Ohio Shelter Turns Off The Gas

“What great news, the previous post relating to this issue was a post I did beginning of the month, but due to hospital didn’t get posted so I am playing catch up…thank goodness I checked out the previous post link, or else I wouldn’t have known they decided to ditch the gas chamber…so this truly is great news!”

Animal advocates and dog lovers packed the meeting hall in Fairfield County, Ohio Tuesday morning, to see if there would be a decision reached regarding gassing at the Fairfield County Dog Shelter.

The Commissioners voted unanimously to discontinue using the gas chamber, effective immediately.

The decision was considered a victory for advocates who have been trying to stop the gassing at the shelter for years. County Commissioner Mike Kiger said that the cost comparison he received detailing euthanasia by injection versus gassing was the deciding factor for him.

Although Kiger credited vet-tech Laurie Schmelzer Kays with providing him with the data, Janice Kobi, President/Founder at Fairfield County C.A.R.E.S. said that Kiger had been provided that information long ago. It is widely believed that the public outcry generated by news reports over the weekend were instrumental in forcing Tuesday’s decision.

The shelter is attempting to find a vet to deliver EBI while employees are trained in the procedure. The HSUS has offered to cover the cost of training for lethal injection and willing to pay for setup, but now they are coming under fire for offering to help kill any of the shelter’s animals by any means. While all would prefer a no-kill solution – the step to a more humane method of euthanasia should not be denounced in the interim.

Kobi would like the shelter to be restructured as a model no-kill, which would probably require a complete turnover of shelter officials. Advocates are taking the battle one step at a time.

Today, the Vice President of the rescue that pulled the twelve dogs the day after the mass gassing on July 12th submitted a call for termination of two shelter officials, Sandy Moyer and Nina West.

On July 12, 2012, 13 dogs were unnecessarily gassed to death while these dogs had rescue,” she wrote. “These 13 healthy animals were placed in a gas chamber by two employees; Deputy AC officer, Sandy Moyer and a secretary Nina West. The Dog Warden, Mike Miller was on a camping vacation at the time of this gassing and therefore, do not hold him accountable for the actions of these two rogue workers. With 54 active kennels at this shelter, there was no reason for this, as I had contacted them and said I would rescue these dogs.”

The letter was addressed to the three County Commissioners and asks for the employees’ immediate removal, however for the moment, animal advocates are taking solace in the fact that gassing is now a thing of the past in Fairfield County.

Victory! UNIQLO Pledges to Phase Out Buying Wool From Mulesed Sheep!

Comments Off on Victory! UNIQLO Pledges to Phase Out Buying Wool From Mulesed Sheep!

After an eight-month international campaign by PETA and our affiliates, UNIQLO – part of Fast Retailing, the fifth-largest retailer in the world – has agreed to phase out the use of wool from sheep who have been mulesed.

Mulesing is a barbaric practice that involves cutting large chunks of skin and flesh from the rear ends of merino sheep, often without any pain relief. Mainly practiced in Australia, mulesing is a crude attempt to prevent flystrike, which can be controlled by using humane options.

UNIQLO now joins other top international retailers, such as Muji, C&A, Topshop, and H&M, that have pledged to take action against mulesing.

In pledging to phase out the use of wool from farms that continue to mutilate their sheep, UNIQLO has shown the world and, most importantly, Australian wool producers that it believes cruelty to animals is never fashionable.

This is a major victory for which PETA would like to thank activists around the world who have united against cruelty to sheep. Thanks to you, we are one step closer to ending mulesing once and for all.

It’s only thanks to our kind supporters that important progress like this can be made. Please help us win more lifesaving victories for animals by making a special donation to PETA today.

People power saves QLD turtles and dugongs

“Personal thanks to anyone who signed the petitions & took action from this blog…your’e GREAT”

Animals Australia supporters and caring people across Australia have won a landmark victory for turtles and dugongs in Far North Queensland. They will now be fully protected under the Animal Care and Protection Act thanks to you — and spared from brutal hunting methods.

In March this year, campaigning by Animals Australia and animal advocates, Colin Riddell, Bob Irwin and Rupert Imhoff led to two hard-hitting reports on ABC’s 7.30, exposing terrible cruelty to turtles and dugongs in ‘traditional’ hunts in far north Queensland. Footage revealed turtles slowly butchered while still alive and dugongsdragged behind speed boats until they drowned.

Over several years, thousands of outraged Animals Australia supporters and concerned individuals have written to the QLD Government calling on them to act. Under this public pressure, the new QLD LNP Government pledged to remove animal cruelty exemptions that had left these animals vulnerable, within its first 100 days in office.

This week it honoured that promise, with Agriculture Minister John McVeigh introducing legislation to state parliament to ensure dugongs and turtles are protected by the same cruelty laws that protect other animals. Local Indigenous elders have also shown their support for the decision.

Sea turtles and dugongs subjected to cruel hunting methods, along with other animals that are traditionally hunted such as kangaroos and goannas, all feel pain, fear and distress — regardless of who the perpetrator is. Cultures the world over are now acknowledging that tradition is no excuse for cruelty. This legislation will help to spare turtles and dugongs the worst of their suffering.

If you were one of the thousands of people who took action to protect turtles and dugongs then we sincerely thank you for helping make this important victory possible. Please take a moment to also thank the QLD Government for this significant decision.

VICTORY

PCRM recently filed a complaint against the Mecosta County Animal Shelter in Big Rapids, Mich., to stop the shelter from selling dogs to laboratories, and local activists have worked hard to end the practice.

In response, the county controller announced that the shelter plans to stop providing dogs for experiments. That’s a huge step toward stopping dogs from being sent to Wayne State University, where they endure heart-failure experiments before being killed.
