opinions regards the subject matter! I am not telling people what they should or should not eat, it’s a personal preference…I’m merely pointing out the journey, animals take, from field to plate! I will just point out that some things have changed regards animal welfare, since this video was made!”

” I chose to become vegetarian, several years ago, after watching something similar to this…I can’t call myself vegan because I just love egg butties from my friend’s pet chucks! Like I said, were all entitled to eat what we want…my daughter lives with me as my carer, she eats meat (particularly McDonald’s) I may not like it, but I don’t take offence at it & make her eat it in another room! When she does cook, she just substitutes the meat for Quorn, it makes a lovely spaghetti bolognese, which even she a meat eater, enjoy’s!

EARTHLINGS is an award-winning documentary film about the suffering of animals for food, fashion, pets, entertainment and medical research. Considered the most persuasive documentary ever made, EARTHLINGS is nicknamed the Vegan maker for its sensitive footage shot at animal shelters, pet stores, puppy mills, factory farms, slaughterhouses, the leather and fur trades, sporting events, circuses and research labs. The film is narrated by Academy Award® nominee Joaquin Phoenix and features music by platinum-selling recording artist Moby.

Initially ignored by distributors, today EARTHLINGS is considered the definitive animal rights film by organizations around the world. “Of all the films I have ever made, this is the one that gets people talking the most,” said Phoenix. “For every one person who sees EARTHLINGS, they will tell three.”

In 1999, writer/producer/director Shaun Monson began work on a series of PSAs about spaying and neutering pets. The footage he shot at animal shelters around Los Angeles affected him so profoundly that the project soon evolved into EARTHLINGS. The film would take another six years to complete because of the difficulty in obtaining footage within these profitable industries. Though the film was initially ignored by distributors, who told Monson that the film would “never see the light of day and should be swept under the rug,” today EARTHLINGS is considered the definitive animal rights film by organizations around the world.

Nation Earth was established to produce documentary films on socially urgent issues. EARTHLINGS, released in 2005, was the company’s first feature film and is the first of a documentary trilogy. The company is currently at work on the second installment, UNITY, which will explore the unifying force of consciousness found in nature, animals and humankind. UNITY is scheduled to be completed in 2010. For more information please see http://www.unitythemovement.com.

There are many farm animals, who endure their whole lives in stinking , horrific conditions, from birth to slaughter!  Don’t get me wrong, some owners treat their animals as if they were pets, but this is mainly on the smaller family run farms, where the owner probably has names for each pig or cow!!”

“However, it seems that small holdings are being driven out, as the big guns come in, wanting to build bigger factory farms, that can handle thousands of  animals a day!  They don’t care much about the well-being of the animals or the environment…just the profits they can make from them!

As if that is not bad enough… there will always be farm workers who see fit to direct their anger at these sentient beings…there going to die anyway; so who cares if one is targeted & beaten? Well actually we all should, just because they are raised for human consumption, does not give anyone the right to abuse or harm them, in any way! I think all animal factories & slaughter houses, should have CCTV…where inspectors can call unannounced to view the tapes…If all areas are covered properly by cameras, hopefully it might stop a lot of abuse towards the animals, from the bullies…there is always one who thinks it’s funny to stub a cigarette out on a pigs face & roughly handle the babies…anyone who harms a defenceless animal is just a pathetic coward!!

Animal Equality documents Spainish pig farms

A look at the pig farms in Spain – Birth to Slaughter –  Evidence of abuse & cruelty

This case once again highlight the horror that animals have usually exploited by the meat industry, a situation that has been extensively documented Animal Equality for two years investigating 172 farms of ten Spanish regions and the result can be seen on the website GranjasDeCerdos. org

The majority of Spanish society believes that it is wrong to harm animals when it can be avoided and animals in general, not just dogs and cats with whom we live, deserve to be considered and respected. Entities recognized internationally as theAcademy of Nutrition and Dietetics U.S. and their counterparts from Canada andNew Zealand endorse a vegan diet without animal products, which provides all necessary nutrients, a position that is shared by the Government of Catalonia andAndalusia in Spain.

From Animal Equality encourage citizens to opt for a vegan diet without animal products, with which we can still enjoy our meals without contributing to the exploitation and violence against animals. Millions of people around the world have already taken this step, thus helping to end the violence that constantly suffering of animals used for food, as all research shows that we have been doing for years and the video of this investigation .

The following video is over 40 mins long showing a pigs journey from birth to death. It is extremely graphic so please viewer discretion is advised.

It will open your eyes though – It was a similar video that made me vegetarian!
