A National Geographic Video: Explaining The Wild-Blood Ivory Trade

Comments Off on A National Geographic Video: Explaining The Wild-Blood Ivory Trade

“This is a follow on, from the previous post. I wanted to show the full extent of the ivory problem, to as many people as possible. I want people to fully understand the problems, faced by elephants, due to the high supply & demand of ivory. Then hopefully, after viewing the video, one might want to go back to the previous post & carry out the instructions or click the link at the bottom of this post, that will take you to the page. It’s only 3 steps. 1 send an email letter (the template & email addresses are included) 2. sign 2 petitions (links are there) 3. to simply share it with everyone you know; we all need to do our bit, to help save the elephants.”

“The National Geographic film is 45 minutes long…but well worth 45 minutes of anybody’s time. I have watched many videos on the subject, but believe this one  gives a very real & disturbing insight into all areas of the ivory trade. From the poachers to customs & excise, even the Chinese government! This racket is definitely very shady; undercover agents were told things that really puts this expensive trade; into perspective!”

“As previously stated in the prior post, the sixteenth Conference of the Parties (CoP16) in March 2013 is so important in stopping the ivory trade. The scientific community, global intelligence agencies and wildlife trafficking authorities warn that the African Elephant is on the precipice of extermination due to the unmitigated slaughter of tens of thousands of elephants each year.”

” One interesting fact pointed out in the film, is that some Chinese people, believe ivory comes from the elephants teeth, which they presume just grows back! Therefore, education is a big factor here, the Chinese government need to get their ass into gear & make the Chinese aware of what ivory really is & the despicable, heinous way, in which it is taken from the elephant, often leaving many baby elephants to die also!”

“One big problem, is something used by many Chinese people…ivory chopsticks! Now I know that their not all made of ivory, but do up market restaurants use them; if so  imagine how many chopsticks China gets through in week? How many elephants are killed just to support the demand for chopsticks??

Taming The Tigers: Tiger Temple Or Just Tourist Tigers?

Comments Off on Taming The Tigers: Tiger Temple Or Just Tourist Tigers?

In 1994 a Buddhist Temple was founded in Thailand. It would become one of the most well-known tourist attractions, where the public could interact with Tigers. But it hid a terrible secret; it would also come to be known as one of the most infamous tiger breeding, trading and abusive facilities in the world!

Sybelle Foxcroft was the undercover investigator who exposed this. After the Thai Government and no conservation agency moved on this violent place, Sybelle continued to go into the temple and investigate herself with her conservation organisation, Cee4life (Conservation and Environmental Education 4 Life).

Link:https://www.facebook.com/BehindtheCloakBuddha

In 2011, she released the book ‘Behind the Cloak of Buddha’ which chronicles the lives of these tigers. They will never have lived their lives in vain.

On October 2012, Sybelle went back with David O’shea…here is the outcome….

Here is the YouTube video for the Dateline program. I went back to the Tiger Temple with Dateline journalist David O’Shea to check on the Tigers welfare, to see any changes, and to provide education for the public to travel ethically. Please share this with everyone you know.

Until people are educated about this place and others like it, animals will continue to be abused, animals will suffer, and animals will disappear, all because people think its cool to “pat” these wild creatures. Save your money and support the last 3000 tigers left in world in the wild, and help us protect the ones in captivity from illegal wildlife trade and exploitation ~ Sybelle

Taming the Tigers

Thailand’s Tiger Temple attracts thousands of tourists, but activists claim there’s a history of ill treatment and illegal trafficking of animals.

Temple Tigers attacks Tourist – The Tiger is known to have a most powerful bite force of 1000 pounds/453kg when adults. A Tiger can kill at human when they are 6+ months old. On 15th October 2012, a female tourist walked into the temple and within 10 minutes she was rushed to hospital after a young tiger attacked and bit her. She has 9 stitches and is ok. Imagine if that was your head, your child’s torso..

The only reason I know is because I was there. Tourists sign and indemnity form when entering the temple, releasing them of any accountability  I am compiling a list of injuries, attacks, and bites on tourists in the tiger temple over the years. I’m doing this for 2 reasons, for safety of humans, and to support the captives Tigers of the temples right to live in ethical and humane situations, away from people pulling their heads around and sitting on them etc.

They ARE survival specialist carnivores. If you or any only you know has been bitten, please send detailed information to sybelle@cee4life.org or donna@cee4life.org There is no magical care that can make tigers placid, Tigers have and will continue to attack human beings that put themselves in such dubious close proximity. Please respect your life, your loved ones, and respect these tigers. Learn to look but not touch. – Sybelle

The Drugging of the Temple Tigers – For those of you who haven’t read the book “Behind the Cloak of Buddha” I would like to clear up the “drugging of the tigers”. This so-called drugging was mentioned by one girl who never provided any proof back in 2006. There was no proof then and there is no proof now. However this girl said the Tigers were drugged to the conservation organisation who conducted the investigation and so the “story” began.

I became the undercover investigator in 2007 in the Temple and I can guarantee you that I watched from 5am -11pm and not once did I catch them giving any classic drugs (injections, pills) to the Tigers. However, I did repeatedly observe Tigers displaying classic signs and symptoms of sedation eg: unsteady, eye dialated, tongue hanging out, increased thirst, etc however still no evidence of drugging.

There are herbal concoctions that cause sedative effects which could easily have been put in their food, however again I never caught them doing that either. One afternoon I followed Hernfa back to his cage, there was something wrong with him. He was staggering, incredibly off balance, and he could barely make it to his cage. He fell onto the floor. I called his name and he struggled to lift his head, his eyes could barely focus on me. This is one of the photos of him in this state. (there are a series of them).

Hernfa drugged or exhausted?

Picture taken by  Sybelle- Drugged or not? This is Hernfa one of the photos of him in this state. (there are a series of them). Was he just extremely exhausted?

Was he just extremely exhausted? He would be from 500 people. But I set about trying to find the reason for the extreme lethargy that all the Tigers displayed and I was able to determine this. These Tigers are locked in cells 20 hrs per day, no sunshine, no exercise, no enrichment. They are then pulled out for the tourists for 4 hours where they are yanked up and down for photos. Additionally, not one of these Tigers has a correct diet.

All have NEVER had red meat or blood or bones as a carnivore should, they are lacking in multiply vitamins and minerals etc, they are in a weakened state already. Then, many had been beaten from birth and the continued abuse of punches in the head and urine sprayed in the face has been caught on camera by many tourists. None of the Tigers have any real muscle tone at all and many have lost a good amount of their eyesight because of the lack of taurine in their diet. (Taurine is found in a normal carnivore meat diet and causes eye problems when there is a lack of it. In these Tigers cases, it is non existent).

So you have, unhealthy, weak, defeated, abused, unenriched, lacking exercise who cant see properly Tigers being dragged around day after day for their life. And then one day in the Tigers food preparation area I found the leaf of the Kratom tree, a category 5 narcotic, illegal but a native tree to Thailand…… Was this what caused this effect on the Tigers? Or was it purely the abuse in every way of the Tigers…. There will only be one way to find out, thorough drug testing outside of Thailand. Sybelle

Comments Off on Face book; OSCAP Rhino Need Our Help – Petitions To Sign

“Please, sign the petitions below for & on behalf of OSCAP & my animal warrior sister; Louise Du Toit! “

OSCAP is a facebook group that supports Rhino Rescue Project in an attempt to quell the scourge of poaching in South Africa. Rhino Rescue Project offers a holistic horn treatment that will help save our Rhino from poaching. We believe that this is one of the tools that can be used to curb poaching.

Our aim is to put a stop Rhino Hunting in South Africa, maintain a Moratorium on Rhino Trade both locally and internationally and to keep people informed on the crisis that the Rhino are in. Rhino horn is not medicine and cannot be traded as such. Stockpiles should be burnt and our Rhino’s must be protected at all costs from becoming yet another animal to be added to the extinction list.

PETITION 1

http://petition.avaaz.org/en/petition/REINSTATE_CRIMINAL_CHARGES_AGAINST_MR_MARNUS_STEYL/?cIHaHdb

The South African rhino horn syndicate case involving game farmer Marnus Steyl, professional hunter Harry Claassens, and Thai nationals Chumlong Lemtongthai, Punpitak Chunchom, and Tool Sriton came to a close on Friday 9th November 2012 with charges being withdrawn against Mr Marnus Steyl and a guilty plea was entered by Chumlong Lemgtonthai. We believe that despite the 40 year sentence that Mr Lemtongthai received that justice has not been served by the withdrawal of charges against Mr Steyl.

26 Rhinos were killed for the purpose of getting the horns onto the illegal rhino horn market in Asia.

Below is a link to disturbing video footage of just of 1 of the 26 Rhino that were killed in a so-called “legal” rhino trophy hunt, carried out at the behest of an international wildlife trafficking syndicate:

 PETITION 2

http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/CALLING_FOR_THE_IMMEDIATE_REMOVAL_OF_MS_MOTLALEPULA_ROSHO/?ckqfUcb

The MEC of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism of the North West Province, Ms. Motlalepula Rosho by her inaction and refusal to accept compelling evidence and argument laid before her in the Legislature of the North West Province with regard to corruption and criminality in her department, MUST be removed forthwith.

She treats her mandate and duty with contempt and entertains International Criminals in “her” Province by handing out Hunting Permits willy nilly. She does not understand her obligations in terms of Section 24 of our Constitution and by this brings shame on our Country.

 PETITION 3

http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/SAY_NO_TO_LEGALIZING_TRADE_IN_RHINO_HORN/?fSrXhdb&pv=0

The pro-trade lobby has tried to justify rhino horn trade in economic terms. These justifications are based on flawed & dangerous assumptions and often proposed by those with a vested financial interest in trade.

Legalizing trade will prevent poachingOn the contrary, legalizing trade has the potential to increase poaching to unsustainable levels by increasing demand and potentially even raising prices which will see a decline in rhinoceros populations. At face value, legalizing trade could bring much needed funding to South African National Parks and reserves. Notwithstanding the real risks and unintended consequences it would be morally reprehensible, highly irregular and irresponsible to promote trade at any time into the foreseeable future before other more sustainable sources of revenue are thoroughly investigated.

Bodies of 14 rare Sumatran tigers seized in Indonesia

Comments Off on Bodies of 14 rare Sumatran tigers seized in Indonesia

JAKARTA — Indonesian police seized 14 preserved bodies of critically-endangered Sumatran tigers in a raid on a house near Jakarta, a spokesman said Thursday.

Sumatran tiger

A man identified as F.R. was arrested Tuesday in a suburban area of Depok suspected of his involvement in the illegal wildlife trade, national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told Agence France-Presse.

“We confiscated whole preserved bodies of 14 tigers, a lion, three leopards, a clouded leopard, three bears and a tapir and a tiger head,” he said, adding that investigations were ongoing.

We believe he is connected to a network of rare animal traders. But we have not established yet if the animals are for the domestic or international market,” he said.

The suspect could face up to five years’ jail and fines of 100 million rupiah ($11,000) for violating natural resources conservation laws.

Poachers often sell tiger body parts to the lucrative traditional Chinese medicine market.

There are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. Several die each year as a result of traps, poaching or other human actions.

Too cute to live? Save the slow lorises

Comments Off on Too cute to live? Save the slow lorises

The little monkey with the big eyes is snatched from its mother. When they are young, they are even cuter and fetch a good price on the black market. The mum is killed by the poachers. She is of no use to them.

Illegal wildlife trade with slow lorises is flourishing. In their homeland Indonesia they are sold at roadsides or markets. Here, a slow loris costs about 25 dollars, via the internet they fetch a price of up to 2,500 dollars.

Due to their cute appearance more and more people like the idea of having a slow loris as a pet. The hype was stirred up by videos circulating in the internet. But this way they are loved to death.

Teeth pulled out brutally, many die

Despite their huge brown eyes and soft fur, slow lorises are in no way suitable as playmates. These small primates possess a rare trait among mammals: a toxic bite. On the inside of their arm a special gland produces a poison that protects them from predators. In the event of danger, they coat their teeth with this poison.

To make believe that they are suitable as pets, merchants use pliers to pinch off or pull out the slow lorises’ teeth. This can lead to harmful infections. Many slow lorises die before they are even sold.

Awareness is very important, especially in Indonesia. Please help to protect the lorises and write to the Indonesian authorities. Demand that they stop the illegal trade with slow lorises immediately!
